It's a good thing the war machine corporate controllers banned Ron Paul from putting such terrible ideas into the minds of Americans! In these cooties19 times, I'm wondering how to put a wood stove chimney into a modern home in a pinch... I've been really wanting to have back up heat (well, if I had it my way, it would be primary heat!)
      I can grow food and hunt and we have small livestock and have multiple options for cooking, a creek for water, but heat in the winter?? That's the one that I'm really worried about.
      Im thinking a wood stove on concrete floor of the walk out basement, just in case, vent through a window?
      So many videos but not enough for complete noobs explaining the bare basics and mechanics so we understand what we are doing and why, so if it becomes a necessity, we know how to put something efficient and safe, on they fly....
      If it was entirely up to me, I'd have a rocket mass heater down there with parlor stoves for boosters and "space heaters".
      Ultimately I'd like to have an actual big momma cook stove oven, in my kitchen, (husband has a long way to go before that would ever happen) but in a SHTF situation, everything is fair game.
      Anybody have suggestions?

    This is great video, with a lot of details explanation. I'm curious about what the inside of the attic looks like? Did you box in the pipe?

    • @CountryLivingExperience
      @CountryLivingExperience  3 роки тому +2

      Thank you. Sorry the attic is so tight, it is hard to even crawl back to the point of install. The ceiling box that you saw installed is the only surround that is required. It sticks into the attic about 8 inches and holds the insulation back from touching the chimney pipe. Some people like to add taller sheet metal boxes but it is not necessary.

    Hello,
    Best tutorial the average Joe like myself could have asked for. We are getting the Drolet HT 3000 and can't wait to have it up and blazing!
    I was quoted $5000 from the "professionals" to do it and I don't think this is as much of rocket science as they made it seem.
    I find the hardest part is finding all the right parts and pieces as none of my local big box stores have a complete set of the same brand. That last piece you mentioned (double wall chimney adapter) which came in my Duravent Up the ceiling kit, do you happen to know if it would fit a non Duravent double wall black stovepipe? I was able to get Duravent Chimney pipes so that's good from ceiling support and up but I can only get my hands on either a Selkirt or Supervent black stovepipe and I'm not sure if they would fit a Duravent adapter.
    I'm hoping the Duravent adapter is universal and would accept any brand but sometimes it pays off to double check everything in advance as I already know how finicky those products are.
    Hope I didn't bore you out with my rant but any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks again for the wonderful content!

    They are very picky in Canada about woodstoves. You have to have an inspector come to your house and check it out before you can get house insurance. All your pipes have to be double insulated. They do not want to insure you at all with woodstoves and charge more money for insurance. Unless you pay cash for your house you have to have insurance. They also check to see if you have working smoke detectors and carbon monoxide. We probably burn a lot more wood than you do because of the cold weather. We have been lighting fires since October and have 2 stoves. We also burn 12 cords a year and have to clean the pipes quite regularly.

    • @CountryLivingExperience
      @CountryLivingExperience  4 роки тому +4

      Sorry to hear they are so strict. We are fortunate. I will probably burn one cord this winter if it is cold. Twelve cords is a huge amount but I know how cold it is up there. I think my uncle burns about 10 in northern Michigan every winter. Hope you are well.

      I do agree, however I was a roofer for some years. And I recall us putting a bead only underneath the shingles around the rim after the boot/flange was installed. That is where water is going to get underneath if anything. And freeze and cause rot Etc. As a roofer you always have to think like you're a stream of water. I'm only watching this because I'm planning on installing a wood stove and I have to refresh my memory as it's been some years lol

I just put a new roof and I don't want to mess with taking the part that's sitting on top of the roof out and mess up the roof and I said to the contract and maybe we could just seal it from the inside and whoever buys my house if they want to buy another wood stove and put it in they can or they can get something else but what is your advice on taking it out and sealing it up from the inside and not missing the outside of the roof because it is a new roof and we get a lot of snow here in Colorado I don't want any snow or rain to get under it and have a leak.

      I would take it completely out and have a roofer fix the roof personally. This is more of a question for your real estate agent and a contractor.

    I liked the thoroughness of your video, very helpful. Did you have to install a cold air intake pipe at bottom of stove?

