As the story goes, George Harrison criticized Led Zep for "not doing any ballads." Page responded with this gem.

John Paul Jones played all the string and flute parts on the Mellotron on the album version which made it even more ethereal

Great reaction. The drummer was Michael Lee who started out with the Little Angels then became part of Robert Plant's solo band. Sadly he died at the age of 39 in 2008 from an epileptic seizure.

They wrote music together, so there is no telling what they might have discussed. When Zeppelin played this live, there were no strings, just John Paul Jones on Keyboards. JPJ was unbelievably talented.

JPJ played the Mellotron on most string parts on their LP's, this is my favorite version of my favorite LZ song. Stay safe Harri, Peace...

This is an old zeppelin song... Great song. Great reaction. One of the best performances of this song is the live zeppelin version from 1979 Madison Square garden concert... might be 73... anyway, Great choice.

Originally those strings aren’t in the songs, it’s all done by the 4 rock gods, Plant Page Jones & Bonham. There’s one song a woman does vocals with Plant, right now I can’t think of the songs name.

Yep. They reunited without Jonesy and named the reunion after his signature song. That never quite sat right with me but at least I got to see Page and Plant play in Hartford so I got over it.

This is a very interesting song, comparing love to the seasons of the year.
In the first verse, Robert ding of Spring. When a couple first meet. And the seeds of love first take root. When the possibilities are endless.
Next verse we have Summer. When love is in full bloom. And the world is at his most beautiful.
Finally in the third verse, we come to Winter. The hard times. (And what romance doesn’t have those?)
There is one word in this verse, I always misunderstood. “I felt the coldness of the Winter. I never thought, YOU would ever go.” Years later, if found out it was “IT would ever go.”
This one word changed the entire meaning of the song. It went from being a song about lost love, to a song about working through the hard times. “Upon us all, a little rain must fall.”
Once I got that detail straightened out, I was able to see the song in its full beauty.

Thank you Harri for this great reaction video! I love this song. I am learning to play this song on guitar and it's not the easiest song to learn! LOL.. it's absolutely gorgeous. Another version was part of the movie "The Song Remains the Same" and used to be on UA-cam as a video The Song Remains The Same/Rain Song, but I can't find it anymore. It was phenomenal.

I have only been concerned with this Page&Plant phase for around two years. Back then I listened to Pearl Jam, Linkin Park to U2. I bought the Tokyio concert from February 13, 1996, mainly because of the brilliant bluesy Tea For One (never LZ live; a tip if you're interested) and also the popular Thank You (rarely played).
Back then, both of them always had an orchestra on a few songs, sometimes great, sometimes it took getting used to, and there was also an “ethno part”/Morocco. This video comes from their first appearance together, namely MTV in 1993. I find it brave and exemplary that they tried out other interpretations in order not to be perceived as a "cheaper LZ copy".

This was a wonderful performance you should also check out Kashmier not only the string section but also an Egyptian orchestra also the battle for ever more which was the only Zep song to have female vocals on it inspired by lord of the rings from the same performance.

I think it's the song that was written because George Harrison said that Led Zeppelin didn't Write ballad. And if you listen closely, the first notes look like the song something.

Led Zeppelin changed up some after the fourth album in order to keep their sound fresh and on the leading edge of seventies music. The orchestration of "The Rain Song" is quite spectacular. Mellotronic, heh. The song taught me half dozen new chords back when I was learning how to play guitar as a kid in the late seventies.

Belle prestation musicale. In my Time of dying. Svp, ne pas me remercier. Ce n’est clairement pas mon but. Il faut juste partager au maximum les masterpeace
