Today we have a BRAND NEW course for you - The Art Of Capturing A Live Performance with Manny Nieto!
We’ve all seen and admired the legendary studios, where our favourite engineers produced the classic records which have shaped our taste in music, and remain relevant even decades after their release.
These studios often boast 100 000s, if not millions of dollars in equipment, and provide engineers, producers, and sometimes even multiple assistants for a single recording session.
While this is fantastic and convenient for everyone involved, for most of us, it simply isn’t the way we record music.
Nowadays, the majority of producers are working out of their home-studios, using a small selection of gear they’ve accumulated over the years.
Can we still produce records that sound amazing, shape music history and stand the test of time?
- Absolutely!
That’s what The Art Of Capturing A Live Performance is all about.
Inside, professional producer Manny Nieto (Distortion Felix, The Breeders, Health, Los Lobos) teaches you how to master the challenge of being the engineer, guitarist, and lead singer of your band, all at once.
In this comprehensive guide, Manny teaches you how to create a massive, analogue sounding Rock anthem, without having to spend a fortune on gear!
And for a LIMITED TIME you can get the course for OVER 50% OFF!

omnis i place in the ceiling top corners, opposite each other.
i forget they are there, but turn them on (phantom) to get room /comparison.
i usually have more than enough signal to sculpt out,
not much low end & un-focused highs, just eq mids out to blend.
@@Arsonloke thanks for sharing!
@@acimbobby tell me please!
I mixed punk band, NOFX in 1992. The drummer handed me a microphone from a Radio Shack cassette recorder (the one with a little plastic stand). It had adapters to change the 1/8” to XLR, and he said, “This is for my snare…I like the way it distorts.”
... you mean Erik 'Smelly' Sandin? smh.
It's fun how one can suddenly come across a random comment on internets and kinda meet a person who casually mentions that he has probably mixed the "Sticking In My Eye" and hilarious "Straight Edge" cover that were the pillars of my personality as a 90s kid lol
Living my dreams
That's very cool! Thanks ever so much for sharing!
Gotta know... did you end up using it in the mix?
Wow, thanks Manny for the shout-out!!! Your mic seems so cool! Cheers 🍻
Homies for life my friend! I have a UA-cam Chanel thanks to you and set up today ;) cheers my brother.
Coolest guy you've had on the channel, massively inspired by this dudes story and vibe and his gear is right up my street, really grateful for this, Mannys vibe really helps me believe in my weirdness, what a gent, thanks guys

Manny did a super sonic bang up job of recording our 2nd VAZ LP, back in 2001. The Frances Miranda analog days. Glad to see that he's still killing it, and growing...keeping an open mind.
Thanks and yes I loved that record! One of my best for sure.

Manny is my dad 😁👍
Haha Nice!
I love my Son ;)
You know how to gauge the passion of a producer? Calculate Warren's Words Spoken per min. he ask a lot of questions and talk cause you can see the passion for everything about production. The more passionate Warrans guest is the less he needs to talk cause the passion is for productio, not to hear him self talk, so anyone who can keep the conversation going, Warran will let them lead the conversation!
Manny is by far the coolest person on the planet 😎
Agreed 100%!
Thank you for the kind words!

As a fan of Black Flag and other Punk bands I know this is gonna be good even though I did not watch the full video yet
Thanks ever so much! Yes! So much great music!!
It's weird,Being in several punk bands, tours, studios throughout so many yrs to the point of just wanting to just quit. Now I'm literally producing my own music in my mini studio and man I love it.It always starts with a drum beat then guitars, bass synths then vocals and ends up in the laptop or in my Tascam 424 as complete songs.
Such an interesting chat, great content, I'd love to just hang out there for a day 😀
Thanks Alan!!
Right? I'd just listen to him talk for days

Manny has produced some of my favourite noise rock records. HELLA! Wow, this was insightful and inspiring. We need to know more info about those albums he released under an alias.
Check out one of the first records he did called “dying to meet you” by Vaz. Fantastic sounding and great songs!

Man, this quality content is top notch. Thanks s lot Warren for this incredible information and dedication. Cheers from Colombia!
PS: Favourite piece of inexpensive gear is my Sterling ST151 one of the best microphones of it's price range (just 100 bucks), great high end for the price and big low end without being boomy which is not common on that price range.
Thanks for the tip. Will add it to my list. Have a good one.
Thanks Diego! Yes, I’m a huge fan of Manny’s! Great guys and great talent!
Yes! Great tip Esteban!
This is a testimony to how great one can be with wanting to do what you love, but Manny made it happen, too cool. I'm a big fan.

