      so i presume the best this device can do is emulate sega dc,but there's rumour's bout the jxd s192 able to emulate ps3 and xbox 360,wonder if its the real deal.

      Highly unlikely. Android isn't even up to emulating PS2 yet.

    Awesome review: You really covered a lot of ground there! Im surprised at how smooth DS emulation was. On the PSP Space Invaders Extreme was screwed up forever on my Nvidia Shield: I'm so grabbing that now that it works. That's one of my favorite games too. As far as the charging bug I have never run into it myself: I wonder if there's a firmware version that corrects it although flashing the XD can get a little dodgy. All in all this is my favorite handheld right now -- kind of wish I opted for a 64GB model though.

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  8 років тому +1

      I'm not brave enough to flash the thing even if they do come up with a fix.
      I can't imagine how much stuff you've got in yours if you're wishing for the 64GB model. A 128GB SD card works wonders. Full romsets for PC Engine, Mega Drive, Master System, SNES and Mame, a load of PS1, NDS, Dreamcast etc, the complete 4 series of Blakes 7 on video, and it's not even half full :D

    • @Retr0Rob
      @Retr0Rob 8 років тому

      Yeah, It's the Android native stuff that sucks up most of the room. I dump my ROM's etc to 32 GB micro SD (gotta pick up a 64 one of these days). I hear rumors that a Marshmallow release is right on the horizon for XD: Then we can combine the internal and external space into one glorious whole... That probably does not read that well ;).

      @RedBullAddict-_- 8 років тому +1

      rob if u get 128gb card an get the app 'app2sd' and the paid one u can move the obb file to sd card as gpd xd is already rooted worked wonders for me

    This is by far the best review for the GPD. I've had mines for 6 months and it never occurred to me to create the layout that you have. So simplistic and organized. I use happy chick for my gaming. Question...when you deleted happy chick did you reformat the entire OS or just delete this app? Thank you!!!

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  7 років тому

      I just deleted Happy Chick. Not the most secure thing to do, but I've had no issues. It's probably just paranoia on my part anyway :)

    I think that little software addition that allows you to map the company tools is genius. normally you gave to have root for something like that (which I hope you can do)

    Really is a fantastic device, I've started using it for most of my retro footage these days. I've had the same problem where it doesn't come back on and in most cases leaving it for a few minutes then trying to switch it back on seemed to sort it.

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  8 років тому +1

      Good to know there are options when it bugs out like that. It had me worried.

  • @mamemeister
    @mamemeister 8 років тому +1

    Steve, a couple of things to be aware of. I've found if I've let it drain completely down it can sometimes take a while to power back up and start charging so probably worth keeping charging it before it empties completely. Second thing ive read is to never charge it whilst its completely switch off as you can apparently brick it. Its not something thats happened to me fortunately but i have read it on a few sites so i just always ensure its turned on whilst charging.

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  8 років тому

      I've read similar things, though they've always been uncertain what the exact cause of the bricking was. Charging was always a factor. Leaving it turned on sounds like a good idea.

      Android Wars ahoy. The latest JXD which has merged brands with Shield by the looks of things so techniquely both a new JXD and a new Shield Vs a new up and comer at a fraction of the price with almost the same power but maybe not as good graphics the GPD.
      I think in this new playground wars the android saga there might be a surprise overall winner during this years generation of them in the cheaper underdog of the GPD as this gen JXD tried too hard bringing power at a not as afforable price compared to old school JXD by merging with Shield an expensive brand.

    Great review. I tried Daytona USA on Xbox live myself and you are right about the controls being less than average. It's a much more enjoyable experience to play that game on an original arcade cab.

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  8 років тому +1

      I think arcade is the only really acceptable version in terms of good handling. It's playable on PS3, fun, and such, but not what I'd call good handling.

      Yup, it's frigging expensive though! £259. But I was always a UMPC fan before Ipad and windows tablets killed them off. This is a comeback for pocket PC's! Give me that over an Ipad all day long.

