@@youtub-fj8mu well, everything was on official hardware, no emulators involved. As someone who also did this myself, I can say that Colosseum and XD cut out an ENORMOUS time in this. And it's really simple to run these games on a Wii, if you don't care about playing on 100% retail copies. Then the main hassle is just needing LeafGreen for Slowpoke, deciding if you're gonna use glitches or not for Deoxys, and getting Celebi, which needs the japanese games.
I swear Johnstone is one of the few UA-camrs who can captivate me in an hour-long video that I don't understand. The narration and the comedy is so compelling! Thank you; this and the video on getting every medal in B2W2 have made for an incredibly entertaining two hours!
Finally someone else knows my suffering...This was hell to do back in the day. The fact that you can do it in less than 2 weeks with planning is crazy to me. It took me months to get everything lined up between school and homework back then.
The three legendary beasts being captured by the villains is mirrored in Pokémon Ranger, and that game was even more insane. Your run as a Ranger ended if your styler broke (or just set you back to the last save if you're WEAK), and the beasts LOOOOVE to attack your styler on sight. Manipulating them to attack and trying to do loops before they start sprinting again is a necessity. Not only that, but there's THREE FIGHTS IN A ROW. you basically need to grind Poké Assist gauge until your Plusle/Minun can paralyse them, and hope you can complete 20+ loops to catch ONE OF THEM. It is the single hardest battle of attrition in the game, yet somehow feels balanced(?) anyway. Shadows of Almia would actually redo the capture system, replacing X number of loops with a dedicated friendship gauge that filled up per loop, and progress decayed instead of wiping out entirely when you stopped. The difference in quality of life is night and day, and nothing will compare to OG Ranger Charizard or the beast trio. All this to say, legendary beasts captured by evil team, something about nickels, weird happening something.
You just awoke traumatic memories of child me, oh my god. I beat Charizard in OG ranger by waiting on the attack where he puts down a bunch of little fires, but walks slowly around them. Rather than carefully move my line between them, I just quickly tapped all the fires around The Zard to remove them, clearing the area to quickly loop around him. Prior to discovering this strategy, I actually got stuck on him, resigning myself to never beating the game. Charizard is a monstrous fight, and Entei gave me very similar trouble afterward. Though I did beat it, the challenge was indeed brutal. Part of me kinda finds Almia a bit too easy in comparison, but it's definitely a better experience overall.
i lost my save data for ranger while i was almost at the end and i don't think i will EVER touch that game again. i was fortunate enough to be playing on an emulator so i could easily load up the fights again,, but that didn't stop charizard from kicking my ass for an hour straight. it doesn't help that you have to fight him AGAIN later on. i cant imagine fighting the beasts, even if i have my little cheat saves

One thing Johnstone didn't talk about is if you want to transfer these Pokemon up to Pokemon Home you will have to spend another 8 or so hours just to transfer them up because of the Gen 3 to 4 limitation and the stupid hoops you have to go through. I just did it myself just for the Gen 3 mons and it took more than a whole day of just transferring up after I caught them all. No generation is more time consuming than Gen 3 by a long shot.

It's not free time if you're doing it as a job as a youtuber. There's a reason why normal people don't do living dexs, and why youtubers do. Try and figure out why
@thomascampbell5321 I'm not saying he isn't lucky to be a youtuber but also pouring 150 hours to the cause, doing additional research outside of that, and doing this all while streaming and investing in different equipment for long periods of time isn't necessarily the easiest thing. I used to do streams on platforms outside of youtube, and OBS and my internet connection alone made me want to stop doing it despite overwhelming positive reception. There's a lot of behind the scenes work that goes into videos like these too, as well as timing it right so algorithm doesnt mess you up. I was fortunate to stream and make content on my friend's site, that already had a built in userbase and not have to start from scratch on somewhere like twitch or youtube.
Amazing video, takes true dedication to pull something like that! 👏🏻 For those that still want a complex Dex of gen 3 there exist ROMs where in LFRF you can catch all pokemons as well as RS. Of course it's not a 100% legit way to do it. But all it takes is a phone or computer and to download the ROM as well as the Emulator.

