At 2:17:30 The fact Dave doesn't bite his tounge and speaks his mind straight up like a man! Always earned SOO much respect for him from me. And to say l that in front of Mike when he was clearly heartbroken about it but he seems to have moved on and not held a grudge against Randall at Mesa, That conversation at the time stamp and on, seems to offer a little closure to Mike, Love you for that Dave, respect to you Mike cot not holding a grudge and being able to move on from it. Lots of other people might not have. Big respect for everyone on this show.
1:09:50 - The third amp was given to Andy Johns (who produced the VH albums of that era). The amp was moved to a purple headshell, and given to Andy. It later was sold to Brent Woods of the band Wildside, which Andy produced in 1991, at 5150 studio. Someone out there owns a purple Soldano SLO head, with serial number “5150”.
Every single show gets better and better. Mike is super outgoing. I can’t believe he doesn’t have more of a UA-cam presence! Same thing for Mr. Suhr! Marc/Dave: you guys are going down in the history books. You are literally chronicling the masters of our industry over the last 30 or 40 years. This stuff just doesn’t exist anywhere else. What a treasure. Cheers.
I fairly recently discovered tone talk and am now having a field day of going through the back catalogue. The list of legendary guests you've had on is truly impressive!
Around the 2:30 mark Dave and Mike are talking about modeling vs real tube amps. I feel like what he is trying to say is a real tube amp you have to wrestle or fight, has life and breath, it has character and a unique voice, when you play or hear a tube amps in the flesh, it's electric!! For the record I've owned all the modeling gear since the original pod and just sold my axe fx III, helix, Kemper, and currently own a BE100 deluxe, Mark V 90 watt, Badlander 100, EVH 5150 III 100 Watt with the UA OX Box and I've never been happier. We live in an amazing time!! I have so much respect for these pioneers in the music business. I really did not know about Mike Soldano and his amps, I must have one...
Tone-Talk is the best place to be while on confinement !.....Second time watching this episode and still find it awesome !......Thanks Guys !.................Lou.... Quebec

Missed the live show, but, having some coffee and watching, now. I don't know if Dave and Mike read these comments, but, I don't think they really understand how cool it is to just sit back and listen to their stories. Thanks Marc !!!
Love these stories, I remember reading guitar magazines in the late 80's and all through the 90's and spying on all the backline salivating. You guys are bringing back great memories..Cheers
Hi, thank you again for another great show. Been watching these for about 6 months, not live though because live airing times are difficult in Finland. Great to get insights from all these masters of their craft.
It was great to hear you guys mention David Turner....he has been one of my best friends for the better part of 12 years. I feel like I know you guys just from all of the conversations I have had with Dave where he mentions talking to Dave Friedman and Mike Soldano. We constantly tease him about the SLO that Mike made for him with the custom face plate that we call the "Who the F8ck is David Turner" model LOLZ I have one of the rack mount SLO's from 1990 (90366) that David was gracious enough to let me have which I have carried to NUMEROUS tone shoot outs at friends houses and even to James Lugo's place when he had roughly 40 amps there and I thought mine slayed them all... :-P. Anyhow, thanks for taking the time to create this show, as now I have been listening to all the old ones and think its absolutely great you guys are doing this. Really brings back great memories and gives us a lot of insight as to the history that you all have seen and been a part of. Its VERY generous of you all to donate the amount of time that you are to this!!
Bill Niersbach Thanks so much for this post and your story about David Turner. Awesome to hear and we really appreciate you watching the show and taking the time to post.
Just catching up and watched this one. Wow-- what a nice guy! Totally not selling anything-- makes me want to buy one of his amps. With all these legends, it might be nice to always cover certain basics-- where they grew up, their initial inspiration, how they got started, how they met Dave, etc. Mike mentioned how he worked in a body shop and learned to weld and bend metal. That's a crucial detail to how he got where he is. And don't be afraid to talk about old cars, etc.-- it's always interesting to hear about people's other interests and hobbies. It gives insights into what makes them tick. I just look at this as capturing important history for future generations. Don't want to miss any details!! Thanks and great job as always- Andy
I watched it live for the most part but fell asleep.... Long week, but finished watching it this morning.. the content is great... I love the 4 hour shows and how interesting all these stories can be. Thank you Marc and Dave
Great show, some very interesting info from Mike and Dave.I have been playing for over 45years and since I've played a Soldano, I've never needed another amp.
