Luke could be a weekly guest and I would tune in every single time. Thank you Rick!
The Rick and Luke show. Love it
Me too!!!
Hell yes!!!!
Absolutely!❤

In my heart, I believe that Steve Lukather is not just a guitarist; he is a transcendent force of music. As a fellow touring guitarist, I can honestly say that witnessing his artistry is nothing short of a spiritual experience. The way he caresses the strings, the exquisite vibrato that flows from his fingertips-it’s as if he breathes life into every note, weaving them seamlessly into the very fabric of the pieces he performs.
Every time he steps on stage, he doesn’t just play; he delivers a masterclass of emotion and skill that resonates deeply within the souls of his audience. I feel incredibly fortunate to have experienced his magic firsthand, and the memory of his performances lingers in my heart, a beautiful reminder of the power of music to move us all.
Thank you once again @Rick Beato, for giving us a front seat to the best interviews from the best interviewer.
Liking this thoughtful comment and noting Rick interrupts a bit in this interview - which can add to covering a lot of ground. Or sometimes it’s over excitement. 🎉
I've seen Toto twice in the last three years, and will be seeing them again in August. Lukather and his fellow musicians are world class. One of the best live bands I have ever seen, and at 60 y/o I have seen a bunch.
Steve Lukather interviews are impossible to bypass. There's no way I can't watch, whether it's 5 minutes or 5 hours long. The guy is an absolute treasure. Thank you, Rick!
This is exactly how I feel. I was already half asleep when I see Steve Lukather interview and boom! I’m up for 45 minutes just watching, learning, and laughing my ass off.
Same, it's 00:45 my time ( but I wouldn't miss it !!!) 😊
100%
Rick I am sure you won’t read this but I appreciate your work. This brought me joy on a day I really needed it. Thank you sir
Luke is the coolest most humble rockstar. He’s just a dude you wanna hang with and listen to his amazing stories. ❤me some Lukather.
He's not really a rockstar anymore. Only boomers know who he is now.
If only the "real" rockstar players of "today" were one quarter the player Luke is we'd have music people would listen to.@peterk.rosenthal1417
Humble???
@@christopherdiedrich40 Trust me. Read through the comments of Ricks last interview with Lukather. They are all saying how “humble” he is, which as you've suggested, is the complete opposite of reality. Steve Lukather either has an army of bots and fake accounts, or has the most sycophantic fans on the internet.
@@christopherdiedrich40 Knowing your own worth is not inherently arrogant.
Luke, taking the time to sit down and talk shop with Rick is an extraordinary window into the music we’ve all loved for the past 60+ years. You both are amazing. Thank you and keep the interviews and music coming!
I would love if Luke did 2 hours about his relationship with Eddie Van Halen. I know it may be hard for him but it would be fascinating
I love how genuine he is. No facade. And nice! He drops knowledge and real industry perspective for the whole video. Not to mention his incredible chops and track record. What a legend.
What a wonderful interview ❤
Nothing is more fun and listening to a guy who is a fan of music and who is a Savant himself who just happens to be the coolest guy in the room
hell when is Lukather not unfiltered? pretty sure he has no filter. and we're here for that!
His hair is the filter :)
I thought the same thing when I saw the title lol
nice how he surfed around that "the Beatles wrote all this material themselves in this short period of time" - phenomenon. Of course by now everbody who knows the tiniest bit about production and songwriting is aware that this is not possible.
A life goal is to get to that place where I truly do not give a dang and can tell stories and speak with this degree of freedom. Ha!
RIGHT?!?😂😂
I liked that Luke referred back that getting a record was an event. All of my friends had sound systems that we cranked up till the parents would yell at us to turn down. Those magical days passed way too fast. Thank you for all your hard work Rick 🙏🏼
Yeah, us older guys were lucky to experience that era of the big ass stereos that everyone seemed to want to continually upgrade. Kids , well anyone born after like 1990, have no idea of what music can and should actually sound like. Makes me kinda sad when ever I think of it 😢
When I was a kid ( EVH was my God) I read an interview with Eddie and he mentioned Lukes name and what an incredible player he was. I’d never heard of him. I went out and started buying every record I could find with his name on it. It lead me not only into new music, but I became obsessed with his playing and have followed him ever since. I could listen to him talk, sing and play all day. Thanks again Rick and Luke, we love these !!