Good lord. I am amazed at your dedication. Emerald was one of the first pokemon games I played through to the end and it always bothered me that the National Dex was so far out of reach. Amazing video!
Huge respect! I've been slowly completing the national dexes on all of my childhood copies (thankfully I had all the games and the hardware needed anyways) and Gen 3 took me almost a decade (2015-23) to fully do. I had every pokemon needed, legit acquired, by 2016 thanks to some good fortune but trading every pokemon between every game was such a discouraging process until AbsolBlogs released his box edits. So much slower than your time, but it's just been a side project while I finished Uni and started Antarctic research. About halfway through gen 4 now! Keep up the great work :)
Im trying to do that right now myself. This has always been a childhood dream of mine. Are you saying you have a legit mew and deoxys though? Short of just getting on reddit and begging anyone who has a real one to mail me a cartirdge, meet up in real life, or find one on ebay for a billion dollars, I am not sure how to go about LEGIT completing this

Edit: I DID IT!!! Twice! That makes 6 out of 10 regional Pokédexes complete! I chose Cyndaquil and Totodile for my Emerald starters, since I already had Chikorita! I also finished my 2 FireRed and LeafGreen Kanto Pokédexes a while back! Now... RUBY AND SAPPHIRE x2 remain! I'm playing these for RetroAchievements so there is some emulation involved! But I also bought 5 GBA SPs, 5 Wireless Adaptors, and 5 EZ-Flash Omegas to do 5 player Wireless Adaptor stuff! Yep, I spent QUITE a bit of money JUST to play 5 player games of Berry Crush, Pokémon Jump, AND Dodrio Berry Picking! Am I insane? Well, let's put it this way... decent Wireless Adaptor emulation development is slower than a mound of molasses, so I just figured that I should just get the physical hardware since I'm not waiting till 2025 for a CHANCE of 5 player Wireless Adaptor emulation being implemented into mGBA!!!!
Another great video Johnstone! As always giving me inspiration for future challenges, after catching every Pokemon from their original region in a Poke Ball with my OT and moving to HOME I wanted another Catch Em All style challenge, I'd love to have every Pokemon available from every generation or something like that in HOME but since Bank is closing and there isn't enough space to do that in HOME anyway something like what you have completed here might be my next best option, keeping all the Pokemon on their original games and such. If you mean retro COLLECTING then you're right but if you want to just play the games, don't bother paying these prices, emulate them.

@@steel5897 Also you can fast forward game to catch the right pokemon/nature without completely losing your sanity.
Well is still a tiring task if you go for shiny.
@@LtCommanderTatoYou can just use cheat codes for shinies (obviously you have to restrain yourself a bit while using cheat in order to not optimize the whole game away)
@@perguto Obviusly you can use codes for anything but that defeat the pupose of playing the game, im just talking about the tools of emulator to speedup the time when you run in grass and fight fast, some games specially DS ones are very slow in animations and between scenes.
I only would use codes to access the event tickets, nothing more.
Took me through my childhood multiple times throughout this, thanks for going through this for us to enjoy it I truly appreciated watching this today!
As someone who played these games, i know how stupid lucky this run was and am amazed beyond words
i am still yet to complete a single pokédex and this guy is lapping me like ten times over
If you need help getting exclusives or something lmk I'm always down to help!
I didn’t have one done either until Violet. You can do it!
Might I suggest bdsp or let's go. Both have very simple and easy to complete dexes
X/Y and ORAS is the cheapest and it allows you to complete a living dex up to Gen 6. just missing the mythicals.
I just recently finished my SwSh dex in about 7ish days! If you need some exclusives in there, I’d be up to help if you need!

Good Job John.

This is a super big accomplishment, doing a Gen 3 full living dex without any glitches (besides having to ACE inject the event items as that's unavoidable now) like Emerald's Battle Tower dupe for infinite master balls / rare candies or Colo's infinite ball trick is quite a task!
It was nice getting to catch quite a lot of this live while out with sickness, congrats on getting the video out!

How is it a huge accomplishment? Kids everywhere used to do this...

I cannot fathom the dedication that 10yo me had to achieve the same result (i did use gameshark for the event pokemon - or rather, farmed legendaries to trade with friends that had the gameshark, so I feel no shame). I should still have that save somewhere. This video made me appreciate my childhood in a weird way. Thank you for spending the (ridiculous amount of) time to make this video ❤
Farming legendaries to trade instead of cheating yourself? Damn, you were commited
Also, did you have to play all the games he did? I'm playing emerald on a emulator and have no desire to go out of the mainline games
@@youtub-fj8mu well, everything was on official hardware, no emulators involved. I did not own a gamecube nor any colosseum game and I believe they were used here mostly to speed up the process, but some game lending and trading with friends that had it was necessary - that's how I got my Ho-oh. So many shinies were exchanged, including a horsea! Tbh I don't remember too well after 20y but I remember making a point of having a legit no exploit living dex.
I love how you fully commit to these, and I especially get a kick out of when you go on a detour to play a completely different game for a while
As someone who also did this myself, I can say that Colosseum and XD cut out an ENORMOUS time in this. And it's really simple to run these games on a Wii, if you don't care about playing on 100% retail copies. Then the main hassle is just needing LeafGreen for Slowpoke, deciding if you're gonna use glitches or not for Deoxys, and getting Celebi, which needs the japanese games.
The sister just replying "that was a bad hack" took me out lmao idk why I found that part so funny.

