Beautiful wood stove Slim. Grew up heating our Kentucky farmhouse with a similar one, just not as efficient. Love putting a pot of soup beans on the stove and letting it simmer all day. We would use it to cook with if we lost power. soup beans and cornbread made in a wood burning stove, don't get much better than that.
To anyone getting or setting up a stove if possible the pedestal or platform format Slim got is 100% better than just having it on the floor, his came with a built in stand but you can confirm the type of platform( base) required with your inspector. Having it off the ground not only raises the view of your fire but will save your back and knees every time you have to build a fire,add wood, stoke the fire or clean out the ash.And if your code/inspector allows you can use the space below to store wood.
I bought the same stove last year , brand new, cost me a little over 3000 for the stove, wall kit and all the chimney pipe. Burned 3 cords of wood in it and loved every minute of it. Hope you enjoy yours as well.

I've burned wood for 50 years now and know it's hard to regulate the heat so you aren't overheating at the bookends of the heating season. I came across a gadget called a pelleteer, which is a basket that fits inside the stove, allowing the use of wood pellets. As a result I can precisely regulate the heat easily. The heat is less intense than regular wood and more manageable. At this time of year one basket full heats 1000 sqf for the entire day.
@ricebike yes you can control heat with the damper but low temperature burning produces a lot of creosote. Burn temperature for cord wood has a sweet spot where it isn't too low or too high. Pellets are so dried out they can be burned at lower temps. Also a basket of pellets burn for less time than cord wood so there's no long ramp down or coals to keep the stove so hot for so long.

The cabin looks fantastic! It should certainly be a cozy spot to be in for a nice snowstorm with a decked out Christmas tree and sipping some hot chocolate. Such a beautiful setting.
Beautiful wood stove and much more efficient than your old one. We got our soapstone wood stove back in 2000. We chose soapstone because it maintains heat longer and we really needed it for heating our small house. Heating was our main issue and it has served us well over the years. In the town we live in here in Massachusetts, the fire marshal requires the homeowner to have a wood stove professionally installed as the fire marshal watches the process and passes it as soon as it is complete. We paid a combined total of $1,400. for the wood stove and installation. That thing has paid for itself through the years and I love it. We had the chimney cleaned out once and that was just a couple of years ago and the chimney cleaner said that it was creosote free and very clean because I use hardwood and burn it hot. I only use pine for kindling. I'm sure that you are going to love your new wood stove for heating your beautiful little cabin.👍😊

A good stove is everything. For heat, food and comfort. You got it all in this one. A flat top and you can cook on it. Nice to know you will stay comfortable this coming winter Slim!
Glad to see you got woodstove issues fixed. I have a really old stove that I put in: 1890's Hottentot. I hired a local couple to put in a stone stove surround 3 inches away from the plaster and lathe walls with cement board, and I used plain old cement brick pavers from the hardware store for the hearth. I didn't even glue them down because I figured they weren't going anywhere. Then I hired a guy who does nothing but woodstoves who literally showed up in topcoat and tails with a stovepipe hat to install the stainless steel (really expensive, but apparently the best), stovepipe. I was lucky that my chimney was in great shape. There's no heat as wonderful as heat from a woodstove. I suggest using those cement square foot pavers for a hearth, though, because they are quite inexpensive and very safe.

If it is up to the insurance guys you are just allowed to sit up straight and breath. Noting at all wrong with the old one and the way you installed it. However, the new one is a great deal and absolutely gorgeous!
Look into the "top-down" method for starting a fire in a wood stove. It has several significant advantages, including a cleaner burn and less smoke in your home or cabin. You lay out the fire, light it, and don't have to keep opening the door to add more wood. You can literally lay it out, start it, and walk away for a couple of hours while the stove does its job...no need to tend it every few minutes or put big pieces on top of smaller pieces.
@@SlimPotatohead - That's interesting. I can't imagine how or why it wouldn't work, but if you've tried it and it doesn't work for you, that's all that matters. I use that method exclusively and it works great every time, no matter what would I've used. You're the only person I've talked to who said it doesn't work for certain types of wood. Once you get a fire going, it doesn't make any difference, obviously.
Pity the old stove had to go, it had character! The new one looks even better with the glass front and without the shield at the back and it is facing the right way!
An almost new, efficient and a great looking stove that you hooked up by yourself. The cost is not that much when compared to it being safe and easy to operate. I removed the slate tiles that lined the bathroom wall around the tub when I remodeled. They would look great on the floor rather than the expensive mats. I'm still trying to figure out how I'll use them. Like any house or cabin, its a lifetime project trying to improve and make comfy the environment. Enjoy the journey!

