“Will the next Tool album take more than 10,000 days?”
That was an ongoing (and agonizing) joke for Tool fans that awaited the band’s fifth album following the release of 2006’s 10,000 Days. (A cruel clairvoyance of a title.) For those counting, when Fear Inoculum was finally delivered on August 30, 2019, it was just 4,868 days from their previous album. All crummy jokes aside, the anticipation of the album was real for a reason: the music. And the rhythmic cog of their constant contorting of depth and darkness is bassist Justin Chancellor.
Sure, drummer Danny Carey is a living legend bashing everything his large frame can smash and crash. Adam Jones transforms his guitar into a Hans Zimmer production with varied textures, temperaments, and traits his tone expresses. During shows, singer and lyricist Maynard James Keenan prowls in the shadows adding to the band’s musical mysticism. This triumvirate core dished out the punishing EP Opiate in 1992, and their 1993 debut full-length Undertow was more complex and calculated in its rage. But in 1995, when Justin Chancellor replaced Paul D’Amour on bass, Tool immediately expanded their dimensionality. The original three continued to dazzle and dumbfound listeners, but the addition of Chancellor and his pocket-minded role unlocked a collective vocabulary previously unspoken. Simply put, if Tool was an octopus, Chancellor was the head. The others could be momentarily independent tentacles exploring the melodic murkiness of their respective reaches, but when they needed to propel forward, Chancellor was steering. His lines are the base for the band’s groove and attitude that became a focal point on subsequent releases with 1996’s Ænima, 2001’s Lateralus, 2006’s 10,000 Days, and eventually 2019’s Fear Inoculum. The former three went triple-platinum, while the latter three were No. 1 on the Billboard 200. (Ænima landed in the No. 2 spot.)
If you ever catch yourself playing air guitar to Tool, you’re probably mimicking Chancellor’s parts. “Schism,” “The Pot,” “Forty Six & 2,” “H.,” “Fear Inoculum,” “Descending,” “The Grudge,” and plenty of others feature his buoyant bass riffs.
Chancellor’s tone has had a longstanding relationship with Wal basses, Gallien-Krueger amps, and Mesa/Boogie cabs. The evolving part of his rig has been his pedalboard. At this juncture of the band’s run supporting Fear Inoculum, Chancellor’s board is larger than his guitar-playing counterparts. Yet everything has a place and purpose. Some of it is duplicity, some of it is to avoid any required knob-turning during the show, and as we find out in the Rundown, some of it is just for fun. Grab a seat and get comfortable as Chancellor and his tech Pete Lewis walk PG’s elated Chris Kies through his live setup.

not to be a jerk, but why link a 5 string here?
I hope that you guys was able to get Adam as well....and just saving it for another day.. and maybe Danny or his tech for the drum department
This is the vid I needed in my life.
Where was the intro to this video shot? Killer pinball machines!
So where's the link to the Wal then??? Surely Sweetwater is doing a promo on those too! 😝
I hope everyone enjoys the episode! I tried to do all the Tool/bass fans justice! And thanks for indulging my extended intro ... keep rocking!
Congrats on landing this one! Bur really, you've built a tremendous body of work with Rig Rundown and that brings with it these opportunities. Keep rollin!
Hell yes man! This is a big one. I met Justin once in their music clinic "tour" and found him to be such a lovely, kind person. I've also been a Tool fan for decades 🤘
You did great man!
Great job keeping your cool, dude!
The guys in Tool are really super nice and down to earth. I met Danny and Adam a bunch a long time ago and they were always kind and willing to talk shop. Looking forward to watching this one.
This better be the most watched Rundown of 2024.
This is the one every bassist has been waiting for.
Definitely going to be my most watched
Fleas rig rundown would also qualify:) Justin, Les, Robert T and Flea!
I'm gonna play it daily, I don't care
Wait until they get Adam it’s game over
You guys should include a
"Purchase Gear Responsibly" warning label on all of the rig rundowns cuz I'm about to lose my house.
😂😂
4 year wait and 10k cost on a Wal last I looked.
