In my opinion, if the roster was cut down to 41 I would try to fit in as many unique franchises as possible (I.E. 1 Mario rep, 1 Zelda rep, 1 Metroid rep, etc) There are some who could be considered a representative of two different series (DK representing DK Country and Mario franchises) so there would be considerations as to “could we risk this franchise getting a second rep in order to represent an additional series?” And then finally Captain Falcon and the Mii Fighters would need to be included because captain falcon essentially represents the smash series itself, and Nintendo would want Miis so that they can sell us Mii Costumes as DLC
Agreed except Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon definitely need at least a few reps each. There are some franchises that are very popular but don't need more than one character to represent the series, like Animal Crossing and Minecraft.
@@Madchimpz Zelda you either have only Link or you have Link, Zelda, and Ganon Pokemon there’s Pikachu and Pokemon Trainer being the guarantied representations Mario is definitely an interesting series because besides Mario, Peach, and Bowser, there is also Luigi for Luigi’s Mansion, DK for DK Country, Wario for WarioWare, and Yoshi for Yoshi’s Island
Cutting Fox and not Falcon is a wild move to make in a video where you parade around saying “I’m not biased” and “I’m thinking in terms of modern Nintendo guys”
Gotta give some props that you at least consider that North America isn't the only region in the world that has characters they enjoy. Most youtubers would take Fire Emblem and Xenoblade out as their first choices, leaving two entire Nintendo IPs without any reps at all because: "annie-may bad and not thing I specifically remember and like from when I was a kid". Entirely ignoring their overseas popularity, as well as their ever rising reception in the west as well.
Fire Emblem literally sells more in the west. Whenever Fire Emblem fans talk sales they act like it's really niche and overhated here, but it sells more in the west. Obviously "the west," is more than just NA and is a larger region than just a singular country, but it's not like Japan eats the games up. Fire Emblem used to sell more in the East, but it's just not the case anymore. If we're talking about "ignoring overseas popularity," why are we not keeping Hero? DQ is actually insane in Japan more than NA and is a more significant series than both Fire Emblem (who IS over repped let's be honest. Keep Marth, Chrom, Robin rest can go) and Xenoblade (honestly I just don't like XB2, it's my least favorite so I'm much happier with just Shulk).
@@AzumarillConGafasBv What kind of take is this? Having fun gameplay, the best fire emblem graphic style, and selling 1.6 million is a flop game? Sure sure.
14:06 This was actually a pretty good list, just a few minor complaints. Like I don't see there being 5 Pokemon in a halved roster, and the weakest link here is clearly Mewtwo (unless something big happens with him in Legends ZA). And keeping Steve over Pacman when Bamco is probably making the next game again is just odd, we know who Nintendo will favor.
Honestly, now I want to see your 2am brain cut ultimate's stage selection in half. I need to see what I'm working with once I decide to mod my switch and joking use this video as a template.
I understand why people usually cut R.O.B. as people don't know how important the robot is to Nintendo's history he was the reason, why the NES flew off the shelves
Rob had nothing to do whit nintendo selling off the shaves it was super mario bros. Nobody care about Rob he was discontinued few years after nes was released. You know nothing.
I think if you want to represent that side of the NES, you have two options: R.O.B and Duck Hunt, since the Zapper had the same goal as R.O.B. I would personally keep Duck Hunt over R.O.B, I just think the dog is more iconic
I guess R.O.B. restored the reputation of / trust in gaming consoles, because he helped market the NES as a toy, not as a game console (Thus, stores actually began selling NESs after the crash). But people didn't buy the NES for R.O.B., he got like two games, both far from bestsellers, and was discontinued after that. At the very least, people dared to try out Super Mario Bros. instead.
Glad to see xc2 getting respect here. Pyra and Mythra remain the most popular and iconic members of the series even post xc1 remake and xc3. Huge star power for an up and coming series. They can fit 3 reps with an xc3/4 member for sure.
I’d agree with all of this apart from when he said that Pyra stays because of Japan, and hero (who literally got added exclusively because of Japan) gets cut
I personally agree with most* of this list. That little tangent you did at the end was a bit much, but some of the choices at the end were actually great! Pac-Man is pretty essential, and Fox is one of the faces of melee! However, I would liks to try to add Jigglypuff back in, because Hungrybox.
Yeah he's way too iconic of a character to cut. Insanity to be like "we need 3 kirby characters" "we need Wii Fit Trainer who isnt even an actual character and is only played by a tiny minority of players" -- and then be like "we're cutting Fox and Jigglypuff, two of the most iconic characters in the Smash scene" (especially Fox since it's erasing an entire franchise)
