Thankfully I got mine - a preorder from JXD - and nothing wrong. They did delay shipping a few times for issues they wanted to sort out for everyone. Happy Chick is less reliable here than the GPD XD. But works great. Wish I could remote play my PS4 - better buttons than the PS Vita
I'm so glad I did not grow up in this era. There are so many mobile PC game hybrids. I would have wanted something like this or the previous mini laptop you covered but would have found its form factor limiting after a while. I'm still a big desktop user, but I find the phone / tablet useful for casual use.
Great video. I had the model before this, the Original Tegra S192. I really liked the device, but alas, after a month or so, WiFi just stopped working. It's a shame it looks like they still have build quality problems.
I was so distracted by the dodgy buttons while recording the video that I forgot to mention the wifi kept dropping out. So yeah, looks like quality control has been an issue for a while.
Do a factory reset. Might help with the WiFi issues

I love this videos man, keep them up! I'm in the market for a handheld gaming device with a reasonable budget and lots of options. What do you say is the best bet?
My personal favourite is the GPD XD.
As you might have known my GPD-XD just stopped working and despite every attempt to contact them to see how I could go about getting it repiared I got no where so in my case it was £160 for a year's use then sold on Ebay for £20 for parts. That said everyone else I know who has a XD hasn't had any issues so I was possibly just very unlucky. Unfortunately because of my experience I wouldn't buy another GPD product.
My XD occasionally has the black screen on bootup problem, but I've found holding volume down (or up) while booting fixes this.

I prefer handheld consoles to be clam shell so I don't have to worry about the screen. But this looks mega cool despite.
I prefer clam-shells myself too, but for those who prefer a big screen and horizontal form factor, this ticks a lot of boxes.
If you hold the fire button down in Dodonpachi to get the huge laser your ship does slow down which is the pay off you have against having the better gun.
This system does look nice but I'm not convinced it's much better than the systems that has gone before. Thanks for a great overview sir!
I imagine the extra ram is useful in certain circumstances, though not too sure about the new GPU. Given the price, probably not worth the upgrade from the non-K model. It's a good step up from the S7800b though.

What is the actual price of this? I'm struggling to find it cheaper than £350. which is crazy. I (now) know you didn't pay that, Steve, but if it is anything close to that for an end consumer, I think VR is now something to consider. I know they fulfill different needs, but as a reto gamer and also a fan of new tech, virtual reality is revolutionary and becoming much more affordable. VR and retro gaming go hand-in-hand in my mind because of the long history of the tech. Oculus Rift with motion controllers - £399. Graphics card - £150. I'm not saying it's cheap, but it's moving in the right direction.
It's currently selling on GearBest for £251.55.
I'm quite enthusiastic about VR myself. I was given an Oculus Rift DK2 by a viewer, and find it fascinating... and have dabbled with Android based VR for a few years.
I don't think it's quite there yet as a mainstream consumer product, but it's getting there. Next will come Augmented Reality, as part of our every day lives.

I own this console but I still haven't learned all the things it does because I love my Archos Gamepad 2 and it's still kinda working. Thanx for the video then, I'll learn from it ;)
What if: you had a media server running Kodi with AEL/HyperSpin/Steam/Etc all loaded into the frontend? Would you be able to stream games to this screen while using the built in controller to play?

You pretty much have to always map the keys which can be a pain. Have you been able to get that going? i'm thinking about buying one of these really hope to see how others are making out!!
There is an update that takes care of the intermittent button problem. Mine works flawlessly after updating it.