I worked in a HardWareStore for many years and sold a lot of wood and oil stoves. People were always asking me how to install them. Our lawyer said the answer had to be "You cannot install the stove without a Permit and then an approval from the State inspector". And also I always added that whatever makes your insurance company happy is what you need to do. Read the directions that come with the stove, it will tell you to get the stove professionally installed or at least get the Permit and work on it until you get the final approval from the inspector for the State. So glad to hear you (at about 16:00) say those things. I would not ever want to be the cause of loss of property or life.

Great job, Slim, and kudos for getting a used one! A couple of anecdotes... My stepdad bought a house that was almost completed, on the Oregon Coast, had an addition built on for a family room and upper loft. They had a wood stove installed as part of the construction, and had a 12 inch flue put in at the corner of the room where it connected to the rest of the house, with a fan at the bottom and a thermostat at the top. When it got to 68 degrees at the top, the fan kicked on and pulled the heat from the top of the room and distributed it into the ground floor level; it worked great to keep things warm. The wife and I bought a 1/4 share of a "cabin" in the woods; it's actually a park-model RV with a bonus room installed as the living room. That room has a propane-powered Franklin stove - much like a wood stove in there, but the propane stove is on a thermostat, and we leave it at 50 degrees when unoccupied to keep the pipes from freezing (there's also a propane furnace, but the stove is nice when the power goes off because it maintains the temperature). The gas flame isn't quite as nice as a wood stove, but it's definitely a lot less work.

Nice looking stove. I have the double wall extendable stove pipe, too. It can get harder to slide as it gets used and dirty - I find that if you put three metal screws in the top joint that will hold it still so you can grip the pipe and pull down to set it over the section below. Expandable section makes it easier to dismantle for cleaning, too. On the subject of free wood try stopping by a truss builders - they have a high amount of wastage in the manufacturing process and most have a bin outside for people to take it away for free - often of a size you can build small projects with, too. I have one near me in NS and used to have close by when I lived in NB, too. A bit far from you, though, but hopefully there’s one around you somewhere. 👍🏻

I live in an old house in Saskatchewan. I've been wanting to add a wood stove ever since I moved here. I appreciate all the information you provided here, especially as regards what's insurable and roughly what it will cost. I'd been dreaming about getting an old parlour stove, but I doubt very much it would be insurable.

Slim, when I had a wood burner at my old house, I used cutoff two by fours to split for kindling. I split them into pieces about one inch square, and had them ready to go in a basket for whenever I wanted to make a fire. They were great fire starters along with pine cones from my white pine tree!
That is a good deal, Slim, and it looks right at home in the cabin. I miss having wood heat. Nothing like cozying up beside the stove on a cold morning with a cup of tea and a good book.
Just so you know, they do make a boot that fits around the chimney pipe on the roof used for metal roofs to prevent leaks. One was installed when they put the metal roof on my house.

Good morning Slim! That appears to be a nicer setup than before ... and, safer. At my old place (before I bought it), the wood stove was grabbed by neighbours. Those neighbours can't get insurance. The neighbours also hide from the fire department inspectors when they come knocking. When I lived in Toronto, there was a furniture manufacturer that would leave end pieces at the road in large bins. The best burning wood because it had already been dried but before anything else had been done to treat the wood. It was a popular place for campers, like bears at a garbage dump ;-)

Im 82, downsized 20 yrs ago to 1946 Cottage, w basement, needed lots TLC. Wish could have wood stove. Miss my Heatalater insert real brick fireplace, but State outlawed wood burners yrs ago. The new stove is quite an upgrade in all aspects. I'd guess it's much more efficient. Seasoned pine is fine. If my memory serves me, it burns hotter but quicker. I used to use it to get things going, then add hardwood to extend burn time.
Just discovered your channel. Congrats on the new fireplace. Youre actually lucky somebody used it before you as the paint smell should be gone. I know the stainless pipe can get pricey but it DOES look good. The way these things are designed nowadays is really amazing. So much science involved. They are kinda like a catalytic converter on your car. Air is burned twice or more before exausted. Good choice too. Good luck. 🙏❤😊
On our ranch 1974 we didn't know how to properly use a wood stove and it was a near disaster. The 8 or 10" ( don't recall size) pipe on roof top only had a Small inch like opening when we serviced it in spring. Totally Dangerous!!! We were burning oak wood - didn't think creosote would be an issue - wrong. The stove salesman said start the fire and let it burn to Very Hot ( use pipe thermometer) for awhile as this helps prevent any build up in pipe. I realize your aware of all the dangers however many of your subs may be new to wood stoves & it may save a near disaster for someone. I grew up using a wood stove on the farm However that was not like the air tight wood stoves of today. Love wood & pellet stoves - which is what I now have. Sorry for the rant 😅

