I really feel there is something to be said about how the hardest challenge, the big #1, took 151 tries. something with 151 tries and the fact of gen 1's pokedex count, I'm just not as smart as Jan so I've got nothing.
The original 151 is where pokemon started and attempt 151 is where Emerald Kaizo ended. Making it a very poetic and thematically appropriate conclusion. To be a Pokemon Master is Jan's destiny.
This is my personal opinion but I hate when he calls himself the best nuzlocker but people have beaten him in this emerald kaizo challenge multiple times

All things considered, I find it intensely poetic that Emerald Kaizo was finally put to rest on Run 151, precisely the number of Pokémon in the original Pokédex. Incredible job, Jan, can’t wait to see what the future holds!
His plan was to wait long enough so everyone who watched it live completely forgot it by the time the video goes up. Now we can experience it a second time. It's a pro gamer move that only the best nuzlocker in the world would even think of doing.
I would never ever beat this but I love the sheer amount of strategy you need to beat this game. You had to literally plan for the elite 4 from the minute you started the campaign.

Severe flooding alert ! The entire world is now a ocean." 58:43 "Someone maliciously manipulating their team stats to cheat would probably give this viable IVs."
@@alandtic4616 some person claiming as nuzlocke judge or something accused him of cheating the slowbro coz he maybe randomised the IVs of nurse Ya it's really childish
@@strawberrijam3676 28:58 is a reference to the Jaiden Animations and Alpharad Soul Link Nuzlocke: Alpharad ordered food sometime during the Team Rocket Raid in their Heart Gold and Soul Silver runs, and was eating a chicken sandwich when he lost a Pokémon to the Earthquake-on-Dig attack boost, because he wasn’t paying attention to the moves he was using.
This challenge completely changed the way everyone thought about nuzlockes. It made all of us better and few know the enjoyment of finally seeing success in this sort of game where you feel hopeless in many situations. Congrats Jan, you’re an inspiration to all of us
Jan legit got me to Nuzlocke the main games. I was already a huge fan of routing, but Nuzlockes added a new layer that is so much fun(I did a Hilarious thing where I delayed my route 113 encounter for after Aqua Hideout because I really wanted Skarmory, so my plan was Aqua Hideout, catch an Electrode, go to New Mauville and catch my ensured Magnemite, pray it had Magnet Pull, which it did, and go to 113 with Magneton as the lead to raise my chance to get Skarm up to 50%. It was all for naught because I still got spooked by Spinda)
"Dusclops... show him your true power." With not a hint of irony in his voice. At this point, I knew Jan had officially become a Pokemon anime character. (Completely deserved, too, that last battle was intense.) Needless to say, this is by far his best video. It's a masterpiece. Every second was compelling. I especially loved the narrative switches between his super even-toned narration and his super passionate ingame dialogue, haha.
These kind of videos are really what youtube is about for me, the sheer dedication, passion, and entertainment that are exuded in vast amounts here are amazing. Its been a year since it was uploaded, and I just came across it, but this is the kind of video that genuinly catapults someone upwards, snd from what I’m getting across your other videos you deserve it man. Congrats and sticking around to see you grow further
To everyone experiencing this for the first time on youtube, I cannot stress this enough. Watching the elite 4 of attempt 151 live as it was happening was the ABSOLUTE BEST experience I've every had on Twitch. It was So. Unbelievably. Intense. especially after he lost Ludicolo to Glacia. We now know after the fact that he would win but he could've easily lost it all and that uncertainty made for some movie-grade dramatic tension watching it live.
Twitch Plays Pokemon was like that too. When it was over, I felt like the Truman Show had gone off the air, and I didn't know what to do with myself. I'd had it running every minute I was home for over a week. I played Pokemon Silver on the side while it all went down. Definitely a once in a lifetime experience. They tried to recreate it with attempts at other versions, but it was never quite the same as when there were 121,000 people playing the same game of Pokemon online, all at the same time.
i'm late to this comment, but the reason i like his reaction so much is because he's usually the "serious and calculated" poketuber, but he's as happy as every everyone else would be for a regular nuzlocke. just hearing him so happy to beat something is really amazing.
Just found your vids. I'm 34 man. Watching you play these old games so well and with the challenges that they present brings my inner child so much joy that you couldn't even imagine. Pokemon was such a huge part of my happiness as a kid. Keep doing what you do brother.
I love how he's explaining how he went about this. What he needed to catch, how to go about each boss fight, etc. Makes understanding Nuzlockes easier. Wish more nuzlockers would do this.
For real. The amount of strategizing ran so deep, even with people to explain the AI, and being familiar with ranges and crits. I had no idea about the Self Destruct disabled on last pokemon thing. Or the Intimidate swapping strat. Or the amount of route planning to catch water pokemon in the second half. I would have been completely lost without even half the explanations.
That fact that he won on attempt 151 is proof that it was destiny. What an absolute legendary event. Seeing chat just fucking lag til it crashes from messages is awesome.
Jan: Pokémon are tools to be used to get the win, they are pieces of code to be expended. Also Jan: No... It won't happen again. I won't let you die Bartender.
This video as a whole was really well put together and worth the watch in it's entirety. Feels a lot like the movie "The Big Short" when you get other youtubers to explain mechanics. Well done
I have no idea why, but this has become my comfort video. I’ve rewatched it more than I would care to admit. It’s just so well executed being a well paced, dynamic, interesting, passionate with a touch of humor, thought out video. It’s no secret that Jan is a ridiculously dedicated dude but this brought it to a new level. This video feels like an incredibly fascinating and encompassing movie with a documentary touch. Amazing video and huge props to everyone who worked on it, the time it must’ve taken to make this definitely payed off.
watching this again after throwing my own run in vanilla emerald and am just enamored with the amount of preparation and dedication not just in the run but in making this video, definitely the best nuzlocke video of all time
I agree 100%. I've watched this video in full at least 20 times. Sometimes I just watch the Elite Four also. Sometimes I just put it on in the background. It's so well made and has everything you want in a video like this. Well explained, funny, entertaining and having seen the pair video to this "I've failed this Nuzlocke 150 times. Here's how" seeing the triumph of run 151 is just so amazing. This is probably in my top 10 favorite videos on YT ever.
The “RIP” Team: Bartender the Ludicolo (Died to another Glacia crit, however PC didn’t get flattened) Historian the Relicanth (Died to missing a 1/16 range on Dragonite) Mailman the Salamence (Had to be sacked to Drake’s Mence) Moderator the Wobbuffet (Needed safe switch to Exorcist, so sacd to Deoxys) Exorcist the Dusclops (Sacrificed to put Jirachi in Flamethrower range) Pilot the Swellow (Died to PC not realizing Thunder hits Pokemon that used Fly) Basically the Elite 4 team replacing Slowbro with Swellow
@@taichiJUST I was basing it off of the text “1/16 chance Dragonite survives”, so yeah technically its a 15/16 range to kill, I did the range to not kill :/