These stories are so badass I have so much admiration and gratitude for all of these insanely talented and historically important guests! Jake is still my all time favorite guest but I love them all!
What an awesome hangout! Too bad I missed it live… I would have asked Mike how it came about to work with the late great Gary Moore in the early 90’s. As far as I know Gary only used the crunch channel of the SLO, but in my humble opinion, this was his best guitar tone ever. Yet again, we’re talking about Gary Moore here, he could make a crappy little gorilla amp sound amazing.
Mike is a classy guy but I can.t say the same about Dave F. And I bet that if where Randall Smith intead of Mike Soldano, guess whose ass would be kissed. Mr Friedman there.s no point in bashing an amp like the Recto. After all, slo and rectos are an updated copy of marshall/ Fender amp.
I have a purple 1992 Soldano Hot Rod 50 half stack. I bought a Kemper earlier this year (amazing) and sold most of my amps. I cannot bring myself to sell the Soldano. It's my favorite hard rock amp of all time.
Thanks Marc and Dave for putting out these videos they are really cool. My only regret is not being able to watch them live, I just can't sit still through a 3-4 hour video. I break em up over the next week after they come out.
Awesome show! Kept me entertained during my 8 hour road trip home this past Monday. This show is better than a "tell all book"! Not only do you get great insight into products and industry, but you get all these behind the scene stories that are just awesome!!! Thanks again Marc and Dave!!!!
Hi Mark & Dave. Really enjoyed the show. It’s really great to dig into the details of gear and let people stretch out and discuss thing properly. So rare in this day and age. By the way Phillip McKnight uses a company to manage t-shirts for him. He doesn’t need to hold stock and do it himself as they do all the work. These should be on the History channel because they document so much tonal history! Disappointed that y'all didn't hit the 5 hour standard! Lol Thank you for the time and insights!
Mike is a fantastic guy and the father of the modern high gain amp. Great show as usual. I'm glad to hear that he is going to keep his company alive. As an SLO owner I can tell you no amp on this planet sounds like a cranked SLO. Its a completely unique tone and built to last many lifetimes. Dave is also a great guy. I've had the pleasure of meet Dave and he is great. I also own a BE-100 I plan on doing videos on both of these amps soon.
The Crazy thing is that " Tone" you're chasin' in your mind ... changes with time. A lot of little things go into putting the lightning in the bottle. Thank God for these guys and guys like them. Tone (IMHO) is not something you can keep. It is something you experience. Hopefully over and over... These Builders...get you really close to that, "again and again" feel. Gentlemen... Thank you
What a genuine modest guy and total badass genius. Soldano SLO100 to this day is pretty much the only 6l6 amp that I will touch because somehow it has the midrange of Marshall and balls for days unlike the usual American hifi-like variants.
SRV used Fender Bogner & Marshalls live together w/his hands made that tone I could see him liking a SLO. Once tracking a blues rock guitarist in studio well his amp blew up during the scratch trx & we finished w/my 5150 on the clean chn w/crunch got some of the best blues rock tone I've ever heard he was surprised he thought that was a Metal only amp. SLO's 5150's can have lots of tones if you retube w/the right tubes & know how to dial em in. Btw that guy was a SRV Clapton Hendrix fan.
Funny hearing them talk about the feedback you get from a real tube amp. I experienced this firsthand recently. Been playing cheap amps and modelers for 25 years. Finally got my first real 2x12 all tube amp recently. It touched me in places I've never been touched before. They're just different though. I have the Amplitube Soldano & it's the most amazing tone I've ever gotten. But for feel, tubes rule. It's the difference between listening to a CD vs hearing the band play live. They're both great, but just two different experiences.
