Great vid, Manny’s great, highly adaptable! Thx for asking, Huart. When I was working a inet/ Indy radio variety show, L.A., ‘06-‘08. I'm 38 years old, been recording music for 25 years now. Went to school for audio production back in the day, worked in a few commercial studios, spent most of my life making DIY punk/hardcore records in basements and garages. Just this month I decided (early midlife crisis?) to go all in on trying to make my home studio my main source of income and survival. I needed this video right now, thanks Manny!

What you shared today only deepened that already solid base of reverence I have for you. Thank you so much. This was such an inspiration for me and the long, difficult process I'm going through to put together a studio for myself and my passion. In such a short time you've turned me onto mics and outboard gear that is both accessible and exciting. It's been easy to get discouraged and also for my plans to start simple and then somehow I let myself get tricked into them becoming more complicated, which means more expensive, which means more time and difficulty and me being further from getting to what I envisioned in the first place. If I could turn my garage into a studio where I could have thumping drummers and Hiwatt, Orange and Ampeg amps roaring and recording into the night in the comfort of my own home, it would certainly be something worth saving and spending on. I guess I'll really have to look into it further. I.kind of assumed it'd be _waaay_ further out of reach to turn the garage into a studio. Duuuuuude! Thank you for caring and sharing! One of my fav DF Tracks! Check my new band called The Chavez Ravine. LP is called “Uno” thanks again for saying hello Brother🎉
Manny, this was a wonderful vid, really hit home for me. Your love of music first and workingman's ethic on gear, plus having what you need to do the job and building what you can and holding on to the "cool toys" of the past is perfect. And you are a human being, which seems to be one of the biggest challenges of our time. And then the trick is to develop skills, build strengths and work on non-strengths. It isn't easy (never has been) to make a living making music, and being practical and well set up is the key to it, in my opinion. At the heart of it is love and respect for the music and the people who make it. The music you record is miles from what I do (Americana & Roots), but everything you said applies perfectly. When I run across people just starting out, my advice is going to be, always remember the love and respect, get what you need rather than what you think you want, and watch Manny's video. Thanks!
Really nice Manny, thank you for the guided tour. You have some great mics, I’ve seen the other video. And I always wanted MA5’s since 2006 when I started. Great instruments, everything. Killer intro too, of course that jammed. Looking forward to more of your videos. Condolences, I know how you feel when it comes to Dad. ❤
Condolences on the loss of both your father and your friend from the Locusts. I'm just emerging from my own variation of the Sleestack dormant season myself today. 😊 Trying to detangle and do some self care on all the fronts as well. My friend's boot helps me like your friend's tee shirt. ❤
The hardest part for me is to get musicians to trust me with their work, either mixing their recordings or recording in their space. Tulsa is a live music town and recording scares the crap out of these guys!
I love ya Manny, seriously dude. You're awesome and I always learn cool stuff from you. Doesn't matter about fancy studios or houses whatever, just the music!
Thanks for saying it straight, brother. I am over on the other side of the planet on a very small and insular island trying to keep that genuine spirit alive with whoever I can convince to trust that they (and by extension I) can get something amazing by making the miost of what we have by putting in the effort.
@@mannysmiclocker Other side of this big ol' rock, Cyprus. Originally a So Cal boy. Was Jose (Breeders) also in Custom Made Scare? My memory of back then is a bit dodgy. If so, he was super cool and made one of my nights by convincing Kim to come see my old band once.
Thank you for sharing Manny :) I really enjoy your content. Thank you showing real life is not always easy or glitzy or whatever, it’s real, it’s hard but it’s glorious :) I wish you continued success. I appreciate you showing if something means that much to you, you will find a way :)
Im in the visual arts as well and I always tell people, "The Arts are a war of attrition." You have to have an adaptive survival mindset. BTW love the mixed drums and cymbals... ocd on certain visual things pays no dividends on sonic stuff.
Cheers to single room lockout producers who work with full bands 🎉. I feel blessed to have place dedicated to art even if I have to struggle sometimes... but I'm finally turning a meaningful profit after a year of losing money and it feels amazing. I'm with manny on not working with pop stars and electronic music. I gotta work with styles that include more human error. The mic placement, the room, the influence of the artists' hands. I'm also the dude taking wooden furniture off the street and using the wood to make all sorts of stuff 😂
@@mannysmiclocker you touched on a point that a lot of people don't realize; wood is no longer cheap and us DIY people are now forced to either buy premade or repurpose. Good thing the transient culture of LA makes it easy to find plenty of reusable items 🙏
I'm not in LA so i don't have nearly the same challenge. But it sure makes me feel better about me woeking out of my paeents house while saving up money haha!