I've seen this video literally more than 10 times. The story is amazing... it's hard to come by a youtube video with a rich rewatchability. Awesome job
17:05 I think the gimmick is that it is meant to pull you into a false sense of security. You see the ai being out a mon with a type disadvantage you might feel compelled to leave yours in rather than switch out. This allows the ai to get off a super effective move possibly either fainting your mon or simply dealing massive damage. Thing is though is that they should’ve also coded in that this switch only happens if the ais Pokémon is faster than the one the player has out. Or if the move in question is a priority move. Cause if it’s slower, then the ai loses a Pokémon fairly unceremoniously
Emerald AI explanation timestamps: 00:05:49 WolfeyVGC explains how the enemy chooses their moves 00:15:51 JaidenAnimations explains how the AI chooses the next mon 00:24:00 TierZoo explains how the AI chooses the next mon if there's more problems 00:55:50 WolfeyVGC explains the one case the AI will absolutely sometimes switch their mon
This is without a doubt, the most intense Pokémon nuzlocke I’ve ever witnessed. Absolutely insane dude. Even though I’m late to the party, congratulations. That was so awe-inspiring and fun to watch. Pokémon rules. No matter how you play, who you are or what age. Subscribed.
“I must have been eating a chicken sandwich when planning for this fight or something” MAN REALLY DID ALPHARAD DIRTY 😂 (For those who don’t know, one of Alpharad’s Pokémon died in a nuzlock due to him not paying attention because he was eating a chicken sandwich)
God, revisiting this, I got to say that I can not believe the work that put into overcoming this Elite 4. Every step is overwhelmingly delicate and immaculately planned…and then to have it all go up in flames and to still defeat Steven with 3 mons?! Overwhelmingly legendary
@@duskpede5146 Those slowbro IV’s mattered less than the Ludicolo’s for the elite four / champion at any point in the run that he would have had a chance to change things off stream, it’s very unlikely that he cheated, and if he did he didn’t even cheat well
Mew giving Arkoos the finger by controlling the RNG in some cases. Mew, the eternal pokemon troll. Mew, the OG pokemon God. Mew traveled with Jan through this journey.
Just 30 minutes in but I love how the Swellow is like a queen in chess. He's really strong, but one wrong move with any fight and he's gone. The literal definition of a glass cannon.
I mean, that's kinda true of every piece in chess. Like, yeah, pawns are more expendable than queens, but losing a pawn to an error can still cost you the game.
it wouldve been quite boring, since the entirety of sidney, half of phoebe and some of drake wouldve been swept. Also the panic on sableye wouldnt have been a thing
I think the AI logic in the weaker type chosing explained at the 17th minute is that if you play in the switch mode and you have a bulbasaur and see that the enemy is sending a squirtle, you will not the change your Pokémon because you have the advantage type but for the AI it’s good because they have exactly the response for that (ice beam) and normally playing blind you’ll don’t know that. But if they sent a charmander, you’ll problaly switch and make it a lottery for the AI
It really is impressive, I know its literally his work but even at that it takes some amount of perseverance! also speaking of kanto pokedex am i the only one who's confused as to why you can catch gastly and misdrevous with a fishing rod 😂
@@DuskLegend It's cheating in the same sense that counting cards in blackjack is; it's solving a math problem to give you the best chance of winning. Might be out of the spirit of the game, but it depends where you are and who you're playing with. In this case, the gauntlet set up is so nuts, and homeboy is only playing against himself, so IMO he can make the rules. It's not like the game is perfectly solved either ("solved" meaning a player can force a win - Connect 4 is a solved game; if you let me go first and I play the middle column, I can always beat you, no matter where you play.) He has to adapt and re-optimize his strategy based on random encounters, and he had some close calls and slip-ups. Reminds me of a video I saw about this controversial golfer named Bryson DeChambeau; he has a physics and a math degree and boy he _uses_ them -- but he takes fucking ages on the green because he's pulling out the goddamn astrolabe to validate the accuracy of course map geometry. I personally think that it takes people like that to advance excellence in the sport, but it would be annoying to play with someone like that in a casual context.
Definitely against the spirit of the challenge. You're not supposed to be able to grind until you catch what you want, you're supposed to get what you're given and deal with that. This trick makes the outcome the same as if the challenge wasn't there.
@@DuskLegend the duplicate clause was made to prevent people from having like 5 rattatas or 5 pidgeys due to bad luck with encounters. He's essentially exploiting the rule but not really breaking any others.
@@meepmeep3874 to be fair, when you’re dealing with this challenge especially, you need to do this to guarantee encounters that make certain strategies consistent so you’re not playing the same thing over and over and over again. Especially in an already RNG heavy run, adding many unnecessary potentially run killing rng checks make the game so much more annoying.
Jan saying “I think the next big challenge is just around the corner.” Combined with Suicine at the end makes me think he’s gonna nuzlocke Crystal Kaizo.
the sheer JOY in his voice when finishing the game legit put tears in my eyes.the sheer knowledge and skill needed for this is immense, and honestly im just honoured to be able to witness it. good job, man.
Yknow I used to think “greatest Pokémon nuzlocker” was just an ego boost for you. Then I watched this video… you are without a doubt the greatest Pokémon nuzlocker
You can think of it like this, who is the alternative? I'm not particularly involved in the pokemon community. However, to the best my knowledge, he is the only person that has made Nuzlocking is career. Is there a chance that there is some guy over in Japan we don't know about or that there is some guy that just plays hardcore Nuzlockes all day at home without posting anything? Sure, it's possible, however, it's incredibly unlikely.
@@SondreGrneng There was someone who beat Emerald Kaizo before him, in fewer attempts, with the exact same rules. They possibly could've gotten better RNG or something, just saying there are other people out there at a similar level. But yes, from what I can tell Pokemon Challenges is the only high-profile individual who makes content out of his playthroughs
This was so deserved in every aspect and shit like this is inspirational. You played this dumb ass game for pretty much a year, learning, adapting, raging and restarting on this game over and over and over again....150 times and on 151 you used all that knowledge and skill and admittedly astounding luck to beat this game. You have officially gained all my respect and I just wish I could've been there to see this.
Hmmmm, steel beam integrity, the self destruct around Hoenn… curious, Jan. Congrats on finally wrapping up the Emerald Kaizo story! Looking forward to Platinum Kaizo someday ;D

