What an excellent video! My guess is that Antlerboy guy you mention allows for events to start an otherwise impossible run. Pokewalker routes seem to be considered encounter routes where one can get the first legitimate encounters. But hey, you explained it a lot better. Love the thoroughness! Bravo!
I mean for Meatball I remember getting into an argument with him about the water run on G/S, he wrote it as impossible as I explained “You can just barely make it to Faulkner with rage stats and minimum battles if you skip sprout tower” and he finally made it from impossible to an black one. Also for story nuzlockes I love Flygons, he really loves to tell an story with his baby Locke, the Spheal team 6 run, and his runs using region evil team grunt’s pokemon
There's quite a few runs that you have to bend rules one way or another to complete, but how you bend them is what makes those runs interesting. Big fan of Flygon's videos! I'm not usually into a lot of the story-telling to be honest, but it's still something I admire when he can take the run and turn it into something almost completely different. Plus he's just a cool guy.
Goddamn, that intro was great, we all agree that people should just play the way they want, but... there's something so endearing about nerding out over a spreadsheet and trying to make it into actual research, isn't there?
THIS is what mono types are really about. Super limited encounters, odds stacked against you with terrible type match-ups and the strategies to make it happen. Awsome work, can't wait to check out more of your content.
I felt the same way about a lot of monotype runs as you did at the beginning. The early research/planning sections made this a lot more interesting than I ever would have expected. Great video
I very much respect the breakdown of “the line” of what is acceptable and not for “official” runs. Im glad to see these monotype challenges done with clear boundaries set. Maybe the Ice type run can be revisited in the future by the guy who first completed it or by another. I also respect you not using Jirachi, but I feel like Registeel was a totally viable encounter since it isn’t overpowering in any way other than stall. Either way, well done. 👏🏼👏🏼
I originally had this cool idea to split the last half of the run in two, doing it once without Regi and once with him. Footage with him in the Elite 4 even exists! Unfortunately the video was already waaaay longer than I meant for it to be so I had to cut the second run. But I completely agree that we should just start allowing the Regis because they're cool guys.
I fond it a bit funny that in the table it says “there’s no dark types in FR/LG”, but says there are steel. Yes there’s magnemite for steel, but (via trading) eevee can evolve into umbreon, and failing that, Murkrow is in fire red.
Eevee can't evolve into espeon/umbreon in FRLG, iirc. The day night cycle doesn't work, and even if it did, you can't get johto pokemon until you get the national dex. Thats why it says "none." You can't organically get dark types in the game. The whole point of the mono type nuzlocke.
@@HandsomeLongshanks if trading is allowed, you could trade eevee to another FR/LG game, trade That to RSE evolve to umbreon. Then trade back, right? It would be finnicky but possible before the first gym as to trade you’d only need a second pokemon?
@@KuulpbObnoxiously enough, No. FR and LG have an annoying mechanic where they can't trade outside of each other until after receiving the national dex and completing a post-game quest to allow trades to Gale of Darkness, Coliseum, Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald. Maybe, one could breed an eevee in an already completed file, transfer, evolve to umbreon, transfer back, and then trade to a new copy of FR presuming national dex mechanics don't stop it.
So this inspired me to take a look and a crack at one of these. (I also do a lot of challenge runs but never did a monotype) and G/S Grass is possible but extremely unlikely without RNG manipulation. You get a Chikorita and Bellsprout and you need near perfect DVs in HP, DEF, and Special on both of them (Chikorita needs 12+ HP, 10+ DEF, and preferably 8+ Special; Bellsprout needs 8+,12+,13+ respectively) Then you can take down the first gym trainer with the level 9 speaow with both pokemon at 8 (still with a lot of luck) with both pokemon holding a berry with the sequence; Chikorita: Growl, Growl, Growl, Razor Leaf, Switch. Bellsprout: Growth, Growth, Vine Whip, Vine Whip. IF you got the 8+ Special on Chikorita 2 of those 3 attacks have to crit. Under 8 and both Vine Whips have to crit, and the spearow has to never crit. Both pokemon have to survive because otherwise you will over level from the second gym trainer (Who is totally free but the exp he gives forces us to not be able to sack). Then for Falkener the Pidgey is mostly a freebee, and Pidgeotto can be taken down the same way as the first Spearow (still with the required crits on your end and no crits of falkners end) This also needs 4 berries so you have to start near midnight to get the berry trees to reset since you'd only have 3 by this point in game otherwise. So yeah, not impossible, just very, very unlikely.
