Master of poly-rhythms. I'm reminded of a joke I heard about Danny. People say he made a deal with the devil. No one knows what Danny got, but the devil got drum lessons.
Time asks Danny for his signature.
😂😂😂
Best drummer alive ; is the upstairs neighbor to Maynard and ... God exists
Not a poly rhythm but I agree.
Break it down. It's a 32nd on the off. Then filled with an off64rh.
Just kidding. I don't count. And suck at math
But I know there's no 5 in this
Drummer here. The time signatures, the drum fills, the percussion, the tuning of his snare … Danny is on another level.
Drummer here too. What that drummer said.
Imagine being able to get behind that kit for a hour
@@timwoodward8113 I would be spoiled for choice lol
@@timwoodward8113 first 25 minutes.. giggle and keep saying "wow". 5 minutes... choke lol
Drummer here, the polyrhythms. Mic drop.
My daughter is a classical musician (violin/piano/others) and she told me that at first she didn't like Pneuma compared to other Tool songs, saying it was "a bit too repetitive" but she listened to it again and decided she should analyze it as a "percussion concerto" and in that light it was "very very good". Whenever I can get my daughter to say any of "dad's music" is good, it's a win.
I find it hilarious that the metal head dad is trying to convince the classical child that metal is music. such an inverse of the norm.
Yeah, I'll sometimes play my 90's grunge favorites on acoustic guitar in the living room and she'll humor me by filling in the solos on her violin or snatch the chords out of the air and accompany on piano, but I can tell it's kind of boring for her compared to Chopin or Debussy. She definitely appreciates TOOL though. @@uns33n
@@uns33nwhat the classical child doesn’t understand is that Mozart and Beethoven etc were the metalheads of the day they just didn’t have distortion yet!
@kencoxdesign I always kinda feel bad for people that instantly intellectualize music. I fear that they have forgotten to just feel/enjoy the music sometimes. Like what does it make you feel rather than what does the note selection say you should feel (according to convention)
@@uns33n In my daughter's defense, the first time she sight-read her way through Chopin's Nocturne Op. 9 No. 3 in B Major, she said it was so beautiful it made her cry. She'll still listen to a lot of music just for the joy of it, but then she can also analyze the inner-workings and reveal another level of beauty and complexity that most people are unaware of.
"What do you want me to say, dude?"
Thats probably the best thing to say after watching that video.
After Neil Peart died, Danny probably now is the best rock drummer on the planet.
ngl even before he died danny over took top spot
@@SouPNaZi316I love both, but come on, even Danny IDOLIZED Peart.
Danny and Gavin Harrison
I love Rush and Tool and have for a long time. Both guys pointed other drummers in different directions when asked "who's best"- it's really just who's your favorite. We live in a world with people like Gavin Harrison and Virgil Donati in it for example.
There are quite a few amazing drummers out there, but Danny is a famous fucking legend!!!!
22 year long drummer here. Danny can be summed up with the following words: skill, ability, creativity, precision, stamina, and greatness. For me, he’s the best living drummer.
I think you forgot to add the word under-rated. Whenever people talk about the best drummers in the world, Danny rarely if ever gets mentioned. He somehow gets forgotten most of the time. Meanwhile, you take any of the drummers most people would mention and have THEM drum this song and they would be very hard-pressed, I'm sure of it.
I think its b/t him and Thomas Haake.
most of the days yes. somedays Gavin Harrison takes the spot tho
What are your opinions of Mike Portnoy?
@@oldscratch3535 my top tiers are Tomas Haake, Danny Carey, Marco Minneman (highly underrated), Matt Garstka, Mario Duplantier, Dylan Elise, Gavin Harrison, Benny Grebb, Chris Adler when he was with Lamb of God, and also guys like Mike Portnoy and Mike Mangini. Probably missing a few, honorable mention for El Estepario Siberiano
Danny Carey once said in an interview that he doesn't play beats, he plays songs. I think "Pneuma" is clearly one of those songs that showcase that fact the most.
Great reaction btw, guys.
Yup. Most tool song's are just long Danny drum solos.
First time I’ve seen Judson mesmerized. Danny is a beast of odd time signatures and innovation.
I have the same mesmerised look every time i watch this tool vid.. amazes me without fail watching Danny drum 🤯🤌
He was finally impressed.
I was thinking the same, you can see him counting lol
Seeing Jutson being like a dear in the headlights, looking insanely confused for most of the song was exactly what I imagined😂😂. I think we broke him guys.
I've been a drummer for 35 years and I am just as mesmerized u are. 😝
Physico-mechanical testing laboratory assistant here. Ambidexterity level of his, how he feels the song, and the precision of every move. I watched this drum cam before, I swear the overwhelming feeling that I feel (no pun intended) almost makes me cry. The bridge in this song reminds me of a storm, starts really peaceful but as it plays further it gradually builds the power, and this very extended crescendo on the drum part combined with a switch between synth and guitar, really brings me somewhere far far away from my reality, almost like a trans.
