- Before the snow flies I had a WETT (Wood Energy Technology Transfer) inspection done on my cabin wood stove and it failed! So now I needed to start over and replace everything. It cost me a lot, but was it worth it? See the results!

NOTE FROM SLIM: A LOT of repeat comments! Here's the top four answered:
1. WETT Stands for Wood Energy Technology Transfer
2. Seasoned pine is fine to burn, as the new stove has a secondary burn system that greatly reduces creosote build-up. Also note that this is an occasional use cabin.
3. The stove had to be certified FOR INSURANCE purposes. No whining about the government here!
4. New technology wood stoves DO NOT need a damper. Inspectors will tell you not to use one. Don't get mixed up with older wood stove where the heat goes right up the chimney. The regulator controls the air flow between primary and secondary burn.

We burn pine. You just HAVE TO CLEAN THE PIPES OFTEN to prevent build up

You’re lucky even if you paid $1400 for a 2 year old stove. But $600 is a miracle buy. That’s a nice stove.
Slim, an approx 4 by 2 1/2 foot carry-all is great for all sorts of equipment and furniture moving. Just a 3/4 inch plywood sheet with 4-inch rubber-edge castering bearing wheels at each corner, and good scrap carpet on top. I drove my new 500-pound Hitzer stove from my truck, all over my floor during installation, effortlessly.
Gotta love when slim puts on the glasses and talks numbers! Always transparent.
Being able to stare at the flames (inside an insured cabin) is priceless! The wood you will be saving will pay it back in multiple (you'd have to cut less wood)

Beautiful wood stove Slim. Grew up heating our Kentucky farmhouse with a similar one, just not as efficient.
Love putting a pot of soup beans on the stove and letting it simmer all day. We would use it to cook with if we lost power. soup beans and cornbread made in a wood burning stove, don't get much better than that.

This is a great video. I learned a lot. What I really appreciate is that you don't use thousands of dollars of expensive tools. I am a minimalist, and your cabin addition was perfect.
Glad to see you got woodstove issues fixed. I have a really old stove that I put in: 1890's Hottentot. I hired a local couple to put in a stone stove surround 3 inches away from the plaster and lathe walls with cement board, and I used plain old cement brick pavers from the hardware store for the hearth. I didn't even glue them down because I figured they weren't going anywhere. Then I hired a guy who does nothing but woodstoves who literally showed up in topcoat and tails with a stovepipe hat to install the stainless steel (really expensive, but apparently the best), stovepipe. I was lucky that my chimney was in great shape. There's no heat as wonderful as heat from a woodstove. I suggest using those cement square foot pavers for a hearth, though, because they are quite inexpensive and very safe.
Watching the way you figure stuff out... it's really inspirational to me. You have an engineer's mind without over-complicating things. Fantastic content, as always!
Beautiful wood stove and much more efficient than your old one. We got our soapstone wood stove back in 2000. We chose soapstone because it maintains heat longer and we really needed it for heating our small house. Heating was our main issue and it has served us well over the years. In the town we live in here in Massachusetts, the fire marshal requires the homeowner to have a wood stove professionally installed as the fire marshal watches the process and passes it as soon as it is complete. We paid a combined total of $1,400. for the wood stove and installation. That thing has paid for itself through the years and I love it. We had the chimney cleaned out once and that was just a couple of years ago and the chimney cleaner said that it was creosote free and very clean because I use hardwood and burn it hot. I only use pine for kindling. I'm sure that you are going to love your new wood stove for heating your beautiful little cabin.👍😊

To anyone getting or setting up a stove if possible the pedestal or platform format Slim got is 100% better than just having it on the floor, his came with a built in stand but you can confirm the type of platform( base) required with your inspector. Having it off the ground not only raises the view of your fire but will save your back and knees every time you have to build a fire,add wood, stoke the fire or clean out the ash.And if your code/inspector allows you can use the space below to store wood.
Great new stove you will probably need to put in smaller pieces of wood in the stove. 😅
Ummm if you didn't notice the old stove had a stand on it also. Every stove does that isn't used in a fireplace. Even potbelly stoves.
I bought the same stove last year , brand new, cost me a little over 3000 for the stove, wall kit and all the chimney pipe. Burned 3 cords of wood in it and loved every minute of it. Hope you enjoy yours as well.