Thanks ever so much Girolamo!
Great video. If you are interested in the Death By Audio Pedals watch the documentary called Goodnight Brooklyn. It is all about Oliver and his creation of that company and the DIY style of doing things.
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing!
Huge fan of their pedals and APTBS. Their shows are out of this world nuts. I think "we've come so far" has to be one of the most intense tracks in a long while
@@leefchapman yes! Amazing!
I bought 3 of those D224e's for a steal about 5 years ago.. flipped them for almost 10 times what I paid for them as their popularity started the pop.
You will see them used on BBC produced programs where a politican or someone of "importance" is talking at a lecturn.. It will have a mic foam filter on both ends, as it is dual capsule... one at the top and one down closer to where the XLR goes in..
I saw one for sale and had wind screens top and rear lol i thought maybe he was crazy but i looked at my own today and there are vents rear! a few days ago i found another AKG 224e and snagged it. 3 now...Hi Hat,Ride and guitar covered.
So VERY cool, getting a tour thru Manny’s Weapon Locker!
Such a good visit, Warren.
Thanks Kahl.

Love Manny. He was so supportive with my drumming career in LA back in the day! Johnny too. Great interview! Sick!
Manny is the best! Huge fan!
I thought I'd watch this over several days as it's the length of a feature film, but I ended up watching the whole thing. Thanks a lot, great guy, great interview
Thanks for sharing Bald Man to Bald Man ;)
I agree with TheLeon 1032.... this is the coolest guy ever. I've been recording 35 years. I wanna record with this guy! I could DEFINITELY learn some stuff from this cat. High end gear and perfect studios bore me now. It's not how expensive or "perfect" your gear or studio is, it's how badass YOU are. This cat is a badass. He does have some really cool old gear though. Different, and that makes it perfect. Creative dude. Thanks Warren, and thanks Manny!
Hi J PM, yes, Manny is truly amazing! Huge fan!

Thank you Manny...I am a second hand/ Pawn shop junkie. Used Pedals, Mics and Mixers has helped construct my studio.
Thank you for sharing! PLAP Rocks!
Never heard of this guy but damn what a legend
Appreciated the kind words ;)
As a long time Punk guy and DIY this was one of my favorite episodes … I love the hard edge production of punk records bands recording on no budget except what they earned by working day jobs .. I love these records probably more then highly produced slick high end productions mainly because that’s what the music itself dictates ….
Fantastic! Yes, Manny Rules and I love being able to showcase such amazing guys as him!
100% with you on all the above!
@@Producelikeapro Thanks Warren...love your channel and your guitar playing when you pull out a guitar
@@mannysmiclocker thank you and that China story was highly admirable of you..
I discovered Los Lobos when La Bamba came out and listened to their records. Now I can match the Sound Engineer (Practitioner) with that amazing sound. Thank you, Warren!

Shout out from Spokane Washington USA 🇺🇸 great video.
First heard him in WCA and now here, Manny just seems to be a killer guy 😁
Manny's story is so inspiring. Thank you for the video.
Thanks Tanitha!
Appreciated the kind words.
I'm about halfway through this and I've got to say it's great on many fronts. But, most importantly, I'm pretty sure it's his personality/attitude that sets him apart. He went the places that he did because of his mindset. He is almost completely open to change and actually seeks it out. Very inspiring!
It's like, yeah yeah the gear is great, but it's how and why that is important in my opinion.
Thanks Greg. Appreciated the kind words and checking out this video. Warren’s the best and was great to share.
Great video guys, found Manny here and have been busy catching up on his content.
The about making/fixing a Ribbon mic is excellent
Cheers
Thanks Mark. PLAP Rocks ,)
I played one of those 8-string vintage Hagstroms in a music shop in St. Paul, Minnesota for about two hours one time at least ten years ago...think it was under $800 and it was perfect...I've regretted passing on it ever since. Looked just like that one.
This was the coolest walk through a man's heart everRRR! Love it! Thanks Warren. Keep kickin, Manny!
Appreciated the kind words Brad.
That was a great video Warren! Packed full of tips!
Ha haaa! Yes! I had the same dream to record in China.
Let me know if any of you are ever in Beijing.
wow I am so glad I watched this video at this stage in my learning about gear. Opened my mind soo much.
Oh cool! Maybe I’ll bump into him next time I rehearse there!
Yes! Manny rules!!
Come on by Vlad ;) DTLA rules!
As someone who also still uses a PT10HD rig, its nice to see them out there still being used. I like his thoughts of putting money into other important parts of his setup like pres, amps, pedals, guitars or weird and cool mics. Love it!
Absolutely! Many of us still do!

Loved this video and interview. Great outlook on it all
I have that same Alamo amp! From like 1973. That thing is dope! First amp I ever had
Thanks. Appreciated the kind words and yes those amps rule!
Awesome!! One of the best interviews I have seen so far on this channel. Creativity is the best way! I believe it is time to steer away from perfection digital recording. Jimi Hendrix didn't have it nor did James Guthrie in 1978 doing The Wall recording. Time for musicians & engineers/producers to learn their craft again instead of digital equipment fixing their recordings and live performances. Much Appreciation for your outstanding channel!
Amen! Thanks for sharing PM ;)
Professional, passionate, articulate & open with details of what he's using and why...great video and fantastic guest. It's fun to see someone who has dedicated themselves to this level and hear how happy and nice he is. I'm going to check out some of his recordings next.
