For Eevee: You have to put the gradient into the info node and then you have to connect the gradient Fac to an object info node. That's it, you have your random particle colors in eevee! (For 2.9 users)

@@UP2Z Just tested this, and you somewhat saved me from my struggle. I just have one problem with this method: The color change. When I tried this with my particle simulation, the particles didn't change color the way I wanted them to. I'm not sure how to explain it, but the colors are half-and-half on each side of the simulation. They don't change color as if it were a gradient. Any tips?
Absolutely love this. Can't believe a single image took only 4 seconds to render, im definitely going to be doing a bunch of animations with particle systems, thanks a lot. +1sub.
@@harv3yquinn531 yes it did, I used quite little samples, just enough to make the depth of field look good and the particle count was 69000 but the amount of particles barely made a difference in render times. I think it took such a short time to render is because light doesn't bounce off of objects which have the emmision shader so the samples count can literally be 1 (I think) but of course that's not including depth of field which requires more, but it still didn't make a big difference. I also used Linux, which makes renders about 20%-40% shorter compared to windows.
I can't really get this working, can you elaborate on this a bit? I'm just looking for any way to fade out particles smoothly instead of having them just disappear.

Double check that your math node is set to divide and also that you are in cycles. You could also check your handles on the color ramp node. If you have 1 handle all the way to one side you might only see 1 color. Try moving them around and see what happens. I hope this helps!

I was not able to get the final render done properly. I don't know but for some reason the particles weren't leaving the sphere. I baked whole animation and did a final render and it worked.
I had roughly the same pb : rendering stopped after the first frame. Impossible to know why but after baking the particles system, I was able to render it correctly.
thanks, I'm having some issues with the colors. I only can see the first color. I cannot set the two colors. am I doing something wrong ? I already tried to change the Material Output shader for the cycles but is still not working
theres and option in the particle settings tab, goto the render tab, then click the checkmark saying show emmiter, it may still show it in the viewport previeiw, but in the render it should bbe gone

@Blender Made Easy How do you manage to select the particle ico and emitter ico separately? I follow the tutorial as close as possible but no matter what the particles and emitter are always selected together when I click. Meaning I can't click on the emitter without selecting every particle too.
The particles are attached to the emitter so whenever you select the emitter icosphere it will also select the particles. You can hide the particles by going over to the modifier tab and clicking on that screen button. If you are trying to change the material of the particles you need to select the particle ico sphere that we created at 1:20. Does that answer your question?
@@BlenderMadeEasy Last question! at 4:37, how do you have the icosphere highlighted without every particle turning orange too? They remain white while the emitter is selected. This is only an issue when I got to add colour in the second window later on, as the emitter turns completely black/blue whichever colour i have selected for the particles.

This is months old but if someone comes across this problem make sure you applied the material to the Icosphere that is being used for the particle system and not the sphere that is the particle system emitter

When you add in an object you need to go to that panel right away. If you do anything else it will disappear. So add in the icosphere and before you click on anything you should see that panel.

I tried to set higher values of particle life and number of frames (up to 1000) but unsuccessfully; I also tried to set the shortest possible interval (inside the color ramp), between the color of particles at their "birth" and the color at their "death", but... nothing happens! The funny thing is that I tried another method that consists in linking the particle color to the x, y or z position of the particle, and that works. thanks but not really none of this works for me as the settings you give do not give me a swirl as the flow of 4 dont do anything they are still coming out straight and the colors on the icosphere are still only white but yours is not the only one I tried all the others and they dont work too . but thanks for trying maybe someday it will happen
Hello! Your tutorials are extremely helpful. I wanted to ask if there's a way to color the particles based on their position (either distance from origin, or say, distance from z-axis). This would be beyond helpful in scientific simulations. It'd be even greater if there's a way to color these particles based on some calculated quantity (say, particle's momentum or energy) via the python console
I have nothing rendering I ticked and unticked the show emitter and nothing ever happened. The colors are working, I have it under render object, I feel my sanity leaving me
I made 8 airplanes in Blender i put them in particle system,emition. When i press play its look like they realy fly,but how can i change the speed of them,everyone fly in same speed..Looks un natural
If you have already rendered on all the frames then yes. But if you are just doing 1 frame you don't have to. Make sure you have the viewer node enabled in the compositor then go to the UV Image Editor. Type in the search bar Viewer and you should see that pop up.

The render was only one colour until I checked the Material Output shader and changed to 'Cycles' instead of 'all' - hope this helps someone

To achieve kind of a similar effect in Eevee, try using the position node of the geometry input instead :)

Who needs expensive AE particle addons which are running basically in 2D, when u can do all this stuff for free in Blender in real 3D.

you also could add a map range node after the division node to control the range and color ramp better for shorter or longer lasting particles :)
Or combine the two, mapping the ranges makes the values easier to work with in a grad map.

Are you using Eevee? The Particle info node does not work in Eevee. Make sure you are using Cycles instead.
there is no option like shader in or particle info in the newest version..can you help with it

I've been doing udemy lessons for blender....and this tutorial feels like cheat day lol.

Particle info in Eevee is incomplete. I guess they haven't gotten to that node yet. We'll probably see it in a later version of Blender 2.80.

Make sure you are in cycles. Eevee does not support the particle info node.

Check what rendering engine you are on. I think eevee is the default so change it to cycles