What a gorgeous piano intro to this video. Absolutely stunning.
one of his best so far I think
Crazy Mary is a great song by P.J. Sounds a lot like Neil Young
@@DickJochs-sz1hyits actually a cover by pearl jam, great tune
@@filthypete434 My bad. All these years and I only heard their version.
I just listened to the original and it's... fine. But this rendition is so haunting it just pulls you in and keeps you there. Really makes you listen to it. Fantastic.
For the first time I saw Jetson so hypnotizingly confused and focused for the entire song.
Great Measures indeed!
This was from the first tour after the album and you can tell that they were so excited and proud to play this song live for their fans. It’s so infectious the excitement they have it puts a smile on my face watching it every time
Haha, 'infectious', nice one ;)
My man was mesemerized by the Octopus! Thats the longest ive ever seen him not say something....
I never tire of watching this or listening to others hear/analyze it for the first time.
Homie is looking around like, "anyone else see that sh*t?!" LOL. That's how good Danny is! Thank you for your reaction 🖤
That vid has 33 million views and I’m 32 million of them. Danny’s performance in this video literally push this song to my top 3
The guy is not of this realm. Legend has it, his arms were forged by ancient metalurgists and his wrists were carved from diamond. At least his elbows were store bought so there's hope for us all.
I was in the 4th row, center, at this performance. It was the 6th or so song out of about 12, I believe. Danny is a beast and the whole show was just as incredible.
Tool is one of my favorite bands ever! They are the zeppelin and rush of our generation 😊 Danny Carrey is one of the greatest drummers along with John Bonham.please do the song "H" by Tool...it captures their writing to the fullest.great reaction!
I’d love to see a reaction of Tool Right in Two and then Judson figure out the chords on piano and play it
As a drummer, if I could only use one word to describe that, it would be DYNAMICS.
What a sad intro, but beautiful.
Det er okay, Tommy -du må gerne fælde en tåre, hvis du trænger. "DK i dit blod, piano i dit ho'ed".
I think maby many drummers are able to learn how to play it, but creating such a master piece is next level!
TOOL forever❤🤘
Exactly. That's what many ppl don't understand.
There are children who can play Mozart at the age of 10,but they could never compose such music!
Watching him from five feet away was the most incredible thing I've ever seen. He's as good of a human as he is a drummer. Well done on all of your content, fellas. Keep it up!
love seeing richard getting so into it while judson is just discovering it for the first time. Really enjoying the channel lately guys, keep it up!!
Intro is haunting played in that key ! Outstanding video on ALL accounts!
one of the best drummers ever, no doubt
What an honest reaction to a masterpiece of music....Danny Carrey is on another level on this song. I have watched this video so many times, seeing people's reactions to it people are always in awe.... goosebumps*" Best reaction to this video, respect to Great Measures 🤘🏼✨
Thank you
Yes! I was hoping you would review Pneuma...beautiful intro btw Judson!
A Crazy Mary intro! Wow, that was nice 😊
Danny is the ultimate beast behind a kit! He possesses all the skills and then some and we as fans love him for it! Just an amazing drummer!
Tool army has been summoned
Loved the nonverbal conversation around 11:30. Great video as usual
Thanks again for making these long work days more enjoyable!
Thank you so very much for doing my favorite song ever, appreciate it 🙏
Ive seen them play this live 3x now, most recently a couple weeks ago in Toronto. It is absolutely mind blowing every single time. Tool shows are an experience.
Love the facial expressions from another skilled musician watching Danny!
Watched the drum cam vid a 100 times...I still smile and jam along.....so awesome
love the reaction
Just loved that you two watched this. Love your reactions and I love this song.
this channel is so under rated
Thank you. It’s been a fun 3 and a half months. 🤘
I just fell in love with Tool from this song. The guitarpart is mesmerizing and the drums are phenomenal
I was there for this. Kicked ass.
I was waiting for this one. Also, I saw this video well over 100 times, it's simply mesmerizing.
You could see the craft appreciation on Judson's face and investment like rarely before.
I love watching people react to first hearing this and especially judson i think his mouth was dropped for most of that performance Danny is sub human keep up the great vids guys
I too have seen this video many, many times and I always find it amazing. Danny is a beast.
Knew Judson would get it... great reaction boys.
for Judson to NOT pause a track.....speaks VOLUMES
Danny is definitely the Larry Bird of the drum set.😂 Well done.!!!
I love your reactions. Authentic.
The thing I really like about this video isn't just the drum cam, I honestly think the audio mix is better than the studio version.
Danny was sent to this earth for one purpose .. slappin drums ! Just started this video can't wait to see the reaction ! Spiral out keep it going
This is the song I've been waiting to see Judson react to since I discovered this channel.
This is the first time I've seen him riveted the whole time and like WOW. 😊
I love the facials as people experience this performance for the first time. First, it's legitimately impressed, then confused, then just downright frustrated that this rock drummer is so insanely good.
Great vid!
