      Scratching the surface of what could be the possibilities of human-animal cooperation. I feel like if the proper research and interest were put to something like this maybe at some point we could start making progress and build functional relationships with some groups of animals so that we help each other out. I dont think many people care though

    I got my rats a few days ago and have discovered my rat Frost REALLY likes being tickled/wrestled with. I chase her with my hand and tickle her and she gets so excited she starts bouncing around and chattering like crazy while also trying to get her sister Piper to join in who is just not having it by the sound of her squeaks xD

    I have one boy who almost starved to death a few months ago. He got really sick and within days deteriorated to be basically skin and bone. I spent weeks getting him healthy and fattening him up with nutritional meals. But because of all this he's now the most food motivated rat ever. He lunges out of his hiding spot every time I come to the cage just to check for a treat, thankfully he doesn't bite though, just puts his mouth on my hand then realises I'm not food and backs off. I've mostly stopped him from this behaviour though. He and his brother know two tricks: kisses and beg.
    Kisses was to stop him biting because he needs to lick my hand when he wants a treat. And beg was originally just being taught to his brother who has a cute white belly so I could get him to stand up for a treat and then I could show people his belly. But now they both know it simply because Kiba is a glutton.. that being said watching this video made me think that I should invest more time into training Kiba. Remi isn't interested in training and every trick I teach him he does excessively even when not asked then throws a tantrum when he doesn't get a treat.

    A dog biscuit on a string works well. So too, gently tossing them on the bed. Mine would go mad with this and keep running back for more! Fluffing them with a soft floppy brush like a duster brush drives them mad too. Another one - an old towel or similar tied up to hang just touching the floor - young ones especially like to pounce on each other underneath. Remote controlled mice/rats are good and other cat toys too. There's no end to the fun you can have with them!

    What kind of places do you get your rats? I'm looking into getting one and I want to know the best places

    • @ShadowTheRat
      @ShadowTheRat  3 роки тому

      There are lots of places you can get rats, from breeders (both ethical and backyard), to rescues, to pet stores, to feeder bins, to reptile shows, and more. My rats have come to me in a variety of ways, but most have been rehomed from prior owners (due to being feeders who grew too big and kept getting rejected, or due to the owner simply not being able to care for them anymore, or due to the owner taking in a pregnant rat by accident, and so forth). I do have a few breeder girls as well, and I would definitely recommend anyone starting out with rats go that route. Make sure the breeder is ethical and breeds for temperament and health first and foremost - colors and other cool looks are nice and all, but if a rat is naturally skittish then that's going to be a far worse pet experience than a "common" looking rat that has an awesome natural temperament is is outgoing and friendly from day one.
      With all that being said the main thing you need to know about rats regardless of where you get them is that rats are very social, and so at minimum you will need a pair of same sex/altered rats. Ideally you;'d start with 3 even, as rats are naturally animals that live in large groups, plus this way if one passes early for whatever reason you aren't left scrambling to find a cagemate.
      I have a video here going into detail more about rat care if you are interested (rats have certain specific requirements other than being housed in same sex/altered groups - namely they have super sensitive respiratory systems, so they can't live in tanks, and instead they need a very well ventilated cage. The also have other care requirements like any pet when it comes to food, safe toys, enrichment (rats need loads of enrichment, and a cluttered cage as they are prey animals and so are wary of too much open space), and most importantly vet care (sadly rats are considered exotic pets, meaning many vets simply have very little idea of how to treat them. Plus exotic vets charge way less fo rat surgeries and other procedures in my experiences compared to general vets, which is another plus): ua-cam.com/video/7Azc4QOv5us/v-deo.html
      I also have a video here going over more places to find rats - there I talk in more detail about sites like craigslist, facebook, rat forums, etc., and how they can help you find breeders and rats needing homes: ua-cam.com/video/ROM0GT6IW2Y/v-deo.html
      I wish you luck with any future rats!

