I literally just made my first ever bin cage last night! I binged your videos as well as Victoria Raechel's videos so I'd know how to do it lol. Hoping to get my first little hamster in the next couple of weeks
What bin cage are you using and what are the square inches? I’ve been trying to find one for my hammy because he’s chewing on his bars! (He is in a 608 sq. inch cage with lots of things, I think a larger cage without bars will help)
@@persephoneemmert4818 where are you living if ur living in Canada or USA check Victoria Raechels vids or if ur living in the Uk check the description of this video
For US owners: I HIGHLY recommend shopping around Christmas/post Christmas sales. Target, Walmart, the container store and stores alike come out with BIG containers sold towards storing trees/Christmas things. They are perfect for bin cages with high sides and large floor space :)
I’m getting a 160 litre bin (150x50x50) it’s just under 700sq inches! So excited! He has a small Pets at Home one at the moment that they recommend it too us 😬😬it’s like 350sq inches 😭
thats not necessarily true, my hamster chews right through any hard plastic, i tried to put her in a bin cage but she chewed through in under a month, shes in a 40 gallon breeder now
@@averyshaham1697 Really? My hamsters aren't interested in chewing out at all. I can take the lid off of most of my hamsters cages and they won't even try to climb out (there isn't really much of a climb as the substrate goes quite high.
A little late to the party, but I just started my hamster care journey and I decided to use a bin cage. Totally worth it! My only gripe is that the cheapest bin I can find in my place is translucent so it is a little hard to find my hamster when she decides to sleep in her burrow. But hey, it's better than keeping her in a tiny cage or inadequate aquarium.
Thanks for this. I recently got mice to keep my dwarf hammy company. I used to leave her lid off because she would NEVER jump out of it and can't. The mice though, having reared gerbils, I know they can scale well over a foot. You introduced me to using mesh with plastic bins
A new way I have thought and am currently using to attach a lid to my diy cage is the baby proofing cupboard locks. They are easy to use without having to create any holes usually just stick on and can go round corners to hold something down enough a hamster can’t move it. My lid is to heavy for a hamster to move but I have knocked it so it want completely secure before so this gives me peace of mind that they are safe.
For UK owners, I can definitely vouch for the Asda bin, linked in the description. We got one as an upgrade for our dwarf hamster, and she's more active now than she's ever been. You can fill it with a deep layer of bedding and lots of toys - the cage even has wheels on the base, making it easy to move around. Also, it's worth watching Erin's DIY shelf for hamsters, which is so easy to make and adds another level to the bin (if you're looking for materials, Wilkos do a telescopic drying rack that works well/is cheap!)
I don't have my bin cage anymore, but when I did, I used bolts to secure the mesh to the lid! Just an alternative for those whose hamsters might like the cable ties!
I made a bin cage from two bins, and after I cut out the sides, I drilled holes in each side and connected the two bins with zip ties, then covered it in duct tape, and now I can easily pick it up and move it :) p.s. it is now around 700 square inches
Thank you! Since our hamster cage is a DIY Ikea KALLEX we are making a portable bin cage so Mr. Noodles’s can be portable. This way if there is an emergency or need someone to care for him while on holidays he has a familiar and suitable home. This way he can also come when we visit grandparents. I've changed my hamster from a normal cage to a bin cage due to its safety because he couldn't stop chewing the bars of his former cage. He's in bin cage for a couple of weeks now and definitely looks happier!

Well, a good start is to send your parent’s this video. If they still won’t buy you one, try proposing something to your parents in exchange for doing more work around the house. I’ve done this and I proposed $5 a week. They decided to give me $20 a month, which is a little less, but the amount of money I get amounts to $240 a year. $5 a week seems like a small amount of money to your parents, but start by proposing about $7 a week, which will amount to $365 a year, but say $7 a week instead of $1 per day. I hope this helps you. Good luck!
