    I have 2 SX (one a raptor) and an MXL, LX, HX and HXJ and absolutely love them. I have them on a couple of the rainshadow rods the guys sell, and couple of united composite rods and one of the toro tamer travel rods and they cover all my saltwater fishing needs from here in NC bottom fishing, and on all my trips down to florida to fish the middle grounds and the dry tortugas. Mark and they guys are where all my rods and reels came from. Super helpful and really work hard to keep customers happy.

    Can you use the magnetic cast knob to also alter clicker tension in free spool once your bait is already in the water? For instance, if I'm fishing for fish that are spooked once they feel the tension/drag of that clicker when it's on. I believe you can do this with the Okuma Andros with their cast knob but I'm wondering if you can do it on the Avet reels, and in the particular the SX MC 5.3 model.

Also on bdourodoors I saw avet just came out with a sxj but I think that'd be a little bit too narrow for what I like

    hello CharkBait i recently bought a Proteus conventional boat rod prtb80xhf 8' 30-60 mono (70-120) braid well wanted to ask which avet reel would you recommend i pair this rod to thank you .

    • @CharkBaitUSA
      @CharkBaitUSA  5 років тому +1

      Toss out the braid rating and focus on the mono rating for the rod. With a 30-60, you're looking at a rod that will probably best load up at 40-50# (line test indicating appropriate drag setting - most important point since that determines the bend under load). So, with that as backup, I'd strongly lean towards the JX - prefer the 2 speed, The LX and HX can work for you, too. Remember, it's all about the drag setting as a function of the line test. Set the drag up properly so everything works in your favor.

    So which AVET models will seat in the Okuma Travel Rods? I am considering an AVET. The ALPS seat is approximately 3-centimeters wide and did not fit a few of the models that I tried out.
    I don’t want to mill any of the seating studs down either.

    • @CharkBaitUSA
      @CharkBaitUSA  5 років тому +1

      The Nomad rods using the ALPS seat will have a problem with the standard reel foot on the SX and MXJ/MXL reels. All other models are no problem. The SX and MXJ/MXL can work with replacement of the standard foot to the Narrow Reel Foot which we stock.

      The right model will depend upon the line test you wish to run. Line test determines how much drag is necessary, total line capacity needed. So, without more info I really can't offer much help. But, if it's your intent to run say leader tests of 50-60#, common for the trolling side of things and practical for other uses, then I'd lean towards the HX 5/2 or perhaps LX Raptor. If it's 40-50#, then a G2 LX can cover you.

    Mark, I know you're not a tinkerer with reels but if you get a chance buy a spool bearing kit for any Avet reel of yours and give it a whirl. I bought a Boca Bearing ceramic kit for my MXL and my basic soccer field casting test has me gaining nearly 25% in casting distance. No need to replace all the bearings, I think it's useless to buy all 6, but the spool bearings do make a difference. I added a brake bearing also but only because the brake bearing on mine had seen better days. For $40 or so, if I can get a jig to fish before some other guys it's well worth it to me.

    • @CharkBaitUSA
      @CharkBaitUSA  4 роки тому

      Been there done that on my MXL Raptor, and yes the benefits are there though the dividend is not great for me. I have learned many ways to screw up an otherwise good cast... Avet took care of me on that upgrade after I'd hammered the reel, or rather a large bluefin hammered the reel - she felt pretty squirrely after a 4 + hour fight and fail with pulled hook.The folks at Avet wanted to try out the ceramics, I was their guinea pig. I've not gone that route on my JX's. No doubt they'd benefit, but I'm also not convinced the ceramics will last as long as a very good stainless steel bearing, but I'm just a plunker and not that critical over the benefits provided thru upgrade. Others certainly can benefit more than I from that upgrade. These days I'm really not so competitive at the rail, 209 years ago, perhaps a different tale. If I were doing more "combat fishing" aboard a 1/2 or 3/4 day boat, no doubt I'd have a different perspective. But, I tend to ride the large long range boats, extended trips or private boat. In either of those situations, I'm not fishing in a competitive way, I pick my shots, catch a few fish and enjoy watching and learning from others. On our LR trips, I'm usually in the background taking pics and picking my shots for opportunities. I get the opportunity to fish, on the water for 30 days or so each year, so just a little luck can result in a plugged freezer for the year, and wife has me on a leash about how much to keep.

