What would you use your box to store?
Brilliant box keep it up
Thanks 😀
Great video. I've been a carpenter for over thirty years and am now graduating to woodworking. Totally different way to look at working with wood. I have made many different types of projects, but always come back to making boxes. Thanks for explaining wrap around grain, I'll try it again.
That's awesome, welcome to the woodworking world! I hope you have as much fun as I do :)
Beautiful box! Straight forward tutorial. Thanks. I love walnut and look forward to giving this a go.
I have been fascinated with the Golden Ratio in nature and it's application to wood creations. Aethetics...the eye knows.
Thank you. And thanks for watching :)
A great detailed video. Box looks great. An idea for a future box might be to recess the bottom only hallway in and chamfer the bottom half to create another shadow line. Also I would have rounded over the tops of those small pieces you added on the bottom to make them softer to the touch.
Thank you, and great ideas suggested too :)
Thank you for sharing your experience and talents! I am just getting started in this type of woodworking. Be safe and God bless!
Thank you, I appreciate that - stay safe out there yourself, and happy woodworking! 😊
If I may make a suggestion, prior to glue up. After taping the sections together from the outside, flip it over and tape over what will be your mitered glue joints carefully. Once you have protected what will be your gluing area, finish the inside of the box. Stain or seal what ever you want. Once those are complete, remove the tape from the inside miter joints. Now you can glue your joints and close up the assembly. When dry, the inside of your box is completed. Now you can concentrate on the out side. This really improves the quality of the interior finish which can be difficult to finish. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the great tip, I will have to try that in my next build! 😊
Learned a lot from this video!
I'm glad to hear it. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for these videos. Like you, I started learning woodworking a few years ago through UA-cam and other social media sources. I don't have a wonderful shop like yours and I'm certainly not as skilled as you at this point, but I'm still learning and you're one of the reasons I keep going. Thank you so much!!!
My pleasure; that just made my day to hear, thanks for sharing that ❤️
Just a little tip: When lining up the sides, butt the bottom edge up against a straight edge like your TS fence, you get instant alignment and it lines up the box sides perfectly for taping them up.
Thanks for the tip :)
For someone who hasn’t been woodworking so long you are, you are very good at explaining (teaching) what you are doing💪🏻 I too have been making boxes this year, I decided not to use wrapping paper when giving gifts and use for smaller items wooden boxes up to 30x40cm. I gift tea, chocolate, wine and such so boxes are appropriate size but I do boxes for Photos, postcards, playing cards, candles etc. my boxes don’t turn out 100 percent perfect but imo they re hand made so no need for the perfection….
Thx for showing, most definitely some tips I could use, glad to see you back and take care of that neck
Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
I love the idea of making boxes to use as gift wrapping. I may just steal that one :) thanks for watching and your continuous support.
Awesome job!
Thank you very much 😊
nice job of explaining your techniques
Thanks for watching, I’m glad it was helpful!
Very nice!
Thanks! Glad you like it! 😊
What a terrifically equipped workshop for having been wood working for only 3 years. And your skill set is remarkable for only 3 years.
Thank you, appreciate your very kind feedback!
Great to see you again Winnie, been too long! The box turned out great! I made one last year for my Nephew to store his watch. Hope you are well, look forward to seeing more content soon.
Thanks Cliff, I’m doing well, how are you? A watch box is a great idea. Perhaps with a glass lid?
@@standishwoodstory Doing well here Winnie! The box I made didn't have a glass lid, although that would have been a great idea. He wanted his name engraved on it so I used my CNC. Looks like you have a similar mower as me.
🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩 I haven't built a box since highschool but I've been delving back into woodworking slowly and this looks like an amazing project
Thanks, glad to hear it caused some inspiration, looking forward to seeing yours when done :)
Such a beautiful project. I really like the maple inlay. I would use this box for my cufflinks, tie clips and watch bands. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching and supporting my channel!