Looks kinda cool. Only a "g" wifi? Considering it plays 4K video, how is it for streaming an MKV video file over that wifi? I'm hoping it doesn't bottleneck.
I didn't try streaming anything, but to be honest, the wifi was underwhelming. I forgot to mention it while recording, as I was so distracted by the dodgy buttons, but the wifi kept momentarily dropping out while downloading San Andreas.
Hmm that must've sucked. The only thing I can think of is using one of those cheap usb-to-rj45-ethernet adaptors because they work on just about everything be it mswinodws or linux. From there, one can plug it straight into ethernet routers or even a wifi bridge. You might find however that a usb wifi dongle will work, but older ones sometimes suffered from not-working and must have ndiswrapper used with them on x86.
Thanks for showing us. Interesting tablet with major flaws. From my own experience reviewing these tablets a question regarding quality controls especially with the gaming buttons and controls was a recurring issue. The buttons not working - or intermittently working is a big nono for me. Lag and slowdown - button input lag is something that happens on quite a few of the Android game pads.
Somehow, it doesn't surprise me that the issues I found aren't an isolated case. It's a nice piece of kit in many ways, but I'd be wary, given the price.
I'm interested. I've owned the jxds7800b. It was a capable system, just cheaply built. For this tho, the price will have to come wayyy down
I agree, and they need to sort out their quality control issues.
We were laughing at headphones once the earphones started and now we are laughing at earphones about why we ever changed to them in the first place when that innovation came out and everyone has gone back to real headphones because they are the true cool ones because the sound is better.

Great video! I have both the nvidia and rock chip model. The rock chip seems to work better as is has more ram. There is an update that takes care of the button delay and stay away from the emulators on the happy chick app as they are garbage. Download other emulation apps from the app store and you'll be happy. Battery life is insanely good. I've had mine for months and takes a beating. So far so good. Love it!.

Quite a large unit, which would make it a lot harder to cart around. Does not quite look as finished off as some of the other similar models. A pity about the quality control issues.

I prefer the GPD XD myself. It offers similar performance and is much cheaper. The only reason I can see to buy the JXD is if you prefer its larger size.

While there are no doubt bricks and mortar, and online stores that sell such things, I don't know of any specifically, and do all of my retro gaming shopping on ebay.

Thank you for this video but I want to ask you to find a device that can run the emulator and the old games and also the modern android games and it can be updated to the android systems and contains buttons and touch screen? Do you recommend buying this device or not JXD Singularity S192K?
My personal preference is for the GPD XD, though the version of Android on that is slightly dated now, and I've heard reports of newer games requiring later versions of the OS... so not all games will run on it.

Yes, it does. It doesn't have a dedicated button to activate the keymapping function, but holding down one of the existing buttons does it.

Hello friend I would like to know if the device is compatible with Bluetooth control because my intention is to save the buttons of the video game itself and use it as a console connected to the TV by hdmi, is it possible?
Looks avarge at best, and one button not working in test mode and in use is just bad. i was wondering, would a Raspberry 3 be a better bet if i would want to play emulators on my TV?

I've not used a Pi 3, so not sure how it would compare. Possibly not up to emulating Saturn and Dreamcast. Pi 2 definitely can't. For use on TV I'd recommend the beelink GT1 Ultimate Android TV box.

Hi i bought mines and right out the box my up button on the joypad stopped working ... need help
There's a 3rd party firmware update out there somewhere that supposedly fixes the button problem. I don't have a link though, and it would almost certainly invalidate any warranty.
MAME and other Roms are sometimes 'broken' or not fit for the specific emulator. I know this become we I own the JXD S7800B, the previous version. Happy Chick is the app I avoided, some files are too shady and the access it needs goes too far. By downloading your own emulators you can avoid certain things. Oh yeah, Wi-Fi sucked on the S7800B, not over 5ft!!!!
I also have an S7800b, and remove Happy Chick from every system I have that it comes on. I dunno if I'm cynical, but I just don't trust it :)

I don't know about the range, specifically, but it's not what you could call ultra reliable. Lots of disconnect and automatic reconnect nonsense.

Hey i recently purchased this device but i messed around trying to install a custom recovery on it and i ended up bricking it and its ended up in a mode called maskrom mode (i believe it is like a flashing mode)
I cannot boot it up without the firmware file to flash it with and jxd wont send me it for some reason, would you be able to try and created a backup of your firmware file and send it to me so i can try and flash it and get it working? thanks man

I think I'd like gadgets of this type better if they weren't based on Android.
I like Android a lot, myself, though the native games for it tend to be rather generic, which is a pity.