Godbless all of the fighters out there…and may the peace of the Lord guide that journey.
Amen and thank you for sharing your own experience 🎉
Really admire Manny's earnest take on the music business in 2023. Such a likable and hard working guy!
Thrilled you enjoyed and thanks for the kind words!
Manny is the coolest guy and these words are gold!!
Wow! Massive, massive respect. Dedication to your art, very brave and I wish you all the very best. Great to hear someone tell it like it is.
Thank so much for sharing and thrilled it all made sense :)
Love Manny!! He’s keeping it real!
Thanks for Tuning in!
Hey Manny-just bought your new course. Hey, so your first Black Bag looks to be a chain bag for an electric motor hoist-which you would let the spare chain store in before you fly Lighting Truss. 🙂
Thank you so much! Ha cool and I knew it was some kinda industry bag 🎉
We need more content like this.
Thanks for sharing 🎉
My keeped for a lifetime video. Very inspiring and supportive!! Thank you Warren, God bless Many!!
Thanks ever so much Rick!
Super Sweet Thank you for sharing and we appreciate Warren for having us ;)
Awesome stuff! The real deal! Thanks for sharing your view and way of getting things to level you want to be! Gave me tons of inspiration!
That’s awesome and was totally the point of me doing this video! Win! Win!
Manny's just great, so down to earth and great work ethic. I'd be recording with him if we'd be in L.A. cuz love how the opening track sounds done by him..
Thanks K and thrilled you enjoyed that traxk as much as I❤
@@mannysmiclocker yeah man, it sounds exciting and big. The way to go! 👍🏻👍🏻
Love the realness of Manny
Thank you for sharing 🎉
How cool to see you on here! Still spinning "I'm An Athlete" to this day. That track sounds killer.
Thanks!
Grateful to be here making these videos and Thrilled people like you a true Artist enjoyed ;) Made my day reading and appreciated you sharing that!
Appreciated all the kinds words and thrilled you enjoyed!
Ending was the best part! Thanks for the tour Manny!
Manny Rules!
Ha!Thanks for tuning in 🎉
Condolences on the loss of both your father and your friend from the Locusts. I'm just emerging from my own variation of the Sleestack dormant season myself today. 😊 Trying to detangle and do some self care on all the fronts as well. My friend's boot helps me like your friend's tee shirt. ❤
Thank you for the very kind message ❤ yes it’s a struggle but we have to always try to be better people and artists!
Thanks again manny and warren.
Youre an inspiration.
Thanks for tuning in Henry🎉
@@mannysmiclocker nothing but Respect bro.
The hardest part for me is to get musicians to trust me with their work, either mixing their recordings or recording in their space. Tulsa is a live music town and recording scares the crap out of these guys!
Hang in there and I did plenty of free sessions so I could earn their trust! Good luck my friend and appreciate you sharing your own story 🎉
I've got Jensen speakers in my cabinets in my studio I play guitar through!!! Have for years!
The best period!
There is more than just real world info in this video. There is real world hope!
Thank you for sharing that! Awesome 🎉
Fantastic. Thanks Manny and Warren for sharing this episode. It´s a down to earth studio with soul. Greetz. Carsten ✌🏼
Thanks for tuning in🎉 PLAP Rocks !
Yup, ..real nice song 🤘🏻 .

Very cool studio tour Manny!!! Amazing what you can do with a small space and limited gear but you make it rock!!!
That’s our everyday goal 🎉
Manny is the coolest. Thanks so much!
Thank you for sharing and tuning in! PLAP Rocks
I love ya Manny, seriously dude. You're awesome and I always learn cool stuff from you. Doesn't matter about fancy studios or houses whatever, just the music!
Thank you for the kind words G ;)
@@mannysmiclocker great vid, Manny. You obviously know how to get the most out of what you have. I loved the drum cases for cables, too. 👍
Manny is the G.O.A.T
Thanks for saying it straight, brother. I am over on the other side of the planet on a very small and insular island trying to keep that genuine spirit alive with whoever I can convince to trust that they (and by extension I) can get something amazing by making the miost of what we have by putting in the effort.
That’s the Spirit! What island? I worked close to 7 years off and on Oahu 🎉
@@mannysmiclocker I also just realised, 6th Street. Downtown rehearsal building? Lots of memories and great music made there.
@@rattfink9awe yeah! We love our old stomping grounds
Thank you for sharing Manny :) I really enjoy your content. Thank you showing real life is not always easy or glitzy or whatever, it’s real, it’s hard but it’s glorious :) I wish you continued success. I appreciate you showing if something means that much to you, you will find a way :)
Thank you and I do care what you think and hope you enjoyed ;)
Yeah I put it all out there 🎉 PLAP Rules!
Manny's kick drum feedback loop trick is the best, I use it on every acoustic drum mix.
Ha OG🎉
Im in the visual arts as well and I always tell people, "The Arts are a war of attrition." You have to have an adaptive survival mindset. BTW love the mixed drums and cymbals... ocd on certain visual things pays no dividends on sonic stuff.
Thanks for sharing and yes you are correct 🎉
Loved every minute of this, thanks guys! Now off to find the Gorilla and peavey amp on the interwebs!
$70 bucks usually lol love that amp
Jamming! Thanks Manny!
PLAP Rocks🎉
Chapeau!
Ha you and I are the same! Hitting the Thrift Store later ❤ thank you for sharing 🎉
@@mannysmiclocker you touched on a point that a lot of people don't realize; wood is no longer cheap and us DIY people are now forced to either buy premade or repurpose. Good thing the transient culture of LA makes it easy to find plenty of reusable items 🙏

Well said - socials have created this false illusion of what is really going on , esp in this crazy industry - not easy!!
Thrilled you enjoyed 🎉 and True!
Awesome and honest guy!
Appreciated 🎉
Ya! I really like the sound!!
Thanks for checking out!
This is mean how he runs the studio as if it’s a film set department. Everything has it’s place and is organised to save space and be movable
Aw so cool thanks for checking out and yes you can say it’s like a set ;) I appreciated the message and PLAP Rocks!
This video demands multiple viewings. Outstanding.
Appreciated you checking out and hopefully something can be useful and inspiring 🎉
Manny seems to be such a sweet guy. No bs or fluffy but still sweet.
Thrilled you enjoyed tour and mini honest rant 🎉
You left your B roll audio in. Great video thank you
Ha that’s weird and cool 🎉

Love the vid. Sounds like there is some audio that shouldn't be there at a couple of close up shots like at 27:19
Probably we did this video right as I was finalizing the move 🎉