I think the reason why the G/S Grass one says it's impossible is because one runs out of new Grass encounters about halfway through Johto and several are locked in Kanto. However, I do still think it's doable because: 1. Dupes clause is optional, so you can still catch Exeggcute in many of the areas with no new encounters, and 2. Exp. Share allows to dump points on Pokémon not intended for use in order to avoid overleveling the main party members.
@@LagrimaArdiente I don't do youtube so no recording, but I completed my run of this yesterday (To lance not to red). After the insane luck it takes to beat gym 1 it is a super easy run. And yeah I ran with dupes and after national park there are no more encounters, til post game but that can't be the reason its marked, because dark isn't marked impossible and that is only umbreon until postgame
Isn't there a special event mystery egg that can be bulbasaur in gen 2? I don't know where in game you receive it from but it is on the pokemon center event list, with it starting at level 5.
didn't expect such a deep dive into what makes the nuzlocke and all the rules and stuff- very well done! steel is my favourite type so i of course love this run
I feel like there should be a rule that says "If you cannot viably build a team of 6 for the elite four off of encounter rules from traditional Nuzlockes, then remove rules from the ruleset until you can. i.e. removing 1 encounter per route rule, remove species clause, remove legendary clause, etc."
A run I think would be great is a nuzlocke using unoptimized stats. Physical attackers forced to used Special attacks. Glass cannons being tanks. EV train your babies in their worst stats and use them in that way. I'll even double-dog dare you. And you can NEVER refuse a double-dog dare. Christmas Story told me so.
My also ADHD having ass really enjoyed this run. Your comments and everything about you and the video was very enjoyable, thanks for the video! Eagerly waiting for the next monotype run you publish, id love tobsee you try the other "impossible" types!!
My boy Registeel deserves more screentime Also the reason Flannery started using tackle is because the gen 3 ai can check if their moves hit or not. And since 1 hp of damage is more than 0, they will use the move that hits.
I usually just replace the starter with the latest to find, not legendary pokemon you can get in game or version exclusive of the opposite game, to give that pokemon a chance to actually be used, and not just be fodder for end game next corner lol
My opinion on what should be allowed: You can get a Scyther for the evolution. No problem in allowing in the catch, but I would say you should not be allowed to use it in battle until it is properly a Steel-type. I'd also rather see a Jirachi from the beginning or Registeel. But the fun part about it being your challenge is you make it what you want. It only becomes a problem when people start claiming technicalities regarding being the first person to do something. If someone doesn't it like it that much, they can become the one who does it.
Pretty much! I personally see Jirachi as an easier answer, but others will see the bugs that way instead, and that's totally okay. The challenge is purely what you make of it!
i didn’t see anyone else say it but it looks as if the only two remaining pokemon were the ones you captured 😂 loved the video and the intro was so thought out and researched well
Love the video and the breakdown leading up to it. I'm a monotype nuzlocker primarily myself, have done all 18 types at least once (sometimes twice) on HC nuzlocke rulesets with a similar set of rules to you. Generally my rule for starters has been if one of the 3 original starters is not the type I'm doing or doesn't become that type down the line, I allow myself to choose one NFE mon of that type in that game's regional dex to choose as my starter, with the stipulation they have to have around a low 400 BST maximum when I pick them up. It's definitely made a lot of runs at least more plausible and also made the early game boss fights not as significant of a coin flip as they can be for some more brutal runs. I also started allowing event mons, pokewalker, dreamworld etc encounters for some runs, but I've gradually leaned into that more as I've done harder and more tight encounter runs.
For example I did BW2 mono rock, allowed myself to use Archen as the starter and then once I unlocked the ability to get dreamworld on a few mons that were in that game's regional dex (Larvitar, Carracosta) I used a third party tool to actually have them appear in the dreamworld with randomized IVs and natures and then used them for that run. I also allow legendaries in my runs but ban any cover legendaries or legendaries that are on par with them
Honestly, I was too! I find the most joy in these challenges when we can build off of the ideas of others and push them further. It's the best way we can all improve!
Why? Why did I cried when mercury went down? Why did I remember Silver's and Cooper's sacrifice till the end? And why did I root so much for Cobalt's win? Really an amazing journey, good job!