Me who's done a Shiny Living Dex in SV: 👀
National living dex* regional living Dex isn't too hard and is actually pretty fun
Not so hard nowadays, just finding the box space is the hard part.
Especially not in Home, trying to get all Gen specific badges.
I can only agree. Did it in Shield, it broke me when the 2nd DLC came out (I ran out of space)
I also lost a Blaziken (and a Latias) to the failed cloning glitch so I understand your pain. Great vid!
I remember absolutely destroying my screen with my stylus while playing Pokémon ranger.
Oh my god do i remember the rage that rayquaza caused me lol, and yeah charizard was a pain.
That Steelix was pain...something like 30 loops for such a bulky mon...
i lost my save data for ranger while i was almost at the end and i don't think i will EVER touch that game again. i was fortunate enough to be playing on an emulator so i could easily load up the fights again,, but that didn't stop charizard from kicking my ass for an hour straight. it doesn't help that you have to fight him AGAIN later on. i cant imagine fighting the beasts, even if i have my little cheat saves
That shiny horsea with the dragon scale was insane. And that bit at the end. "Go home." I think I died laughing 🤣
pokemon channel was a formative part of my childhood and im not ashamed of it, even if i should be
playing through saphire rn with my childhood game on my game boy advance. Lots of nostalgia, but sad i cannot get all the pokemon you did! happy to run into this video
Lol the TV interviewer was made depressed, I never laughed so hard "Go home."
Emerald is my favorite main series game - but I've only ever played it casually, so I had no idea how DEEP everything went into this. Thank you for doing this so we don't have to!
Theys a reason why the Japanese version never used the catch em all tag line and why gen four would drop it completely
I don’t really have a comfort show or food, I just watch these videos of yours. Pokémon was such a huge part of my childhood and every couple of years I find myself replaying one of the games. I think I’m past due for a play through now 🤣 thanks for making these videos!
Thank you John for providing entertainment and good luck. I watched this video probably 4 times while shiny hunting Mewtwo in fire red and I finally got it at 3347 encounters!
I remember attempting to do this back around 2018. Bought all I needed too but never had the time/drive to commit to it. Thank you for completing this. I’ve always wanted to see it.
I’ve completed the National Dex for every generation 4-8, but I’m NEVER completing a Gen 3 National Dex or my bank account will never recover 😂
if you're cool with hacking a wii and ripping an iso off a game you own, you can buy a japanese pokemon box for a fraction of the price and patch the ripped iso off of that.
Emerald is my favorite pokemon game by far and I love battling the TV crew and then giving nonsense responses. Great video as always!!
Can't wait to see more videos! Love your content!!! I think I die of happiness every time you put on the fishing gear for fishing time, doesn't stop being funny
Man. This video made me so nostalgic. Gens 1-4 (mostly 1-3) were my childhood. Respect and grass dude.
Guns 1-3 are forever goated
The fact that you need to play colosseum for this challenge makes it infinitely better. I not only love gen 3 hoenn games but pokemon colosseum was the first pokemon game i ever olayed and has remained my favorite ever since.
I dont think id ever trust Nintendo enough to store my whole pokedex on Home. They axe too many things and drop support etc
@@James26285 Plus since they've begun deleting pokemon from the mainline games instead of just making it so you can't find them in the wild since the switch gens, Home is basically an extortion scheme.
You're such a good storyteller.. I'm literally zoned in every video. One of one man, i love your stuff!
i actually went to that pokemon rocks america event in atlanta back in 2004! it was DEFINITELY a strange place to host it but it was still really fun. i remember getting the aurora ticket and taking a pic with a treecko mascot suiter, and my friend got to go on stage and do karaoke. it's cool seeing a direct mention of it here =) this was a crazy endeavor and SUPER impressive getting it all done in so little time!
Not choosing torchic is a crime.
This easily became my favorite of Johnstone's videos. There are some parts in the video that are genuinely hysterical; John's luck is actually crazy sometimes!
Alternative Title: Johnstone flexes how much money and free time he has
It's not free time if you're doing it as a job as a youtuber. There's a reason why normal people don't do living dexs, and why youtubers do. Try and figure out why
@@heyhackurs really??? I never knew, so like UA-camrs make money from this??!?!? 🙄