Saw Toto again a couple of night ago and I still marvel at Luke's phrasing, groove and dynamics, as well as incredible chops. And he's a humble guy who fucks up sometimes (as he did on one song). There's a reason he was called by the greats for so many sessions. There is no one like him.
I can’t believe we get another Steve Lukather interview 🙏🙌
Rick, this is incredible. It totally changed the way I feel about Luke. Years ago, Steve did an interview with Guitar Player Magazine that came off that he was whining about Toto’s lack of success in the US as compared to their popularity in Europe. That probably wasn’t a fair assessment. With you, he was engaging, insightful, funny and gracious. This was one of the best interviews! Thank you!
Lukather IS my favorite guitar player. He's got it all.
The chops; rhythm, lead, melody, improv, the pocket !
Love what this man does !
Completely agreed!
And he sings great
Rick, this is awesome. You’re one of the rare interviewers who is a peer of your subjects. Listening to you talk to them on their level and pose thoughtful questions is what makes this special. Thank you! ❤
1978, I was 13 years old taking classical guitar lessons, then Hold the Line came out and after hearing that lead solo for the first time I immediately told the parents I wanted to replace the classical guitar with an electric and take lessons for rock music. Luke was a Huge inspiration and influence for me.
The most feared guitar of our time.
I played classical for a couple of years. It was a great foundation for electric guitar.
Its a great fucking solo
Steve Lukather is an absolute treasure. Smart, honest, respectful, humble, and absolutely one of the best and most important musicians of his era.
Seeing Steve tomorrow night in Glasgow, and Christopher Cross as support, what a treat, cant wait. Steve is not only one of the greatest guitarists but one of the greatest musician storytellers and the stories to go with it, I could listen to this man all day with those stories and listen to him play guitar all night.....a true legend in every sense of the phrase..
Wow, what a concert!
Tell us how it went!
that sounds GREAT!!!
I’ll be in Birmingham the night after, can’t wait! 🤟🏼
You might not know it, or you may- but Chris Cross is a bad man on guitar- listen to the solo at the end of Ride like the Wind, as it's fading out- that's him. Rick has done a couple breakdowns on it, I was shocked- never dreamed Chris could jam like that on guitar, and I never noticed that solo even though I love that song. It's sort of hidden in the mix and then the song starts fading out- but once you know it's there and listen closely, it's a trip. That sounds like an amazing concert man, wish I could see it.
I just have so much respect for this man. More Mr. Lukather please.
Steve Lukather as always...an excellent storyteller telling like it is!..
You don't sing into a "57" though. (58)
You can if you want
I have a Lukather story. I went to see his band in a tiny jazz club in LA...The Baked Potato, with a friend of mine who was a childhood friend of Steve's. We got to chat for a minute after the show. Steve was fresh off Ringo's All-Starr Band tour. The first thing Steve said was "Check this out.... I got Ringo's personal number in my phone! Look! I can call Ringo right now and he'll answer the phone and say Wassup Steve?! How cool is that! He's a Beatle ya know! I got a Beatle on my phone!". He was genuinely excited. It was hilarious and actually quite adorable.
Ps. The drummer was also from Ringo's band Gregg Bissonette. And he was amazing and hilarious too. Great bunch of just jammin dudes for sure
The chemistry between the two is just perfect. Both are talented, experienced and outspoken. Imagine this becoming an actual format on Rick's channel. Lukather and Rick discussing the latest news and topics of the music industry, listening to music, talking to other artists...
I can listen to Lukathers humor and stories for hours.
Humor? When was that?
I was thinking the same thing. Maybe Beato is doing a little research here?
yasss... The Rick and Luke Show... make that happen 😁
Steve Lukather is the coolest cat you have never met...