How does it compare to the JXD S7800b? I had one of those for a short time.
In terms of ergonomics and performance, it's significantly better than the S7800b.
Thanks Steve, The 7800b was a nightmare to play games with due to the design of the thing. Also some emulation (PlayStation and N64) were inconsistent with their performance although that could be due to the Emulators themselves rather than the unit.
How does it perform when connected to a TV via HDMI? This was another thing the 7800b couldn't do properly and would output at a lower refresh rate than was required.
I must confess I didn't try the hdmi output. In retrospect, I can think of a few things I should have tried, but I was so put off by the faulty buttons, that I didn't think of them while recording.
love m s7800b perfect for me, tbh I don't care for playstation games, or n64 etc, I just play megadrive, nes and snes games as well as commodore etc

Steve, I was wondering if it's because it has condensation inside of the device while it was boxed, but as it dried during the day/night, the button now work better, apart from that trigger button.
I don't really like it... I mean, it's powerful, sure, but the design isn't for me, it's just huge and I can't really say it's something I'd like to bring with me.

I agree with you, which is why I went with a GPD XD. Hands down the greatest portable I've ever played. And now the much more powerful GPD XD+ is about to drop at the end of January 2018. I love the original so much that even though i just bought it 4 months ago, I'm still going to get the new one anyway. I'm a huge fan of the clam shell design's portability which also protects the screen. And the GPD's control layout, performance, construction, battery life and inexpensive price are the best combination I've ever come across on a hand held. Really hoping the new model also comes in their red 64 Gb version. The deep burgundy color and high gloss has to be seen to be believed, it's the coolest color.

I dunno. If I wanted an Android device, or something more affordable, I'd go for the GPD XD.
The ONLY problem I've had with my GPD XD is simply when running into some newer android games that require news OS versions. Otherwise, it is still my favorite. The GPD Win and Pocket are also incredible devices, but fit different niches in my life lol

I can't guarantee it will fix the problem, but it did fix the unresponsive buttons on mine. There are several files, the main one being called update-s192-v1.3.1-201707170955.img

The ergonomics are good, the CPU is good, the RAM is good. Not sure about the GPU, the price seems a bit much, and quality control is a real worry. I'd give it 3.5 out of 5 :)

Looks a bit too big for my taste, but I know there's people who prefer bigger devices.
Yes, when I've reviewed things like the GPD XD and WIN that some people have said they prefer the bigger screens on JXD handhelds. Truth be told, my eyes are so bad, I find them easier to look at. I just don't find them practical to take places.

If you were full blind would you still be gaming without being able to see a picture. I'd probably say yes your partner could be your eyes and you could move those directions and be able to make an image in your head.

I bought my Acer Windows 8.1 tablet with its quad core CPU for 60% of that and that was 3 years ago. Granted with 2GB of RAM, but that's enough.

I don't get it how you prefer higher resolution of GT at such a reduced framerate. But that's you I guess :p
Out of curiosity, have you tried running emulated games on your main PC? It's powerful enough to run all of these quite well. Also if you have Windows on it, you can play the native versions of GTA San Andreas at max settings, plus more. :)

Not just for the price but also for the quality of it.
I run emulators on my gaming PC occasionally, but not my main workhorse PC. Storage is at a premium while doing my photography degree, so I don't fill it with ISOs and such.
I could certainly run GTA on my pc, but I mostly just use it for testing these tablets, and for playing on the go. When I'm home and want some GTA, I play on my PS4 :)
I agree that for what it is, even if it was working correctly, the price of this thing seems excessive.

I've since found that a custom firmware update fixes the faulty button bugs, but that update is *really* hard to find... or it was, to the extent that I don't know where I found it. It's a decent system with that update, but it should be, straight out of the box, and it isn't.

So why can it run San Andreas but not Sega rally!
An effective answer to that is long and technical. The shortest answer I can give, that isn't nonsense, is that Sega Rally runs on an emulator... a program used to translate the game code from Sega Saturn (very complex and hard to emulate) to Android (Java, I think). That emulator is optimised for certain hardware... maybe the Nvidia Tegra GPU... while this tablet has different hardware, so while it works, it doesn't work well.
San Andreas, while it may or may not be optimised for this hardware, is running in native Android code, and not having to translate code for one piece of hardware into another... so even though it is visually much more advanced, it is actually less processor intensive, and able to run more smoothly.