@@71calexThat’s about $208.33 a month for the 4 year wait just to cover the full 10k for it
one of the fastest 40 minute videos of my life.
Felt like 4 min!
No fuckin shit that was 40 min? nut uh!
I was sad when it was over I was like no way that’s 40 minutes
I noticed this comment 30 min in and I thought: no way, I just started, oh nvm
When he started playing Schism I couldn’t help but smile.
Same!
timestamp?
Every single one of his riffs is so iconic, I was smiling everytime he played one, but especially that autowah sound on the grudge.

This video deserves a Grammy, a Webby, and a Nobel Peace Prize.
What about a gibby
Micheal Scott telling us when the Tool rig run down finally happens
“Ok it’s happening, everyone stay calm! STAY FKN CALM!!!”
XD
And Jim just happy to finally know what a ‘run down’ is.
@@Scissorhandsx91he’s gonna fax that rundown….to his dad.
I used to pray for times like this
What do you do now, just keep your fingers crossed?
@@FunkyMonk6 Pretty sure he grinds like that to shine like this
@@ImStuckInStockton Pretty sure that’s not the first time you’ve used that line, but absolutely sure it should be the last.
@@FunkyMonk6 Pretty sure that in a matter of time I spent locked up in the back of a paddy wagon, cuffs locked on wrists
@@ImStuckInStockton yeah you seem the sort
I love what’s unspoken in this video. The way the tech looks at Justin when he’s talking and the mutual respect and listening between all three of you. Beautiful x
I love how he's straight faced most of the time, but when justin is playing and showcasing his pedals he starts smiling :)))
saw that too. the delight when your boss is a genius and legend and an allround humble good dude
I think it's sexual attraction
so cool. justin seems actually excited to do this. i always have the impressions musicians dont want to do these kind of videos and just send their guitar tech.
He actually seemed kind of nervous at first! Love Justin! ❤
You’d be surprised at how many artists have the attitude of “I just play it, I don’t care how it works” my dad is like this, he’s one of the best guitarists I’ve ever heard and has played for 60 years and doesn’t even like changing his own strings and thinks I’m crazy for changing pots or pickups. I thought it was cool seeing how involved and enthusiastic Justin was on the technical side
I agree.. To me, it's his bass riffs and tone is Tools' signature sound
Flawless. Justin is not just a bassist. He is a tone/sound scientist!
The mid show string changes. what a legend.
In my mind I'm like "does he know it's a bass?"
5 MINUTES NO LESS...FFS
I was hoping for a demonstration of the string change process. Bet it's like watching a marine breakdown and reassemble his rifle. 😂
I don't change my strings. Ever 😂
well earnie ball regulars (non-coated) and even the damn coated ones kinda suck in terms of durability (i just put em a few months back on my guitar to try them out). They darken up in like a few hours so of course he'll feel the need to change em mid show. They are sponsored so ofc they say they love em but if you guys really want sound longevity (of about 6 months) use elixir.
I am so glad he confirms the shift from 113 to 115 because I thought I was losing my mind.
right its supple. told my son about when we were listing one day. he couldn't hear it. to me it was loud as a bell
Finally, one of my bass heroes ❤❤, just waiting for the Adam Jones rig rundown
I’m sure we’ll be waiting for a while!!
@@Timothy0430maybe, i hope not 15 years, thanks DunlopTv 😂😂
Agreed..Love Adam and would love to see a deep dive into his rig
Will Never happen
He just doesn’t really enjoy talking about gear apparently. It would be more fun to have his guitar tech do it.
For all us bassists waiting so long….. YESSSSSS 🔥
No disrespect to the other hosts that sometimes do these rig rundowns but Chris is by far the best at it. He always asks informative questions and really knows his stuff
I like Chris and John Bolinger equally.
bolinger
everyone seems to focus on the others, but i think this guy is the secret to tools sound
@@thed3008 i imagine it wouldnt be tool then would it
Holy crap... This must be one of the most waited Rig Rundowns ever... Let's hope we can get Adam and Danny/Joe for the drums
I've been hoping for a Premier Guitar rig rundown with Adam for years. Dunlop did a very superficial one years back.
