The Rivals of Aether character select is another one that's great, having the character's portraits grouped by their elemental alignment, as well as having the mod support be built in to the menu itself. Not to mention they allow you to playtest your character ON the select screen itself. Absolutely goated, hope they keep that perfection up in the sequel.
@LukasArailiys Well, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they retained a similar sort of menu, just using the 3d models once selected (similar to Smash Bros. 64). Obviously, the layout would probably be different, but I'm sure it'll probably remain just as functional, as the entire game is made with the competitive aspect in mind (so they'd probably want menus that are as quick and easy to navigate as possible). But also, yeah, I absolutely agree on the character selection point. It's got an amazing roster, and the only new character showed off so far looks fun as hell. I might honestly be a Fleet main in Rivals 2 lol
Jet Set Radio had a really cool character selection "menu". It's every character doing their thing in their garage/secret base/turf and it really shows their personality. It's kinda unorganized, but it goes well with the messy and chaotic nature of the game! They even do a little dance after you select your character, I love it :)
I always liked how the characters were running or walking in the Sonic Adventure character select, they all looked so determined, and I liked how it was laid out in a circle. I think I kind of just like Sonic Adventure's menus, with the sky and the patterns and the fonts and the clean shapes.
Diddy Kong Racing always will be to me the best character select screen, love how the instruments changes for every character without restarting the song
How about in the 1 player mode of Crash Team Racing, where all the characters are doing their own things in their own, little rooms which you can cycle through?
The character select screen for Capcom vs. SNK’s arcade mode is fantastic. Groove selection changes character portraits to match the art style of the chosen groove (Capcom or SNK).

I think one of the most creative fighting game select screens has to be Capcom vs SNK 1 and that's not because the select screen itself but more so for the transitions in and out of it. I just love how we are going through a network of endless fights and picking a character is almost like turning the channel to the fighter you want to watch. Everything about it feels so exciting! It like the whole world is tuning in which might be the point as Capcom crossing over with SNK was such a massive deal that blew peoples minds. Making character select screens must be beyond fun.
UMVC3's character select screen is one of my favorites: 1- It's very organised with capcom in the left and Marvel on the rigth and and in the capcom side the carachters from the same series are in the same colum 2- the idea of being a comic book is amazing
Need some love for TF2! Being able to see your customized loadout, everyone with their own little animation, and of course that musical stinger when you hover over all the characters. It's just so good!

About Blazblue CrossTag, I heard that there were more than 100 characters planned to eventually be available (though I doubt it will happen now), so the character select screen was made to be future-proof in a way that they could add as many characters as they wanted while still fitting in the screen. It still doesn't look good, though. If you're curious about where the "more than 100 characters planned" info comes from, there was a game file listing the announcer's voice clips, and there were more than 100 different character names in that list.
The “100 characters” was never really confirmed, and most of those voice lines were most likely there for placeholder rather than sure picks. But by the end of the game’s development, the roster did end up exceeding 50 characters so it is a lot to fit.

Everyone standing together like a group photo with the borders on the top and bottom to frame it, and with the characters posed it can also convey a bit of everyone’s personality as well. When I here about Character Select Screens the first game that comes to my mind is Mario Hoops 3-on-3. The design there is beautiful, the music is awesome and the fact you throw the characters of your team in the nest is just the ice on the cake. My favorite Character Select Screens by far
It is a bit cheating, but...the head collection screen from Puppeteer is on point. Not to mention the music & the description of the heads itself. Splendido.

Would've been cool if you covered Them's Fightin' Herds Character Select, thanks to the music also changing depending on who's hovered over, high-lighting their personalities (Though that's mostly a result of the dynamic music within the game), it's simple, but pretty nice
I've always loved Injustice: Gods Among Us' character select screen. Am I alone in that? With the clean and neat way it's organized and fits together, 2 different poses for each character (depending on if they're 1st or 2nd player) depicting their personalities and fighting styles so well, and the little animation in the corner with the character's name, also depicting something important based around the character. It's almost perfect.
Recently got the game on ebay after a decade and grinded tf outta subspace emissary. The data on my wii was still there too. It was a wave of different emotions seeing the stages, photos, replays, and stats of the things I did as a kid. Brawl rules!