    I’ll never understand sealant under the flashing and then sliding it into place. It’s just smearing on the roof with no way to form a seal. If you dropped it straight down without moving it, maybe.

    this video is super helpful!! could you tell me what kind of piping is needed to run between the fireplace and the ceiling? is it a single layer black pipe or does it have to be double or triple wall as well? Thank you for your help!!!

    • @CountryLivingExperience
      @CountryLivingExperience  Рік тому

      You’re welcome. It is actually a double layer Duravent DVL stovepipe. Single wall gives off more heat though.

      @jleight9544 Рік тому

      Single wall will require a minimum of 18” clearance to combustible material. Double wall is only 6”. Important information

    Did you put any sealant on the underside of those shingles ? Also, what kind of screws did you use to secure the flashing ? You made an excellent video, I'm going to use your video and Knowledge to install my furnace flu pipe through my garage roof. One other thing do you know how many feet you have to be above the ridge/peak of the roof. I'm like 3' feet away. Thanks if you could answer those 3 things for me. I would appreciate it. Thank you

      Thanks, I appreciate it.
      No sealant needed. The shingles were new so their sealing strips are still very good. I used decking screws since they are coated and won't corrode or rust (for a long time). You should be 24" above that ridge line.

      @CountryLivingExperience ok great, thank you for getting back to me, I ordered all of my selkirk through the roof kit. Looking forward to getting heat in my garage this winter. Yeah I have older shingles, I'll probably have to get a tube of roofing cement/cork. Looks like an easy enough job to do. Or you just made it seem that way, lol. Ok have a good night. Thanks again

      Just one more thing Did you use the Dap, polyurethane sealer on both the under sde of the flashing and around pipe collar. Will that also work to keep my older shingles down, or should i buy something else @CountryLivingExperience

    • @CountryLivingExperience
      @CountryLivingExperience  2 місяці тому +1

      @@nickpanhead7209 I used the DAP everywhere. Since I had a double wall chimney pipe, I didn't have to use the high temp stuff. The DAP should keep your shingles down too but be careful where you put it.

    Great video. At 21:50 you mention a link to a worksheet or website that helps with the calculations for the chimney pipe spacing and clearance’s. Do you have one you recommend? Thanks!

    • @CountryLivingExperience
      @CountryLivingExperience  Рік тому

      There are two types....catalytic and non-catalytic. Catalytic wood stoves differ from non-catalytic in that they produce fewer exhaust fumes and burn more efficiently. In addition to burning wood, catalytic wood stoves also have a combustor that burns the smoke and byproducts.

    Did you have to put anything under the shingles that you pulled up that laid over your flange?
    Also did you seal the gap between the edge of the shingles you cut and the insert?
    Thanks

    Nice video! I'd like to know how one keeps from smearing the adhesive all over the decking and keeps a good bead under there to get good surface adhesion when reinstalling the flashing after the dry fit.

    • @CountryLivingExperience
      @CountryLivingExperience  3 роки тому

      The adhesive shouldn’t be that runny. It should stay where you put it until you get the flashing down.

    • @Cacheola
      @Cacheola 3 роки тому

      Use LOTS, double what he used and lift the flashing up high enough as you slide it up in there so as not to smear it all off the leading edge - he could've done a better job with the flashing, otherwise excellent vid

      Or just remove the shingling around the area and reinstall it after you’ve secured the flashing. They make roofing tar in tubes to reseal shingles.

    What are your thoughts on putting a wood stove in a split level home from basement to first floor is 4 steps and to the second is 6 steps. Using a wood stove to heat the home over the furnace?

    • @CountryLivingExperience
      @CountryLivingExperience  2 роки тому

      It is going to be difficult to move that heat through the levels. I would put one in just for emergency backup and comfort.

    • @CountryLivingExperience
      @CountryLivingExperience  3 роки тому

      You're welcome. I have never installed one on a metal roof personally. I do know that there is a special kit that you can get for a metal roof. All the other pieces and processes are the same as in the video.

    • @kevinsubartowicz9132
      @kevinsubartowicz9132 2 роки тому

      Same process basically except you’ll have to deal with overlapping pieces of roofing sheet metal instead of shingles. In essence you want everything overlapping so water runs off and away.