I joined somewhere around attempt 40, if I remember correctly. He was fighting Maxie and made some sacrifice during the fight and won, and the chat was going insane. I didn't even know who Jan was at the time, but that was all I needed to see to know I was in on whatever "Emerald Kaizo" was. I also caught the last fight of the 151st run live.
I’ve been rewatching yours and alpharad’s rivalry and react videos back to back over the past week, so that Chicken Sandwich comment about Pidgeot and Fly had me dead! So sneakily added, well played. And well played on the run! Amazing!
I remember when his videos were literally just exactly what he had on Twitch but WITHOUT the chat. You couldn't even see the chat, and yet he'd spend half of the time just responding the things that the chat said lol. I honestly only subscribed because the video I saw was a Pokemon tier list and I like Pokemon tier lists. But, hey, I was subbed before his first Jaiden Animations nuzlocke reaction so I guess that makes me an OG or something
I never realized how intense the Elite 4 theme is. When I was younger, I used to over level my pokemon when entering the the Pokémon league so I never really struggled but seeing what Jan does on Emerald Kaizo shows the intensity of the battles.
1:23:30 "i'll never have to see this fucking game again!!" > look at recommended videos sidebar > "how the hardest pokemon game was beaten deathless" > pokemon kaizo version in the thumbnail LOL