My stepdad bought a house that was almost completed, on the Oregon Coast, had an addition built on for a family room and upper loft. They had a wood stove installed as part of the construction, and had a 12 inch flue put in at the corner of the room where it connected to the rest of the house, with a fan at the bottom and a thermostat at the top. When it got to 68 degrees at the top, the fan kicked on and pulled the heat from the top of the room and distributed it into the ground floor level; it worked great to keep things warm.
The wife and I bought a 1/4 share of a "cabin" in the woods; it's actually a park-model RV with a bonus room installed as the living room. That room has a propane-powered Franklin stove - much like a wood stove in there, but the propane stove is on a thermostat, and we leave it at 50 degrees when unoccupied to keep the pipes from freezing (there's also a propane furnace, but the stove is nice when the power goes off because it maintains the temperature). The gas flame isn't quite as nice as a wood stove, but it's definitely a lot less work.
Pity the old stove had to go, it had character! The new one looks even better with the glass front and without the shield at the back and it is facing the right way!

Look into the "top-down" method for starting a fire in a wood stove. It has several significant advantages, including a cleaner burn and less smoke in your home or cabin. You lay out the fire, light it, and don't have to keep opening the door to add more wood. You can literally lay it out, start it, and walk away for a couple of hours while the stove does its job...no need to tend it every few minutes or put big pieces on top of smaller pieces.
We've been through this before in past videos. It does not work with the wood I use. SP
@@SlimPotatohead - That's interesting. I can't imagine how or why it wouldn't work, but if you've tried it and it doesn't work for you, that's all that matters. I use that method exclusively and it works great every time, no matter what would I've used. You're the only person I've talked to who said it doesn't work for certain types of wood. Once you get a fire going, it doesn't make any difference, obviously.
An almost new, efficient and a great looking stove that you hooked up by yourself. The cost is not that much when compared to it being safe and easy to operate. I removed the slate tiles that lined the bathroom wall around the tub when I remodeled. They would look great on the floor rather than the expensive mats. I'm still trying to figure out how I'll use them. Like any house or cabin, its a lifetime project trying to improve and make comfy the environment. Enjoy the journey!

I've burned wood for 50 years now and know it's hard to regulate the heat so you aren't overheating at the bookends of the heating season. I came across a gadget called a pelleteer, which is a basket that fits inside the stove, allowing the use of wood pellets. As a result I can precisely regulate the heat easily. The heat is less intense than regular wood and more manageable. At this time of year one basket full heats 1000 sqf for the entire day.
Don't you need to pay for the bags of pellets? Slim can burn wood from his own property for free.

@ricebike yes you can control heat with the damper but low temperature burning produces a lot of creosote. Burn temperature for cord wood has a sweet spot where it isn't too low or too high. Pellets are so dried out they can be burned at lower temps. Also a basket of pellets burn for less time than cord wood so there's no long ramp down or coals to keep the stove so hot for so long.

It is always comforting to know that most WETT inspectors are in the wood stove business, and can offer expensive alternatives to your unsafe device you have been using for decades.
You have misinterpreted my comment. The inspector merely suggested an ad he saw posted. He did not profit from this. That would be a conflict of interest. SP

If it is up to the insurance guys you are just allowed to sit up straight and breath. Noting at all wrong with the old one and the way you installed it. However, the new one is a great deal and absolutely gorgeous!

Good morning Slim! That appears to be a nicer setup than before ... and, safer. At my old place (before I bought it), the wood stove was grabbed by neighbours. Those neighbours can't get insurance. The neighbours also hide from the fire department inspectors when they come knocking.
When I lived in Toronto, there was a furniture manufacturer that would leave end pieces at the road in large bins. The best burning wood because it had already been dried but before anything else had been done to treat the wood. It was a popular place for campers, like bears at a garbage dump ;-)

I love your little cabin. Look really comfortable and cozy. I remodeled a house of my own. But after watching all your fix up videos I realize that there are steps I should have taken the first time instead of trying to correct them many years later. A brand new natural gas furnace, in Michigan, costs $2700.00 US dollars. That price includes installation. So that wood stove is a real expense saver. Simple design so no break downs. In and done! Wood can be sourced at a discount if a person is resourceful and smart. A furnace is designed to need repairs and need full replacement every 20 years. That wood stove will be ok for at least 75 yrs. Win Win Win Slim! Congrats.

I live in an old house in Saskatchewan. I've been wanting to add a wood stove ever since I moved here. I appreciate all the information you provided here, especially as regards what's insurable and roughly what it will cost. I'd been dreaming about getting an old parlour stove, but I doubt very much it would be insurable.