    Great indepth review and thanks for showing the sticks, wasn't sure if they were nubs like on the 3DS (which I can't stand) but glad to see these look quite nice. Think you've just gone and sold me on this!

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  8 років тому +1

      I'm not keen on nubs either. These sticks are very nice.... as are the main face buttons. L1 and R1 are okay too, though I don't care for L2 and R2.

    According to Joe from GameSack, pushing the thumbstick upwards and then steering like that works better for Daytona as it emulates a steering wheel better.

  • @SkyDivedParcel

    Hi - you mentioned you had trouble mapping gear shifts on the Sega arcade driving games - was driving me mad, but I eventually worked out how to do it:
    You can change the input controls for Super Monaco Grand Prix in Mamedroid as follows:
    You need "on screen controls" on
    Towards the top right there is a button "Start" - press it
    Select "input (this game)"
    You can then select inputs for "shift up" "shift down" the peddle 1 and peddle 2 inputs cover acceleration and steering respectively
    You may have already worked this out, but I thought I'd share for everyone else!!

    Got one just before Christmas, its light and handy and powerful but I found myself going back to the JXD as I preferred the larger screen on that device.

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  8 років тому

      The bigger screen on the JXD is certainly easier on the eyes, but the overall size, weight, and lack of battery life put me off using it much.

    • @TeamVVV
      @TeamVVV 8 років тому +1

      That's interesting, I've found the JXD has been good with battery life, though I haven't compared it to the GPD. Maybe it depends what game / emulator you run but the GPD is so much lighter and more portable.

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  8 років тому

      My JXD lasts around 6 hours playing stuff like Mega Drive games, or Shadowgun, but Mupen64, Reicast and PPSSPP utterly hammer it.

    • @wrestletube1
      @wrestletube1 7 років тому

      This gens JXD looks pretty pricy as they have merged with Shield to make the new beast but this GPD is almost the same power of it anyway.
      But if in JXD you trust then you can't go wrong with a JXD with more battery time, an NVidia graphics card and a processor and ram setup along the lines of this GPD but at probably triple the cost.

    Pretty sweet piece of kit. They have a Windows version too and I've heard it's phenomenal. It's the true spiritual successor to emulation machines from the mid-to-late 2000's like the GP2X, PSP, and Dingoo.
    Really a bummer you can't really get the same results from a phone with a Bluetooth controller due to poor software support.
    Phones have great potential for gaming, but that potential is squandered by barely-existent quality control and poor controls.

    I want one, but I may wait for the next generation. Still on the fence. I wish the screen could rotate so I could play Android Ikaruga. I keep hoping.... IMPORTANT QUESTION: How is the d-pad? Sorry if you said it and I missed it! Thanks for taking the time to show this.

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  8 років тому

      I'm rather kicking myself for forgetting to mention what the controls are like to use. They're lovely.... all of them (almost). D-pad, sticks, buttons... lovely. Everything except L2/R2 (and maybe L3/R3), which are a bit too awkwardly positioned.

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  8 років тому

      I'd have agreed, except it keeps glitching while playing Mario Kart.

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  8 років тому

      I tried the latest version available on the Android Play Store. It was fine most of the time, but every 30 seconds or so, it would glitch for a fraction of a second. That's enough to make me opt for a different emulator.

    • @SteveBenway

    I believe you press F5 to get to the menu screen on Metal Slug to turn on the blood. The arcade machines had it off as standard.

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  8 років тому

      Finding F5 is tricky without a keyboard. I've not managed to get to the mame menu system on this thing. I did it on my phone, but can't find it on this.

    Sega CD, SNES, PSX emulators also work really well on this device. I played Snatcher on it earlier in the year on Sega CD emulator and it was great to experience it on the small screen. Earthbound plays well too.

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  8 років тому

      MD EMU plays Mega CD very nicely, though finding ISOs that run on it isn't proving so easy. I have a few that it doesn't like at all, and none seem to play the music.

    This looks very good! As does your footage. Top notch stuff! Had I the extra cash sitting around I would definitely consider one of these. I keep thinking about getting a Vita but then I look at all the games that I might possibly want for it... and it ends up being a bust, every time. Plus I still have some PSP games to finish playing... I should get on that soon...