I say that with the outmost respect. Love his insight and complete chillness about his amazing life story and musical talent. Warms my heart. Thank you.
Always love hearing from Steve Lukather! Best stories in the business!
seems like a very cool guy. super talented too...
The guy is a legend. His stories are as good as his guitar playing. Absolutely love this guy. 🏴❤️👍
Fil's been doing excellent work, nice to hear him being recognized here.
Oh yea, come right to the comments to see if anyone caught it. Getting a shout out from Beato and Lukather himself... wow
@@Josh_728 I was surprised when I first saw that Rick and Ward Carroll knew each other, because I'd been watching both of their channels. Now, another one joins the list. Small world, made even smaller with YT.
Was just watching Fil's latest offering last night.
Dude, you could have Steve on here a hundred times and it's going to get you a million views. There's just nothing like this dude. All of his stories, his humor and his great guitar playing.
Saw him last year in Louisville Kentucky with Journey. Absolutely awesome.
I met Steve in 1985 when I was going to Dick Grove School of Music. Lukather is super cool in person. Cheers, James.
Man, I would not complain even once if every single Beato video was just 45 mins of talking with Luke. Dude is a musical treasure & his stories about his colleagues & his experiences are some of the most enjoyable things I ever have seen.
Brilliant convo - I’m seventy, what a privilage to have been part of this amazing cultural wave that arguably started with Hal Blaine/Tommy Tedesco and reached its apotheosis with Steely Dan’s excellent albums. As Lukather says this music was not a background to multi-tasking, it actually mattered and was the product of brilliant musicians, producers and engineers who cared passionately about the music they created...
OMG I was at that Wall show. It happened during the first song "In the Flesh". Roger said "we're gonna f--king do this right." They start over from the top. It was so funny watching the airplane go backwards. LOL
Haha. Love it.
When?
Steve Lukather Is amazing, such a lovely lovely guy . I couls listen to him talk and play for hours. Thank you both.
I started this 2 minutes after you dropped it. YOU ask the questions I'd ask, and Steve just tells the tales. Awesome.
Regardless of the topic or genre, a lot of interviewers could take lessons from Rick.
Man, I could watch any Steve Lukather interview. The stories he tells are fantastic.
Another Steve Lukather interview!?! You're too good to us, Rick. Seriously, I love listening to Steve talk about his experiences. Of course, listening to him play is always a treat too.
goodness, my name is the same as yours... but with an 'e' :)
I love everything about Rick’s interviews! All are instant classics… but there’s something about Luke and the stories that gets me every time! He’s literally like a bridge, taking us back and forth through the different musical eras, styles and making those behind the scene people, come to life!
Luke is a National Treasure. Excellent interview.
Everybody is a national treasure. Originality doesnt exist in this world anymore.
Rick Beato ask all the right question! He is the KING of asking question.. That's how you do it!
I so adore Lukather. His cool transcends era & you can feel the positive vibes he emits, through the screen. How rad is it to get to hang out with a legend? You should do an hour with Luke every so often, just because its so entertaining and interesting. I could watch you two chat for hours. Thank you Rick Beato & Steve Lukather!
This is amazing. One of the best music interviews I've ever seen. So much gold in here Rick! Thankyou Steve for imparting these experiences and insights. Love it.
“I’ll probably never get to interview Paul…”. I bet if McCartney catches wind of this he will suprise Rick. He seems like a cool down to earth guy and would enjoy the interview immensely.
I love the Beatles but honestly, McCartney sounds like a douche. All that he did after John and George passed away, and unnecessarily most of all. It's just ridiculous.
As much as I would like to see Rick interview Paul, I think it might disappoint.
Paul has been refining Beatles history for 50+ years.
His stories are polished and glowing as expected.
I would have no doubt that all potential interviewers receive a HUGE list of 'no go' areas if they don't want Paul to exit. Add the ever present NDA and it all makes for another hour of rehearsed tales.