As I was watching the Drake fight all I could think was how in the world were you going to win the final battle with such a small team...! Then I saw how and was astounded. Good job man I know this hack was NOT easy.

3rd time watching this vid and finally caught the pkmn opening line "no time to question my moves, I stick to the path that I choose" after swellow faints, just beautiful
This video was totally worth the wait, what an emotional roller coaster. Even despite losing Ludi early, even despite going into Steven with just 3 mons, it still all came together just right. Moderator taking out the Mewtwo, Exorcist taking out Deoxys, and Nurse taking out the Jirachi felt like poetic justice.
Me before the video: "heh, I'll nuzlocke kaizo and show this guy it ain't shit" Me not even halfway through the video: "this guy knows literally everything and is calculating encounters and even sacrificing mons to a perfect degree, I am an arrogant moron and should be ashamed for thinking otherwise."
I’ve watched this video, no, this MOVIE multiple times now, and it’s just as fantastic every time. His reaction at the end is so genuine it almost makes me tear up. And the way he says “I’ll never have to see this fucking game again” you can just tell that he is so happy
Absolutely legendary video. I’m still proud of the man for being SO persistent and SO resilient for being able to bounce back after many resets over wack encounters, losing to random optionals, or even right on the cusp of victory but coming up short against drake. I think many other people in the nuzlocke community would have just lost a run and gave up and more than likely not come back, I for one am one of those people. I wish I had the fortitude and the patience he has to continue going until he won. This victory has to be one of the best moments throughout the entire Pokemon community. It’s crazy how much you can manipulate a damn kids game into one of the biggest challenges for any adult and its also crazy how much it can bring people together to experience these ecstasy-filled moments.