The screen may only have two characters on it, but I love how Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 does it's character select. Seeing the silhouette of the other rival in the background and seeing the colour swap outright is stylish, and I love how selecting them narrows it down to their eyes.
A key feature Smash ultimate removed was having your selection coin remain on your previous pick. In Wii U, if I wanted to keep a character, all I had to do was press A, and alternatively I would press B and pick a new one. In ultimate, you have to reselect your character. Every. Time.
okay- i found gather’s under night like a few weeks back, and it was instantly skyrocketed to my top ten songs of all time; i was so hyped when i heard it come on
hey alax, i just finished a launch and recieved the biggest W of my life today afternoon, it was an incredible moment. i was sleepless and tired and my head hurts and at the end of the day all alone i opened youtube and saw this reccomendation and i m not exagarating when i say that it's an easy close second. thanks, i have missed you.
I would have loved to kind of just taken more time. That's the big thing I'd change, just going into more depth. But perhaps I can do that another time.
one character select screen that i think is high on the funk scale is the binding of isaac rebirth, it goes all in on the presentation and looks just like one of isaac's drawings, and even though every character is the same color which would usually make it hard to find what youre looking for, theyre all on this little circular ring that you can see every character on at all times, its really nifty and cool :]
When she was playable the grand total of 5 times? Of which four were on portable consoles (one of which was a spin off) and one was as a team gimmick in Heroes? Nah bruh I don't remember.
the best character select screen i can think of is Twisted Metal: Black. all the characters and cars are in one big action-packed scene and the camera moves to each car as you scroll through them. and on every car, you can choose to view the driver and their asylum patient profile. it PERFECTLY fits the game’s gritty and violent vibe, and the music is IMMACULATE! you can even hear each vehicle’s engine sounds while you’re looking at them!
Honestly shocked you didn’t touch on the guilty gear games. Just seeing that split second of the xrd css makes me wish you talked about my favorite way to look at potemkin.
Double Dash's roster is just so insane. Not only do you have good/bad on the left/right, but you also have Medium -> Lightweight -> Heavy racers going from left to right (according to the main driver), and the unlockable pairs are exactly the 5th and 10th pair (counting left to right)! Also, Mario Super Sluggers is underrated, when playing an exhibition match, you pick your captain first, so there's a separate menu showing all 12 captains and they're posing to display their personality! And then, as a little fun fact, when you go into an exhibition match, P1's captain's head icon is excluded from the select screen, so there's technically multiple versions of the CSS :o (Also it has the best CSS theme like ever) Also I'm surprised you didn't mention the iconic Mario Party 1 or 2 CSS with everyone falling down the pipe or running in the pipe once you pick them XD
I get what he meant saying the earthbound characters were “anime related” (even though they’re more inspired by American stuff): anime -> japan -> mother 3 not being localized
I wish they came out with a marvel vs Capcom collection for consoles that would be so 🔥 just like how kof13 is coming to switch and definitely putting alot of hour's into that game would do the same if a mvc collection came out especially for switch
From the top of my head, other CSS that come to mind are Crash Team Racing, Crash Bash, Pizza Tower, Kirby Air Ride, and Sonic the Fighters. Crash Team Racing's got two; One for regular gameplay with a conventional layout, and another for the Adventure campaign, which is a turnaround of an area where the 8 main racers are hanging about, doing their things. Crash Bash has the characters separated between good and bad like in Double Dash, but the separation is horizontal, instead of vertical, including Aku Aku and Uka Uka denoting the rows of good guys and bad guys, respectively. Pizza Tower's CSS (added in as early as the Coop build from November 2019) is technically currently unused, but it has a pretty good presentation for being so minimal. Visually, nothing much besides a cute animation of Peppino and The Noise trying to shove arch other off from where they're standing, all the while in front of a lavender-colored brick wall with a spotlight. Meanwhile, audibly the player is met with a good slow-ish beat with that iconic "Work that sucks to death" sample that Sonic CD used. The player (or players) may only have the choice between two characters, but the game does a good amount to make sure that the decision is far from boring. Kirby Air Ride, you have the air riders (and Dedede and Meta Knight) placed inside of these rounded squares, and the colored indicator? That's not some kind of a consistent choice of denoting colors like the other ones; They indicate the color of the Kirby you'll be playing as (with four more unlockable through the checklist). Sonic the Fighters isn't that much exciting admittedly, but it is another 3D fighting gam where you can see the characters' models rotating whilst you make your decision. I don't really have much to say about NASB, I think they kinda copied a bit of their homework from Brawl, as far as the grading of bright/dark colors is comcerned (though the characters are kinda ordered in the same manner as For Wii U), though without visible names until a match is started. I guess the additional submenu customization options might be a mix between Smash Remix, and SSBU's controller customization menu, oddly enough? But that might be a stretch.