    What do you do when they won't hand wrestle or chase string? I have 2, 7 mnth old rats that don't seem to enjoy playing. I can cuddle them and do because I love them. Is this normal for them to not want to play? I've tried everything 🤷🏼‍♀️

    • @ShadowTheRat
      @ShadowTheRat  2 роки тому

      Each rat has their own individual preferences and personality, so your guys might just not be super into play.
      That being said, you can encourage some things like string chasing by attaching a treat or edible chew (like a cheese chew) to the end, or using something enticing like a rubber ball or cork tied to the end - then you can let the rats chase it ust a few steps before letting them steal the item, and gradually build up the chase time (this is similar to the way you can help a dog to find play more rewarding - and it works for rats as well, but depending on the rat you may need to build their motivation more or less and so it may be more or less worth it to you).
      Similarly with hand wrestling, only engaging at the beginning of free-range for a few minutes can help - this is the time rats will be more excited and active, so you can then build excitement for the activity by associating it with this time when they are excited, and gradually build to hand wrestling at other times as well.
      Of course there's no big downside to engaging in different activities they're more naturally into either - you can make them foraging toys, scatter feed treats and food, make a pea fishing area, do some trick training (fair warning, most rats take a while to build motivation for this - I adore trick training my rats, but the first few sessions do tend to be full of them just running off, until they start building motivation for the activity and start to pester you for longer sessions lol), create mazes for them, rearrange their environment for them to explore, etc., to encourage activity.
      And chilling together is also great, and if they enjoy being pet and napping on you then that's a good sign they like to be with you and enjoy engaging with you as well (just in a more relaxed manner).

    Looking to get some baby rats in the future and I've only ever had one pair of males and they were three so, other than that don't have as much experience. So are their any particular personality traits in gender (girl's more active and boys more docile, are girls more likely to be chewers) and also how young can you get a baby rat? Can you keep males together? My boys were fine but the two males my mum got had to be separated as they fought quite badly. Thanks for any replies.

    Is it ok that I have one rattie and a critter trail hamster cage? It’s definitely big enough for her and the hamster wheel it came with is big as well

    • @ShadowTheRat
      @ShadowTheRat  5 років тому +2

      Unfortunately critter trails are terrible cages for any animals, maybe they'd work for a lone male mouse but even then I find them way to small. There's no way a critter trail makes a good cage for a rat, its too small to even fit an appropriate hammock (8 by 8 inches at the least!) let alone an appropriate wheel (12 inches in diameter at minimum). Please consider upgrading your cage ASAP, an appropriate rat cage really needs to be large and full of enrichment.
      Same thing with your rat being alone, that simply isn't fair on the rat. Rats are social creatures and keeping them alone is just cruel :(
      I'd really recommend you research rats now, if you do you'll see that they aren't just pets to stick in a small cage alone.

      Shadow The Rat thank you for replying I feel terrible now😢 and not because of what I did/said it’s because you actually replied😂
      The real reason I said that was because I wanted to see if anyone would stick up for the rat or just ignore it
      It’s so good that you replied and actually cared for the rat
      I actually have 2 baby rats in a big cage (I’m not sure how big it is in measurements) with lots of hammocks hide outs ect.... and they have a big playpen with chews and ive owned rats before and my rats don’t have wheels as it can be very bad for their backs. The cage they are currently in is a double critter nation but I soon hope to get a triple one as it is massive!
      Again thanks for replying I hope that you read this

    hi! i've been wanting to ask someone this for a while, but my rat is super duper hyperactive, it tries to escape alot and run off my chair, do i need to play with it orr?

    • @ShadowTheRat
      @ShadowTheRat  7 місяців тому

      Rats are naturally very hyper, so yes, totally normal! Does your rat have a same sex buddy or few? Rats are group animals so no matter how much time you spend with them they really need same sex friends (or neutered if you want to mix sexes) - for rats the ideal group number is 3+, but even a pair is much better on them than a solo rat.
      As far as playing goes I think its a great way to bond with them, and training in particular is really amazing at challenging them mentally and physically while also tiring them out. But really any interactions that are positive for both you and the rats are good, and anything from scattering treats for them to sniff out to rearranging their environment to playing or training are going to be great!

    How do you get rats to stop pooping and peeing everywhere outside of their cage?

    • @ShadowTheRat
      @ShadowTheRat  3 роки тому

      By adding in a travel cage with bedding from their cage, or keeping the main cage door open. rats naturally want to go in the same place, so if they have the option to return to their cage or go to a travel cage with the same litter, then they will do so. But rats also have small bladders and so expecting them to wait hours to go isn't fair - so I always give them the option to go back to the cage, and if I don't give them that option then I make sure they have a chance to go first and only take them out for 30 or so minutes.

    I have a question: I'm a big adult male and I play a very light tug of war with my girls with a braided strip of T shirt. I'm just kind of concerned about possibly pulling too hard on their teeth since they only have the front ones, so they win all tug of wars very fast with little fighting, so they can get bored of it. I'm just wondering if anybody has any insight into the act of tug or war with their rats; maybe I should change to the cork and string for rougher playing?