I am a Paul fan but he's the ultimate guy at both SHOW & BIZ.
Luke's connection with Ringo could make it happen. You never know.
@@samgoforth8501 Personally, I'd be far more interested in watching Rick interview Ringo here than McCartney.
@@lucydayLucida How? We never had a proper interview with McCartney about his musical depths.
This guy not only made some of the most iconic guitar parts ever recorded, but he did it for some of the most world class artists. Incredible
I will NEVER NOT like Steve Lukather (or an interview w/ him). The man is one-of-a-kind and a true legend! Thank you both for a great interview!
Steve's musical life is just amazing and brilliant. He needs to put all the stories down for the future artist.
I’m 60 years old and I’m ecstatic about your channel because it brings me back to my childhood memories of the time and music 🎶. I was a bellman at Disney in Orlando and l was able to met Jeff Pacaro, such a nice guy 👍🏻
I’m also 60 and feel exactly the same
I think his name is Jeff Porcaro
I met him once backstage, long ago, and he talked to me for an hour like I was an old friend he hadn't seen in a while. Just a really, really nice and funny guy with zero attitude. A great memory.
I love that you got him back
The biggest living guitar legend
Rick never disappoint to be the best music interviewers ever. Because he’s not asking just for us, he genuinely wants to know also. ❤️
I'm a simple man, I see Luke, I click. Fantastic storytelling as always. Love you Luke!
Steve Lukather is friggin' Great... Thank you for having him back on your channel... He's not only inspirational but also just a wealth of practical knowledge and insights ☕🎸
I was so inspired by Steve style. At 12 yrs 1978,"Hold the line" definitely began my guitar journey. 🎸 Thanks, Rick for this amazing interview ❤
Yup. Awesome song. Never fails to light me up!
Steve showed so much class by being aware of how others might be left out. He's a flamboyant personality with a lot of character. His solo onShape of My Heart on Six String Theory was SO Beckish, by hitting THEE notes! The notes are so spiritual you cannot transcribe.
Another one!! A new interview with Uncle Luke 🤗🤗!!! 🥰 Love it! You could interview him twice a year and never have a dull conversation!!!
Great interview! HAD to watch the whole thing. But how could it NOT be great with Luke’s stories and humour, and Rick asking great questions, and then letting his guest talk. 10/10.
Lukather is an absolute joy to listen to.
There’s a question that Rick asks every interview and I love it. They find an interesting subject and he says “talk about that…” and he shuts up. Best interviewer in the business.
I could listen to Luke talk all day long. He has an endless supply of interesting stories.
One of the things I LOVE about Luke (there are about a hundred....) is he is seen with a guitar on most of the time... like nearly every time I see him he has a guitar on. That is extraordinary. He uses it as a prop and as a shield for these interviews... he's more comfortable with it on, it feels. I dunno. Its pretty neat - as a SoCal who grew up around the corner from these guys in their era, and really don't know my life without them - its always cool to see Luke just sitting, talking, with a guitar on.
The best guitar performance on a song that included Eddie Van Halen. Lukather was always years ahead of his time.
This dude, Lukather, is one of the last walking, living legends of American Rock N' Roll, period. There is nobody more experienced in the art of making Pop music than hen is. The man is aging gracefully, and I hope he's put enough money aside to live his old age comfortably. What a life!!!!
Luke is my favorite interviewee. He has the best stories and has such a nack for telling them. I love his humiltity and honesty. I could listen to him every day.
Steve is so cool and at such a sweet person. And it is so fun to listen to him. My favourite part of this video: Steve imitates Ringo Starr. Precious. 🙂
I absolutely love Luke and always have. I saw Toto for the first time live in Lafayette, LA. on their first tour. I'll never forget Girl Goodbye. That song and album made me a musician. Thanks Luke and all the Toto guys for such inspiration over the years..
Besides Luke's awesome playing and storytelling skills, the amount of inside knowledge of the music world he has is unimaginable!