We used a ceiling fan with a wood burning stove to distribute the heat we were always comfy. Winter fan to be clockwise to pull air up and circulate warm air. We always kept a big pot of water on the top of the stove for moisture and never got sick. Soon as that pot dried out we were dry.😅
Another correction. It's not a "wood stove" (it's actually a metal stove). It's a "wood burning stove". I had to say it. We had a Vermont casting and we would get about 10 full cords each year for free (construction) from demoing trees and would split it by hand (elm was killer to split). The house was toasty all winter but when it dropped below zero Farenheit I was throwing wood in like the stove was a huge wood vacuum cleaner! Every hour I got up to feed it. You are particular! We have enjoyed watching you for probably seven years and this is one e reason why we keep watching. You are very original and entertaining. Why travel with such a cozy cabin? Also, trailer ideas- A Trail Manor? Low profile and better mpg. That stove you bought is 1000x better than the old antique you had. Stay warm!
We too used to have a Vermont Casting stove... it WAS pretty but, Yea... not so efficient. We now have a Jotul with a nice glass front. This one is SO much more EFFICIENT... quite pricy but a great investment. 👍 Watching the flame is typically way better than what's on TV. 🪵 🔥 😊

I "was" going to put in a wood stove certified for mobile homes but.... the cost for the plumbing (chimney/flue) is expensive. Then the is the house insurance hike as well. So... will just use my parents 1980's Robinson kerosene heater during power outages. Or rig up a back-up power connection to plug it into my big "NOISY" gas generator. Slim just "LOVES" those gas generators!!

I removed the slate tiles that lined the bathroom wall around the tub when I remodeled. They would look great on the floor rather than the expensive mats. I'm still trying to figure out how I'll use them. Like any house or cabin, its a lifetime project trying to improve and make comfy the environment. Enjoy the journey!

I worked in a HardWareStore for many years and sold a lot of wood and oil stoves. People were always asking me how to install them. Our lawyer said the answer had to be "You cannot install the stove without a Permit and then an approval from the State inspector". And also I always added that whatever makes your insurance company happy is what you need to do. Read the directions that come with the stove, it will tell you to get the stove professionally installed or at least get the Permit and work on it until you get the final approval from the inspector for the State. So glad to hear you (at about 16:00) say those things. I would not ever want to be the cause of loss of property or life.
That is a gorgeous stove! It might have been an investment but it also tics tons of boxes. Well done. That's what I love about your channel. Yes, you endeavor to "get er done" as we say in my parts but you approach the work with love and mindfulness, not fear and anxiety. Much needed in today's world. 🙏
Great job, Slim, and kudos for getting a used one! A couple of anecdotes...
My stepdad bought a house that was almost completed, on the Oregon Coast, had an addition built on for a family room and upper loft. They had a wood stove installed as part of the construction, and had a 12 inch flue put in at the corner of the room where it connected to the rest of the house, with a fan at the bottom and a thermostat at the top. When it got to 68 degrees at the top, the fan kicked on and pulled the heat from the top of the room and distributed it into the ground floor level; it worked great to keep things warm.
The wife and I bought a 1/4 share of a "cabin" in the woods; it's actually a park-model RV with a bonus room installed as the living room. That room has a propane-powered Franklin stove - much like a wood stove in there, but the propane stove is on a thermostat, and we leave it at 50 degrees when unoccupied to keep the pipes from freezing (there's also a propane furnace, but the stove is nice when the power goes off because it maintains the temperature). The gas flame isn't quite as nice as a wood stove, but it's definitely a lot less work.

