Boy, that came out really nice. I love the little reveal between the lid and body of the box. Sometimes it's the simplest little things that give a project that extra oomfh. Gotta try that the next time I build a box. Takes it to another level.
Thanks, Don! I got the idea from Steve's table he builds in the TWW course where he puts a reveal around the outside of the plywood inset to hide any slight inaccuracies!

Very nice shop, I'm jealous of your dust collection system and sawstop. Oh yeah, good looking box too. Gotta love the smell of that dark walnut being worked!
A basic box can be so nice and so easy to build with practice . I am at a point in woodworking where I'm ready to go to another level and in most cases it's the lid on a box that I admire as I do with your box , really nice ! I have 2 small projects I want to do when time will allow and after .....might try mimicking yours !
Fyi... if you visit a school supply store you can find a sharpener that teachers use to sharp the big crayons. I use it for sll size dowels and it beats using the power sander. Exceptional build with great craftmanship.!!!
With the method you have shown, you only have a 3 corner matched box, but where the 4th meets the 1st, there is no match. If you start with something like a 4/4 piece of lumber and split it lengthwise down the middle on your band saw you can make a 4 corner match. One half of this book-matched piece becomes a back and a side, the other half becomes a front and a side, giving you a full 4 corner matched wrap.
Thanks, TeeKay! My hand was forced a little with the lid because that's the biggest router bit I own... but I'm happy with how it turned out! Thanks for watching as usual!
Beautiful job done without music and other video tricks. Love the sound of the hand plane against the timber. How did you achieve the wrap. Excellent box and finish.
Thanks for the speedy reply. I thought that might be the case. as I said I learned on my own in a day how to use the basic slid rule and later use it a lot when I was a CNC Machinist and programmer many years ago for Lockheed in Burbank. I became a collector of them in all sizes and love working with them. Then came the tiny calculator. Just Like Video music ways to Radio that was the end of the slide rule. Thanks again and no need to reply to this note I know you're very busy.
Great story! Happy to reply :) I haven't yet learned to use the slide rule but I plan to soon... though mostly for fun. Hard to imagine really replacing a pocket calculator 😇
Where are you moving to? I am in NJ and belong to South Jersey woodworkers guild. I think, need to pay my fee..lol. Your woodworking style is right up my alley.
Hey mate. Very nice work. Couple tips: shallow cuts to separate the lid then finish off with a hand saw will have less risk of damage. Also I'm surprised you didn't get burning on the lid routing... if you do, try a nearly full depth pass, them a shallow pass
Wow that's a great idea for separating the lid, I will definitely do that next time. After finishing with a hand saw, I'm assuming you hand plane the surfaces flat and smooth? Is that tough to get a crisp/clean fit (hand planing the two surfaces to get them to match up exactly)?
@@dkbuilds If you do a full depth table saw cut for the long sides and a shallow cut for the short sides, you can plane the hand sawn short sides flush with the table saw cut. You could also use a chisel plane, take the bulk off with a flush trim saw, or even a chisel would work okay.
Beautiful box~! I like the way you used the rounded dowels for suspending the tray. Different than using the strips lining the perimeter of the interior like I see most often.
An absolutely beautiful g]creation! I am curious though why are the hinges sticking out behind the back of the box? Would the box not open wide enough to remove the tray if the hinges were set further in the box?
Thank you Tamera! The hinges are sticking out of the back because they were designed that way... I agree, they are not my favorite either! I definitely could have bought hinges that were invisible, and the box could still open wide enough.
Beautiful box that's how I try to do all my jewelry boxes I make but I lost my place to be able to make stuff so it's been about a year since I have made anything and it is killing me LOL
It's actually insulation specifically made for garage doors. I'm not sure exactly what brand but there are many options available if you search online. What I have is fiberglass which actually doesn't insulate sound very well at all, but I'm sure there are more options specifically for soundproofing.

Thanks Scott! Good question. I first used the jointer to get one side of the board flat, but the board was too wide for my jointer, so a small notch was left. I used the hand plane to get rid of just the notch, so that entire face is flat. Then, I used the planer to get the other side parallel to that face. If I had a wider jointer I wouldn't need the hand plane at all.
@@dkbuilds ah ha. Didn't noted that was on the jointed side. Thanks for explaining. The wood whisper did a cool move with a planner slide when jointer wasn't big enough. If you are interested
Beautiful box design. If you want all four corners to be a continuous grain flow then next time resaw a thicker piece of lumber and use the resaw side as your outside. Just too pretty of a design to not have that fourth corner flow. Always blows peoples minds to see it seamless.
What is that adapter from your shop vac to sander. I think we have the same ones Ridgid shop vac? (Judging by the hose clip) I know i have that sander. Ive needed a way to attach my sander to my shop vac though so I got a meh way of doing it now

you should never glue a solid wood panel if it starts to move with seasonal contraction and is held back by the glue it could break in half
