    Folks, this video is 7 years old, so any info on pricing or availability is entirely out of date. Also, I just reviewed the thing... I cannot offer tech support or warranty services. I am not affiliated to the manufacturer, seller, or any other related company. If you buy this thing, you buy it at your own risk, and I take no responsibility.

    for those that are interested, its the OS that really cripples this, in our local market we have one of those independent phone shops that do unlocking, and sell parts etc, they offer a rooting service for chinese tablets, game players and such.
    this particular unit can be rooted by them at a cost of 15.99, he puts a standard android OS on them (varying versions you choose), and even a couple of linux distros if thats your thing( though thats more for tablets).
    he wont tell me how is done though, he did say you have to have a special lead that connects inside, its not straight forward and its easy to brick them.
    so if is possible the info will be on the net somewhere.

    RM/RMVB stands for RealMedia (Variable Bitrate), a proprietary video format developed by RealNetworks. It was an early streaming format that competed with Apple's Quicktime and Microsoft's ASF/WMV formats. Like those other formats in the early days of the web, you needed Real's proprietary player, RealPlayer, to play the videos. RealPlayer was infamous for having tons of adware that you had to spend quite a bit of time disabling. The companion audio format was RA - RealAudio which could be played by either RealPlayer or RealJukebox, which was also a CD ripping and music library program.
    Eventually someone ripped the RM codecs and made RealAlternative to allow other media players to play the files without needing to have RealPlayer installed. These days, most multi-format players such as Media Player Classic - Home Cinema, VLC and MPlayer can play RM/RMVB files without external codecs.
    RM format video was initially popular with some porn sites because it could produce fairly small files, which was important in the era of dialup internet access. Because of this, RM videos gained a reputation of looking like crap. This was rather unfair though as RM videos could look quite good if a high enough bitrate was used, but then you ended up with larger files. Most sites eventually switched over to WMV (Windows Media Video), there was a brief period where FLV was popular and then MP4 came along and pretty much wiped out every other online format for video.

      +Steve Benway (Retro Gaming Collector) If you want to go back even further, there was apparently a format called VivoActive (.VIV) that was used for streaming on some sites. The company was eventually bought by Real and the format disappeared. Again, you needed a proprietary player and not only did most videos look like complete crap, you couldn't seek in them due to a lack of key frames. This was a little before my time (on the net) and my only experience with it was people later posting video clips archived from sites.

      +Steve Benway (Retro Gaming Collector) Hi dude, im going on holiday in a month on a really long plane journey and want something to pass the time, are there any of these kind of devices that you would actually recommend?.

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  8 років тому

      Not really cheap ones, to be honest. There are some good Android devices like the JXD S7800b, or if you want something cheaper, a 2nd hand PSP Go with custom firmware. I carry one of those around quite often.

  • @HiroPlaysGames

    Haha... I learned a while back that if it says MP5 on it, it's not worth using. Basically the Chinese marketers figured that if their device could support both MP3 and MP4 files, that justified calling it an MP5 player (I've actually seen up to MP7 being used). Back in the early 2000's, MP5 sorta became a shortcut for saying "cheap, crappy Chinese knockoff of a decent portable media player".
    Even better when it doesn't even support MP4. ;D

    If this had been around in the 1990's it would have been amazing, it's interesting how technology has advanced so far, I'd never have thought it possible to store an entire NES library on a single handheld back when I was younger, now it doesn't even excite me and I consider most of these machines to be crap, which is sad in a way, I guess we have all become somewhat spoiled by the progress and improvements that have come with the times.
    Have you attempted to add a Spectrum, Amiga, 2600 or Lynx emulator to this, if any of those were to work well, it would be a nice piece of kit.

    Wow, this looks like cheap and chearful, sometimes even woeful, tat hardware season on the Benway channel. It's really interesting to see these cheap chinese hardwares in action Steve. I'm loving the series so far.
    Is your favorate tat hardware still the Lexibook or has your favorate tat hardware changed at all since you brought the job lot of new tat hardwares?

    • @SteveBenway

      The Lexibook is probably the best in terms of ability combined with portability, if not actually the most powerful or flexible.

      Hi, Steve Benway I was wondering if by any chance you ever updated the firmware on any of these players you have? I did order the Coolboy X6 intelligence model with firmware p2_100423_int_us225a. Do any of your players have that firmware? And you were spot on in your video review they are crap when it comes to the D-pad and running anything other than NES, GB and GBA. Games that require precision is just garbage on this thing missing sound channels etc. But games such as Pokemon or similar is good and run great. Not saying a firmware update will fix D-pad problem, just wanted to have latest firmware to iron out any bugs this device may have before I give to my young son on Christmas. Since he's a Pokemon, Final Fantasy fanatic I'll just load those type of games on it lol. Can you point me in the right direction if possible because I cant find anything on this other than a software called FRM Pro 1.1.9a that's used to update it. Not asking you to go out of your way to help.
      Thanks in advance. :)

    As I have recently discovered your channel (and you may have already done a video on this subject) - do you have a sizeable collection of gaming / hardware books and magazines? What books related to video games do you suggest we should check out?

