    Thanks for the review, Steve. ^_^ Been seeing folks mention various Android handheld gaming devices for a little bit now, and it's making me more and more tempted to grab one myself. The racing games that you showed looked really nice on the JXD!

      TheGebs24 Thanks Gemma :)
      I wouldn't call the buttons unsteady. It's that the travel on them is a little too long, from top to bottom. It takes just a few milliseconds too long to press them down. Sounds silly, but it makes them feel a little off.

    Amazing review!! I've been looking for an indepth review of this for a few hours and clicked on this video half expecting a user who "Ummm" or "errrms" his way through a curse filled, unfunny video review. I'm so glad I was wrong! Loved the way you managed to get across the facts about the console as well as your passion for gaming. You have a new subscriber! :D

      Adam Warren Thanks, I'm glad you liked it :D
      The attitude and humour is pretty consistent throughout most of my videos, but the subject matter... it's mostly retro gameplays at the moment, with the odd review of retro hardware. Hope it's still your cup of tea :)

      *****
      I just came back to rewatch this video and noticed you replied. Sorry for the late reply!
      Well, after watching this video the first time i headed to your uploads and
      watched quite a few. Spent most of that night working my way through your older console reviews like the amstrad, commodore and Sinclair lol bought back a lot of memories! As i said in my first comment it was nice to find a reviewer/youtuber who got across the facts clearly while still making the videos enjoyable and funny and was glad to see the rest of your videos had the same feel to them!
      I'm still on the wall about this and have a quick question (if you dont mind).
      Currently looking for somthing to fill up 4 hour coach journeys. Im after a
      tablet that can play videos flawlessly and of course Mega drive and Arcade
      (MAME) roms. While i'm more than convinced about this tablets ability to
      emulate the games I am worried about the video playback side of things. You say in the video the quality of the video playback is silky smooth. Did you notice any stuttering/jerkiness at all? I recently bought and sent back a Galaxy s4 due to the laggy U.I and the slightly laggy video playback.
      Sorry for typos. im typing from a touch phone at work. :)

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  9 років тому

      I'm glad you're enjoying my other vids. Thanks!
      Regarding videos - I've only watched the demo video that came bundled with the device (an mp4), and I noticed no stuttering on that. I can't say how good it would be playing other videos in other formats.
      If I have a concern about this thing for your intended purpose, it's the battery life. After further use, I've found the life varies wildly, depending on what it's used for. So while simple 8 bit emulators could probably be played for several hours, the Dreamcast or PSP emulators will drain it in about 2 hours flat.
      I don't know about video.... I guess it would depend on the format and resolution.

    Excellent review Steve!
    I do think this device represents the 1st one that ticks pretty much most of the boxes of what you want with a portable gaming device. I have tried a few of the different tablets both Android and iOS and have never really been comfortable with playing the arcade style games I want to play on them.
    I have used the GCW Zero a fair bit since I got it, so that will probably fill the void for me for the moment, but the much larger screen and higher processing capacity of a device such as this I can see being an attractive upgrade at some stage in the future.

    • @SteveBenway

      I see things like the JXD, WikiPad and NVidia Shield as opening up a whole new sector of the market. It's something that's seemed fairly obvious to many of us for quite a time, so to my mind, they've been quite slow off the mark, but I do think this is the beginning of something. Sony, MS and Nintendo should pay close attention.

    That key mapping system is brilliant! i was just thinking about how good it would be to just tell it what control you wanted to use to replace the onscreen controls, what a fantastic idea.
    All in all this thing seems great, i'm not really sold on tablets or all in one emulation jobbies to be honest but this thing seems genuinely solid i can't really fault it from what you've shown.
    Basically it comes down to what you want, if you want a portable emulation device then this thing seems to finally do the job properly in a sea of devices that just aren't quite right in one way or another, however i just can't justify £130 for it personally, thanks for the review though Steve, good to see your thoughts on it and an honest straight forward review

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  9 років тому

      ReplayRetro As a dedicated gaming device, this thing is to the 3DS and Vita what an Amiga was to the Mega Drive and SNES. It's rough around the edges and lacks the triple A games, but it's an open system with massive potential to just mess around with unusual or unexpected "things"... and the ability to do much more than play games. Certainly not everyone's cup of tea, but to me... it's a breath of fresh air :)

    Nice to hear you enjoying yourself with this tablet, unlike some of its cheaper wannabe knock-offs. I got one myself about a month ago 2nd-hand, but haven't done anything with it so far apart from testing. Like you, I was impressed from the off, by the quality box. Heavy card, rather than a flimsy cereal box! And nice foam inner packaging too. I'd heard that Android wasn't the ideal platform for emulating systems; if it's true, then this is the exception to the rule.

  • @SelfIndulgentGamer
    @SelfIndulgentGamer 9 років тому

    I love this stuff, i'm sure I have some kind of emulation addiction! one key thing for me about this system is the price, its so dam cheap imo. Now if it ran the Amiga flawlessly I might have to get one :) only just watching the vid so you might have covered it.