      @@CharkBaitUSA same reel I've just put them in the MXL Raptor. Happens to be my favorite Avet and probably second favorite reel next to the Makaira 10ii. I haven't really had any issues with spool bearings on my Avets. I have replaced a few brake bearings and pinion bearings over time but overall I haven't seen the Avet bearing issue you read about online. I think people are just negligent and fish 65lb line on an SX and have the drag ramped up to where the reel barely spins. Even on my own boat I'll be casting at surfacing fish along with ten other boats many times so the extra distance is a factor. Not a big factor, but enough to convince myself it's worth $40! If my wife knew how much I spend on fishing, I'd be very lonely at night but im very lucky in that she's a chef so I could bring in all the fish I want although I don't keep a ton of fish. Enough for sure, but I'm not like some guys I see that have 4 freezers for fish and haven't made a dent on fish they caught a couple years ago. All the best.

      @@jeffsmith825 - I bought my first MK10 after being spanked by that bluefin mentioned in my earlier post. That gave me the lower gear I wanted to turn the heads of fish and keep 'em coming my way. The MXL Raptor gets more casting duty, jigs, bait, iron. The MK10 for when things get more serious at 50# and 60, my MXL Rapt. and JX's at 40#. You are absolutely right about bearing failure, typically it's the fisherman's fault for trying to fish more drag than the reel was designed to do...thus a crunched bearing.

    • @jeffsmith825
      @jeffsmith825 4 роки тому

      @@CharkBaitUSA the MK10, to me, is the best reel I've ever fished. I was in the Bahamas last year and caught a 142lb yellowfin pitching live bait on the MK10. The next day used it to troll for wahoo. I have even caught 80+lb Amberjack on it. Stopping a big AJ before it gets into the rocks is a tough ask and the MK10 performed flawlessly. It's just a beautiful piece. Not my casting reel but it's damned versatile. I've gone to the Accurate ATD 30's for heavy trolling, but I feel like I could catch anything that swims on the MK10. We are on the same page.

    • @CharkBaitUSA
      @CharkBaitUSA  2 місяці тому

      Good question, I own some Avets with this feathure and a few from first generation Avets that don't. I see no difference in casting between the two. The magnet has a dial for control, from 1 to 5 settings, 5 being the most control.So, theres slways SOME minimal spool correction. If you are just spinning the spool on a reel you will notice that the spool will slow down more quickly than a non-MC reel because the magnet is applying some effect on rotation but it's minimal and of no consequence in real world casting situations. That's my take from working with the reels and fishing them. From a purist standpoint, theoretically the MC function may provide a very small amount of correction but I'll challenge anyone to actually note any difference whatsoever. In my own use, I'll run the MC dial up to 5 when tossing iron and drop it down to 1 for casting a bait (and I'll make greater use of my thumb to slow spool at the end of my cast).

      FishandHook TV The reel will cover your needs from 30# down to 20# test lines. What can you catch? Well I just got back from a 2 day charter, good yellowfin and bluefin fishing up to 60# fish. 30 and 40 was what we used, dropping down to 25# on the leader at times. The MXL would have handled most all of the fish. So, on a 3/4 you are in good shape I'd say. Next rig for you would be a 40# outfit, for that the JX is tops.

    Hi Mark, awesome videos, I just wanted to share something interesting I found out with a buddy of mine who land based shark fishes as well. I was testing the drag on my avet LX with a properly calibrated scale and I found that, even with the preset nowhere near locked down, pushing 21lbs at strike, and 30lbs at full with perfect free spool too, I had it attached to a rod but the preset could easily be clicked down 10 more turns and we already well exceeded the drag ratings no problem. my friend has an 80w and said if he cranks the preset up he pushes 100lbs easily, I thought he was joking but I tested it out for my self on my LX and damn, they really do put out at least 60% more drag than there rated... by any chance have you or your customers noticed this as well?

    • @CharkBaitUSA
      @CharkBaitUSA  3 роки тому

      Yeikes talk about a late reply... Yes, Avet reels can produce more drag than manufacturer states BUT one should not exceed their numbers. You're moving the spool across a plane, go too far and right side spool bearing can be damaged. Do not exceed mfg parameters for best long term performance. Those that do go beyond the limit will pay a service price replacing bearings.

    What is the purpose of the tension knob on lever drag side? Thanks, newbie here!