For those that still want a complex Dex of gen 3 there exist ROMs where in LFRF you can catch all pokemons as well as RS. Of course it's not a 100% legit way to do it. But all it takes is a phone or computer and to download the ROM as well as the Emulator.
This was the best UA-cam video I have watched in years. I never wanted this video to be over. I love how you kept track of how much it cost and all the tricks about switching between games and special codes. Masterclass video.
"Go Home" is so unnecessarily Savage and I love it!!
Short of just getting on reddit and begging anyone who has a real one to mail me a cartirdge, meet up in real life, or find one on ebay for a billion dollars, I am not sure how to go about LEGIT completing this
@@Bittls that was the aforementioned good fortune - I was going to a lot of local conventions at the time and met some folk who were willing to trade thir childhood event pokemon. It was really lucky! The chance is definitely a lot smaller these days, since I did those trades in 2015/16, but you may still have luck if you go to a Pokemon competition or the like, especially if you ask around online first. Wishing you all the best!!!!!!
It's quite fitting that Mew was your final caught pokemon. 🙂
It´s so refreshing to see people put love and effort into playing pokemon, it´s something you barely see nowadays with how toxic the online community tends to be, subbed
Huge shoutout to the editing! The video is really well made and just genuinely fun to watch! I had an amazing time :)
I am attempting this challenge on this channel, and I learned some new things about how to make this process easier.
Thank you Johnstone for paving the way for others to try this ridiculous quest! 😊
Congrats, John! I'm working on the same thing. I've spent $600 on rebuying Emerald, Colosseum, and XD and modding my GBA. This task is not for the faint of heart if you don't already have all the games.
That's dedication. I hope you succeed.
Minus the Gamecube titles, my lord am I glad to have gotten the GBA games second hand within 5 years after their release, like Black and White were the new games at the time.
Learning how to Picoboot a GameCube will save you a lot of time and money
I was diggin for my DS when I came across my mums Nintendo ds lite from the early 2000s, she had a copy of emerald and platinum. So I've started play emerald! I'm loving it!
I'm so glad that emerald has some videos still on it cause I've gotten lost so many times 😅
Bro Sapphire was my first introduction to the Pokémon world. Watching you play this makes me reminisce about my younger days of playing Pokémon nonstop. I even had the Pokémon Kanto region book of all the species and tips! I miss the GBA Advance/SP days.

That shiny horsea holding a dragon scale tho, insane luck
Whew, glad I never seriously tried to complete a Pokedex as a kid! This is absolutely insane :o
Having done this myself, I *hate* Colosseum with every fiber of my being. Really glad I could use an emulator and avoid Nintendo's scummy monetization practices during Gen 3.
not just gen 3, its now a modern staple of the series
The "Go Home" bit had me dying
And people thought Dexit in Sword and Shield was bad
Different, this gen had all the code, shit and piss (Sword and Shield ) did not.
As someone who has been trying to complete the Pokemon Home National Dex (so basically all 1025 mons), I salute you. This definitely looks a lot harder to do than that.
...though now let's see you go for all 1025. ;D
now do a living dex in pokemon go. it will take you years. 😂
loved the video man, Emerald was always my favorite.
You can catch them all with just 5 games. You don’t need to whip out the GameCube
Congrats on completing your Emerald Pokédex!!! I SALUTE YOU!!!!
I'm working on this too! Oh, wait... I'M DOING THIS 10 FREAKIN TIMES!!!!! I'M TRYING TO COMPLETE MY POKéDEX FOR RUBY, SAPPHIRE, EMERALD, FIRERED, AND LEAFGREEN TWICE!!!! YES, I'M PLAYING TWO INSTANCES OF THE GBA POKéMON GAMES AND TRYING TO COMPLETE MY POKéDEX FOR ALL OF THEM!!!! Pokémon is a full time job! Hey wait! What the heck am I doing playing Wario Land 3 Master Quest!? I gotta get back to Emerald and get the last 13 Pokémon in the Hoenn Pokédex so I can get my Johto Starter! AND THEY'RE ALL EVOLUTIONS!!!!
The TRAINER replied, "GO HOME."
51:38 makes alot of sense now
Another great video Johnstone! Would love to see you do this again for more games!