I myself really like Guilty Gear Strive's selection screen. The game's instrumental main theme playing in the background (Smell of the Game) and announcer saying "Who dares to enter the mayhem?" Every character has their in-game model rendered there and shows the character, their effective range (Rank A, best and many options, to C, little to no options), their general main gameplan and a flavor text to it. They also do a taunt after being chosen. I think that's neat
I think it's good and the music being the instrumental version of the main theme is a neat touch, but I feel Guilty Gear Xrd had the best select screen they've done yet. (it's seen at 08:26 in this video). You have the clean 2D art when hovering over a character, then it transitions into the 3D model when selected. There's also a lot of neat details/fluff like the announcers being the characters themselves or the world map at the bottom that shows the whereabouts of the selected character.
The worst CSS screen I’ve ever seen is Blazblue Crosstag Battle. No other game has so much happening yet gives you so much less information than any other game LMAO CALLED IT
There are 3 character select screens i would like to mention: Twisted Metal 2: It is a bit old since Twisted Metal 2 is a PS1 game, but the music and background globe sets the dark humourous tone of a world-wide demolition derby perfectly. It shows off the 3D model of the car you choosing and by selecting the car, you get the cars stats and a portrait and short bio of the driver. Overwatch 1: Considering that the whole point of the game was to switch characters mid-match i think it did an amazing job. The background is your current spawn-point, so it never gets boring to look at, the hero portraits are on the down row sorted by role with small nametags when you go over them with the cursor and when you switch to a character he pops up in his ready animation. Heroes of the Storm: When you entered the quickplay menu the first thing you saw was your last selected character in the teleportation lobby with your friends characters on the side, if you played with friends. Clicking on your character would open the character select which neatly wrapped to the left and right of the selected character, so you had the character right in the middle. And you could organize and sort the character per alphabet, franchise, role and my favorite, how much exp that character needed for a lvl up. Damn, i miss HotS.....
One Piece Pirate Warriors usually has pretty interesting character select screens that sort the character in a row based on the group they are affiliated with. In One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 you have the Straw Hat Pirates on the first row, "Pirates 1" on the next row which includes crew members of the Yonko and pirates from Luffy's grand fleet, "Pirates 2" features pirates from the worst generation and warlords, Marines obviously features all characters that are Marines and other which includes characters that don't fit in a single group like Rob Lucci because he works for the World Government or because he actually didn't work for them when the game was made, Aokiji who also quit the Marines and hadn't a real group or Carrot the Mink who traveled with Luffy for a while but didn't directly join the crew.
i'm a big fan of the guilty gear strive's character select screen, the intense music gearing you up for the fight, the characters full bodies being visible on the screen, doing their idle animations, they taunt if you select them, the background is interactive when you start a match, how it shows the eagle taking off when it leads you to the vs screen, it's simplistic, but also has a lot going for it
@@giz1006 kinda true, i've played a fair amount of xrd and strive, been meaning to check the other games out, but i think strive's good, it does what it needs to do
You know what was a good character select screen? _Dragon Ball: Hyper Dimension._ There's just something so chill about the song "Strongest Fighters in the Universe", but so powerful about that orchestra hit when you choose someone. And then, there's Super Buu just sitting there, losing patience as the hourglass burns through sand… Good stuff!