    • @raleighthomas3079
      @raleighthomas3079 4 роки тому

      nmigliore that is NOT a spool tension knob, it is the pre-set drag adjustment. That is how you adjust the drag RANGE of the lever. IN Freespool ( lever back ) you adjust the knob more or less, the use the lever and push it up to ‘strike’ position, and check the drag with a scale. If you want more or less poundage, go to freespool with the lever, turn the pre-set, and back to strike with the lever. Check with scale. Same thing with max drag position. The strike and full positions are not independent though. Set for one position, the other is what it is. Hope that helps.

    Which one do you recommend for cod haddock pollack fishing?

    • @CharkBaitUSA
      @CharkBaitUSA  5 років тому

      It's going to be a matter of the line test you need to run. That will determine the capacity needed and importantly the drag setting required - and that will influence which model reel makes the most sense. I'll offer that likely you may be running say 50# braid, with a topshot of mono/leader of maybe 30#. If so, look towards the MX G2 series of reels.

    • @kobi1125
      @kobi1125 5 років тому

      I’m running 50# braid maybe 80# fluorocarbon because it has less stretch then mono but strong then braid. If I’m fishing braid I’m fishing a 50# mono or fluorocarbon top shot.. so which one should I pick?

    • @CharkBaitUSA
      @CharkBaitUSA  5 років тому

      @@kobi1125 So, you'll need a reel capable of fishing 50# line (that's the lightest on the reel) so having a drag capable of pulling 15 lbs of drag measured at strike is where you should be (and best to have more than that available). So, a G2 JX can cover you well, with a Raptor version even better, the MXL or MXJ Raptors can also cover from a drag standpoint. The low gear on the JX will have more pulling power, it's 4:1 on the MX and 3:1 on the JX. If the fish are say under 50 lbs, the low gear ratio not so critical. But, if the fish are larger, no doubt dropping down in gearing is beneficial. Next consideration, depth. If under say 300 ft, line capacity won't be an issue either way. I'm leaning towards the MXJ or JX - both the narrower versions within the MX and JX/LX series.

    • @MarkSmith.CharkBait
      @MarkSmith.CharkBait 7 років тому

      Can't really speak to the rod, don't work with Lami. It's probably a question of line test, drag setting, that's what's going to influence the rod selection. The SX is good for up to 10lbs measured at strike. So, figure that based upon it's drag capability the reel can fish UP TO 30lb lines properly. If that fits with the rod, then it should be just fine as a match.

    I finally found an Avet reel at a local store but the storekeeper didn't know anything about them. They had a HXW on the shelf.
    Now that I actually saw one first hand, I want to buy one that is:
    HXW size.
    Lever drag feature.
    RAPTOR for higher drag.
    2 Speeds.
    MC for aided cast control.
    Which model number do I need to order?

      Visit our website for the specs: www.charkbait.com/cs/csrAvet-2.htm
      The JX Raptor covers the drag mentioned, but will hold more like 500 yds of 60# braid. The MXL Raptor or even the MXJ will cover the line test and capacity mentioned, and fish those lines fine with it's given drag capability, but you are mentioning drag levels greater than needed for the line test mentioned. No reason for the extra drag pressure, given it should be about 30% of the line test being used.

    Avet are normal reel with lower drag then Accurate. So don't expect a miracle from it. you just get what you paid for.

    • @MarkSmith.CharkBait
      @MarkSmith.CharkBait 8 років тому +2

      More than a normal reel, and more than a normal value given their performance and construction materials - note MACHINED ALUMINUM, not cast or a composite, excellent freespool for great casting, etc. Yes, Accurate's do have higher drag, and now they also have longer warranty life and factory servicing during that period, and yes you do pay more and get more - but it's subjective. No getting around the fact that Avet reels are excellent pieces. Now if you take Raptor verses Accurate, we have a more even playing field - apples to apples and a more interesting comparison to make.

    • @MarkSmith.CharkBait
      @MarkSmith.CharkBait 7 років тому

      Some models have more, some less, depends upon what is being compared. Taking a standard first generation reel compared to Accurate, well we're looking at half the price...or less for the Avet. Now, if we go Raptor as the comparing piece to Accurate, then the Avet offers more drag capability, magnetic cast control, etc.

      @@danmadgett1513 solid/hollow it makes no difference in terms of diameter or “drag.” Hollow has several benefits as line tests increase. Knot diameter drops, allows for hollow to hollow splicing, capable of spliced loop for fishing wind-on leaders, allows for in-line knot less connection of leader to braid for 100% test connection vs a knot connection which by definition losses test… many advantages of hollow core but subjective whether those benefits are justified.
