*Great reel, **enjoyable.fishing** recommend very smooth and I love that you can change from left hand to right hand so easily. Gave it a 4 on durability because I haven’t had it long enough to rate it. Doing good so far.*
Just ordered two and waiting on them to arrive. As someone used to working with freshwater bait caster style reels, cleaning them is always a dread. This looks so simple and easy to do. Looking forward to these reels arriving.
Removing the handle, dog and drive gear assembly is also very simple. I do it a couple times a season along with this general cleaning, maintaining. The beauty of Avet reels is you can disassemble every piece, clean, service and reassemble in 15-20 minutes. There really aren't any tricky areas, even the dog and dog actuator is super simple. I'm glad to see the very little grease on the drive and pinion gears. People put far too much many times. My technique is just to grease the pinion gear teeth and it's plenty to spread on the main gear. Great video, shows how fast this is done and you could actually do more disassembly and it takes another two minutes.
Warm water has created a late season tuna bite here off of New Jersey. My Avet reel head was ceased up "no free spool". Never been able to take a reel apart and putting it back successfully. Thanks to your excellent tutorial, I was able to pull the reel apart and clean everything up and will be able to take my rod fishing tonight. THANK YOU. P.S. have you ever thought about doing a tutorial on the 30 international?
Hi Mark, thanks for your interesting videos. I would like to update my AVET JX 6.0 SINGLE SPEED handle knob. What size wrench should be used to remove the knob shaft nut? Thanks
I have yet to visit New Jersey, but would like to. My shirt is referring to the Sportfishing boat called the Vagabond. I love that boat and the skipper is the best around and the nicest to everyone. If you ever can go on his boat, you will be pleased.
one question, my XL reel, it will not free spool. I played around with it and it finally broke loose. I am going tuna fishing on sunday and considering do this. Although i don't have that kind of grease but i assume anything right now will work better than what I have.
Hi I just bought a SXJ RAPTOR left handed and my handle seem to have a lot of play in it is this normal for these kind of reels? I’ve never used or own one before
hey mark, on my sx whenever I spin the handle in the wrong direction/engage the dog, the spool spins back with the handle a little bit in the wrong direction. is this normal or something I need to check out. thanks.
Can you tell me why I cant silence my mxj 5.8 mc clicker please? It has only been used once and I did rinse it off. If not Im in Nj is there a repair shop for avets? Thank you
There is a c clip that lets you remove all of the clicker. BE SURE you watch the order of parts! I add a drop of oil to new and used clickers every time I use them. I then work it back and forth to get the oil everywhere. It works for me. I have 10 year old Avets that work like new or better.
If you wish to add grease, insist on genuine Cal's grease. Clean the drag washer with a clean, dry, paper towel. Apply grease liberally and the wipe off as much as you can without hurting the washer. Rebuild and test for correct drag. If the drag is substantially less, you skipped the grease removal step or did not remove enough.
I am considering doing this, but hesitant as I found that pre-lever drag reels had sticky drag if the washers were greased. Do you ever have an issue with sticky drag due to grease ? I recently purchased a blemished Avet LX raptor. It's drag was sticky and when I opened it up I found that one of the drag plates had pits. I have some minor pitty in some of my other avet drag plates. Seems like if I greased my drag washers the chance of this problem would be minimized.
John McKroid Jr. I use Cal Sheets drag grease. I apply it liberally and wipe off all I can. It helps prevent rusting of drag plates and smooths out the drag. The key is to wipe it all off. Most folks leave it coated and both lose drag pressure and it can gum up. I get within one pound of max drag at first when newly serviced and after a fish or two get the same drag pressure.
Hi Mark, Wonderful Vedio! I am making the knob direct fitment for Avet SX, not so sure about what size of bearings inside diameter for the knob shaft, can you please inform if the shaft diameter is about 5mm? Thanks
My suggestion is the use a digital caliper from HF. Measure in fractions like 3/8” or 3/16. Measure inside diam, outside diam and thickness. In that order search eBay for SS bearings. $1-$3 each!
I just purchased an avet mc 5.8 and straight out of the box I noticed everything is smooth except the drag sounds like its grinding when i pull line out. Will this go away on its own with time or do you think I should take it apart and try to find the issue ?
Anotherflores91 I oil everything on the main shaft from the belville washers, the shaft itself, the first large bearing that fits into the clicker side of the spool, the tubular washer and the two bearings that determine freespool. It all gets a small amount. I have had too much freespool!
hey mark, question. my avet sx isn't working right. when i tighten down the drag the crank wont move, but it will move when im in free spool and the drag is lightly tightened. do you have any idea whats going on? I'd really appreciate any help.
Sounds crazy, but I would take it apart one more time and follow the steps to make sure when you reassemble, you have the washing, spring, washer, and drag plate in the right order. And maybe double check the shield to see it's on securely.

Thank You for the video. It really helped me to repair my MXL5.8 MC reel. I could not find ANYONE that works on Avet reels.
Excellent edit. You are like the Bob Ross of reel maintenance!
Mark Outstanding video !! very thorough.. Thanks for taking the time to make it

Thanks for the video Mark, right on time for another season of fishing.
Hey Mark. Can you do a full right side of the reel rebuild for the Raptors? I'd like to do that service but would like to see it done first. Thx. DJ.
Yes it is in my bucket list.

very Nice Mark, Thank You for posting. Very helpful
hey mark what kind of oil do you use. i see you use inbox mx8 grease
I noticed your Vagabond shirt are you from south jersey?
I have yet to visit New Jersey, but would like to.

+Mark Mayo there is a bar in Atlantic city called Vagabond. Thanks just thought u had a shop around me.
No. Long Beach and Tehachapi
Can you also replace the drag washer if needed? I have a MXJ6/4mc i noticed when i cleaned it the a drag washer seems attached to the body.
Most Avet reels have permanently attached drag washers. If you grease them I cannot imagine ever needing to replace them. They are trucks!
@@markmayo2853 that sounds good... and yes i applied thin layer of drag greese on it. Thank you.

Be sure you have the spindle fully seated in the frame.

Mark, great stuff! I have an Avet MXL, are any of your "how to's" the same as the MXL?
I use Get Some oil for most of my reel needs. I like corrosion X for badly corroded screws

Service it like I’ve shown and FISH IT. All will be fine after a few fish.
What oil and grease you use?
Inox, I think.
Why not oil the bearings under the main gear?