I don’t have a hamster I found this by accident and got sucked in because it struck me funny- I’m a goldfish keeper, the biggest issue goldfish owners have is they aren’t prepared for buying a proper sized tank because they have no idea about goldfish. So when the inevitable health problems start and they ask for help they have to emergency get a bigger home for the fish... so of course it’s the same plastic bins used in the video. If the plastic is safe for fish then it’s safe for anything else. If you care about your pets it doesn’t matter how it looks, you get what’s best for them or else! I’ve used these bins as brooders for chicks and hospital rooms for wild animals... great video thanks x

Aww... It's too bad that you're not reading the comments anymore! ☹️ If you did read them, I would tell you that the very first video I watched of yours was the old bin cage video...and I've been hooked ever since! I made a bin cage for my very first hamster, Nutmeg (a Chinese). It was quite the learning experience! I learned so much! Since I live in the US, I went to Walmart and got the largest bin I could find - a 50 gallon! I learned that I'm not strong enough or patient enough to use a knife to cut the windows, so I learned how to use a wood burning tool (if you're planning on using this method, make sure you're in a well ventilated area... And an adult!). I muddled my way through the project and I'm happy to say that it served Nutmeg well! It now houses Daisy (a Syrian). I just wanted to say thank you for making such excellent and entertaining content over the years! Sorry, I'm not on Twitter. 😉👍
OMGGGGGGG THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THISSSS I want to get a hamster on a budget but on Amazon’s the bins are like over $100 rollers so thank you for the links I appreciate it vary much
My personal favorite is the Sterilite 200qt stacker storage box for bin cages! more than 900 sq inches with a tightly latchable lid! Christmas tree bins are also great, but I've never found any that are transparent. :c
Another option for a bin to use that is available in many countries is the Ikea Samla bin, the 130L option has approximately 680 sq in of floor space and is only £11 (if you wish to purchase the lid clips that lock the lid they cost an additional £1)
Make sure your measuring the bin from the bottom not just the measurements the shop tells you. I think the ikea samla has more like 450 sq in, but I don't have one so I can't measure it exactly.
Hi! Human to a super hamster chewer here! She's training for the chewing Olympics and I think she has a good chance of taking the win. (On cage version 3 and counting) 😅
I made one of these just a couple weeks ago. I used a lighter to heat the box cutter blade and it worked so much better. I happened to have tin snips in the garage to cut the wire mesh which i highly recommend. I used 100+ zip ties. my hammy shall not escape!
I just got nibbles a few days ago, he's okay in the second hand store bought cage i got for him for now but I'm definitely going to upgrade to a bin cage soon so that he has tons more space to do his hamster business
I just got a detolf cage today, I currently have 2 cages (1 hamster and 1 gerbil, getting another one today bc one passed a few days ago) but I'm planning on creating a pet UA-cam channel soon and sharing a rescue, so I need another cage. And I'm planning on getting a bin cage thanks to you! 💓
A bin cage is great, but the lid can be opened half the amount for air circulation and small holes can be easily drilled along the top edge of the bin and more everywhere as long as they are smaller than the hamster’s, etc. head. The smaller holes will add greater air flow movement. I like the No cage look of bins and the incredible speed of cleaning them. Bin cages are great for viewing your pet and they will give him a spacious environment to enjoy. It’s a win win situation.
I’ve heard some people say that if the hamster finds the small ventilation holes they can still chew it until it’s large enough to escape from, so I’d keep that in mind :)
These ads are so funny!!! Erin: the minimum size requirement for a hamster cage is- Ad: The kaytee open guinea pig habitat is the best habitat on the market! It is the perfect size for a healthy pet!
The ikea samla bin is a very good option and you can get it in most countries also if your in the uk B&Q has lots of great bins from 540 square inches to 1000 square inches and are very good !

Yo thank you so much for this because I had two 350 square inch cages attached together with a tube and I thought that was okay so thank you!!!!! I shall upgrade!!
@@whyjustwhy2168 Getting them out everyday doesn't help any, they are still active at night, and need things to do in their cage, plus room to run and burrow.
i have a question about unbroken floor space. What if you've got a 600sq inch unbroken floor space, but the area has been filled hideouts placed here and there.. wouldn't that break up the floor space?