@martindammable an Adam one would be simple: "uh this is a gibson, idk what year or anything. And these are my diezel heads and mesa cabs. That's uh... that's pretty much it. *drop d riff*"
ua-cam.com/video/cZ7oqWdMvt8/v-deo.htmlsi=dTZ0orUzuG9We-83
Here’s a video of Danny Carey that was just recently put out.
Im here even in not a bassist... i really hope that make a ADAM JONES rig rundown too... please!
they asked him but he politely declined.
Adam goes out of his way to keep his rig an enigma wrapped up in a mystery.
@@SirOttisAdam was also the main reason Tool wasn’t on streaming services for so long. I’ve all but worshipped Tool for twenty years so it’s hard to say anything bad, but Adam has always come across as a quiet artist wizard who just wants to make your ears bleed and not anger any questions.
Never have I clicked on a video so fast in my life! Glad you got Justin to talk about his gear with help from Pete Lewis, what a great vid!
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@premierguitardo you think getting Adam on an episode would be possible? To get Justin and Adam rig rundowns would be so damn amazing!
@@jasoncarraway966 I think it's very unlikely because Adam is ultra secretive about his gear, though there was an old rig tour video with his tech Chris Leahy which explained his Silverburst Gibsons, Diezel & Marshal amps, and also the pedalboard including his talkbox for Jambi
That's rad Chris did the little intro to show his appreciation for the opportunity. Bollinger & Chris are like the PG bread & butter.
The critical element for the tone is his suspenders. Without those, no gyro hips, no bassy bass
I have been waiting for this video ever since I saw the grainy Dunlop TV rundown at 15 years old. All of my bass playing since has been inspired by Justin's massive sound and chordal phrasing
that Dunlop one is the Zapruder film of JC's bass
I built my bass tone around that video, but now watching this one I realized so much was left out!!!!
Was in the front row in front of this guy last Monday night. Vibrated my sinus cavities. What a blast watching him play!
I'm a guitarist and a huge Tool fan and I've been dying to watch this episode. I cannot wait for the Adam Jones rig rundown.
It will never happen. Sadly.
The only thing better than Justin and this interview is the look on Chris' face the whole time. Like a kid at Christmas! Absolutely priceless. So happy you guys could make this happen. Honestly, if I ever even made eye contact with anyone from Tool I would become a mute pile of fanboy goo. Good job!
His reaction to Justin handing him the Wal was priceless
His clean tone gives me chills every time
💯
I wish Peter Steele would have been around long enough for you to do a Rig Rundown on his gear. He's the only other bass player with such a unique sound that almost no one can replicate.
the GOAT for modern rock bass 🔥thank you PG
This is amazing! Thanks for sharing. As one of the first bassists on UA-cam to try to show Justin’s music to the world covering Tool on bass it’s wonderful to see how much more open he is later in his career to show the secrets of his sound. From Aenema to 10k days it was always a mystery and he remained pretty mysterious about his unique sound. I spent the better part of almost 15 years trying to dial in his sound and there were a few things that were hard to replicate. I love that he is now so open to sharing….this is an amazing video that answers a few questions I still had remaining. Thank you so much for sharing!!!🙏🏻
Bro you are a UA-cam legend for us Tool bass fanatics such as myself. Hope life is treating you well my friend. I was always very stoked to see new content from you cause like you said a lot of Justin’s sound was a total mystery until you started putting together videos.
Not only that but you are in your own right an amazing bass player as well! Your covers were extremely well done my friend.
Does your whammy still work? mine had a faulty charger and its been dead since. Good to see you're still rocking the bottom end Brad! Old timey greets from NL.
@@plukette my friend!!! Wow! So good to hear from you! Yes, my original bass whammy is still working and tracking well. I hope you are well!
You know the true hero here?? Chris. I cant imagine seeing tool live, let alone being in his shoes for this shoot. You served us fans so very well, and did us proud ❤️
Respect to Paul D'Amour, he rarely gets credit for creating the "TOOL" sound with his bass style.