Fantastic interview Rick. I could listen to Steve talk about music all night long! What an incredible guitarist and living legend he is. 👍👍🎸🎸
Old Steve is money in the bank. Great talent but incredibly down to earth. I got to see him perform on a summer evening a few years ago. Outdoors under the stars. Steve’s band and Peter Frampton and Rick Derringer. What a show! They all smiled the entire time and were clearly having a great evening just like the audience was.
Love Steve Lukather! Man, my childhood was very much like his...one person could afford the album, one person had the bomb (or not) sound system, and we all listened intently, playing each side, maybe playing one song over and over, passing the album cover around to read. It was a religion.
Great convo, guys. Steve is a treasure of a talent! (He should write a book on his life! I'd buy it for sure.)
He did write a book, it’s called “The Gospel According To Luke”. It’s awesome, if you’re a fan it’s everything you’d hope for. 👍🎸
@@ultragroove1 Thank you for letting me know!
Brings back memories of college in the !ate '70s. Candy-o by the Cars fresh copy played on the silver-faced Pioneer component stack dubbed "The Shrine" in the frat. Cranked so loud one of the wall-mounted Ohm speakers fell and damn near killed me.
I purchased the audiobook that Steve put out a few years ago The Gospel According To Luke,... Highly recommend it if you're even a remote fan of Steve Lukather.
Side note, Rick is going to surpass 5 million subs this year.
I remember when he had a couple hundred thousand.
Rick, thank you, Lukather is a hoot, hilarious and has survived the biz with grace and humor.
This is one of the most extraordinary artists of our time. ❤
Great interview! I could listen to Luke stories forever. Such a funny, humble, and immensely talented individual.
Listening to Steve's stories is always a blast, great interview!
It's always nice to see Luke happy! Excellent interview! You need to get Shannon Forrest on!
"When we used to listen to records it was an event". That was my childhood. Grateful for it. I am not stuck in the past. There's a lot of great music being made in the world today that I love. But the way we listen to music has changed. It has largely become a soundtrack. Background noise to otherwise mundane experiences. I would love that we spent more time listening to music together rather than just watching TV.
My ribs hurt...this guy has so much gold. Keep pumping him Rick!
Great interview!!!! Toto is one of two of my favorite bands along with Rush growing up. Over the years Toto is my most played bands on my radio as I drive across this great country. ( OTR truck driver). Knowing that this group played with many other great bands/ artists is impressive. The music of the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s would have not been the same without these musicians. The music and musicians don’t hold a candle to these guys or for that matter any group from our era (60s,70s, 80s) back then they were true to the art true musicians. That’s why I still listen to that era of music including country
In 2018 I saw Toto in Salt Lake City. For an extra $100 I could have met Luke through a meet and greet. I didn't do it. One of my biggest regrets. One day I will get to meet him. Love Luke! Excited to see Toto in SLC in August. Great interview.
I did that on the "40 trips" tour and it did not go down well. Maybe I was a bit (a lot) too starstruck but Luke was definitely not in (what it looks like is) his best mood. I later knew he was in intense pain from his shoulder. The rest of the band was very kind, particularly Joseph, but I doubt I will go for these kind of meet and greet stuff again, Toto or otherwise. I think they rarely meet expectations - problem being the expectations - and it was bad for me two out of two times (the other one was not with Toto). And in the end what really matters is the concert, ad that was nothing short of memorable. That you can count on with Luke aboard.
I'm a huge fan of toto, but Toto is not Toto any longer. Steve Lucas is the only remaining original member. When I saw them play with journey they changed some of their fundamental songs. I think Greg Phillinganes is an incredible keyboard player, but changing the arrangement of Toto songs is a no no for me.
He’s a legend. He knows it. And still as cool and humble as can be.
We are so fortunate to have experienced his incredible talent. Let’s hope we get lots more!
Rick,
Just want to say that In addition to being a fan of the incredible musicians you’ve interviewed, I’ve also become a fan of yours.
Best interviewer ever and a great musician as well.