I was so happy to see this here..had this song in my head tonight and I can and do watch this over and over..I read somewhere that each electric pad takes an hour or so to program..
..Carey shows such mastery over his instrument that he reminds me of an amazing painter who uses drumsticks for brushes..
..only watching this once tonight cos I might make my neck sore from moving it at strange angles attempting to keep time..lol
Xo
I think people are missing the fact that the message of the song is also brilliant too.
It's an amazing piece of music wrapped around a message from the Gods.
great reaction guys
If I had this level of precision in anything I'd be set for life
I felt the same as you. Wow, how is he doing all that and it's just one guy? Idk how drummers manage to have each arm and leg moving at different speeds simultaneously, but they do and Carey is one of the best to ever do it.
Crazy Mary....beautiful my friend. ❤🇨🇦
There's an economy of motion in his playing. Even during his tremendous rolls and polyrhythms, there's absolutely no wasted movement.
#33 - Larry Bird - Boston Celtics - Bird Is The Word!
Love Crazy Mary!
Brilliant. Richard with glee knowing what’s coming next. Judson visualizing brilliance with his own brilliance. Fucking amazing for us mere mortals.
That video is amazing.
Bro in the corner grinnin, that’s the face I make when I watch these reactions to Danny’s playing.
It’s like, oh you like that?
Wait, he’s about to blow your mind!
I've watched this video sooo many times, the guy is unbelievable.
I once saw that somebody said that "legend had it. Danny Carey made a deal with the devil. No word on what Danny got but the devil got drum lessons"
Yes!!! Waiting for this!!!!!
Loving Judsons piano intros!! Proceed Richard.
Couldnt tell you how many times I have watched this performance. Just phenomenal
YES YES YES! Their best song. I think it's hard to top this one together with Invincible. These songs are pure magic to me. Everything in these two songs make sense. How they each dive into their instruments and utilize everything is from out of this world.
You guys made my day by reacting to this masterpiece!
Keep'em coming you guys are awesome!
Thank you!
Yes. Definitely give us invincible. It's gonna be flipping awesome.
just saw them for the second time in ten years in november. justin really has to wave the tightness out of his arms after a while, and no wonder. he's by far the most underappreciated member of this phenomenal band. what his hands have to do to make this music is almost completely unbelievable. so many crazy repetitive motions to make these songs sound right.
Great intro music❤
Danny Carey is definitely one of the greats. He will forever be one of my favourite drummers together with Sean Reinert (RIP my friend), Gene Hoogland, Bill Ward, Joey Jordison (also RIP, legend), Dave Lombardo...
Great analysis of the drumming. Probably seen that video 100 times as well.
Nice double reaction, one that watches the video for the first time, and the other that has watched it for around the same times as I have 😄
Richard over there chair dancing and Judson the stillest I've ever seen him.
Take a bottle, take it down, pass it around Pass it A round.....
That's why he gets the honor of wearing Larry Byrd's jersey. He's the goat
I'm not sure I have seen Judson so riveted to a vid, he is locked in on this one!!
Crazy marry is an awesome song! Also love watching Richard Rick out on the side
That's why they call him "The Octopus"!
I'm at least 100 of those 33 million. The Danny Carey drum cam is the best video on youtube.
Reactions on reactions. Damn I am here for it. LOL
This is gold!
Danny plays a hybrid drum kit. He has both acoustic and electronic drum equipment. He tends to have all acoustic cymbals, but the drums tend to be a mixture. The snare drum you mention is electronic, but it is much higher-end than most you would see out there. That pad has the capability to sense where and how hard he hits notes on the pad and the rim, giving him the ability to do cross-stick, rimshots, ghost notes, etc. just like on an acoustic drum. Something that drummers often notice is how his hi-hat is in the middle of the kit (versus to his left ), using a remote pedal setup. That is very ergonomic because it allows him to play open-handed (his arms aren't crossed over) the majority of the time.
One of the things that strikes me most in his drumming is how efficient it looks. His arms never cross, he never overstretches and it just gives this vibe of effortlessness.
@DawidUliczny-ro7eo exactly my point. You or I may not be able to play the way he does regardless of equipment, but the way his kit is set up contributes greatly to his playing because the comfort and efficiency allow for longer playing and seemless movements.
You just witnessed the God of Drummers. He is the almighty. The Alpha and Omega.
I love Danny ! Tool army here. 😊
Great measures!
I love the look when people are counting in their heads trying to figure out the pattern... It's a puzzle! I believe its 33/8. What a song - technically, emotionally, lyrically.... Ghandarvas!
This song and Invincible both give me chills. Jusf amazing music
Seen him do this live twice. He’s my 🐐
The beautiful of this video is Richard smiling in awe to this masterpiece. Danny in his tastiest mood in this song, you can only smile with his fills and grooves. In 9:38 lies my favorite fill of them all.
*Stares bewilderedly after it ends* "What do you want me to say dude?" LOL perfect response
Never seen Judson so captivated haha