If you can’t find wire mesh I would recommend using eggcrate, it’s something that’s usually used for ceiling lights but it has sizable breathing holes and it’s pretty easy to secure to the lid, I’ve used both silicone and zipties to put it down (although both work I highly suggest zipties) and it’s also pretty cheap, last time I bought some it was like $10 at Home Depot got a big sheet that I had leftover of when I was done making my cage :]
i have a commercial cage that is like 350 sq inch i think and my hamster chews on the metal bars all night and keeps me up. So im going to switch to a bin cage, i found one that is liek 675 sq inch and i think im going with that one. im so excited
Thank you for your links to places where they sell large bins. I was able to purchase a 50 gallon bin at Target today to go with two female mice I acquired. I hope to get more females when they become available.
Hi Erin, Im getting 2 russian dwarf hamsters soon and I found a plastic box I could make into a bin cage but i was thinking if i could get two and put a tube inbetween them. The plastic box is about 700sq inch give or take a few but im just worried they wont have enough room if they just have one, Im not sure what to do.
Thank you for putting links in the desc!! I’ve been looking for a suitable bin for a bin cage but I could not find any that have enough floor space for a while, but with you links I was able to find a 640 sq inch box for cheap and the reviews say it’s durable! Thanks Edit: im going to start to look for one that is bigger and is 780 sq inch at least but still cheap before I buy anything else so if anyone has UK links to a cheap, durable, clear with a lid 780 or more sq inch storage box it would be greatly appreciated if you could link the website in the replies Also the Argos 800 sq inch in the desc would seem good but it’s a little pricey so I would like something cheaper around. £30 at most
For anyone (in the US) just coming to this video home Depot has a clear bin that's around 900 sq in floor space for $36. I use it. I'd caution to check corners frequently for chewing. My hamster diesnt but I'd bet there are some that would. I also have to keep the bedding lower than id like because I'm afraid if he reaches the top he could chew thru plastic part and zip ties but he can't reach it so it's not a problem.
Can you stack bin cages? I have a 612 square inch enclosure but it is only about 12 in high. I would like it to be mostly bedding for burrowing as my Syrian absolutely loves to build tunnels. I would like to fill one all the way with bedding and stack the second bin on top for the rest of his enclosure that has the enrichment items toys, sandbox, etc. Can I do this, and how would I keep the bottom part well ventilated? The bin cage he is in now has a completely wire mesh top and is well ventilated. I would like it to be the one that ends up on top and like I said the other one would be on the bottom and full of bedding.
Around this time of year some stores carry Christmas tree storage bins which are about the size of a detolf. They're around $30 and can be found at Walmart, Target, and hardware stores.
We love our bin cage! We have a hamster heaven, which cost us over 100 USD. We were able to get a Christmas tree bin for 10 USD which gives him over 900 sq. in. of interior space. He loves his home and we love watching him in it. We still want to give him more space, but we struggle with space in our home.
In the 90s I had a hamster with a multiple habtrail setup (the original habitrail designs) which was pretty cool. I have been thinking about getting a new hamster and I googled habitrail and was shocked to see how different their products are now. The cages are tiny! There's no way I would buy them now when a bin cage is an infinitely better idea.
Any 110 quart bin should be sufficient for any dwarf, and a 200 quart bin should be sufficient for a Syrian, in my humble opinion... Bigger is better...
I have my little hammy in a bin cage that is around 620 sq inches and ive found a cheap bin for $7 and it has over 1000 sq inches of floor space which would be AMAZING but my mom thinks its too big but I think otherwise and this helps validate that it is perfectly fine having a bigger cage.
PUT A LID ON THE BIN CAGE!!!! Hamsters are fabulous escape artists and they will get out! My hamsters escaped a few days ago (luckily we found her) but it was a close call on her life. So put a top on.
Is there anything else I can use instead of mesh??? I don’t have any and I want to make sure my hamster has great ventilation. I will be getting some soon, but better safe than sorry.
Im a newbie, one question: what do I have to do if she is chewing my plastic plateau? i removed it just to be sure, it was a standard plastic hamster cage. So its only a bin now? If that makes sense
My bin cage is perfect for my dwarf. I don’t have to worry about her squeezing through bars, and I can fill it with more bedding than I would in a wire cage. The bedding doesn’t end up on the floor either when she’s burrowing or playing wildly.