Honestly, out of all the "Cut the Roster in Half" videos I've seen, this is the most well-put together one imo. And maybe with a roster this smol, characters like Donkey Kong or Ganondorf can get more development time into giving them more faithful movesets, so there's a LITTLE bit of positivity to have with this.
I think the majority can agree that especially the 64 cast NEEDS to have their move sets updated each character since 64 has gotten new games and more moves to pull from to give them a fresh new take while also still keeping them iconic. Plus the 64 move sets over years have DEFINITELY shown their ugly cracks over time at this point.
@@leohernandez8751 Yes, exactly. Mario, for example, I think they can give him some more faithful and representative moves and still keep him as the "basic starter" character he's always been. Some mods of Project M give him some moves like Cappy for his Side B, a Super Leaf for Up B and some new normals like a Down Air Ground Pound, Up Air Upward Punch, but still keep a couple of moves like Forward Air and his tilts. It'd take some work, but it's definitely possible.
Bro kept characters like Wii Fit and Game and Watch but cut Pac-Man. In the Bandai Namco developed series. Along with the other reps from them of Ryu (and Ken) being cut as well.
One thing I never see with "cutting the Roster" videos is merging character together like Bowser Jr, you can get quite a few extra spaces if characters that are very similar to each other only take one spot, as if they are a costume but still act differently. Mario and Dr Mario, marth and lucina, Roy and chrom, Ness and Lucas, villager and issabelle, even ryu and Ken, just make them one fighter with slightly different attributes
or just make them skins, make them literally the exact same thing, Dr Mario should just be Mario with a labcoat not a different character to develop and balance and learn to play as and against
@@----x----- no way, it's piss easy to tweak some attributes slightly but keep basically the same bones and moveset. Dr. Mario and Mario having different properties makes them actually have unique fans and mains, its a huge deal that costs nothing to do.
bruh you would have to include Fox, Ness & Jigglypuff because One of the Rules of cutting the Smash Ultimate Roster in Half is Legacy and Impact for Smash... so all of the OG 12 Would Return for a Smash 6, IN THE BASE ROSTER!!!
I would argue the miis have been getting phased out by Nintendo. They are hardly ever present in the switch. They hardly ever show up in games and it wouldn’t be surprising to see that trend continue into the next generation… so basically I think either 1 mii (with variety) or no mii slot. DEFINITELY don’t need 3 again. And I know you weren’t taking this into account but they have got to be some of the least played characters
Y'know, I was gonna disagree with this list, but then I remembered that this is all just Alax's opinion and it's okay to disagree. (That's all a lie. Alax looks fucking ripped in this video and if I disagreed I'm afraid he would beat the shit out of me parasocially and socially)
They do represent the playing style of Fire Emblem better than other characters because they also use the Axe, Spear and Bow, you know, the weapon types from Fire Emblem
If you're going by "what if Smash was invented today" criteria, this list is perfect except for Wii Fit Trainer and Captain Falcon Fitness games and fighting games serve completely different target audiences, and while Wii Fit sold more because of the high number of casual Wii owners, the protagonist from Ring Fit Adventure would be a more relevant fitness game rep if you had to include one, and they'd easier to design a moveset for because you actually fight people in that game. Also, in what way does Wii Fit Trainer represent the Wii series games more than the Miis? Keeping Captain Falcon because he's iconic makes no sense because he's only iconic because of Smash, which doesn't make sense to use as reasoning if you're doing this in a vacuum. On top of that F-Zero is even deader than Star Fox, with fewer mainline games and the last new game being more than twice as old
THANK YOU, FOR CUTTING JIGGLYPUFF! I'm so sick of every 'Cut the Roster video' keeping her solely because she's "part of the original 12", like that should negate the fact that she's in the top 5 most cuttable characters in this whole roster. And the fact that this fan created rule almost still didn't save her from previous Smash games says all that there is about how irrelevant she is to keep. While you made other cuts I wholeheartedly disagreed with, I'm just glad you didn't disappoint me with with getting rid of Jigglypuff.
Plus even in Brawl, it was confirmed that Jigglypuff was SUPPOSED to be cut, but due to time constraints she was kept on the roster. In a newer Smash game, I don’t think legacy status is gonna save her next time.
Jigglypuff being part of the original 12 really should have no bearing on whether or not to cut it. In which case, Puff ABSOLUTELY needs to go if we were to cut anything from the original roster. Everyone else just feels too iconic imo
I'm genuinly baffled and overjoyed as to how Xenoblade managed to thrive over many other franchises in Nintendo's history, the Switch really gave this series a second shot at life when no one believed in it.

