Does anyone else think that setting up and redecorating rats cages is super fun? I get almost more excited than my rats when I bring home new toys for them lol
Megan e OH MY GOSH YASSS I love changing up my rats cage when I clean I just finished recognizing there cage but it’s very tiring because I’m only 11 and BOY AM I SHORT the whole time I’m cleaning the top part of my rats cage I’m on my tippy toes 😂 I get REALLY excited when they get new toys! They hardly ever play with them tho 😅
I actually bought the kind of pvc pipes that are used for sewer systems, as they cost a fraction of the tunnels you can buy. Also, I replaced wodden bridges and ladders with branches from a pear tree we took down recently, in different sizes. And I make foraging toys out of toiletpaper rolls, rat safe tissue paper and left over fleece. And ropes I braid myself from fleece leftovers aswell, inspired by Ems ropes in the mice cage. Just to give a few budget friendly alternatives. In my country, accesories for rats are insanely expensive, and I have a low income.. So gotta be creative ;)
I know what you mean, I was looking for ropes everywhere, but they cost, like, 20 pounds at least, here where I live. Probably 40 for a cool rope like the one on the video. And it's really a lot of money here too.
love this!!! i'm trying to find cheap alternatives to get the cage ready since my babies are coming to my house in less than a month and these ideas were great!! thanks
You’ve helped me so much with my mischief! From motivation to getting them, to spending exorbitant amount on critter nation size cage to make sure they had the best cage I could physically find
"i really recommend getting a sputnik or 2 if your cage is big enough" no, this is trick, don't fall for it, you buy 1, then "oh i can fit in another" then "oh but this one is blue it looks cool" and you fall down the rabbit hole until "fuck i have 12 but oh my gosh they have a limited edition metallic silver and bubblegum pink I MUST HAVE IT" Sputnik is an addiction.
Rats are really lovely creatures. They make you laugh at some of their antics such as helping them selves too your cornflakes while you are still eating them.
About to get my first 2 rats next week. Figuring I'll record it too and share what it's like for a first time rattie owner lol love your videos! Picked up a lot of the things you mentioned, especially the space pod.
I’m so glad I found your channel! I’ve cared for many ratties in my life and I’m always trying to do more research and make my rats lives even better. I recently picked up a little baby boy and he will, no doubt, be enjoying some of these items!
Also a great option for hanging tunnels: use the legs from old pairs of pants (especially if you have kids who stained or grew out of their clothes). They make inexpensive, natural tunnels you can hang with large safety pins or shower curtain rings. Decorating a cage and making it fun doesn’t have to be expensive!
I’m getting rats on the 23RD and I’m so excited, I got a second hand double tall critter nation on Facebook for 80$, I’m so exited to meet my new ratties
Thanks for putting the links to the accessories for the cage. I’m getting rats after lockdown, and I am putting together the items and money needed for my rats :)
I sew my own rat hammocks and one of the ones I made was a combination of a few of these items. It's a tunnel hammock and it's fairly long with a flat top, so it works as a bridge too. As for tunnels, another option is 2.5 inch or 3 inch diameter PVC pipe. It doesn't crinkle, but they're sturdy enough to survive a lot of chewing. I have a T-shaped one in each of my rats' cages that I bury partway in their bedding.
Just ordered a single Critter Nation! Still a ways off before I actually buy any rats as I have to get bedding and lots of toys and hammocks but a big part of my decision is from watching your series. Thanks for all the help!
The sputnik is an absolute favourite for my boys. Although I did have to drill a couple holes in the bottom, because they kept peeing in it and then sleeping in the pee
im getting rats on monday and your videos have been super helpful. with out your videos i would have only gotten one and you made me aware that 2 will be much better. thanks a lot!
My rat is extremely frightened by the trixie blue extandable tunnel, I once tried to slowly push him into it, and he freaked out as if I was trying to feed him to a snake LOL. I put some treats inside though so he slowly starts going deeper inside of it to fetch for snacks. Hopefully it'll get him used to it.
Getting my first rat soon from a friend! His last cage mate recently passed and my friend is pregnant so she doesn’t have time/money for any more rat friends - he’ll be my first rat and after he’s settled in his new home I’ll be getting him a cage mate ofc! (Don’t want him to be super stressed with a new home + new rat since he’s already normally pretty submissive and nervous, so I’m trying things slow - if this isn’t a good idea for this situation someone let me know! I wanna do good by them ; c ; )
I can’t find the tunnels in Australia all I can find is: mice tunnels, guinna pig tunnels and rabbit tunnels🐁❤️ Edit:do you think I could use one of these?