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  8 років тому +1

      I've looked at the Vita many times too, and always come to the same conclusion. The games just don't appeal to me. It's a pity, as it's obviously very good hardware.

    I too was fooled and thought it was a New 3DS XL Dual Stick after seeing your preview pic the other day Steve. Ended up being a weird Droid with the same form factor in the end and the panel even looks like they blocked off a 2nd 3DS screen with the square in the middle it looked that much like a New 3DS. Thats one cool Droid item. lol.

    Really bloody tempted to get one of these, just a bit sceptical about the bricking scare you mention at the end. Hmm, gonna do some more research. Have you had any issues since then of a similar manner?

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  7 років тому

      I had a similar incident. Left it turned on in for several days without charging, so the battery ran flat. I charged it, and got the black screen on bootup again. Tried turning it off and on again with the charger plugged in. No joy. Unplugged it and left it a while, fearing the worst. Tried again after a couple of hours, and it fired up first time. Since then, I've never let it run flat, and never turned it off.

    I've run PPSSPP on a 2.4Ghz, dual-core system and most games run at full speed. In fact the only one I remember slowing down was Spider-Man 3 which starts out in a burning building. Once you get past that and into the rest of the game, it seemed to run at full speed. The Burnout games also ran great.
    My experience with PPSSPP is that it seems to run about 70% of the games (that I've tried) perfectly, about 25% of the games don't run, or crash when you try to start them, and maybe 5% run, but with problems (graphical glitches, etc).

    Ive had mine since launch and its superb. I bought it to replace the ageing psp and to run amiga emulation on a handheld which psp never really managed. I recently used mine on a 9hr flight from the UK to Florida only downside is the GPD XD is not capable of 50hz for pal users.

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  8 років тому

      Does the lack of a PAL mode matter? Most modern TVs, or anything that you plug in via HDMI should be able to accommodate it.

    Nice review Steve, I might have to sell the JXD now :)

    • @wrestletube1
      @wrestletube1 7 років тому

      Yeah, GPD is like the new JXD but for us with a not so big budget.
      It has the 2ghz processor and the 2gb RAM but doesn't have the NVidea graphics which pumped up the new JXD's price as it's basiclly the Shield 3 as it looks like with the cash from the old JXD and they brought out a stake in Shield to make the new JXD.
      With almost the same power and most of the difference being in it's graphics card is it really worth buying this years JXD over the GPD probably not.
      It's great that a new breed of playground wars has started though the android wars.

    Raicast at least looks playable now when it started the project only ran in slow motion on most games so it's impressive they now have some speed in the emulator and some games are actually playable due to it.
    Of course I would love to see Null DC, Demul or Chankast ect. running as they are made for full speed in mind but I'm not sure if Droids are powerful enough to handle them yet but if one can handle Project 64 now why the hell not have a try I say getting a real full speed one ported and running on the Droid.

    Hehehe I was Umming and rrrrr'ing about one of these a while back. Didnt pull the rigger, but I am on the lookout for a handheld for when Im away. I love tablets and Android but I hate mobile games and no controls.

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  8 років тому

      I'm with you all the way. Touch screen controls are just plain rubbish.
      This thing is great, though not perfect.
      I find myself frustrated with the control recognition by some emulators, and can't decide if it's the fault of the emulators, the gamepad, or if I've set something up wrong.
      The slight lack of cpu power is also a little frustrating. It can almost, but not quite, play Sega Saturn games. My phone, which is a last generation LG G4 can run them (but obviously has no physical controls), so that this thing can't, just shows its age.
      They're working on an XD2, which I would expect will have more power. Should be interesting.
      None of which should really take away from how great this thing is. It just shows what a picky git I am, and that I'm never happy... lol :D

    • @SimplyAustins
      @SimplyAustins 8 років тому

      nothing wrong with being picky hehehe. Yeah I got a S7 Edge and can run anything thrown at it. Some place in China sent me a Android controller and to be honest it great. But its just not right. Even when I attach the Phone to the cntroller it just feels wrong? Would much rather an all in 1 unit like this.
      A nice option that may solve some of your controls is using RetroArch. It has a unified controller setup which can be a great thing, but in some cases a curse with systems that had crazy controllers.
      But with that you can run PSP, DC, SNES, MD, GB, MS, MAME, NES, GBA, GBC, SATRN, N64 etc etc all of the same setup.
      Love the look of that thing though, very tempted just for the ease of use thing. Whats the battery like on it?

