    I swear to god when it comes to retro gaming when you absolutely need a raspberry pi 1 or 2 it's so sick I mean the fact that you're able to play retro games on a raspberry pi is sickly amazing it's like a must have

    Good to see you are getting into Linux and the Raspberry Pi. I have quite the collection of Raspberry Pi's now, such useful little computers. It is rather amazing how advanced technology is so cheap these days.

    That's ok mate! I found it by chance during my tea break mouse clicking so it's nice to know my random meanderings on Twitter resulted in you sharing the love on here.
    I've yet to do anything with mine yet, but I think retro-pi seems to be one of the best uses for it without digging into hardware build projects. Nice to see how it runs a lot of these games as I had no idea before I viewed this video.
    Excellent video Steve!

    Thanks for this video, I had downloaded retropie myself, and was disappointed to find it only had a fraction of the promised emulators on it - not being bothered to read the documentation I abandoned it, but your info about the systems only being shown once you have added some roms for that system has restored my confidence to give it another try! Thanks!

      "not being bothered to read the documentation" - well we spent a lot of time writing it, so it would be worth while at least to go through the first installation which tells you the basics... github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/First-Installation

    Got myself a B+ and tried using it as a desktop but and was impressed but I was really sad that I couldn't open many tabs or watch videos on the browser since it usually takes 100% of the CPU which kinda bothers me so when the Pi 2 released I grabbed one and it instantly blew me away! The speed has very much improved and it doesn't take that much power of the CPU compared to the B+. The Pi 2 is a really great choice if you really are in a tight budget or just need a simple computer. I use Raspbian and it has come a long way since it first got released. It's now on Jessie and I must say the OS now is very pleasant to use. Another good thing about the Raspberry Pi is probably all of them(including the Zero) is pretty much powerful enough to run LibreOffice(a office suite for linux) smoothly although one of the most obvious difference is probably the loading time. And now we got a new Raspberry Pi which is faster than the first Pi released. The Zero in my eyes would be really great to use as a cool little emulation system for the living room or even get this hooked up to cheap little monitors for your kids or schools that are financially poor.And it's really amazing how they got a full computer that is priced only 5$!In my country(I live in south east asia) After converting 5$ I can probably get a Mcdonald meal for 2. I really love how the Raspberry Pi foundation has found a way to make their latest product cheap and affordable. I know this is a very long comment but I just want to release my inner geek out. Yup, I may be young but I love how technology is getting cheaper! Btw, love this video on the Raspberry Pi Zero, please make more regarding the Raspberry Pi! No matter what project you make I'll gladly watch it! And no, your Raspberry Pi B isn't useless! There's so many uses you can do with them! Just do some research and something would probably catch your eye! Also Steve, I have a question about Retropie. How do you quit a game in Retropie? I can't figure anything out so I just turn the power switch off and on it back.

      ***** It was very much in the style of popping round to a mate's house to see his latest toy. Some tutorial videos on YT are hard work. Especially those with no commentary, some awful music, and done in such high res you would struggle to see what is happening on 60 4k screen. I think most of us can cope we just need a look see to provide some direction,

    I found Recal Box to work much better on the Zero. It's less hassle to setup and I actually got better performance with it. Plus it has more emulator options as standard and it just feels less janky overall.
    **EDIT
    After doing further experimentation, I've gotten RetroPie to perform even better than recal box on the zero but you need to do two important things.
    Plug the SD card into your computer and open up the config.txt in a text editor. Find the #arm_freq= setting and uncomment it and set frequency to 1000 (you may be able to go a bit higher but I found 1100 to be unstable on my Zero.) the line should look like this:
    arm_freq=1000
    I believe overclocking the zero will void the warranty but who cares on a 5 dollar computer anyway?
    Secondly, and most importantly, boot up retropie and go to the Raspi-config menu.
    Go to advanced options and then into memory split. Set this to 256. (it will look like it will have defaulted to 256 but this is not true until you set it yourself.)
    This should eliminate any little stutters and pops in the audio you might experience and will also allow you to run emulators at higher resolutions if you want. I believe it defaults to around half the video memory and that just isn't enough for smooth video and audio.
    Hope this helps a few people.

    Final Lap on the Wonderswan looks pretty good - wouldn't mind that one myself.
    RetroPie looks like it has gone ahead leaps and bounds now. I am itching to give it a try now. Might give it a go with the Pi 2 I got a couple of months ago.
    The Pie Zero is available in Australia already, but they are already sold out. Currently at -34 stock. Selling for $AUS25 for the board only and they have quite a few essential add-ons available for some quite good pricing.
    I think it is absolutely amazing that we have reached the point where a completely practical computer the size of a credit card has been included as a free item on the front of a magazine, it shows how far things have progressed.
    The whole issue of where the SG-1000 design came from is very interesting, it is an exact match to the components (bar having 2k instead of 1k ram) used in the Colecovision, and we are pretty sure now that that final design for the Coleco came from the two guys at Spectravideo trying to raise funds to build their machine.
    One potential thing is the two guys from Spectravideo used Nishi (Microsoft Japan) to get Bill Gates on board and the Basic and BIOS written. Nishi was the catalyst for the later MSX standard, and showed the early designs to all of the Japanese companies to get them onboard - did he meet with Sega?
    The release date of the SG-1000 does not necessarily match up with this logic, so perhaps the design came from Sega. I am not sure if we will ever know :)

    Great video Steve. I recently bought a Pi3 with all the bells and whistles and have a microSD with RetroPie on it. I use a wireless Xbox 360 controller with USB receiver and it works really well. I have the roms on a USB stick which is mounted when it boots. The Dreamcast and N64 don't run very well even with overclocking and config tweaks but everything is pretty much perfect with the odd exception. The annoying thing about some Mame roms is that you need the CHD files that go with the rom and they are quite hard to track down. I do actually have an old modded original Xbox (or Xbox one as I still call it!) with all the Mame roms and that works flawlessly. I could run all my emulators on the PC but it's very satisfying playing old games on a credit card sized machine :)

    a tip for cabinets and setups where you dont want a keyboard is buy a cheap usb kayboard and strip out the board, wire up the escape button to a tact switch, then hide the board inside.