Nice looking stove. I have the double wall extendable stove pipe, too. It can get harder to slide as it gets used and dirty - I find that if you put three metal screws in the top joint that will hold it still so you can grip the pipe and pull down to set it over the section below. Expandable section makes it easier to dismantle for cleaning, too. On the subject of free wood try stopping by a truss builders - they have a high amount of wastage in the manufacturing process and most have a bin outside for people to take it away for free - often of a size you can build small projects with, too. I have one near me in NS and used to have close by when I lived in NB, too. A bit far from you, though, but hopefully there’s one around you somewhere. 👍🏻

But after watching all your fix up videos I realize that there are steps I should have taken the first time instead of trying to correct them many years later. I live in an old house in Saskatchewan. I've been wanting to add a wood stove ever since I moved here. I appreciate all the information you provided here, especially as regards what's insurable and roughly what it will cost. I'd been dreaming about getting an old parlour stove, but I doubt very much it would be insurable.

Slim, when I had a wood burner at my old house, I used cutoff two by fours to split for kindling. I split them into pieces about one inch square, and had them ready to go in a basket for whenever I wanted to make a fire. They were great fire starters along with pine cones from my white pine tree!
That is a good deal, Slim, and it looks right at home in the cabin. I miss having wood heat. Nothing like cozying up beside the stove on a cold morning with a cup of tea and a good book.
Just so you know, they do make a boot that fits around the chimney pipe on the roof used for metal roofs to prevent leaks. One was installed when they put the metal roof on my house.

Good morning Slim! That appears to be a nicer setup than before ... and, safer. At my old place (before I bought it), the wood stove was grabbed by neighbours. Those neighbours can't get insurance. The neighbours also hide from the fire department inspectors when they come knocking.
When I lived in Toronto, there was a furniture manufacturer that would leave end pieces at the road in large bins. The best burning wood because it had already been dried but before anything else had been done to treat the wood. It was a popular place for campers, like bears at a garbage dump ;-)

Im 82, downsized 20 yrs ago to 1946 Cottage, w basement, needed lots TLC. Wish could have wood stove. Miss my Heatalater insert real brick fireplace, but State outlawed wood burners yrs ago. The new stove is quite an upgrade in all aspects. I'd guess it's much more efficient. Seasoned pine is fine. If my memory serves me, it burns hotter but quicker. I used to use it to get things going, then add hardwood to extend burn time.

Just discovered your channel. Congrats on the new fireplace. Youre actually lucky somebody used it before you as the paint smell should be gone. I know the stainless pipe can get pricey but it DOES look good. The way these things are designed nowadays is really amazing. So much science involved. They are kinda like a catalytic converter on your car. Air is burned twice or more before exausted. Good choice too. Good luck. 🙏❤😊

On our ranch 1974 we didn't know how to properly use a wood stove and it was a near disaster. The 8 or 10" ( don't recall size) pipe on roof top only had a Small inch like opening when we serviced it in spring. Totally Dangerous!!!
We were burning oak wood - didn't think creosote would be an issue - wrong.
The stove salesman said start the fire and let it burn to Very Hot ( use pipe thermometer) for awhile as this helps prevent any build up in pipe.
I realize your aware of all the dangers however many of your subs may be new to wood stoves & it may save a near disaster for someone.
I grew up using a wood stove on the farm However that was not like the air tight wood stoves of today. Love wood & pellet stoves - which is what I now have.

We used a ceiling fan with a wood burning stove to distribute the heat we were always comfy. Winter fan to be clockwise to pull air up and circulate warm air. We always kept a big pot of water on the top of the stove for moisture and never got sick. Soon as that pot dried out we were dry.😅

Another correction. It's not a "wood stove" (it's actually a metal stove). It's a "wood burning stove". I had to say it.
We had a Vermont casting and we would get about 10 full cords each year for free (construction) from demoing trees and would split it by hand (elm was killer to split). The house was toasty all winter but when it dropped below zero Farenheit I was throwing wood in like the stove was a huge wood vacuum cleaner! Every hour I got up to feed it.
You are particular! We have enjoyed watching you for probably seven years and this is one e reason why we keep watching. You are very original and entertaining. Why travel with such a cozy cabin? Also, trailer ideas- A Trail Manor? Low profile and better mpg.

We too used to have a Vermont Casting stove... it WAS pretty but, Yea... not so efficient.
We now have a Jotul with a nice glass front. This one is SO much more EFFICIENT... quite pricy but a great investment. 👍 Watching the flame is typically way better than what's on TV. 🪵 🔥 😊

I "was" going to put in a wood stove certified for mobile homes but.... the cost for the plumbing (chimney/flue) is expensive. Then the is the house insurance hike as well.
So... will just use my parents 1980's Robinson kerosene heater during power outages. Or rig up a back-up power connection to plug it into my big "NOISY" gas generator.