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  8 років тому

      I've tried and given up with RetroArch on this thing. It's a pain, but works on my phone. On the GPD, it falls down at the first menu screen. It doesn't respond correctly to the keypad or the touch-screen, so you can't get through the menu systems to set it up.

    • @SimplyAustins
      @SimplyAustins 8 років тому

      ah yes :( Its a pain to configure without the GUI on android :( Shame, but its still a great setup for many systems on there with the emus you got. RA also just made their emulator web based too able to run through DropBox for games... the emulation world just getting crazy! hehehee

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  8 років тому

      I tried SNES9x, and it worked well, mostly, but every 30 seconds or so, the screen would glitch for a fraction of a second on Mario Kart, and that was a deal breaker for me.

    • @MrSegAsh
      @MrSegAsh 8 років тому

      You sure Steve? Im using Snes9x EX+ 1.5.34 on my Nvidia Shield and I have just played through the Star Cup and not one bit of glitch can be seen. I too seek perfection when playing my old skool games and hate when something doesn't quite run OK. Shame the Dolphin emulator hasn't come on as well for Android as it has on the Windows platform.

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  8 років тому

      Am I sure that snes9x EX is glitching when playing Mario Kart?
      Unless my eyes have suddenly developed a glitchy flicker every 30 seconds or so, that only afflicts them when playing Mario Kart while using snes9x EX on a GPD XD, and only appears within the confines of the screen.... then yes... I'm pretty sure.

    All things considered this sounds very good indeed. I quite like the 3DS like clam shell design.
    Seems to be quite fast, some of the emulators obviously need a bit more work, but it definitely seems to run quite a lot well.
    It is a pity that PSP emulation is not perfect for GT (as it's one of my most played games on the PSP).
    It's amazing how far these devices have come along now, may consider getting one of these.

    Steve, you may wish to try a custom rom for your XD over at Dingoonity. Skelton, who is well known for his very excellent custom firmware's, has made a few ROMS for the XD than have proven to take this already well done system to the next level.
    Here's the link; boards.dingoonity.org/gpd-android-devices/(rom)-legacyrom-kitkat-for-gpd-xd/
    As you are not having any performance issues, the standard 1.6ghz rom will likely be your best bet. One of the good things about these roms is that they fix the power problem that gave you a bit of a fright.
    There is also one that has the new Mali GPU drivers. This really is only useful if you use the HDMI a lot and have a 4k TV. The new driver fixes a few problems with the output sync and makes the picture much more smooth.
    GPD's are generally difficult to "hard-brick" and if anything goes wrong you can still use Rockchip's flash to recover. Give one of them a try if only to fix the power-up issue.
    My only two complaints is the screen size, it's too small. Would liked to have been 6 or 6.5". The other is the lack of a keyboard. I wish all my device had a slide-away or compact type KB. The XD could have fit a blackberry style KB in the empty space on the center quite easily. I love my S7800B still, but have graduated to GPD's Q9-PSV. Similar specs as the XD[CPU/GPU/RAM] but with a 7" screen. But this little thing is, as you said, brilliant and well built.
    Love your vids, keep them coming!
    PS, whoever got the XD as a gift for deserves a big, heartfelt hug/kiss.

    I don't know why the default control system in MAME is the 2 button ones far more games use the 4 & 6 button modes. I guess the Metal Slug game was an exception of a 2 only button Neo game so you were able to play it even with the bad for it 2 button mode on as it used those buttons in the game.