One of the runs he called impossible, albeit for a different reason, is Gold/Silver with only Water types. Why? Because Totodile literally cannot reach Falkner before he breaches the level cap of 9. But the Gold speedrun fights only mandatory trainers and no wild Pokemon and just barely manages to keep to the level cap of 9 when Falkner is reached. And since Totodile is very easily able to beat Falkner using Rage, the run opens up massively because of the Old Rod.
Currently the spreadsheet only shows G/S Grass run as being impossible due to exp management, but I can see Water having similar issues. There are a lot of generation 2 events though so if you include those it becomes a bit of a walk in the park.
@@keeperplays He must have recently changed it because originally it said Water and Fire were impossible due to Exp management and Grass was impossible outright.
First time on your channel and I gotta say this was an excellent intro! This was so done, the edits were great, and you are so well spoken you got a new sub!
Dude, this was awesome. I’ve liked your stuff for a little while, but I think this might be a new favorite of mine. Also, pikachu nuzlocke! Do it. I’d love to see how you strategize it- it might be fun to take cue’s from Flygon’s Spheal run and give them each an item and egg move.
Just found your channel for this first time and i am SHOCKED you only have ~4k subscribers. You are making videos that are quality wise on par with creators with 10-100x that number. 🙏 Here's hoping the algorithm blesses you soon.
I think the GSC steel type only run chose Scizor because technically there are 3 "earliest encounters" if you want them to be Steel type. You can first aquire the metal coat from Magnemite on the route to the left of Ecruteak, making Magnemite, Scizor and Steelix all valid as "first encounters" and as a Magnemite supremacist I would argue you should always select Magnemite ETA: I just got to the bit where you sorta addressed that, I fully agree it's 100% players choice here
gen 3 has some amazing music and i love the trumpet :D from the team boss music to the legendary music...specificly ray...to the champion steven theme.
For the Flannery fight specifically, Aron was never really an option to sack as it was going to be needed to get through the fight regardless of her going for Overheat or not. His ability to take a hit was too good for the fight. But then that reasoning carries over into type diversity! I always knew I was going to be keeping Scizor, which gave me a Ground neutrality, meaning the immunity on Skarmory wouldn't be as necessary for the team. Keeping Aggron pairs really well with Scizor too as he isn't weak to Fire, the only type Scizor is weak to. Fire isn't super prominent in the game past Flannery, but it does come up in Drake's fight, which is definitely relevant!
Pikachu Nuzlocke would go very hard, especially if you’re using the event pikachu (maybe one the cosplay/cap pikachu as well depending on generation) and various events to showcase some of the wacky event moves they give it
Wouldn't the earliest encounter for emerald be jiratchi if we're allowing events? Or do we also disallow legends? Double checked, yeah we're not counting legendaries.
A tip for future runs if you use mystery gift mons that are disobedient - probably best not to bring them all the way to the level cap. The higher level they are, the more likely they are to disobey and the more likely they are to not use any move instead of a random move. Also you need to beat Brawly to go to Norman so you can't delay him until the E4
TECHNICALLY you could argue that, since you need to trade to a different save file for scizor and steelix, that means that trading with another cartridge is in general inside the rules. Since trading in emerald is available before the first eligible encounter that TECHNICALLY implies that trading with anither cartridge is a viable way to aquire your first pokemon making EVERY steel type pokemon that can be aquired in any of the gen 3 games through any means a TECHNICALLY viable starter. I know this isnt in the spirit of the challenge and rules you set for yourself but its fun to think about
Personally I disagree. I think trade evolutions are cringe and just treat them as item evolutions when I obtain the trade item necessary to evolve them. For standard trade evolutions I just evolve them either immediately or around level 36 (depending on the line and game). The only reason I consider trades at all is just because GameFreak forces them into certain evolution lines. Mostly this is to keep some strategy between which selected version I play for a specific challenge. For example, when I played the F-Tier White 2 run, I chose White 2 specifically because Camerupt was White 2 exclusive. If I allowed trades as you propose, then it wouldn't matter which version I played because I would just give myself a Numel whenever because technically I could trade. This may be moot depending on what events you allow for yourself, but there's also a difference between researching specific events or encounters to start a run with vs "trading" every possible encounter to yourself at the start of the game.