Mike built me a 50w Lucky 13 just before he closed up shop. One of the better experiences of my life and the outcome was an amplifier I feel is the best made in the world. Period.
Marc, I got to thinking...after watching this for the tenth time,lol.. I thought, since I now have a plexi type amp... what or if its possible to make a plexi but contained so it would then go to a power section all in one box LOLOL. I know it kills the output tubes running max volume, but to have 'that' sound as the preamp per say.. then into a mosfet power section.. Of course, I am sure everyone has thought the same thing.. Great vid, nonetheless.. its become my Christmas go to Tone-Talk for last couple years... being an early Soldano user, I just have a love for Mike. So this delivers fun stuff, every time I watch it. Peace, bruv Eric
Top stuff guys. Mike would be happy to know that the Fractal models are produced the same way as the IK version (pulling an amp apart and measuring components). The HBE/Be and SLO/X88 are some of my personal favourite Fractal models (and I own a real Soldano to compare them to).
Why would he be happy with someone stealing his tones and profiting from it with no kickback to the man who was able to scratch and claw his way to making a name for himself only to have someone negate all his effort by ripping his amp into a modeler making it unnecessary for anyone to think about buying the real thing anymore. Its a shitty as the story told in this video about mesa boogie ripping off his preamp design for the rectifier series of amps.
But then you could say it was all ripped off with Marshall and Fender...it's 100% the Cathode Follower that makes it sound the way it does...It's still different though more what they wanted to do trying all the weirder stuff with switchers, amplifying transistors etc, so no it's not exactly the same.
Nooooo it's NOT the Same noneeeee of the 6l6s now are gooddd it's shit....Still can't make something close to the STR387s 0 and double 00 getter tall bottles. Find them man.
I used to use an SLO when I was gigging big rooms in the '90's. Terrific amp. I recently tried an HR25 but it really didn't work for me. Guess I'm getting old! I did love the HR's "Normal" channel though. An amp with two of those channels would be it for me.
Great show again guys. 😃 @1:51:35 "Now my pedalboard weighs as much as my amp!" Hmmmm... mine does! Does that make me wrong? 😜 It does make the craziest space noises I've ever heard though.
The 5150 has an additional gain stage, though heavily padded, and the tone stack is driven by an inverting feedback amplifier instead of a cathode follower. It to is padded and has a high pass filter.
My Lord, you guys are knocking it out of the park show after show! I think it is awesome seeing the guys that actually make amps pretty much calling b.s. on vintage gear being "magical" or the ultimate tone like Mike and Dave saying the two amps are pretty much the same, and I can read people pretty well, I can tell they know that people are crazy for dropping stupid money on this stuff. See, this is the kind of thing the marketing departments at these massive companies just don't get, they don't listen to their customers, they don't give a damn about quality and just shove their crappy products down our throats and think we should just take em and pay their over-inflated prices for barely playable gear! You guys bring on real people, share your personal experiences with us all and display your love and dedication to all your potential customers, not to try to sell, but to try to genuinely share knowledge with like-minded people. This, in return, will lead to sales and to further growth of your business! People want to see the faces of the people building their gear because we can all relate to hard work, ingenuity, dedication, and craftsmanship! We want to know and understand just what path in life brought you guys into creating your products, and just how you went about attaining it. Hearing and understanding that most of you guys are tinkering around in the garage and developing some of the finest products made is awesome. You know, most of the innovation throughout our history on earth was developed in the backyard garage by the average DIY guys, hot-rodders and tinkerers, not on the chalkboards by the engineers or designers, not discounting those folks in any way either. I've heard of most all the boutique amplifier manufacturers and never really considered purchasing one, but now I see the folks and hear the stories that we all can relate to, it makes me want to support each and every one of you guys! I just wished my wallet had the backing to do so lol!
I will be for sure! I'm playing catch up as we speak. I'm about halfway through the John 5 Dave Black show right now! If I ever get the chance to take Egnater's amp building class, I will be there, especially after finding out that he has influenced so many in the industry. He seems like the go-to "master" from all I have seen on your show.