Hope you get to sit with McCartney and Ringo soon.
I have the great honour of having Luke as a mate and have also played shows with him. He is an absolute sweetheart and one of the funniest and heartfelt humans I have met.. Truly one of a kind.. G
Rick, I absolutely love Steve. I could listen to him tell stories and opinions about music and everything about it for hours. Talk to him more often.
Love listening to Luke talk. Finally getting to hear him play in 3 days at Manchester UK.
68 years old and excited as a teenager to finally see TOTO.
THANK YOU, RICK, FOR HAVING STEVE ON YOUR CHANNEL AGAIN!
❤️❤️❤️
I’m in awe!!!
Rick, one interview with Steve is not enough. I could listen to him for a series of interviews! Maybe one on early studio days, evolution of 4track to 8track to digital. The refreshing approach to honest answers to your questions a truly straight talking- call it how you see it- type of guy who you just want to hang out with and shoot the breeze. Just back from seeing Toto in Birmingham and he's right, completely right that hearing live musicianship without all the latest digital flummery is just exquisite. Long may he play!
Absolutely legendary! Steve is one of the most down-to-earth, straight-shooting guys in the music biz!
What a legend. And another amazing interview. I just watched the fireaid gig and was thinking it would be amazing if you could get John Mayer on. He killed. His playing is so on point.
It’s an absolute joy to hear these conversations. Luke is a treasure of guitar and living history. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Many of the old timers( my timers!) have sadly passed. This man is priceless!! Great interview. I hope you have him back again 🤞👍
Always great to hear Steve Lukather. Can’t wait to see him and Toto tomorrow night in Glasgow! ❤
🎉
@rickbeato You're a historian of the most exceptional sort. Please keep speaking to great musicians and capturing their anecdotes and histories. What a great gift to future generations! 🙏
I went to check out the Stevie Nicks song he was talking about and all the comments down there are raving about how Prince played guitar on it. Steve Lukather may be the greatest guitarist that no non-musicians seem to know about. I remember back in the 90s I got a guitar processor with a Steve Lukather preset on it and I was like, who the hell is that? We didn't have internet back then so it was very difficult, but I did a deep dive as well as I could and realized what a fan I was without even knowing of him.
Steve Lukather, what a great guy. Skilled communicator with so many entertaining stories and lots of interesting information. More please.
Love these interviews. It's unfiltered real life behind the scene info. From a musician's standpoint, these stories are informative and funny
The great thing about Luke is, he Loves to talk...so there's never a lull or dull moment. What a treasure!
The nicest guitar hero..always a pleasure to meet
I could listen Luke talk everyday . What a cool guy with great stories and insight .
Lukather is always a great interview. He has lots of great stories and seems like a real down to earth guy.
Steve could be in a movie, an actor or a comedian his stories document music history are amazing and funny......and his contributions to music is just phenomenal.
What are you talking about? He’s rude, cuts Rick off consistently, and isn't funny at all.
@@deepzepp4176I'm glad it's not just me who thought that. He talks but doesn't listen, and never lets Rick finish what he's saying.
@ Spot on. I know, I’m glad it’s not just me either, lol. His interviews have his sycophantic fans in nearly every video comment section, saying how “humble” he is, etc. It’s very odd. He’s an insufferable interviewee.
Great channel, great guest, Rick. Loved SL’s comments on what he did with certain songs that he was asked to contribute guitar to. A little story if I may: Don’t know how much you know about South African music. I recorded my first single “November” at a small studio in Johannesburg. The producer introduced me to a then unknown bass player who had never heard my song, but asked me to play it through for him. I did so only once, with him playing along. He surprised me by telling me he’d got it. I shrugged and said “ok”, and he proceeded to put the 4+ minute song down in one take.
Needless to say I was extremely impressed, not only that he did it in one take, but what he did with it. His name? Bhakiti Khumalo, who wound up playing on Paul Simon’s Graceland. My little claim to fame. Keep up the great work Rick.
Steve never sounded better. Every word was gold. Old guys rule!