    • @ShadowTheRat
      @ShadowTheRat  6 років тому +1

      Rats don't only have front teeth. Those ones you can see are their incisors and open rooted, meaning that they will grow their entire lives and need to be constantly trimmed down by the rat through a grinding action called bruxing. Incisors are only used for cutting stuff up, not chewing. Just like us, rats have molars as well, behind the incisors (there is a gap behind the incisors without teeth and then the molars). You can't see these but that's why rats can chew grains and other such foods without issue.
      Tug of war is fine, at most you'll inadvertently pick up the rat through their teeth and swing them around. Rats teeth are super strong (they can chew through wood, plastic, even some metals), and I've had rats hold onto a treat while I'm trying to get them off of it mid-air just because they're so determined. The only issue would be if you raised the rat too high in the air and then they lost their grip, but I don't think you'll go that high so I wouldn't worry.

    Can you bathe rats?

    • @ShadowTheRat
      @ShadowTheRat  5 років тому +2

      Yes but its not recommended. Baths can be stressful for them and strip their body of natural oils. The only time you should ever have to bathe a rat is if they get into something that they can't or shouldn't groom off, or if they smell really bad themselves. In that case filling a sink or shallow bowl with an inch or so of water and washing the rat's body with baby soap is fine, but you don't want to overdo it because this can not only stress them out but make them smell more as their body tries to compensate for the loss of oils.

    how do you stop your rats peeing everywhere?

    • @ShadowTheRat
      @ShadowTheRat  6 років тому +1

      You can't strop them from marking but in terms of normal pee/poop I find that a travel carrier filled with the same bedding as the cage usually encourages them to go there. My girls tend to go in their travel carrier when free-ranging in their playpen and if I have them on a bed/couch they'll try to hold it unless I have the carrier out (and I usually bring the carrier (the red cage) with me for that exact reason).
      If you have a heavy marker like my Shadow was you might consider just putting down an extra cover and washing it ever so often.

    • @ShadowTheRat

      How old re they? Personally I’ve started rats as young as 3.5 weeks, and the lab I helped at started them at just 3 weeks. Personally I prefer to let rats stay with mom until at least 5 weeks, and my personal youngest were feeder bin babies so not my usual circumstance. But most my rats start training around 5-6 weeks, and I really just tend to start as soon as I get them. You don’t focus on individual tricks at first, you just build focus and teach luring/targeting and clicker train them, all which help a ton when you move to tricks themselves. Then we work 5-10 simple tricks like spin, paw, come when called, jump to hand, walk on a barrel, and individual agility obstacles.
      From that point their focus will have build up to a few minutes or more and then you can start to introduce harder tricks like basketball and fetch!
      I wish you luck with training - regardless of when you start the initial learning curve can be a bit steep, but they quickly figure out what’s up and within a few sessions you really start to see their love of it take off!
      If your curious I have a video series here showing how my girls Olive and Donut starter training when I got them at 5.5 weeks - it spans until they are about 12 weeks old and you can really see them gain focus, and now both girls are over 2.5 years old and training is still their absolute favorite! ua-cam.com/video/poSvZiBMyg4/v-deo.html

    You are lucky. I love the way you take care of them. If you have the time, can you read my rat story? Well... I got them on december 2016, two females. They were 3 months when i took my rats at a pet shop. I don't wanted to buy them, i prefer rats breeding. but after a long time of giving all my free time with them they were still afraid of me... Today, it's not the same, but they don't accept hugs, don't want to play even with balls, my hands, tissue, etc... I'm really disappointed. All i can do with my rats it's to take them out of the cage and after i put them on my bed, but they really quick go down on the floor to hide in my tiny sofa. Moreover, my mother never want me i take them out of the cage because for her: rats are dirtyyyyy!!!!! (but no problems when the dog or cat go in my bedroom after an outside walk). Anw, every night i let them walk in my bedroom (secretely), i love them soooo much, even if i can't see if they love me back^^An other problem, i became allergic. Since august 2017 my nose is completely stuff. i got asthma every night, i sneeze 3 times a minutes, my eyes are burning and my skin itches when they walk after a quick time on my arms or my neck. I'm not giving them to adoption, wich is a current way when you are allergic to your rats... And i will take care of them, conceving boxes, games, little pillow for their little house etc, in spite of my health....

    Great video - your hand wrestling looks like "rat tickling" which is backed by science as a way to interact with rats to make them laugh (but it's ultrasonic so we can't hear it). Take a look at the step by step instructions on how to do it! ag.purdue.edu/ansc/gaskill/resources/ Interesting that your rats outgrew it - researchers looked only at young rats!