@@oceanwidder8748 Yes I did. I switched cage to the detolf later. I would say a lid is necessary with any species of hamster, she almost jumped out of the bin once. :)
So I have recently purchased a syrian hamster and he is need of a bigger cage. I bought a bin for taming but he seems to love it more then his actual cage. I was concerned about him chewing on the plastic but could I prevent that with wood chews?
We actually bought a $20 dremel when we decided to make our bin, because we didn't have the patience to mess with a utility knife or box cutter. 🤣 I didn't think about the plexiglass cutter I had JUST used for another hamster project. We totally could have used that.

Perfect timing! I'm actually about to make a bin cage, though I'm still gathering my supplies. The masking tape is a great tip!
Goodluck!
@@vievie3661 Thanks!
I don't even have a hamster. I just love Erin.
TheHamsterGuy makes great connected bin cages
Another option for a bin to use that is available in many countries is the Ikea Samla bin, the 130L option has approximately 680 sq in of floor space and is only £11 (if you wish to purchase the lid clips that lock the lid they cost an additional £1)
Make sure your measuring the bin from the bottom not just the measurements the shop tells you. I think the ikea samla has more like 450 sq in, but I don't have one so I can't measure it exactly.
I got a detolf. I dont even know why im watching this.
Imperial Drone lol! Haha but it’s good that you have such a large cage for your hammy 💕
Imperial Drone I have a bin right now . I already have the shelf to put the detof on I just gotta drive to ikea
Imperial Drone same
I got a crittertrail cage, i can relate
fjAyaz x I hope not the super small critter trails, I think there’s one that’s big enough but not the majority.
Hi! Human to a super hamster chewer here! She's training for the chewing Olympics and I think she has a good chance of taking the win. (On cage version 3 and counting) 😅
so would the 740 sq inches one be good?
I made one of these just a couple weeks ago. I used a lighter to heat the box cutter blade and it worked so much better. I happened to have tin snips in the garage to cut the wire mesh which i highly recommend. I used 100+ zip ties. my hammy shall not escape!
I just dipped my box cutter's razor blade into a boiling pot of water... Heat is the answer for easier cutting of plastic bin lids...
Thank you for the links in the description! I have never been able to find affordable bin cages of a large enough size :)
I just got nibbles a few days ago, he's okay in the second hand store bought cage i got for him for now but I'm definitely going to upgrade to a bin cage soon so that he has tons more space to do his hamster business
I never comment on videos but I don't think this could be more helpful thank you!!!
@MobileGamingGod Thankyou very much! I'm doing a bit better ♥
If you live in the uk b&q is a very good place to get very big bins , the one I got was about £12 with a lid 👍
What type of mesh should I use for this also I just found your channel and it’s helped me out a lot so thank!
I’m SO HAPPY you put links to the bins 💝
Thanks for the bin cage links as now my hamster has had an upgrade from 500 sq inches to 690 sq inches .
It’s a win win situation.
yes, exactly!
I’ve heard some people say that if the hamster finds the small ventilation holes they can still chew it until it’s large enough to escape from, so I’d keep that in mind :)
These ads are so funny!!!
Erin: the minimum size requirement for a hamster cage is-
Ad: The kaytee open guinea pig habitat is the best habitat on the market! It is the perfect size for a healthy pet!
in the uk you can also get really good ones in the range ☺️
I used a wood soldering iron to cut my bin cage's ventilation holes :)
In canada in Lindsay ontario the dollar store has a big bin that has 594 sq inches
The ikea samla bin is a very good option and you can get it in most countries also if your in the uk B&Q has lots of great bins from 540 square inches to 1000 square inches and are very good !
Thank you so much for the links. I’m from the US and they where very helpful.
Abby Johnson where are the links I can’t find them
Evie Woodward if you look at the title and then look to the right there’s an arrow pointing down so when you click the arrow and scroll down all of the links should be there.
Yo thank you so much for this because I had two 350 square inch cages attached together with a tube and I thought that was okay so thank you!!!!! I shall upgrade!!
Just got a 450 cage from a 390 I think that’s better than nothing!
I’m getting my hammy the 2nd to last bin in the UK list. He has a 350sq inch cage now and is upgrading to a 800 sq inch! 😃
Tiny and Winnie what bin did u use
Eliza Wajid go in the description box. As Tinny and Winnie said, they bought the second to last one on the U.K. list. 🙂
Mines 360 but I am getting them out everyday
Thankyou very very much ! I was wondering the correct measurements .