    I've had mine for 6 months or so on the strength of Mamemeister's review. It's great BUT just be wary of where you get it from. Mine has developed a fault with the battery (doesn't say it's charging when plugged in and the battery drains within a couple of days even if off) and the seller isn't being particularly helpful about getting it repaired. I think I've just been unlucky with my unit so I would actually still recommend the machine - fingers crossed it gets sorted soon...

      I had a similar problem with my JXD and then the touch screen died after about 3 months. A lot of these devices need to be sent back to the manufacturer for repair. Lots of sob stories online of the Chinese company asking you to pay the cost of shipping repaired units back from China, then the item never comes back and the company stop responding to emails. I never sent mine back in the end and now it's completely dead. They look nice but I think the build quality is dubious at best. I wouldn't buy another dedicated android gaming device unless it came with a UK supported warranty or guarantee. Less risky buying a decent android tablet and a good controller.

    it's a hardware bug with the screen and charging... if you leave it like that for hours you can get all kinds of funky effects on the screen. it's probably a race condition of some sort in the hardware I think - I figure all the power that is supposed to go to the battery probably goes to the screen instead, or something like that...

  • @wrestletube1

    That SNES one would be alright and nice with the pictures if it wasn't all on the one dash board and kept the letter folders. I guess it would also be nice and slick if you could like an Everdrive or ripoff cycle to the next letter with a shoulder button which would make sence for this formatting.
    SNES9X.emu Beta is all I need to use for a decent one though. It's a free beta build of a normally paid final build which is a less high build compared to the beta and it keeps my folders like a normal emulator so worth it's great cost of free.

    I'm more a Project 64 guy over a MUPEN guy on the PC because of the higher compatability and less screen tear and now it seems we are getting both on the Droid yay so it's pick your poisen once the first final one comes out as a 1st beta is always limited extras although carry on betas from the 1st final version always have the features so I don't mind going beta if it's free on a later build past the first final but at the moment since it's only 1st beta it's a limited features thing so would only go MUPEN currently until the 1st final or the beta after the 1st final but thats just me even though I'm a P64 fan for it's emulation quality.

I would like you opinion because I travel a lot and would like to play my retro games with a controller but also use the device for internet browsing and other stuff you can do with tablets. Can you do that with the GPD XD?
    Would love to hear you opinion.

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  8 років тому +1

      I have a tablet (and phone) which I occasionally hook up to an iPegga controller. I vastly prefer the GPD as a solution, as it takes less space, is more comfortable to hold in terms of weight distribution, and doesn't require me to keep an eye on two separate batteries (one for the phone and another for the controller). I charge my phone battery every night, but the number of times I tried to hook up my iPegga, and found the battery was dead.... very inconvenient.
      The GPD will browse the internet and do everything a normal android tablet will do. What it doesn't have is cellular connectivity like a phone does, but as long as you have a wifi connection, it's just as functional as a tablet, though perhaps more awkward to use for that, due to its physical orientation.