I watched til the end but yeah that was already a "you already burnt it, sorry" moment
In my opinion, if the roster was cut down to 41 I would try to fit in as many unique franchises as possible (I.E. 1 Mario rep, 1 Zelda rep, 1 Metroid rep, etc)
There are some who could be considered a representative of two different series (DK representing DK Country and Mario franchises) so there would be considerations as to “could we risk this franchise getting a second rep in order to represent an additional series?”
And then finally Captain Falcon and the Mii Fighters would need to be included because captain falcon essentially represents the smash series itself, and Nintendo would want Miis so that they can sell us Mii Costumes as DLC
Agreed except Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon definitely need at least a few reps each. There are some franchises that are very popular but don't need more than one character to represent the series, like Animal Crossing and Minecraft.
@@Madchimpz
Zelda you either have only Link or you have Link, Zelda, and Ganon
Pokemon there’s Pikachu and Pokemon Trainer being the guarantied representations
Mario is definitely an interesting series because besides Mario, Peach, and Bowser, there is also Luigi for Luigi’s Mansion, DK for DK Country, Wario for WarioWare, and Yoshi for Yoshi’s Island
I hope that we get a Professor Layton Character in this franchise one day.

Cutting Fox and not Falcon is a wild move to make in a video where you parade around saying “I’m not biased” and “I’m thinking in terms of modern Nintendo guys”
If smash related today there would not be 3 mii fighters

It’s not a good list.
"The ones that best represents Nintendo." Leaves in Minecraft Steve which is part of Microsoft. This tickles me.
Hear me out...
Brawl roster.
You are indeed cooking.
Brawl roster, cut some stinkers, replace some shiners from 4/Ultimate and done
Honestly, now I want to see your 2am brain cut ultimate's stage selection in half. I need to see what I'm working with once I decide to mod my switch and joking use this video as a template.
I understand why people usually cut R.O.B.
as people don't know how important the robot is to Nintendo's history
he was the reason, why the NES flew off the shelves
no i think nintendo marketed rob as having an nes accessory to try and wedge the nes into america and mario 1 actually saved gaming idk
Rob had nothing to do whit nintendo selling off the shaves it was super mario bros. Nobody care about Rob he was discontinued few years after nes was released. You know nothing.
@@INFERNO95 wow
And remember - NEVER cut Chrom
He’ll get his chance another day
I feel like Robin fits the series rather than Chrom.

