    Hey ! Cute diy but rats need to climb and so they need to have vertical space

    • @RatRandomness
      @RatRandomness  6 місяців тому +3

      Rats do not need to climb as high as pet groups make out. according to studies they need at least 7 inches of height or it's harmful, and this bin is FAR over that. As are most.
      Rats are fossorial (ground dwelling). As such a cage with floor space prioritized over height is much better suited for them.
      BUT!
      Bin cages aren't always used as full time living. They make excellent quarantine, and hospital cages. And mini ones make fabulous carriers as well.
      This one is tall enough for climbing though. And can be decorated just like a regular cage.
      Climbing behavior tapers of both over the day and as rats age, but other behaviors like digging do not. So giving them what they truly need (floorspace) is ideal. While still providing options for them to choose from and then following their lead on what they like and decorating appropriately.
      But this video is more about the process of making a bin cage specifically for rats, as every other I have seen is for mice or hamsters, which have entirely different ventilation needs. It is up to the maker of the cage to figure out what is best for their animals and situation.

    Are you sure these are big enough for long term housing? It does not seem that way to me! Especially since rats need a lot of vertical space - something these bins cannot provide

      I’m thinking they mean if you do it for full term you do it with bigger stufff

      It 100% depends on what bin you use, and how many rats, and how big they are.
      The bin in this video is plenty tall enough. (Measurements are in the video near the beginning)
      My boys are currently in the exact bin in the thumbnail and you can see videos of them exploring and climbing just fine.
      Rats are not arboreal, they are fossorial. So while climbing is fun, it shouldnt be the main goal in a cage at all. studies show they need a minimum of 7 inches of height and anything smaller is going to cause harm. This bin FAR exceeds that and gives lots of space to climb and move around.
      But once again it really depends on the bin purchased. This video isnt about cage size but the process of making the bin itself since so many videos talk about hamsters and mice which have far different ventilation needs

    is a 145l okay for a 1 rat ik they need too kept in a group or 2 but I will give him soo much love

      You absolutely have to have a pair or trio of rats. There are multiple studies showing how much they suffer without rat friends.
      They get depressed, have shorter lifespans, take longer to recover from stressful events, are more prone to sickness, aggression, and even self harm.
      We cant speak their language, groom them, snuggle with them, or play with them the same way another rat can.
      I promise the rats will still bond with you if you have more than one. In fact you will likely have double the love, cuddles, kisses and memories.
      ❤️

    and it doesnt matter how big youre rats are ! you see hamsters are very tiny but need a very big tank and big wheel...

    • @RatRandomness
      @RatRandomness  Рік тому +1

      Hamsters are an entirely different animal with different caging needs. Hamsters need deeper bedding and more floors space and big wheels because of how far they explore in the wild.
      Size of rats actually does change recommendations for what size cage a rat lives in per studies.
      This is a chart from the guide for laboratory animals that shows this:
      www.urmc.rochester.edu/animal-resource/services/vivarium/rat-cage-density.aspx
      I personally choose to follow the science of rat care rather than fads and opinions. And per that info i could house a LOT more in the bin. But instead i split a happy medium and keep no more than 4 per bin.
      If the space where smaller than scientific guidelines say it WOULD be abuse. As those studies were done to see how small will actually cause harm. So if the space is larger than that the animals are absolutely not abused and fine.
      Bigger is wonderful! And theres nothing wrong with offering more space. But if within the guidelines for lab animals OR large then its far from abuse.

    I'm so sorry for the ignorant comment you get, obviously brainwashed to think that rats need the same type of cage like a squirrel ...Those other rats UA-cam channel /groups are so wrong about rats it is infuriating, THEY ARE NOT ABORRIAL!!!! You made a perfect bin cage ! 🐀🐀🤗🤗

    i think bin cages are not suitable for rats. I wouldve loved this for mice or hamsters. A rat cage is supposed to be in height 80cm and in lenght 50cm. Rats need alot of climbing i only reccomend this as a temporary cage in a vacation...this is just tiny, in my opinion this is just animal abuse...rats like tiny cage that is full of stuff they can climb on than rather have a very big cage with nothing in it but these bin cages are just too tiny and not suitable... and the stuff around the bin they can hurt there nose and paws,ears with it. I`m not trying to hate or something but this is just my opinion id rather stik with a big cage.