  • @riotfate9548

    just got mine some days ago (thanks to your review, among the other opinions around the net). Amazingly, i didn't have any relevant complain, this thing is amazing. good looking and solid, never have a crash or lag, play everything and the controls are good. ok. the d-pad can give some difficult on diagonals movement but is just matter of habit (in fact even if i heard about some problems for special moves in the fighting games my success rate of a basic hadoken is the same as my PS3 pad).
    I believe some people badmouthing this thing just for their personal ego and support over famous brand, because i didn't have a SHIELD but for the emulation stuffs i think is pretty much the same. For 130-146$ with free deliever (depending from where you buy it) is an absolute bargain.
    the only thing annoy me a bit, is the battery display. The console never charge over 99% and the indicator can first show 76%, then i turn it off and reboot and then the battery jumps to 81% . Anyway the duration of the battery seems alwais right, if you don't mind the indicator :) Maybe could try to update the firmware.
    In the end, great review, great console and ones of the best 146$ i spent ever :)

      I don't know if those people were unlucky, or if I've been lucky, but I've had no problem with mine. Having said that, the battery turns out to not last as long as I initially thought, and it does get quite hot when the cpu is under heavy load.

  • @mikkdc

    This looks bloody brilliant. Ive been using emulators that allow me to use wii motes to control the games on my tablet. I too prefer emulators that allow you to make them look like they're running through an RF lead. I think this thing could be something I purchase after Christmas.

    Hi, I have just discovered your channel. This device is great, other than battery-wise and once you get a decent rom running on it, that is. I have plenty of android consoles, and I think you would like to try the JXD s5800. It is probably the best android console out there. Basically a 5" version of this, slightly less powerful but with much better firmware and battery life, plus is technically a phone and features bluetooth.

    Can confirm that this is a good buy. Got it a few months ago, will play everything up to PSP (can play PSP but have to mess with settings) depending on good emulators. It doesn't play Gamecube and PS2 games very well. If you do have problems change the emulator your using, and where you get your roms from. 99% of problems I have with emulators always comes from the software of the emulator itself. The screen is good with good quality, and the DS emulator that comes with the unit is the best I've come across on Android.

    Funny I have come back to mine recently, I had put an alternate ROM Android ROM on it ( KitKat custom firmware by Lujji ) which was good but the Dpad and in built controls was not functioning the same so I went back to the alternate firmware I ran previously (KitKat Stock ROM by Pogodancer) which I am really enjoying. I also downloaded a video that demonstrates clearly how to dismantle the unit as I hope to replace the battery someday should it ever be required, I want to keep it going.

    For Friday
    Hi Steve, last week you told a few stories of rough experiences you had in the pub and it reminded me that back in the 80’s quite a few video arcades were pretty sketchy places, at least where I lived in Canada. Do you have any bad stories of experiences or people you encountered in an arcade?
    I reminisce about the arcades back in the day assuming they were clean, kid-friendly places but in reality the ones I went to were often full of drug dealers and punks more interested in taking your spare cash than playing any of the machines.
    It’s ironic how we view our gaming past through rose tinted spectacles.

      It does get warm if you play some of the higher end emulators for an extended period, though the most noticeable aspect of that is not how it feels, but the smell of hot plastic. It never misbehaved on me though, so while it initially surprised me, it's caused no problems.

    But can it run Crysis? :-P
    Seriously, though... it looks like it does an awesome job at emulating many different systems. But two things I'd be annoyed by are 4:3 aspect ratio games being stretched out to fill the 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio (on some games that's completely acceptable, but on others it distorts the image too much), and the on-screen touch controls remaining visible even when you're not using them.

    • @MaximumRD
      @MaximumRD 9 років тому

      ***** oh it does the job for sure and most should be perfectly happy with it, I am just one who loves to tinker, JXD and other Chinese ANDROID device makers tend to offer a bare minimum stock standard ROM, thankfully a few good guys (you can find them on the Dingoo website) take interest in these devices and do a great job making available optimized versions that tend to strip the useless stuff, pre-rooted with better choices of stock apps. I have tried about 3, all better then stock but the one I mentioned in last comment I have stuck with to this day. If you feel adventurous and / or have any issue in future be sure to consider it, IT CAN BE FRUSTRATING / FIDDLY getting the alternate ROM on there, not for everyone for sure, just depends what you are into. as for the hardware, I've no complaint for the price, great resolution screen, decent enough camera and GREAT emulator response, PS1 ones GREAT, Dreamcast can run pretty good even. Also I agree, ANDROID is my mobile Os of choice.

I'm not annoyed that I bought it instead of the JXD as I think you are spot on by saying it should be used for gaming primarily and perhaps if you HAVE to use the apps or Web, it's there as a handy feature. Very Good review, pretty much spot on, only thing I think is that you talked up the battery life a bit much. I would say, if using emulators, make sure you have the charger with you, as it will only last 2-3 hours, the battery meter is also erratic IMO. Still enjoyed the vid and have subscribed.