I know this is a non-serious video, but that isn’t even the main Super Mario Sluggers select screen, just the minigame one. That one’s pretty weird, but the main select screen of the game is very organized and looks good imo
One fighting game with a character select screen I really like is Pocket Rumble. Since the aesthetic of the game is emulating NeoGeo Pocket fighting games, of course the screen is minimalist, and the fact that there are 8 characters total means that the UI doesn't take up a lot of space. That said, when you place your cursor over a character, not only do they appear in their idle animation but each of them has their name appear in a stylized animation. For instance, Parker, who is dressed in a suit and tie, and focuses more on defense and setplay, has his name be written in a typewriter. June, who is the ghost of a girl, has her name engraved on a tombstone along with the years of her birth and death.
Lmao such a funny guy, this RelaxAlax fellow! That "Temu" sponsor was really funny! It reminds me of that Mr. Jacob Alpharad who did the same thing! Anyway, we need to stop these shitty, scammy Temu sponsors. You're better than this, Alax.
Konami Krazy Racers is another instance of all the characters all being put together in a group photo, which is always great - though you have to press left and right to cycle your selection between the roster, and unlockable characters, when unlocked, are hidden behind other characters in the character select (or they just straight up don't appear though they seem like they're meant to when visible) and only pop up when you select them, which can be an issue
went to the comments looking for injustice 2 and I am SHOCKED that I haven't seen anyone say that one yet. easily one of the best select screen that comes to mind. the character interactions are just so cool!
Chances are they won’t since they’re switching to 3D models. RoA’s character selection is so good though

The screen may only have two characters on it, but I love how Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 does it's character select. Seeing the silhouette of the other rival in the background and seeing the colour swap outright is stylish, and I love how selecting them narrows it down to their eyes.
Mario Slam Basketball for the Nintendo DS has an amazing Character Select screen and I'm sad it's not in this Video
The Kirby star Allies guest star and ultimate choice character selection screens are honestly REALLY GOOD.
A key feature Smash ultimate removed was having your selection coin remain on your previous pick. In Wii U, if I wanted to keep a character, all I had to do was press A, and alternatively I would press B and pick a new one. In ultimate, you have to reselect your character. Every. Time.
Mario Strikers Charged has the Greatest character select screen of all time!
14:16 bro, shouldve talked about the menus music, thats the true definition of funk
13:45 Thanks for telling me where that's from, 2 years from when I was curious.
He actually did the sponsorship like he said he would on stream
okay- i found gather’s under night like a few weeks back, and it was instantly skyrocketed to my top ten songs of all time; i was so hyped when i heard it come on
I love BBTAG so underrated imo, I was hoping it's God awful character select screen would be mentioned. What a treat lol
hey alax, i just finished a launch and recieved the biggest W of my life today afternoon, it was an incredible moment. i was sleepless and tired and my head hurts and at the end of the day all alone i opened youtube and saw this reccomendation and i m not exagarating when i say that it's an easy close second. thanks, i have missed you.
9:48 I remember this select screen, brought back a lot of memories when at my friends house during the summer
Wait WHAT THE FUC-
Absolutely my favorite recent video from you, I haven't been so excited to click on a video in my life, loved every second of it!
Can’t believe temu stopped me from getting a xenoblade video
Soulcalibur II.
The music, the animations, the transitions.
God tier.
Would've loved this video to be like 30 minutes long honestly. Really fun and interesting video.
I would have loved to kind of just taken more time. That's the big thing I'd change, just going into more depth. But perhaps I can do that another time.
@@relaxalax and we’ll be here waiting with snacks in hand for whenever that time comes🫡
one character select screen that i think is high on the funk scale is the binding of isaac rebirth, it goes all in on the presentation and looks just like one of isaac's drawings, and even though every character is the same color which would usually make it hard to find what youre looking for, theyre all on this little circular ring that you can see every character on at all times, its really nifty and cool :]
The Binding of Isaac has one of the coolest character select screens I’ve ever seen
0:39 Remember when Cream was one of the most prominent Sonic characters?
And then, as a little fun fact, when you go into an exhibition match, P1's captain's head icon is excluded from the select screen, so there's technically multiple versions of the CSS :o (Also it has the best CSS theme like ever)
Also I'm surprised you didn't mention the iconic Mario Party 1 or 2 CSS with everyone falling down the pipe or running in the pipe once you pick them XD
2:46 Genius multi-layered joke.