I get putting Impossible is just meaning to get really really lucky with everything in the game. I would love to try the Impossible grass types only Gen 2 runs myself. Just to try and prove that nothing in pokemon is impossible, just it takes the definition of insanity to beat. To quote myself "It doesnt matter how sturdy the wall is, you run into it enough its going to cave in eventually"
i think if in a Nuzlocke you lost a Pokémon because of Self-Destruct because it not listen to you,it shouldn't count, since that's not your fault, isn't skill issue or because you can't predict your opponent moves, this Pokémon who have that kind of move at least should have 1 extra life if you are playing a Nuzlocke, losing a Pokémon because of that is just unfair to me,it wasn't in your control.
I do completely understand the sentiment behind this, but I think part of the skill expression was finding a way to forget the attack to remove the variable of selecting it, as well as deciding when the risk of using it with the attack is worth it. After all, if using the move gets me a win, like it did against Brawly, then it wouldn't feel like a genuine win to me if I didn't also count the loss that caused it.
Might not be the first one to point this out, but according to the wiki the two Jirachi distributions in Gen 3 are actually Ruby and Saphire exclusive. Maybe there is one I'm not aware of, but if this is the case, I would have loved to see Registeel be part of the squad.
There were a few (3 I believe) Japan-exclusive events for Jirachi that I could have considered. But yeah, unfortunately all English events for it were RS exclusive.
RS Mono-steel should be 100% possible with the wishmaker jirachi from the Colosseum bonus disc (with a bonus of not needing time travel if you can stomach the absurd price they go for) since it provides a level 5 jirachi to the party.
Actually, Torkoal's White Smoke ability prevents me from lowering it's stats. So the only way to get the White Herb to activate is by forcing it to Overheat.
Could you post rule sets for different nuzlock types and for scarlet and violet (because they play so different) i love how you analyze and create your challenges based on logic and balancing
I'm happy to try and answer any questions! For Scarlet/Violet encounters I just catch the first viable Pokemon I see in an area. But if you have specific questions feel free to ask!

man, i rarely take time to listen to lengthy explanations on my second screen but you earned my sub :D
Pikachu Nuzlocke! In Pokémon Platinum!
This is the best nuzlocke video I’ve seen in a minute! Way to go dude
Glad you enjoyed!
Really glad you enjoyed!
Nice to see this channel start to rise
Love this style of content, keep up the good work!
The Magnemite line is one of my favorites, super cool to see Magneton seal it at the end! Grats!
Here from ChaoticMeatball's channel; this is going to be a fun video
Just found your channel for this first time and i am SHOCKED you only have ~4k subscribers. You are making videos that are quality wise on par with creators with 10-100x that number. 🙏 Here's hoping the algorithm blesses you soon.
PIKACHU NUZLOCKE litsrally just the prep for this run at the start won me over as a viewer
I think the GSC steel type only run chose Scizor because technically there are 3 "earliest encounters" if you want them to be Steel type.
You can first aquire the metal coat from Magnemite on the route to the left of Ecruteak, making Magnemite, Scizor and Steelix all valid as "first encounters" and as a Magnemite supremacist I would argue you should always select Magnemite
ETA: I just got to the bit where you sorta addressed that, I fully agree it's 100% players choice here
pikachu nuzlocke good luck buddy
gen 3 has some amazing music and i love the trumpet :D from the team boss music to the legendary music...specificly ray...to the champion steven theme.
Steven Stone!! Put out all the doubt for a 100% complete run!!
...With just an Aggron and Magneton??
Pikachu Nuzlocke! Sounds ... terrifying lol. Best of luck!
Scizor my GOAT putting in work as always, love to see it
super neat! would really love to see the reasoning for why each pokemon was sacked in flannery, very surprising to go with aggron over skarmory!
Pikachu nuzlocke? 👀 I like that idea, the gyarados only run from flygon was really fun
I’ve done the three starter types, flying, and dark now in Emerald and honestly you’d be surprised how hard every run besides water was.
As I'm now looking into Dragon and Ice... No, yeah, I believe you. Steel is going to look so tame in comparison.
oh my gosh scythers back spirte is so cute in gen iii
Pikachu Nuzlocke would go very hard, especially if you’re using the event pikachu (maybe one the cosplay/cap pikachu as well depending on generation) and various events to showcase some of the wacky event moves they give it
This was an awesome video
Wouldn't the earliest encounter for emerald be jiratchi if we're allowing events? Or do we also disallow legends? Double checked, yeah we're not counting legendaries.