It's so interesting, and the context of 2021 and 2022, to hear Mike talking about things like DC heaters and the loop level and so on. It really was the seed to what became the Next Generation slo.
I love this show. Glad Mike Soldano made some positive comments about Randy Rhoads. He never gets mentioned as often as he should, most likely due to his short career. Still though, this show is fantastic. Thanks to all who have participated over the years (I realize I’m commenting Amon an old video; so what). Special thanks to unsung hero Marc Huzansky (Who’s-askin’?)… …. and also Randy Rhoads. 😊
Michael Houser from Widespread Panic. RIP. Very awesome simple lead sound from SLO100. He had an amazing clean tone as well..check out late 90's early 2000's live shows for his best sounds
really enjoyed this.. ive had a HR50+ for 19 years now. Always wanted 2 know more about Mike + his amps. These guys are a wealth of knowledge! 1 comment was odd 2 me tho, " i never designed it 2b clean,.. u know, its a rock amp." well the very best + heaviest rock albums involve clean tones. GnR, old metallica, Scorpions, skid row, Led Zep.. everybody except Megadeth lol (evn they use a little).
SLO 100 and SLO platforms are the Vectors of Amps . MADE IN USA . studio workhorse, military Grade , Industrial strength. ampmlifers . I have dialed these amps in many sessions, achieving astonishing results , also used the Friedman 50 & 100 , super nice amps ..
In 1991 I played the very first 2 Mesa Dual rectifier amps that arrived in Norway, one with EL34s and one with 6L6GC tubes, and it was mentioned that the preamp section was based on the SLO, and the power section like a hyped up 100 watt version of the Marshall JTM45. The dual caliber amps were virtually the SP77 preamp combined with the mark series power sections ... with some alterations
Another amazing hang out. I was wondering if Dave ever thought about doing an amp exchange with some of these guys. Dave building an amp for Mike and visa versa, would be super cool imho. Love the comments on the Recto and Modelers ;-)
This is crazy- 2022 and I can watch my fave Amp Builder badasses talk tone … years ago we all figured amp builders never would be cool together. And Classic cars as well??? 😵🔥🤘🏻
Great episode, loved hearing all the stories. Mike is a great guy. Is it wrong my eyes kept drifting towards Mona? Maybe I watched the movie Mannequin to much. Lol
That was like direct fresh air: "Those bastards just basically stole it" It's the same what happens with pedal companies like jhs(angry Charlie and Andy timmons pedal it's a knockoff of a mi crunchbox, wich is a knockoff of a Marshall guvnor)
I have one of those JCA20 amps that Dave modded. Has the standard BE mod, SAT switch, effects loop, and clean channel. It's an absolute monster! I also did a few mods myself: added a choke, upgraded the OT, added a Depth control, and upgraded most of the preamp caps and resistors. Really, really cool amp. Wonder if this was the inspiration for the PT20 and Runt amps?

What a genuine modest guy and total badass genius. Soldano SLO100 to this day is pretty much the only 6l6 amp that I will touch because somehow it has the midrange of Marshall and balls for days unlike the usual American hifi-like variants.
mike rocks. another awesome show marc and dave . thank you so much
wow Mike , all your stories are super cool , much fun to hear !*_*!
This is the most epic amp discussion ever! Love it, great to hear all of this from the horses mouth.
One of the Best Shows Ever !!!
Great way to start the year. Thanks guys!
Francisco Gurdian We agree! Happy New Year to you!
Francisco Gurdian We agree! Happy New Year to you!
Another great episode! I love amps! Keep bringing great amp builders! Hopefully you guys do episodes with Rivera and Bogner too.
Great Interview, Mr Soldano seems like a nice guy. Wish I could afford an SLO.
This was amazing. The rectifier and 5150 story is crazy. And the Syclone is a GMC. It was an all wheel drive turbo v6 with a intercooler.
Great show one of the best I've heard.
