Thank you for sharing! I'm planning on getting some as pets, but money is tight right now. This lets me know I can help them to have fun and recycle. Thank you :)
5 DIY Rat Toys Made from Recycled Materials Toy 1: Forage Box You'll need: A tissue or disposable glove box Empty toilet paper rolls Stuff the toilet paper rolls inside the tissue/glove box and add some food and treats! ---------- Toy 2: Forage Bag You'll need Brown paper bags Wooden clothes pins Newspaper Open up the bags and shred the newspaper. Stuff the newspaper into a bag and add food and treats. Close the bag with a clothes pin You can hang the bag with the pin on the side of the cage ---------- Toy 3: Paper ghosts You'll need: Kitchen towel (paper) or newspaper Scissors Rat safe twine (untreated jute) Cut the newspaper in half and again down the middle of 2 pages. Fold each piece of paper in half two times to make a square. Put some food/treats in the square. Cut a piece of twine and carefully fold the "ghost", then tie it with the twine. Use a longer piece of twine to make a hanging ghost. ---------- Toy 4: Egg tray/carton forager You'll need: An egg tray/carton Scissors Twine Cut the individual "pieces" of the egg carton and make a hole in the middle of each piece. Cut twine and knot it at one end. Thread the egg carton onto the twine in an alternating pattern. Tie off the other end of the twine with a loop for easy hanging. Fill it with food and treats. ---------- Toy 5: Plastic roller toy You'll need: Clean plastic containers with lids A soldering iron I used an old and cheap soldering iron that was laying around. WARNING: Do not touch the metal part of the soldering iron when it is on and hasn't cooled down yet, because it is extremely hot and you can get burned quite badly. Burn various sized holes into the plastic containers. NOTE: Make sure to do this in a well ventilated room! You can add few or many, big or small holes, but make sure they are big enough for most food and treats to fall out when it is rolled. Your rats might chew the holes bigger, this is absolutely okay. Put some food and treats in the containers.
I recommend you to be super careful on things like this. Triple check your diy toys for safety. I made a similar forage box for my Syrian hamster with treat inside. She ended up getting very stuck and practically choked herself trying so hard to get out. I am so lucky I stayed and watched her, as I had planned on going to another room to do things. I feel I saved her as she totally collapsed and I slowly brought her back.
Great ideas! I might change them a little bit so my mice can enjoy those toys :3 P.S. if anyone here has mice and wanted to make diy toys i made a video of homemade, 4diy toys! Feel free to check that out!
wish i had found this sooner! my last two girls passed away not too long ago, i was devastated. i was always trying to find new things to make for them! (check my channel if you want to see them, however note that my care then wasn’t the best, and it greatly improved towards the end of their lives, however i discontinued my channel before then.
Newspaper ink is South Africa is not toxic and won't cause any harm. I have also not noticed any transfer of ink onto my rats from newspaper and I have been using it for over 20 years.
We are planning on doing some more DIY videos. Currently everyone is a bit busy with either work or exams, but as soon as the dust settles and we get some time again we will definitely make more DIY videos.

I don't agree with using newspaper because of the ink, I look for paper where the ink does not transfer to the skin.
Newspaper ink is South Africa is not toxic and won't cause any harm. I have also not noticed any transfer of ink onto my rats from newspaper and I have been using it for over 20 years.
Newspaper Ink is usually soy based non toxic
Can u do more I'd love to make these and more there's for my ratties!
I currently have 32 destructive girls lol
