  • Basic service of an Avet JX Raptor 6/3 reel. The entire operation takes about 12 minutes with simple tools and supplies. See my avatar for a photo of this reel after besting a jackpot 67# bluefin tuna using 60# test on the Royal Star (thanks Blake).

    Just so you know, that driver comes in a hex version too (can find on amazon). It's handy to have both for the bit selection. Thanks for the video - super helpful to service my new JX
    Raptor.

    Hello Mark, thanks for the video! It will help me service my own reels. Looking to purchase a Megapro, but do you recommend the manual screw driver or the ratcheting one?

      I use the stainless model that does not ratchet.

    Oh boy I just found this gem. I just bought a used JX 6/3 raptor last year used it twice then shutdown. This is either going to be the greatest video ever or the worst.

      I have ten+ year old reels with original bearings. I fish hard!!! People who don’t service their reels have issues. Service yours!!!

      Only if you apply stupid drag pressure or don’t take care of them.

    Awesome video by the way. Very helpful 👌

    As soon as my helpful nephew wants to make another one, I will try a side plate service which removes the handle, gears and bearings.

    6:08 I noticed the gears popped out really easily. I feel like mine are jammed and I can’t remove them on Jx 6-3 mc raptor. Any suggestions. I did this service (reel is less than 2 years) plenty of oil/grease, just dirty. After service, high gear feel like it’s grinding on down stroke of handle when reeling. Any suggestions?

      Try cleaning the teeth inside with brake cleaner. Clean that stuff with an alcohol and grease again. Hopefully it will help

      Some are tight, some not. Always grease the insertion hole to help get them out next time.

    Hey Mark,
    Thanks for your time and effort, you have saved me tons of both. I have several AVET single speeds and know how to break down the handle to replace the pinion bearing. These seam to need replacement occasionally. Can you make a video on how to do this on a LX 2 speed?

      Only when the bearings are bad. Mine almost never go bad. I’ve had to with two reels in seven years. I use tons of drag too!

      Yes, all raptors are the same except you have to deal with the strap lugs on HX Raptors.

    Great video Mark. Just wondering if the magnets can be removed on the MC Cast to gain better freespool? Seems like all the Raptors from the SX to the JX come with the MC Cast which IMO does not freespool very well even on the lowest setting. I have an HX Raptor without it and it freespools very well.

      I agree but just fish the reel as is. It performs on the ocean as you want and I get the bait out there.

      Gear upside down

    • @markmayo2853
      @markmayo2853  Місяць тому

      Drag gear is either upside down or you installed the dog upside down. Easy to fix. Check for dog action BEFORE you close up the reel and reattach the right side plate.

    • @markmayo2853

      I am not an Avet insider I just buy them, service them and use them. I think the either the stock JX raptor or narrow HX raptor should be a match for your request. Save money and buy the Avet and easily service it yourself.

    The drag washer, you said you greased it.. I read on a forum of some guys doing the same and some guys saying that's a no no, I am confused as why to grease them or why not to grease them. What is the benefit? Could you please explain?

    • @markmayo2853
      @markmayo2853  7 років тому

      Yes I do. I am sad to report that I only get to sea four times to six times a year. I do think that leaving salt water in any reel over time does it in. After my last 2 day I managed all three reels in 30 minutes including setup and cleanup. You get better each time. My reels look new inside and always perform as I expect them to do.