I love how in all the Tool interviews I've seen, the guys are so cool and laid back. Shout out to Justin for doing this, and for having Pete there (and treating him as part of the team). Thank you for this... :)
Using the LS-2 to bypass multiple analog effects is smart.
I use the LS-2 pedal and its a game changer. Pedal does so much and is relatively cheap for a boss pedal that does so many things
Congradultions to Justin and TOOL for having the best in the business do their RigRundown...Chris "Always-Prepared" Kies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can't believe this episode is real. Thank you love it.
I’ve been waiting for this episode for years! Thank you Premier Guitar ❤
Chris Kies is such a good dude. It's awesome to see people showing their excitement and humility around their heroes. Chris please always stay this way, this is what keeps music passionate and magical.
Much like a Tool song, that 40 minutes felt like 5 minutes. I’ve spent years trying to get close to his tone and just studying him as a musician. Kick ass job, Chris. What an experience to be right there with the legend! I’ve wanted a video like this for YEARS! Huge thanks to everyone who said yes to making this a reality 🙌
You really gave this segment the time it deserves,Justin is a composer, such an affable guy too,u did awesome to contain your inner fanboy and props to his tech guy for coming along
Lets goo! Premier Guitar continues to deliver time and time again! Very excited for this one. Thanks for the great work you do!
Hell yeah, I was at this show. Absolutely epic, and this rig rundown is pretty much holy grail material. Props for making it happen
I wouldn't even be able to speak. He inspired me to play and millions others and now, probably more. Thanks a bunch, Premier!!!
To me, Justin is simply the best and most inspirational modern bassist, and the reason why I play bass...
Beyond his amazing talent, Justin always seems to be a simple and humble man enjoying what he does and easy to access, which is not that common at this level of the food pyramid.
How many rock stars would have rather sent their roadie (only) for this kind of interview ?
Justin not only is present but also puts his technician under the spotlights...
Means a lot from a human standpoint !
More than 30 years since I've been listening to Tool and on a nearly daily basis.
What a wonderful musical journey it's been so far.
Can't wait for their next release !
Thank you so much Justin for this and everything !!!!!
And thx a lot @chris_kies and Premier Guitar for this flawless "Rig rundown" !
The only issue for you now will be to make something better than this (forget about it, simply impossible) !!!
Cheers
Cédric (from France)
🤘😉
i've been waiting for this video for a long time. Thank you. I love Justin's tone
This is by far the most interesting episode in the series! What a fortune to get such a chat with the legendary Justin, amazing!
My life is complete. Wonderful video. Justin is such a lovely bloke. And that Wal just sounds glorious
Finally! Since I discovered those Rig Rundowns and since I saw that Dunlop video about Justin's rig I wanted to see a detailed rundown of his rig. Thanks to everyone for making it happen.
Thanks so much for posting this! Feels like I've been waiting a lifetime for this interview.
Thanks Chris for the intelligent questions, and thanks Justin and Pete for being so generous with your knowledge!
NEVER CLICKED ON A VIDEO SO FAST IN MY ENTIRE LIFE
Thanks for being diligent and bringing this to us! Tis a good day!
Hell yes! Great job Chris! Thank you for bringing this to the fans
I've been waiting for this for forever. They were so well prepared and open to do the thing. What a great rundown. Seeing them recently, not only is his playing but his tone is meticulous.
This was such a treat!! Justing seems like an awesome dude!! Would love more of the bass rig rundowns!🙏🙏
Bro props to your endurance on this! def liking this video just for the fact you got a rig rundown!!
I’ve been waiting for a video on these guy for so long, I’ve been a huge Tool fan ever since I first heard them in Guitar Hero: World Tour so this is absolutely awesome. My friends and I who play in a band with (we also covered Sober at our most recent show last year, a song we’ve been holding onto since we first wanted to do it at our second gig) went to go see them back in November and it was one of the best shows I’ve ever been to (we even got to meet a gentleman who was sitting next to us that had been following Tool since 1993, which was really cool), especially since they brought out Alex Lifeson from Rush to join them for Jambi (which was our singer’s favourite Tool song) and they went into the solo section from Passage to Bangkok and we were just blown away because neither of us were even expecting to see Lifeson and it was fucking awesome. This has definitely made its place as one of my favourite RRs, fucking awesome as always guys
this episode is gold, thank you so much!