    2GB RAM is the amount in your average Linux installed computer and was until a few years ago the amount of RAM in your Windows Vista and 7 computers and Quad Core processing was also a new but great thing for computers during the period.
    It's funny how a little mother chip board Android is starting to get as powerful as an 8 year old Windows PC already.
    Soon enough they are going to go full blown current maximum 16GB of RAM and Octo Core processors and probably be even used as mini PC's to replace your Lap/Desktops because they are starting to get the power already with Octo Core being trailed in the latest phones now and RAM already starting to go up to the PC standards.
    Virtual Reality is also kickstarting requiring these pimped up PC power specs over time in these little devices sooner rather than later to make the alternative reality look as real as possible so I can see Octo Core and 16GB RAM really becoming a reality and having a tiny thing like that being just as powerful than a Windows 10 Desktop in fact there would be a Windows and IOS version of these things too as they work on the same chips really.
    I can see it right now Microsoft Word on 16GB Octo Core Android being the normal even for the kids homeworks taking out half off the requirements for new school computers because only the people who didn't buy the droid have to use the desktop because they will also have clip on keyboards big and small for your droid no matter if it's a smaller gaming tablet or a massive full size one these 2 in one computers are goign to be the future once they get as powerful as the Desktops which some Windows and IOS ones already are other than the Octo Core and 16GB RAM default installed in the Droids and alt 2 in 1s not being around yet.
    I do think little things like this might be the future of computing and maybe even gaming if Playstation 5 takes a tablet form factor and plugs into the TV and uses it's own SD Card ripoff for the psyical pre recorded games and also has an SD card slot for backing up data for the the store download games and a big hard drive for the store games themselves.
    VITA did it wrong because from the start they didn't make it the PS4 and they didn't make it more powerful than PS3. With 1TB SD Cards coming out though they can use the tech for the protected ripoff slot and it stores more than a 50GB Blu Ray so more powerful games than the PS3 & 4 can be put on a ripoff data card formally known as a cartridge in our days that large.
    No CD Scratching or getting stick in the draw or the Playstation overheating into a death mode. Playstation 5 with it's own 1TB card based games with the option of using 1TB SD card for the game save data storage for DLC and updates as well as videos and audios you can watch and a hobebrew scence that can run on SD Cards without interfering with the PS5 games side as they can't be played on SD format of course unless it's a DLC update and even then it's only the data and not the full game on DLC on the SD so there wouldn't be any illegal stuff happening unless someone hacks it.

    Hi. Probably a basic question but do you know which emulator the preinstalled games are using / downloaded with? Are they downloaded through the emulators that are preinstalled (happy chick, gamebox?). Also, is there a way to completely hide the on screen buttons when playin. Games downloaded via happy chick? I use the Japanese labelled buttons to make them smaller and dim them right down but can't get them to not show at all. Do you know if there's any way to do this? Cheers

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  7 років тому

      Happy Chick can be used to download both emulators and roms. I don't know which emulators it installs. To be honest, I know very little about Happy Chick or any of the preinstalled software, as the first thing I did when I got my GPD was remove all of the preinstalled stuff.
      Some emulators will allow you to remove on-screen controls, some won't. How this can be done depends on the emulator you're using, but if it's possible, it should show up somewhere in the settings.
      Sorry to be so vague, but without looking over your shoulder at your GPD, these aren't really questions I can answer.

    The analog sticks are actually the same ones that are used in the PSVita. The shoulder buttons are perhaps a little awkward. The quality is really good if you ask me.
    I have the exact same JXD device and I found it too big myself as well. And the quality of the buttons is not as good. The screen is big but it goes through the batteries like crazy. The GPD-XD has excellent battery life. I get 6-10 hours depending on what I do with it.

      Thanks for the reply but when you say it kicks the arse are you just talking about the graphic quality of the screen or are you talking about game selections because you mentioned 100 000 games for the jxd and remember that you have a thing for nintendo 3dxl so naturally you have a bias towards the gpd xd being similar to the 3dxl which better graphics screen resolution of course. Can you give me more specifics as to why you like the gpd q9 better. And you made a video about the top consoles and the jxd 7800 was in your hooliday bunch and a finalist in that list without mentiotning the gpd xd anyways can you give me specifics. I wish you had the gpd q9 i would know for sure i just want to buy the jxd already i know you probably want me to get the gpd xd but i want the bigger jxd screen at a cost of some screen graphic not so important if it can run all the emulations i want. I want to do hacks etc with the jxd so i want to put different operating systems and different firmware on it like liunx etc or maybe two never tried partiioning a game pad hardrive if its even possible. Anyways what are your specific reasons for liking the gpd xd better >? and what software emulator or pc etc can it run that the jxd cannot?

      by the way i saw a gpd q9 vs gpd xd and its basically the same thing minus the smaller screen for the xd but better screen resolution for the xd so based on that alone the gpd q9 would be the better choice so it comes down to the reasons /specifics you think its better than the jxd, the xd that is

    • @codusoperatus2003
      @codusoperatus2003 7 років тому

      i just saw your review for the gpd xd and noticed that you say its the battery issue with the jxd and also the warming but i dont really care about that as much unless im i have to keep buying battereis a lot for what i need. I thought it came with a plug that i can plug it in a use it while its plugged but i guess not thats a downer. I noticed you think based on your experience from using it that the games play better i think its the screen looks better and the processor is better but yeat maybe the emulators are also good who knows but so far i don't know i just love the way the jxd looks and i guess it comes down to if i can get over the gpd look the q9 compared to the jxd but yea i still would like to get all three eventually and then either keep all three or sell 2 and keep the one that is my favorite.