They're both great, but just two different experiences.
really great episode Mike's a true legend!
Mike built me a 50w Lucky 13 just before he closed up shop. One of the better experiences of my life and the outcome was an amplifier I feel is the best made in the world. Period.
I just got a Friedman BE Mini and Soldano SLO Mini and they're the most fun bedroom practice amps ever!
This is gold! Soldano is a legend
thanks and Mike is awesome!
Peace, bruv
Eric
Top stuff guys. Mike would be happy to know that the Fractal models are produced the same way as the IK version (pulling an amp apart and measuring components). The HBE/Be and SLO/X88 are some of my personal favourite Fractal models (and I own a real Soldano to compare them to).
It's not all that different pretty much a marshall with 6l6s and a significan't clipped stage. I don't know how you want to compare that to a fractal.
FYI, “kickback” has a very negative connotation.
I use the soldano in the Axe FX III daily and I like it alot. It has helped me figure out what real amps/cabs/speakers I want to buy.
Another great show guys!! Have a great Namm show!
Shawn Tubbs Thanks Shawn!!!
Great show with lots of information thanks guys.
Thanks!!
Such an great post and thank you! We agree with you. Thanks for watching and hope to see you back for more
I will be for sure!
Another great show guys !
Thanks!
Really enjoyed watching this.
So glad!
Great episode guys! Thank you!
Stelios K Thanks!!!
It's so interesting, and the context of 2021 and 2022, to hear Mike talking about things like DC heaters and the loop level and so on. It really was the seed to what became the Next Generation slo.
in Switzerland, they have 1,000 swiss franc bills, they are equal in value to 1,000 in u.s. currency- and reguarly in circulation.
Special thanks to unsung hero Marc Huzansky (Who’s-askin’?)…
…. and also Randy Rhoads. 😊
Thank you!!! We really appreciate it.
I really like Mike Soldano's philosophy of an all tube signal path and a solid state rectifier.
John Simms Awesome, thanks for watching
He is like THE Hi-gain Hero man lol
Just finished. So good, and no the vids aren’t too long, so much great info. Marc, any chance of getting Reinhold Bogner on?
Brent Pearcy hope so! Thank you
Another amazing hang out. I was wondering if Dave ever thought about doing an amp exchange with some of these guys. Dave building an amp for Mike and visa versa, would be super cool imho. Love the comments on the Recto and Modelers ;-)
It seems like they are already in each others heads in terms of amp design.
This is crazy- 2022 and I can watch my fave Amp Builder badasses talk tone … years ago we all figured amp builders never would be cool together. And Classic cars as well??? 😵🔥🤘🏻
Fantastic show. David Rand
Thanks!
Great show. And definitely changed my outlook on Boogie.
Interesting right?
I don't have a TV but that's ok, I have Tone Talk. Love it, Mark and Dave.
Rick Hollis Ha! Awesome! Thanks
Great episode, loved hearing all the stories. Mike is a great guy. Is it wrong my eyes kept drifting towards Mona? Maybe I watched the movie Mannequin to much. Lol
2:17:23 The truth about Mesa Rectifier blows my mind!
Yes it is interesting! Thanks for watching
Maybe interview with Randall Smith next time? :P
Subscribed!
Yea no shit, I mean I don't look at the schematics, just play them, and mesa sounds good, but not like a slo100 does.
That was like direct fresh air:
"Those bastards just basically stole it"
It's the same what happens with pedal companies like jhs(angry Charlie and Andy timmons pedal it's a knockoff of a mi crunchbox, wich is a knockoff of a Marshall guvnor)
Cool show thanks 👍
I have one of those JCA20 amps that Dave modded. Has the standard BE mod, SAT switch, effects loop, and clean channel. It's an absolute monster! I also did a few mods myself: added a choke, upgraded the OT, added a Depth control, and upgraded most of the preamp caps and resistors. Really, really cool amp. Wonder if this was the inspiration for the PT20 and Runt amps?
Soldano is joy.
SLO 100- one of the best amps ever
