I feel that mixing argument even though I’ve never been involved in it myself. I don’t like how compressed recordings often are. Just a drone, very congested. Drums need some room to punch through. Not much of an issue if you have a quick attack so you just punctuate the mix without interfering much in between notes. But those spikes need headroom which a ‘hot’ mix precludes. It doesn’t help that Tool is basically a fight in the lower register, despite not having that many parts. I’m thinking about the older records. You can definitely hear a change with _Ænima._ Before then they had more bombast with a strange trebly edge. More aggressive musical style, too. I wonder if that was mastered with pre-emphasis and now released in that form without the playback adjustment. _Lateralus_ was apparently initially HDCD despite dynamics using a tiny fraction of a CD’s range. _10,000 Days_ went crazy with regular clipping. _Fear Inoculum_ has come down a bit again.
When the shot pulls back it is amazing how much bigger Danny is than Rick. Good thing there is not a fight scene. The interview was fantastic, no surprise given Rick's acumen as a conversationalist and interviewer.
When I worked in bands we would group 3 songs together, like cars, girls, jobs or 3 songs from ZZTop or Loverboy or Tubes. We would play the 3 and then talk about the bar, tip the waitress (and when your done tipping return them to the upright position), try the Veal(hehe). And in order to break the 'same songs same order' we would mix the group of 3's, and of course, requests had to be writing (ledgible) on the back of a $100 bill ;-)
I'm surprised Wings For Marie isn't a highlighted song on your channel. Lyrically it's brilliant. You can hear Maynards frustration with his mother's dedication to her Baptist faith and his frustration with God. A beautifully written ode to his mother Judith Marie.

Danny seems like such a chill and happy guy
He is so kind about what Maynard would be comfortable singing after all these years.
Love the KC shirt.
Great interview ❤❤
been listening to Tool for 24 years and I think this is my first time seeing Danny Carey. Even saw them live before.
I saw them at the beginning of the year. Danny was THE show. Amazing.
Tool isnt my favorite band but they are definitely my favorite live band.
Love Danny. I’m going to the BEAT show tonight in Houston. Cool 😎
Saw them at The Gorge in George washington in 06. It was a great show and and awesome venue.
Just went there for the first time - I would pay to see just about anything there
@ 5:38 - What kind of car is that? A Pano arrow van????
He said Panemera. It’s a Porsche.
@@nonono531 that makes sense. I just couldn't quite make out what he said.
8:05 those ATC Pro mk2 monitors cost $16,199 AUD each
Danny stands at the top of the mountain. Also a stand up guy. Very humble.
Subscribed! Love your channel Rick! Danny is a legend!
He just pronounced it…. IN-ema.
We finally have clarification.
Danny Carey is sick to watch live! He's a blur back there killing it. That's who I watched when I saw them in Louisville
I'm surprised Wings For Marie isn't a highlighted song on your channel. Lyrically it's brilliant. You can hear Maynards frustration with his mother's dedication to her Baptist faith and his frustration with God. A beautifully written ode to his mother Judith Marie.
You need to interview this guy like 20 times.
Such a calm demeanor, hard to believe he is a beast of a drummer.
His playing on Pneuma, is utterly brilliant. As stunning as anything from any prog rock band in modern history.
Such a beautiful soul, like a kid trapped in a giant body. Super talented and so humble.
I've always been a Rush fan and saw them 4 times. Peart was amazing. But I think Danny Carey is the GOAT, def. (so far)
Subscribed! Great channel and interviews.
The king crimson beat shirt is so cool
Tool has a sound all their own very few can create that or have the skill. They had more influence on music then many bands will ever admit.
I haven’t looked yet, but just had the urge to find interviews with Bob Ludwig…. Any chance of getting him on the channel if he hasn’t already been through?
love Danny, so real and down to earth.
Whatever their process, I just hope they keep it going. I friggin love Tool!
A master of his craft and someone that genuinely loves his art.
The sound of Tool, especially Fear Inoculum, is like the sound coming from the future. There's no other band that can pull that off!
I am not a huge Beato fan, but you must hand it to him; he knows how to conduct a great interview. These are really fantastic questions, and he really gives Carey the time to extrapolate.
Can i ask why your not a fan? I only ask because he doesnt seem like a polarizing guy to me.
@@jacobhayes1305agreed. I’m curious if this also.
@@jacobhayes1305 Hes got some pretty obtuse opinions about some genres (rap ect) and has been very matter of fact about thing that are more personal opinion.
Say that as a fan though.
@@jacobhayes1305 he lacks integrity and comes off as disingenuous a lot of the time. Too financially motivated for my tastes too. Nothing wrong with making money, but he puts the cart before the horse when it comes to making music oriented content.
He’s an incredibly skilled interviewer with a great musical memory and really understands how to ask musicians about their artistic processes and meet them on that level, which makes it all the more annoying that like 75% of his channel is clickbait “REAL MUSICIANS FINALLY DYING OUT?” bullshit
So many memories at the Loft. That’s Rick James old API board:)
sic business keeper coming Ric!!
Rick looks TINY sitting next to Danny. Like a scene from LOTR with forced perspective. 😂❤🤘🏻
Just like that 1 in 200 photos a photographer makes into a masterpiece, TOOL does that with sound.