    I've found that by opening a Mega CD titles CUE in notepad that sometimes the music tracks are renamed compared to what the track titles are in the ISO info so to fix the audio I had to rename all the tracks to what it says they should be named in the cue and it works then. Also in some emulators cases it likes either wave only or mp3 only so I had to convert in the past for support also as well as the renaming the cue names to the correct names of your games tracks. Once it's done you never have to go back to the cue again though. You probably also have to run the game from the cue rather than the bin or iso sometimes to get music. The joy of Mega CD emulation but after you set it up it works unless the emulator doesn't support CD audio.

  • @thepirategamerboy12

    I still find it amazing that a computer the size of a credit card can do so much and now its given away for free on a magazine mind completely blown. I hope Magpi can follow this up with a cd with various software to help support what can be achieved with the pi as a lot of software like recallbox just isn't available on the official site and it would save a lot of hunting around online.

If I ever launch a product, I'm going to call it 'Cock' deliberately. At peak sales times, I'll release a new version, new improved Cock. And maybe a seasonal one for Xmas, 'biggest ever Cock'.

    Most of the Sega CD images that you find on emu rom sites were ripped, then the music tracks were compressed to MP3, and then a new image was created... while this saves hard drive space, it makes the cd image incompatible with actual Sega CD hardware and many emulators, including the Sega cores used by Retroarch, which is why you have no music when you played the Jaguar XJ220 Sega CD image.
    If you are truly interested in playing Sega CD on your Raspberry Pi, you need to find non-compressed Sega CD images in either iso or bin/cue format. You can find them with a search for either "Darkwater" or "TruRip" Sega CD images. Both groups released all the Sega CD games in non-compressed form and they work perfectly, music and all, in Retroarch.

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  8 років тому

      Thanks for the info. I knew about the mp3 thing, but not about Darkwater and TruRip images. I appreciate it :)

    • @heywoodjablowme1624
      @heywoodjablowme1624 8 років тому

      ***** No problem! Make sure you download the images in either bin/cue or iso format... a quick search shows that TruRip released the Sega CD library in both bin/cue (which works with RetroPie) and img/sub/ccd (which _doesn't_ work with RetroPie) formats. You *can* convert ccd images to bin/cue, but it's easier to just download bin/cue in the first place ;)
      www.theisozone.com/ is a good place to start looking ;)

    Since it's likely the Pi is FAT32 only remember if your card is over 32gb large that you may have to format it with program FAT32 Format GUI instead because normal formatting programs won't work if it's past 32gb. Like for example your SD is a 64GB or something and the Pi only reads FAT32 formats.

    • @duhmez
      @duhmez 8 років тому

      +XPsilocybinDream I do not lie, it was a really awesome combination and t worked awesome. It was the celeron 300a processor, which was 66 Mhz X 4.5 = 300 Mhz. The reason why it worked so good was when you set the bus to 100 Mhz, X 4.5, it = 450 Mhz, so there was no odd bus speed anywhere. The celeron 300 OC to 450 Mhz was a rare occurrence that such a greta overclock could work fine on any mobo that alowed u to set the bus speed. The reason is you could not set the multiplier, it was locked, so any good mboo with manual bus speed u could do it and it was rock solid. you can read more about it below for more proof! Duhmez does not lie! My 2 brothers did it too! www.anandtech.com/show/174

    If it's a GUI for Retroarch I guess it would be simple getting the updated cores on there by going to Retroarch and searching linux and patching the ones already on there with the updated and missing ones or isn't it that easy at all? Still what it has anyway although it's missing some cores from Retroarch because I guess Retropie isn't being updated enough with the latest RA patches is good for a fiver.

      +Chris Tolkov I seem to remember reading about someone using an ethernet adaptor of some kind, but I don't know any specifics.

    Can it run any Microsoft Office Suite stuff? Or run any accounting programmes like Quick Books, PDFs, etc? Also any of the real world things that everyone uses such as Whatsapp? How good is it as a DVD Player and what kind of resolution can I expect if I'm streaming a Movie?

      +Horatio W You need to run the Raspian OS for the office type programs. It has some, but I don't know specifically which ones. As I said at the start of the video, I'm not an expert at this. Probably as far from one as you can get, and still make videos... lol. No idea about playing DVDs, but it will stream 1080p videos, depending on the source, and your bandwidth.

      +Horatio W You can run a free office like libreoffice or openoffice, it can read pdf. It can run the whatsapp web client and any web based application as it runs chrome or firefox. It can play dvds if you connect an external dvd drive to it, and it supports video output at full hd 1080p

    That thing can sure crunch some data for $5!

      +gollumondrugs It really can. It has less power than a modern phone, but they cost from around 10 times as much, up to 100 times as much. I can't imagine how they made such a powerful device for so little money.