To me, the bloody roar Xtreme select screen is one of the best ones. Specially with the background music, simply perfect.
12:28 My favourite ongoing joke returns
Honestly love these ui videos
Bro, didnt you get the memo. Temu is the Established Titles of 2023: Shady as fun.
We need a part 2 of this video, such a good topic
Tekken 6 character select goes crazy
I get what he meant saying the earthbound characters were “anime related” (even though they’re more inspired by American stuff): anime -> japan -> mother 3 not being localized
11:10 that toad joke fucking got me :)
Damn loving these latest videos you’ve been making alax, thanks man lov I
NOT THE TEMU SPONSOR 😭😭🙏🙏
Oh my lord i fucking love Street Fighter 3 Third Strikes Select screen the music the layout the colors everything about it is just awesome
Guess temu is leeching into everyone now
SF Alpha 2 is just a bop of CS screens
Honestly I’d like to see alax, do a video on split screens, so many of them are awful, but sometimes you’ll get some weird one.
Yeah but a lot of the play styles listed are just flat out wrong or literally mean nothing (*cough* shooting *cough*)
Cool, the temu tears of the kingdom game isn't available 30 minutes after video release.
also first page it took me to had micro sd card scam :))))))
Okay but if Ultimate had the thing where it shows every character just hanging out together there would have to be *multiple screens*
The worst CSS screen I’ve ever seen is Blazblue Crosstag Battle. No other game has so much happening yet gives you so much less information than any other game
LMAO CALLED IT
There are 3 character select screens i would like to mention:
Twisted Metal 2: It is a bit old since Twisted Metal 2 is a PS1 game, but the music and background globe sets the dark humourous tone of a world-wide demolition derby perfectly.
9:29 Top 10 griddy
This made me realize something. My holiday fighting game concept... The character select screen could look like a calendar!
1:48 this is a real “Nermal” moment
One Piece Pirate Warriors usually has pretty interesting character select screens that sort the character in a row based on the group they are affiliated with. In One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 you have the Straw Hat Pirates on the first row, "Pirates 1" on the next row which includes crew members of the Yonko and pirates from Luffy's grand fleet, "Pirates 2" features pirates from the worst generation and warlords, Marines obviously features all characters that are Marines and other which includes characters that don't fit in a single group like Rob Lucci because he works for the World Government or because he actually didn't work for them when the game was made, Aokiji who also quit the Marines and hadn't a real group or Carrot the Mink who traveled with Luffy for a while but didn't directly join the crew.
i'm a big fan of the guilty gear strive's character select screen, the intense music gearing you up for the fight, the characters full bodies being visible on the screen, doing their idle animations, they taunt if you select them, the background is interactive when you start a match, how it shows the eagle taking off when it leads you to the vs screen, it's simplistic, but also has a lot going for it
its a nice menu but compared to other games in series it kinda sucks
It’s the worst guilty gear one though, the music is literally just instrumental smell of the game and there’s no style at all
@@giz1006 kinda true, i've played a fair amount of xrd and strive, been meaning to check the other games out, but i think strive's good, it does what it needs to do
Xrd has the best character select in the series, from the music to the aesthetic
@@bassbusterx nah its og xx
You know what was a good character select screen? _Dragon Ball: Hyper Dimension._ There's just something so chill about the song "Strongest Fighters in the Universe", but so powerful about that orchestra hit when you choose someone. And then, there's Super Buu just sitting there, losing patience as the hourglass burns through sand… Good stuff!
You fell for the pool stage. Youre supposed to jump in the first few frames to avoid falling in.
I know this is a non-serious video, but that isn’t even the main Super Mario Sluggers select screen, just the minigame one. That one’s pretty weird, but the main select screen of the game is very organized and looks good imo
Oh no Alax don’t accept sponsors from Temu, it’s a total scam!
The skullgirls css is really good, I was surprised it wasn’t in the video
DO NOT AHOP TEMU they steal information.
I love this video, and I feel like you're the only creator I know who would make it (and things like it).