      The GPD XD has better performance that the JXD S7800b. They run pretty much the same operating system, so can run the same software. The GPD just runs it better. It also has better battery life and feels to be of a better build quality. To my mind, the only advantage the JXD has over the GPD is screen size... if you like a big screen.

      It doesn't really need a video. It all depends on your phone, because if it doesn't have the necessary sensors, the right option won't even appear in the menus.
      From the front screen press 'Options', which should give a new menu from which you select 'Settings'.
      From here select 'Input'.
      Next click 'Tilt Controller'.
      From here, there will be, if your phone has gyros, a tick box for 'Tilt Sensor'. Tick it.
      Then further down the menu tick the boxes marked 'Tilt as analogue' and 'Touch anywhere'.
      That's all there is to it.

    A nice little fact too about the great .emu range.
    C64.EMU, GBA.EMU, MD.EMU, NES.EMU & SNES9X.emu are all freeware on the guys website if you don't mind Beta builds which I don't on emulation since they end up being bug fixed rather than bug riddled if it's emulation of course if it's any other software I would pay for a stable version but emulation it's nicer to get it for free on beta I feel as it's more up to date and if anytthing has less bugs due to the nature of emulation and later builds making improvements to emulation.
    On my phone I got a couple of them free latest builds beccause why the hell not it's more up to date than the paid version and I don't have to pa a thing as it's a nice freebe.

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  7 років тому

      Tricky question as it depends on what's more important to you.
      Each does somethings better than the other. GPD XD is cheaper and generally easier to use, all of the emulators that work on it run in full screen mode by, and it'll emulate 3DO.
      The WIN is more powerful and so can emulate Game Cube and is more effective for running mame. On the other hand, some emulators will only run in a window, and it can't emulate 3DO, and the whole thing is more fiddly.
      At the end of the day, you need to take that information and make your own choice based on what matters to you.

    Impressive that it could run dreamcast emulator!

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  8 років тому

      Yes. I think it's as much a testament to how well designed the Dreamcast is, as it is of the skill of Reicast's programmer(s).
      It's probably less to do with the power of the GPD XD, as my phone can emulate Sega Saturn effectively, while the GPD can't.

      I was waiting for the GPD XD 2 but the GPD Win has taken priority. Probably won't see the the XD 2 until at least early next year :(

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  8 років тому +1

      That Win thing does look impressive. An XD 2 sounds like a good thing too. The XD impresses the hell out of me, but it's not up to emulating the Saturn, where my last gen phone does it quite nicely, so there's clearly room for more power.

      I'm not used to importing electronics from China. How likely is it to be stung for VAT etc? Is it just luck or is it more or less 100% of the time?

    is the gpd xd games already accesible easily, or do i have to search and install.

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  7 років тому +1

      Depends how you use it. It comes with Happy Chick preinstalled, which while it requires the installation of games, makes doing it very easy. I don't use that myself, and just use the Android Play Store to get the emulators, and then get the roms from the web using my PC, and transfer them across manually. It seems very easy to me, but different people have different levels of experience with computers and Android devices.

      Yes, it works, but I'm a fairly cautious/paranoid kind of person, and I simply don't trust it in terms of security.
      I've no evidence that it's doing anything naughty (to the user), but when it has built in file sharing, the whole purpose of which is to break international copyright laws... do I trust that they wouldn't acquire information that they weren't authorised to, from end users?
      That, and I'd rather use software that I've chosen myself, so removing it frees up storage space.