A tip for future runs if you use mystery gift mons that are disobedient - probably best not to bring them all the way to the level cap. The higher level they are, the more likely they are to disobey and the more likely they are to not use any move instead of a random move.
Also you need to beat Brawly to go to Norman so you can't delay him until the E4
Did not know that! I just assumed it was the same as long as they were over the level. Good to know - thank you!
pickachu only, Lets go! Heck the iv and moves if needed to, pickachu needs it afterall
I'd be interested to see you do the "incomplete" ones at the very least
Would be nice to see those spaces cleared off for real, wouldn't it?
big props to you for not using the collo bonus disc event for the jirachi
SPREADSHEET? Well damn maybe I should attempt my first nuzlocke video too
starting with registeel would have been hilarious.
it only knows selfdestruct at level 5
I would personally say your starter should be some combination of the earliest possible obtainment and the closest stats to a starter.
Pikachu nuzlocke, it would be cute if you did it in Yellow
Ooooh a new keeper video!
Edit: May I comment “pikachu Nuzlocke” 50 times?? Would that count?
Tempting...
Thanks for the fun and passion. ^^
Do a Pikachu Nuzlocke in ORAS with all 5 Contest Pikachu (and 1 regular ofc)
Oh this is a good idea!
@@keeperplays 5 contest Pikachus and the final being a regular pika evolved into a Raichu just for an electric boss feel.
You cannot make a million dollars. Ever. It's IMPOSSIBLE.
Correct, so we'll settle for $999,999. 😁😁😁
Copper pulling a vegeta type sacrifice so soon cause it knew what else was to come and wanted none of that
54:04 GO TEAM SKY
Would love to see a pikachu nuzlocke
Awesome video! You've inspired me to help fill out the spreadsheet! Also Do a Pikachu Nuzlocke! lol
Alright! I challenge you to knock out the Rock-type DP space! Bonus points if you use Rampardos. Good luck!
@@keeperplays Oh jeez I'll see what I can do lol
You can DO IT. BELIEVE!
Dont poop on the floor seems like an optional rule, ill ignore it in my "runs"😆
I don't watch this stuff, but i really enjoyed this amd watched it through.
I'm glad you did!
What a video!!
Pikachu Nuzlocke!!! Let's goooo!
Pikachu Nuzlocke plz!
I cant imagine this being a problem, Aggron is clearly the best pokemon and should carry the entire game
i think if in a Nuzlocke you lost a Pokémon because of Self-Destruct because it not listen to you,it shouldn't count, since that's not your fault, isn't skill issue or because you can't predict your opponent moves, this Pokémon who have that kind of move at least should have 1 extra life if you are playing a Nuzlocke, losing a Pokémon because of that is just unfair to me,it wasn't in your control.
My favorite part is that meditite fight where you need to hit it when it uses focus punch yet you used a move that is not 100% accurate lol
i want to see a pikachu clone nuzlocke
Might not be the first one to point this out, but according to the wiki the two Jirachi distributions in Gen 3 are actually Ruby and Saphire exclusive. Maybe there is one I'm not aware of, but if this is the case, I would have loved to see Registeel be part of the squad.
There were a few (3 I believe) Japan-exclusive events for Jirachi that I could have considered. But yeah, unfortunately all English events for it were RS exclusive.
@@keeperplays Fair enough, great video anyway
RS Mono-steel should be 100% possible with the wishmaker jirachi from the Colosseum bonus disc (with a bonus of not needing time travel if you can stomach the absurd price they go for) since it provides a level 5 jirachi to the party.
Okay yeah I’m going to need that Pikachu Run.
Something i noticed, at 45;32 the intimidate from silver got rid of the white herb so i dont know if you needed to sac skarmory there
Actually, Torkoal's White Smoke ability prevents me from lowering it's stats. So the only way to get the White Herb to activate is by forcing it to Overheat.
I feel like Mercury and Cobalt could've been saved there, but regardless the run is completed!
It's like hearing me speak, lmao. Subbed.
Pikachu Nuzlocke! I think the cosplay pikachus would be best for this
That narration is great
Steven is the final boss, incomplete
Credits rolled, game complete.
@@keeperplays Valid, however, my heart is broken nonetheless
Pikachu Nuzlocke!!
I'd love to see a Pikachu Nuzlocke!