Thank you for your links to places where they sell large bins. I was able to purchase a 50 gallon bin at Target today to go with two female mice I acquired. I hope to get more females when they become available.
I love ur cage in the back
Hi Erin, Im getting 2 russian dwarf hamsters soon and I found a plastic box I could make into a bin cage but i was thinking if i could get two and put a tube inbetween them. The plastic box is about 700sq inch give or take a few but im just worried they wont have enough room if they just have one, Im not sure what to do.
Christmas tree boxes make awesomeeee bin cages
This was such a great video! A little project I am definitely going to do for my new buddy!
What is that measurement concerted to quarts or gallons? That's the measurement tubs are measured here
Very helpful 😄 as always a great and entertaining video!!
Thank you for putting links in the desc!! I’ve been looking for a suitable bin for a bin cage but I could not find any that have enough floor space for a while, but with you links I was able to find a 640 sq inch box for cheap and the reviews say it’s durable! Thanks
Edit: im going to start to look for one that is bigger and is 780 sq inch at least but still cheap before I buy anything else so if anyone has UK links to a cheap, durable, clear with a lid 780 or more sq inch storage box it would be greatly appreciated if you could link the website in the replies
Also the Argos 800 sq inch in the desc would seem good but it’s a little pricey so I would like something cheaper around. £30 at most
Any tips on doing this wirh a 200 qt sterilite bin? The lids are really thick, this is very tricky!!
Use a lid! My brother's friend's hamster just went up to a corner and climbed straight up with the walls as it's only support xD
What kind of sand do you use in your hamster habitats? I'm planning on making a desert themed play cage!
Genevieve Masoncup children’s play sand or non dyed and calcium free reptile sand (reptile sand is expensive tho)
@@CactusBerto thank you!!
@@genevievemasoncup5810 chinchilla sand (not dust) also works great :D
I’m one of your 95 Australian viewers!!!
Thank you for the links took me forever to try and find one
I have my little hammy in a bin cage that is around 620 sq inches and ive found a cheap bin for $7 and it has over 1000 sq inches of floor space which would be AMAZING but my mom thinks its too big but I think otherwise and this helps validate that it is perfectly fine having a bigger cage.
Space is tight so is 570 better? I'll upgrade when i have the space just wanted to know if its better the my old 220
The ikea Samla bin is a very good option and you can get in most countries
PUT A LID ON THE BIN CAGE!!!! Hamsters are fabulous escape artists and they will get out! My hamsters escaped a few days ago (luckily we found her) but it was a close call on her life. So put a top on.
Headsup that the UK homebase link is in fact an argos link
Is there anything else I can use instead of mesh??? I don’t have any and I want to make sure my hamster has great ventilation. I will be getting some soon, but better safe than sorry.
AHHHH! How did I miss this? This is so helpful!
The bedding doesn’t end up on the floor either when she’s burrowing or playing wildly.
i know i’m late but do you use a lid for the bin? i just got a dwarf hamster and i’m upgrading to a bin cage!
@@oceanwidder8748 Yes I did. I switched cage to the detolf later. I would say a lid is necessary with any species of hamster, she almost jumped out of the bin once. :)
Idk that mine was destructive so my hamster chewed out she was missing for a week but I found her and got her a 55 gallon tank 😂
So I have recently purchased a syrian hamster and he is need of a bigger cage. I bought a bin for taming but he seems to love it more then his actual cage. I was concerned about him chewing on the plastic but could I prevent that with wood chews?
Would you say that coconut fibre is a good substrate for a hamster
We actually bought a $20 dremel when we decided to make our bin, because we didn't have the patience to mess with a utility knife or box cutter. 🤣 I didn't think about the plexiglass cutter I had JUST used for another hamster project. We totally could have used that.
Amanda Hyre I got the $50 one. Best investment. I can use it to customize little wooden signs for my hammy!
When I made my first bin cage, we didn’t have a dremel (sp?). Wire cutters, however, work surprisingly well!😂
Just as a suggestion there is also the 138l KAze storage box by B&Q for anyone libing in the uk