Yes. From what I have learned, rats can use (almost) everything that other small animals use (EXCEPT RUNNING WHEELS). Rats just aren’t super common pets so, there’s not a lot of things made specifically for them. So yeah. Hope that makes sense.
Hi! (: I wanted to ask what you think about these stand perches, these sticks you can put on bars (for birds), just like the lava ledges, but these are of course more narrow but seem to have a similar texture on them. I only ask because lava ledges are not very cheap, and these are less than half its price. What do you think could the rats use these as well for climbing? Or is it too narrow for them?
Finding your video after my kids brought home babies from a reptile show is a life saver! Love how informative they are and how much information you provide! (Apparently my 6 year old has her big brother wrapped around her pinky and she couldn’t leave the 2 boy babies behind) 😅🤷🏻♀️ we own Guinea pigs so I figured it wasn’t too big a deal to have baby rats 😂
I have a kind of parrot rope for my ratcage, but it's a bit wobbly and my rats don't like using it at all. They don't sell lava ledges here. I do use those brown aquarium rocks for in the litter trays. They sit on it and do their pooing then. For cheap litter trays I can recommend kitchen drawer divider trays. They come in various sizes (Curver brand) and you can cut one or two sides off with for instance strong pliers or a bread knife. And they're a lot cheaper than £10 shop litter trays for rats. They also don't have any good foraging toys here. I know I can make some with toilet rolls or something. Or use that treat ball thing with the tiny carrots on it. But that's a bit of work for the rats to get their daily ration of food out of. I do do some scatter feeding on top of their various flower pots and on top of their wooden cabin. You maybe forgot one toy item. Strips of kitchen paper towels 😉 Oh yeah, and cheap kitchen baskets with strips of paper in it, attached to the side of the cage.
I made a diy foraging toy. I hung 6 toiletpaperrolls in their cage and stuffed them with unbleached papier and some treats. Cool for if you are low in money or cant find anything at the store. I couldnt go to the store until next weekend so i solved it like this. They really like it!
Was going to say this! Dollar store leashes can be wrapped and clipped around the cage to create any type of bridge or web you can imagine. For $1 a piece they e really been an incredible staple for my boys :)
They could just not like hammocks in general or maybe they don’t like the specific one you’ve bought them. Maybe they’d like a different style (1,2 or 3 decker hammocks) maybe they want a bigger hammock.
A cutie little rex needed rehomed in my area, I'm picking him up in a few days and wanna be prepared. I plan on getting another male rat very soon after for comfort for him but all the other rats the person was trying to rehome were female and my new lil rex isn't neutered so yeah no lol.

I'm super excited and now have a HUGEEEE cage that's even bigger than yours!😁 I'm so happy but yeah I'm doing my research and hopefully soon I will have enough money for my ratiess!!!!!
Hammocks don’t have to be fancy, since rats chew them anyway. Old bedding or clothing can make great hammocks, and pillowcases or pillow shams have the benefit of being both large and already having a pouch to hide in. Just poke holes in the corners, put in some shower clips and you’re set! Also instead of lava ledges, I use rough bricks under their bottles and they work great to trim the nails. These are all great items, but the rats don’t care if things are store bought - they love nesting in cardboard boxes with torn up tissues as much as fancy, expensive items.

That or any other pet store, you might need to visit a few. There's 4 pet shops in my town (Europe) and the smallest, most obscure pet shop happened to be the only one that had a couple sputniks. Ebay and Amazon also has them 24/7 but constantly they sell out due to popularity.
Can you do a diy rat toy video? Pet stores have a limited stock for small pets. And you seem to know what meterials are safe to use. I saw this diy house that useshot glue. Hot glue is toxic. But i would love to see stuff they can climb on, hide in or play with
I have been thinking about getting rats for about a year now. one thing I'm very concerned about is that I have two cats and a dog. I will keep the bedroom door shut at ALL times so my cats and dog will most likely never see my rats. My rats are too lazy for those foraging toys but when I get their new cage I will try them. I can always suggest cat toys- I was told that it would help them learn to roll them around. If you are a light sleeper I suggest not to do it. The cheap balls with different textures are great.