It's so great to see this document, and also it's fantastic to see Chris reaction to everything Justin is saying. Incredible video. ¡Gracias!
not a lot of video's I hit like before I watch it. prologue already goosebumps and tears in my eyes.
It’s amazing to get this interview . Good effort from all involved .
Many of us need a tool rig rundown fix . It’s real education .
Thank you so so much for this amazing video. I hope you made another one with Adam Jones too.
Incredible. Congrats on getting this to happen!
holy moly, i dont know, for how long i was waiting for that. BIG BIG THANKS. Massive inspiration for me. Justin is a real bass wizard.
Best rig rundown so far by far. What an absolute pair of awesome blokes. Legend.
Awesome job Chris! A big thanks to you and Premier Guitar for making this happen. As a lifelong Tool fan and bass player, this is so damn cool and informative!
great rundown, and really awesome that you got to do this Chris, that must a been unreal
way back when in 2006 we met Justin randomly in a small bar in Luxembourg on a very quiet night the day after their show (there was like 8 people in there including us), who was just hanging out, super nice dude
This was absolutely amazing. What a generous behind the scenes of sound!
What an awesome video!!! Big Tool fan. Can´t wait to see Adam´s Rig Rundown!
Seriously props to Justin's tech! The way he looks, listens and reacts to everything Justin says or needs. Those dudes are the unsung heros of any show or tour. As a bass player myself I'm always watching videos of rig rundowns to try and learn as much as I can because of how much they know and the tricks they have. I've known Warren Lee who was Jeff Hanne man and now Gary Holt's guitar tech and I'm always peppering him with questions because he's a bass player himself and the experience and knowledge these guys have is amazing!
So, so cool. Thanks to all involved ❤
Fantastic job guys! This has to be one of the best rundowns ever! Please more bass player rig rundowns!!! Stay healthy! 😀
instantly the best of all the rig rundowns ever, legendary bass, direct signal capture. Amazingggg, so well done, thank you for showing us the isolated tones. that is EVERYTHING, wow!!!
A long time coming on this one. Super exciting and it's cool that Justin was enthusiastic talking about everything.
it's about time! thanks for this!
THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH... i have been waiting for this rig rundown for ever.
Justin Chancellor is just amazing - holy cow what a pedal board....
this is your best interview ever 😀
Finally! Thank you so much to everyone involved in making this happen!
That was one of the best, most enjoyable rundowns ive watched. Fantastic stuff!
This was an excellent interview. Kudos!
This was amazing. I love Tool and how they sculpt sound. Great video and I was able to see them in NYC in January and they were amazing. The sound was pristine.
Such gentlemen! Thank you for this Chris and co.
Man it's so awesome to see the artist sit there jam and explain their rig! So fucking awesome!
I’ve been waiting for this. Thank u soooo much. Freaking awesome.

A dream came true! This episode means a lot to many many people.. thank you guys
I literally waited 10 years for this video, showing every detail of tge best bass rig in rock/metal! Cheers to Rig Rundown
Absolutely amazing. Thank you for the video!
Idk what I expected Justin to be like in person but this is a fantastic interview. Such an iconic player, glad this finally came about!
My God Dude! I’ve waited soooooooo loooooooong!

Thank you! That was fantastic to see!! Excellent production.
Omg this was everything I hoped it would be after DECADES of waiting! Excellent job, guys!! 👏👏👏
you guys really went above and beyond love you guys!
You did a really good job asking the right questions. You didn't seem nervous one bit. Nice Job!
Two sets of strings every show! Wow. Love Justin and Tool. Amazing job getting him on the rundown.
Everything about this video is outstanding! Thank you so much everyone