I like to imagine that the Emerald AI sends out the weaker pokemon compared to your current pokemon’s type to lower your guard. I have a Torterra. They send out a Floatzel. I expect to kill it easily, and don’t switch out, Floatzel outspeeds and kills my Torterra with a surprise Ice Beam.
@@MrPsyren99 well it could be just wording choice, the term outspeed is very commonly used in the topic of Pokemon, very common, very little people say “this pokemon was faster”
Except then it should be choosing using the speed stat, not the weakest typing. As it stands, it's they could just as well send a Whiscash because it has Ice Beam as well and is weaker to grass than Floatzel. Your Torterra just murders it because it's slightly faster thanks to better IVs and EVs.
I have been binging a lot of your content lately, and I wanted to say that this has been one of your best videos I have found. Both in the pacing, editing, and story telling. I know you have mentioned how much you want to tell a compelling story like Alpharad and other channels. But, remember you clearly have your own voice in story telling and it is shown here. It told the story of how you can have everything calculated, and you can look like this sherlockian genius, but even the best faulter, and have to pivot. Keep it up.
I don't think I've ever seen this amount of energy used of a human's brain ever. The precision involved is insane, just for a romhack of a kid's game, all while also accepting the fact that you can lose a dozen hours to bad luck, is so respectable. This video definitely deserves to be at least is most viewed video. It really shows all the abilities of Pokémon Challenges on his best performance ever.

They tried to recreate it with attempts at other versions, but it was never quite the same as when there were 121,000 people playing the same game of Pokemon online, all at the same time.
i was watching it live at work and oh my god my coworkers must have been so annoyed but i was into it

Yea it's almost as if he's one of the most experienced Nuzlockers or something..
For real. The amount of strategizing ran so deep, even with people to explain the AI, and being familiar with ranges and crits. I had no idea about the Self Destruct disabled on last pokemon thing.
The AI is already given a ton of advantages compared to you. As if it needed to check out your speed stat as well in order to make the decisions

God tier content. Rewatching is even better than the first time
I think the AI logic in the weaker type chosing explained at the 17th minute is that if you play in the switch mode and you have a bulbasaur and see that the enemy is sending a squirtle, you will not the change your Pokémon because you have the advantage type but for the AI it’s good because they have exactly the response for that (ice beam) and normally playing blind you’ll don’t know that. But if they sent a charmander, you’ll problaly switch and make it a lottery for the AI

it blows my mind how intricate everything is when you run a nuzlock. The tricks to guarantee certain Pokémon encounters is insane!
Seems like cheating lol
Keep it up.
What I love most about his reaction to winning is that he said “we beat this” instead of “I”
That's a pretty normal thing for streamers and youtubers xP
@@peculiarityenjoyer2053 do not cite the deep magic to me, witch. I was there when it was written
Kid’s game? Pokémon is not just a kid’s game lol.
@@OldBenKenobi2318 Yeah I know, but I say it to make it more epic.
@@NoName-wb1er It just makes you sound like an idiot. I'm so tired of it being called a kids game when nowadays the majority of players are adults.
@@OldBenKenobi2318 pokemons target market are children, so it is a kids game, but anyone can enjoy it.
Just found out about 2 months ago that there is a shop in my city that has physical versions of these kaizos and a bunch for N64.
Nice content. Digging the style of the video.

The last vid made with Jan's distinct style befire he switched things up. Both styles have their perks but this one will always be iconic
I love how the last part is just the Gameplay itself with no commentary. Brilliant.
Congratulations again on beating Emerald Kaizo, truly incredible
The only nuzlocke that truly deserves a feature length film runtime
I remember being in the stream for the E4 and this vid really captures how epic and cinematic that part and this run as a whole was. Amazing production value, high stakes, and great humor. Huge props to Jan for beating this behemoth of a game.
It‘s like the third time I Rewatch this Video since it was released. Attempt 151 is like a awesome Movie you want to rewatch from time to time.
Thanks for this Masterpiece
I know he hates these comments, but man even coming back to this almost half a year later even being there in the stream when he finally won still feels so great seeing it play out all over again.

Yooo Spaceuk pp 👀
Why would he hate that..?
yeah bro, I'm sure he appreciates that like a mother fucking ton. plus literally any comment is good for him dude. Thats why i decided to leave one then i read yours
@@timw9745 It's a meme about how Jan says "youtube comments are cringe".
I don't think he actually hates them, I'm almost certain it's just a channel meme.
I just think it’s very poetic that it took 151 tries. It’s like someone finally finding that legendary mew under the truck.
Jan’s emerald kaizo journey completely redefined the nuzlocking scene in a way that encouraged all of us to step up our game to new highs and this was the culmination of that incredible experience
This channel and the highlights channel have become my comfort channels, Love you Jan you got me into trying nuzlockes