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  10 років тому

      I have a big pile of old Amiga magazines that I was given, and several years worth of Retro Gamer magazine, before I gave up buying that. The only books I have are the instruction manuals that came with the systems. They make for pretty dry reading, and aren't something I'd recommend if you're reading for pleasure.

    My dad bought it for my little brother, literally this exact same one with the white and everything (he can't differentiate this from an actual psp). Played some gba games on it for two weeks and then the shoulder pads broke and wouldn't work or move anymore. Soon the d-pads started breaking too. I think I could fix it but after realizing how frustrating the controls are, I decided it's not worth it.

    Fair review Steve. There are so many reviews of Chinese handsets that don't give them a fair overview. It's refreshing to find one that does. I actually love these things and let's face it for the price it's a fine piece of kit? There are much better ones out there. Look for different named brands rather than these 'generic' ones. JXD machines are pretty good as are the likes of Yinlips. They are more expensive but much better quality.

    According to the internet, an MP5 is a type of machine pistol made by Hockler and Kess (or something to that effect). Which is good, because the only thing this PSP knockoff is good for is target practice.

    • @SteveBenway

    Might be related to the Dingoo series of handhelds, perhaps try their forums.
    The screen does look pretty good, but yeah the emulation of anything other than GBA does not look that flash when scaled.
    A friend of mine game me a Yinlips YDPG18, that has a more normal Android based interface that you can control which emulators are on it and plays a lot more.
    It looks very similar to this one, although I would say the buttons are better than this unit.

    They lied about the screen too. The resolution is only 480x272 (coincidentally the exact same as the PSP!) so it's nowhere near 720p HD (1280x720) and is not even 480p (720x480). But granted the PSP proves that resolution may sound really low but on a 4.3" screen is basically fine. Not even the Vita is HD as it's 960x544 (544p) so I thought for sure they're lying when they say it's a High Definition screen. Still looks decent for the device it's the best thing about it I'm sure.

    Vob is the video codec for DVDs and dat is likewise for the old video-cd format, so if it CAN play those I suppose those claims on the box are true. You would just have to play them from an SD card, not a disc.
    Ah yes, Konami Krazy Racers! A little wave of nostalgia hit me there, it was the first GBA game I bought on the day the GBA was released. The frame rate is definitely wonky here, the original was pretty slick. Shame you fast-forwarded through the theme tune though,That would have taken me right back!

    A D-pad being separate buttons often won't cut it. Individual buttons won't work like a real pad. The PSP/Sony way of using a single piece of plastic looking like individual buttons does work. But a lot of these companies just go for the separate button solution resulting in a shitty d-pad.

    after some search about the game krazy racer from Konami, I learned one of the character that is racing is Gray fox. pretty cool. Also the performance of the games are just bad, the framerate is very low. I didn't play those games on gba or others here but is the the performance given in the original systems.
    even if it ran those games properly, would it be legal...or is it legal ? I question the legal issues behind this system

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  10 років тому

      The legal use of roms in emulators requires that you own the original cart or disk. These Chinese companies selling systems with game roms pre-installed are definitely in breach of copyright law... but China doesn't care about copyright law.

    This might make a better candidate for modding than the Slimstation that I commented on in your video earlier today. It has a bigger screen, better speaker, and an SD card slot. I wonder if the CPU in this is less powerful than the Slimstation, or if having to drive that bigger screen taxes it too much. Maybe a lesser CPU was the trade-off for a camera, radio, etc. Even so, the shell, screen, etc, might make a good Raspberry Pi housing. I've actually just won the bidding on a used JXD S7800b Android gaming tablet on eBay. It has a more powerful dual-core [edit: quad-core] CPU, twin thumbsticks, and the full workings of an Android tablet. I don't know if you've heard of it, there are a few videos of it on YT.

    Idk mate it doesn't seem terrible....trying to pack wayyy to many things in it I agree should have taken things out and focused more on others....but as just a general multimedia device for the person with limited funds it doesn't seem awful. Just my thoughts though everyone has their own view! Thanks for the overview steve!

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  10 років тому

      It would be tolerable if it weren't for that godawful d-pad. It renders so many games unplayable, that the whole thing becomes an exercise in frustration. A person with limited funds would do much better to get a 2nd hand psp.

    • @nicksac105
      @nicksac105 10 років тому

      Does the analog looking stick not work for the games? Or is the only option the shite pad? I do agree that pad looks miserable. It is ashame that the frame rate on movies sucks cause if it wasn't bad that would be quite the handy portable movie player. Unless the frame rate is better if playing them off SD card versus internal memory?The screen is pretty massive and looks like nice quality. It's pretty amazing how far screen quality has come in the past 5 years. So many cheap devices like this have actually quite amazing screens

    • @SteveBenway
      @SteveBenway  10 років тому

      The "analogue" nub works, but the travel is long and the movement stiff, so anything requiring a quick response is impossible.
      I haven't tried running video from the SD card... should give that a try.

      Yea id love to see a clip of how it runs from SD memory versus internal!! Because if it runs like normal that from the SD than its safe to say this thing would get much better!

      Yes, it does. Thing is, just because a system uses a given CPU, doesn't mean this console will play its games. It needs the emulators to be built in, and this thing only has a few... and not all are documented.