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  9 років тому +1

      wearecity1970 I agree with you about the battery life. I'd not had the thing as long as I'd have liked when I made the video, but had a deadline to keep. The battery life seems to vary wildly, depending on what you're running, so while some emulators will last ages, the PSP or Deamcast will kill it on no time.

    • @wearecity1970
      @wearecity1970 9 років тому

      ***** Yes agree, it does vary and it's always difficult to review such items, within a strict time limit. Devices like this, need a good few weeks and months of playing, to get the best out of it and to see any issues. It's always nice to see an update to reviews like this and I see in the comments you have giving your thoughts after a few months usage and I agree about the internal storage set up, which is my other annoyance with the device, although again not a deal breaker.

    How exciting being asked to review! Brilliant little system, and gaming too. So much around that doesn't get mentioned around the usual traps. There's so much more "out there". Annoys me actually that the usual stuff gets bandied about instead of alternatives.
    Steve, when it says it'll play PS1 games, how does that work? Downloadable? I have a lot here but they're disks. Are the games you've shown here already on the tablet? Little steep in price though: $AUD263.76 + $AUD56.42 shipping.

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  9 років тому

      None of the games I showed were on it out of the box, nor any of the emulators... though there are one click icons to install lots of them if you don't care to pick your own. PS1 games... it plays ISOs, downloaded from the interwebs. You can either find them yourself, or get them from that "Happy Chick" app that I mentioned.

    If you haven't tried it, you should check out the GPD XD. It's pretty similar in specs, but jammed into a New 3DS XL form factor. Nicely portable, great battery life (6000mah), fantastic screen that looks great from any angle, and pretty decent controls. The d-pad is middle of the road in feel, but in practice works just fine. It feels a bit like a DS Lite d-pad, but is far more responsive. Sticks are slightly touchy, but you get used to it. The shoulder buttons are microswitches, and are responsive and nicely clicky.
    It won't stop me from collecting systems, though. NGPC on the way, and then probably a Wonderswan Color. I'd love a Turbo Express (PC Engine GT for many parts of the world), but it's out of my price range at the moment.

    Steve, in America here the chatter is that you can "upgrade" the firmware, I had a horrid experience with the Linux based A1000 series from JXD which is fantastic by the way, which involved an update that should have been better but I believe it took the firmware back a year or so instead. I had to send it back after asking JXD personally if they would just send me a copy of the 10.xx.xx firmware that was originally packaged, they denied because I ordered from Amazon and not their website... "Weird concept for supporting your own product". I've ordered the s7800b and the s5110b for my lady since we're both hardcore retro gamers and I myself am a huge collective type like you I have systems galore, and as we choose to protect what we own we use emulation over using the disc or cartridge. JXD's s7800b interface is amazing, pretty much puts all my other "gophers" in the drawer, and I'd like to know if you would even consider doing a so called "upgrade" in the first place. I'm traditionally an apple user, I can and do "upgrade" but with such devices like this I see no reason to go that far, (why fix something that's not broken, that's what I've been told) the only feedback I've seen that bothers me are these so called compatibility issues with the Google play store, any feedback you can provide concerning this?

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  9 років тому

      I've no plans to upgrade the firmware. I know there are alternatives available, which are supposed to be an improvement on standard, but as I find this original firmware just fine, I see no reason to do it.
      Also, on the occasions that I've upgraded Android devices in the past, even with official upgrades, I've always felt the device was slower and more clunky afterwards.

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  9 років тому

      I don't know. There are many games, and I haven't played most of them. Pressing the little controller button should just bring up the keymapping config graphics, and pressing it again should make it go away. If you have brought up a control graphic that is specific to a game, you will probably need to go into the settings of that game, and look for an option to hide on-screen controls. I can't be more specific than that I'm afraid.

    I saw on your app screen that you had the MAME emulator installed (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) and was wondering how well it plays - Specifically games from the "golden age" of arcade gaming, the 80's (Pacman, Donkey Kong, Defender, Robotron, Ms. Pacman, etc). How well does it work?
    Thanks for the review!

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  9 років тому

      There are two versions of mame for Android... mame4all and mame4droid. The first plays older games, and the 2nd, slightly newer games. Neither play the latest romsets, so finding roms that run on them is tricky, to say the least. When you do find games that'll run on them though, they play very well. Out Run on mame4droid is impressive.
      I plan on doing a video showing all of the emulators I have installed on this thing, with some gameplay footage from each one.

    • @SteveBenway

      My first suggestion is to go into android settings and turn on HDMI output. This is just a simple tick box. If that doesn't work, try some different screen resolutions. If you still have no joy, I'd try using a different HDMI cable, and then a different TV, each with different screen resolutions.