I had a breakdown when he disrespected Marth, I was about to explode
I’d agree with all of this apart from when he said that Pyra stays because of Japan, and hero (who literally got added exclusively because of Japan) gets cut
Keeping wii fit trainer over Snake is insane to me
Incineroar being flavour of the month.
Competitive Pokémon community: "We just wanna talk to him" *loads gun*
I personally agree with most* of this list. That little tangent you did at the end was a bit much, but some of the choices at the end were actually great!
Pac-Man is pretty essential, and Fox is one of the faces of melee! However, I would liks to try to add Jigglypuff back in, because Hungrybox.
Cutting Pit was the only decision that actually pissed me off.
Rip, my melee and ultimate mains got cut; being falco and piranha plant. But samus, diddy kong and greninja lived.
Haven’t watched the video yet, but I’d like to propose an alt title:
Time to make some people mad
The roster looks like a businessman's financial plan.
0:35 No "New Funky Mode" on the mockup cover??
In reality, none of the original 12 would get cut.
Dude just cut the best Smash character, Fox. I don't use him, but a LOT of people do, especially from the Melee days.
But do they like Fox for Fox or just because of how he plays?
Yeah he's way too iconic of a character to cut. Insanity to be like "we need 3 kirby characters" "we need Wii Fit Trainer who isnt even an actual character and is only played by a tiny minority of players" -- and then be like "we're cutting Fox and Jigglypuff, two of the most iconic characters in the Smash scene" (especially Fox since it's erasing an entire franchise)
@@theSatonot to mention keeping Sonic and Steve, or any third party while cutting out entire Nintendo franchises
Its always funny seeing the lengths people will yo to to justify keeping Greninja when hes like the most popular Pokémon
42 slightly differently playing Incineroars. Megaman as a treat (DLC only).
Honestly I wouldn’t mind if Sonic was removed from the roster
Removing ness is kinda weird
The humongous balls on this man to keep byleth considering how the smash fan base reacted at the time.😅
Putting Captain Falcon in while cutting Fox and co despite both series being irrelevant nowadays was certainly a choice
DURIAH!!!
Fuck off no it wasn’t you tarded clown

Mario and Dr Mario, marth and lucina, Roy and chrom, Ness and Lucas, villager and issabelle, even ryu and Ken, just make them one fighter with slightly different attributes
or just make them skins, make them literally the exact same thing, Dr Mario should just be Mario with a labcoat not a different character to develop and balance and learn to play as and against
Take that Ryu and Ken comment back
We call those "Echo Fighters" around these parts.
Ness and Lucas play pretty differently. They share some specials but that's about it. It's like merging Mario and Luigi.

4:54 No Rosalina means I'm not buying it.
Wow, a Nintendo UA-camr who actually recognizes Xenoblade. Thank you Alex
Nevermind I got to 15 minutes
If Namco is still making smash, there’s absolutely no way PacMan is ever getting cut lol
Seeing Byleth as one of your first three survivors triggered me a lot more than I thought it would.
At least his reasoning is sound, I too would've picked Byleth to stay
They do represent the playing style of Fire Emblem better than other characters because they also use the Axe, Spear and Bow, you know, the weapon types from Fire Emblem
Stay focused.
In function they just play mostly like a swordie though. A half caster like Robin gives more actual variety.
My only disappointment was leaving out Cloud. Considering he is THE iconic JRPG protag. I agree with just about all of the other decisions.
If you're going by "what if Smash was invented today" criteria, this list is perfect except for Wii Fit Trainer and Captain Falcon
Fitness games and fighting games serve completely different target audiences, and while Wii Fit sold more because of the high number of casual Wii owners, the protagonist from Ring Fit Adventure would be a more relevant fitness game rep if you had to include one, and they'd easier to design a moveset for because you actually fight people in that game. Also, in what way does Wii Fit Trainer represent the Wii series games more than the Miis?
Keeping Captain Falcon because he's iconic makes no sense because he's only iconic because of Smash, which doesn't make sense to use as reasoning if you're doing this in a vacuum. On top of that F-Zero is even deader than Star Fox, with fewer mainline games and the last new game being more than twice as old
The Cuts that got me raging

3. Mega Man
4. PAC-MAN
5. Cloud
6. Robin
7. Pit
8. Jigglypuff
9. Fox McCloud
10. Ness
My man alax will make a perfectly convincing argument as to why remove Pit and then leave Dedede in over Banjo smh
I'm genuinly baffled and overjoyed as to how Xenoblade managed to thrive over many other franchises in Nintendo's history, the Switch really gave this series a second shot at life when no one believed in it.
Why couldn't the main character of the game that took JRPGS to the mainstream stay in the list????
Do you mean Cloud?
Ok, but why banjo? What did he do to you?