That is a good deal, Slim, and it looks right at home in the cabin. I miss having wood heat. Nothing like cozying up beside the stove on a cold morning with a cup of tea and a good book.
Nice looking stove. I have the double wall extendable stove pipe, too. It can get harder to slide as it gets used and dirty - I find that if you put three metal screws in the top joint that will hold it still so you can grip the pipe and pull down to set it over the section below. Expandable section makes it easier to dismantle for cleaning, too. On the subject of free wood try stopping by a truss builders - they have a high amount of wastage in the manufacturing process and most have a bin outside for people to take it away for free - often of a size you can build small projects with, too. I have one near me in NS and used to have close by when I lived in NB, too. A bit far from you, though, but hopefully there’s one around you somewhere. 👍🏻

Another correction. It's not a "wood stove" (it's actually a metal stove). It's a "wood burning stove". I had to say it.
We had a Vermont casting and we would get about 10 full cords each year for free (construction) from demoing trees and would split it by hand (elm was killer to split). The house was toasty all winter but when it dropped below zero Farenheit I was throwing wood in like the stove was a huge wood vacuum cleaner! Every hour I got up to feed it.
You are particular! We have enjoyed watching you for probably seven years and this is one e reason why we keep watching. You are very original and entertaining. Why travel with such a cozy cabin? Also, trailer ideas- A Trail Manor? Low profile and better mpg.
That stove you bought is 1000x better than the old antique you had. Stay warm!
We too used to have a Vermont Casting stove... it WAS pretty but, Yea... not so efficient.
We now have a Jotul with a nice glass front. This one is SO much more EFFICIENT... quite pricy but a great investment. 👍 Watching the flame is typically way better than what's on TV. 🪵 🔥 😊

Just so you know, they do make a boot that fits around the chimney pipe on the roof used for metal roofs to prevent leaks. One was installed when they put the metal roof on my house.

Slim, when I had a wood burner at my old house, I used cutoff two by fours to split for kindling. I split them into pieces about one inch square, and had them ready to go in a basket for whenever I wanted to make a fire. They were great fire starters along with pine cones from my white pine tree!

I was able to identify the carpenter ants that started to infest our cabin because of the experience you shared. I live in BC caribou country, bought a small place for retirement, 75 yrs. old, well built and insulated. When I went to get insurance they required electrical permits, none exist, the electric was redone at sometime, inspector said it was done professionally. Got insurance searching out companies that didn't require permits.
No wood stove, it almost doubles insurance and I didn't want to deal with getting wood, I had installed a new natural gas furnace and central air, got a new stove (gas) had a gas fitter install it and certify my gas lines etc. I find my gas heat costs about the same as wood would.
Originally the house had oil heat and a coal/wood kitchen stove. The chimney has been enclosed.
We have been surrounded by forest fires yet insurance companies are more concerned about wood stoves, ironic!

I love the new stove Slim! It sure is going to make Christmas, all that much more enjoyable, at the cabin! I must admit, I am surprised how expensive a bunch of stove pipe was though! I am glad that you are WET certified, and that you can now stay warm!

I spent three yrs. trying to stop the leaks on my do it yourself skylight. Everytime I got up there I increased the repairs and thought, this time for sure. Nothing worked. When I had the shop roof reroofed the guys who knew what they were doing removed the skylight, repositioned it and it has not leaked since. That's my story. Slim is probably smarter than me.

Im 82, downsized 20 yrs ago to 1946 Cottage, w basement, needed lots TLC. Wish could have wood stove. Miss my Heatalater insert real brick fireplace, but State outlawed wood burners yrs ago. a trick I learned when I was a kid : once you have set up your kindling ,roll up a piece of newspaper into a torch and shove the lit end into the chimney hole, this warm it up and helps to draw the air up in a cold chimney, you can now light your kindling and have less, if any, smoke inside
That works on an old stove, but the new ones exit in the front. No access to the flue.

I love the new stove! Glad you got a deal on it. Can’t believe the prices for everything else!! I put in a wood stove in my old house in 1988 and I don’t think I paid about $400. For a used stove, all new piping and that heat floor mat that looked just like yours. Inflation!
Having a woodstove in my cottage would be a dream the older I get the more I realize I can care less about having speed, boats and motorcycles, and I would rather have a nice fireplace and an enclosed porch with a view

We used a ceiling fan with a wood burning stove to distribute the heat we were always comfy. Winter fan to be clockwise to pull air up and circulate warm air. We always kept a big pot of water on the top of the stove for moisture and never got sick. Soon as that pot dried out we were dry.😅

The new stove is quite an upgrade in all aspects. I'd guess it's much more efficient. Seasoned pine is fine. If my memory serves me, it burns hotter but quicker. I used to use it to get things going, then add hardwood to extend burn time.