Loved the in-depth way you spoke about this, tips and tricks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love it, best video explaining the continuous grain pattern, the golden triangle, and I never thought about the width of the wood. Will be making keepsake for new grandchildren.
Thank you, and that is some lucky grandchildren getting keepsake boxes, I’m sure they will love them :)
Nice job on the box! The new shop looks to be working well for you.
Thank you. Yes I’m feeling more settled in the new shop, it was great to put them into action again and see if my positioning of them actually made sense.
This is a great details video... I am new to woodworking and self taught from practical and theory from UA-cam :) This is a stunning box with great skills... Keep up the great work and love to see more videos
Thanks so much and welcome to the world of woodworking, UA-cam is a fantastic resource, and I started the same way, so keep picking up new projects to learn from and you’ll be making what ever you want in no time 🙌
The golden ratio exists everywhere in nature so why not in a box design as well. Makes sense!!! I would use the box on my desk to keep my work stuff organized. Thanks for another great video👍
Good idea. Staying organized is key, and boxes sure are great for that:)
Wowser love the Canadian flag😅 Love the way that you explain the shoebox theory😊
Thanks, glad you liked the box and the explanation!
Very good teaching points. You inspire me to forge ahead and try making nice boxes. Thanks! 🙂
Thank you for the kind words @briangillis! Good skill with your box making and have a positive day!
Thank you for the detailed instructions, I am going to build your box that will be my first, it will be for my wife of fifty one years who I lost August 3rd. It will be her resting place. Kinda sounds morbid it’s the truth and I want her close, I am using Tiger wood, wish me luck, I watched almost thirty videos until I found yours that explains by detail. I will post a photo.
That’s a beautiful project, I wish you the best.
Nothing wrong with that. I think your wife would be honored to rest in the first box you ever built. I used to knock out shipping crates all day long. I’m here to learn how to make an heirloom box.
@@ChrisWhitley-tx1oz Thanks
Simple but beautiful and the maple is a nice accent on the top. Great job! I too, enjoy making boxes. They make great Christmas gifts.
You may want to think about someday replacing the original miter gauge on the table saw. It would most likely improve the accuracy of the mitered corners and would add versatility to the miter gauge.
Keep up the great content. JimE
Thank you appreciate the kind feedback, and a new miter gauge would be great, I’ll take any excuse to upgrade a tool 😉
Nice box. One suggestion - Do the rebate while it is still a single board.
Rebates can sometimes break out a corner. Especially on a router table. So if the board is still over length, it wont be a problem.
Thanks for the tip, I'll try that next time! :)
Making rabbet while still single board could only cause, at most, one blown out corner instead of the potential for four blown out corners doing the rabbets on each of the four individual pieces. Blown out corners are more likely to happen on the crosscut (shorter) edges than they are on the long grain edges - so just prepare for that. Can also do rabbets on top and bottom after box glued into it's final shape - a little awkward but can be done on router table - and you'll just have to chisel the corners square.
Nice build and video.
Thanks I’m glad you enjoyed it
Nice box!
Thank you 😊
Nice box.
Thanks!
1.618, using it for sure. Thanks for the video.
Let me know how it turns out for you :)
I like your workshop I have same sawstop cabinet.boxes are nice to make.iam practicing on cutting half blind dovetails and thru dovetails. Have you tried cutting dovetails on boxes.? Australia.
I have not tried dovetails, maybe one day, I think I need to practice my hand tool skills first.
THANKS FOR THE VIDEO
My pleasure. Thanks for watching.
Love the box and I know about the golden ratio for getting the size for the sides of the box but haven’t heard anything for the height. I would think that their would also a rule or a ratio that, and I do know sometimes it is all personal preference. Any insight would be greatly appreciated . Thank you
That is a very good question, regarding the height, I am not sure. I’ll have to do some research on that one.
did you say you have woodworking for three years? Well done you will go far with your positive approach. Julien
Thank you. And yes just about 3 years, with 1.5 of those being mostly full time which has made a huge difference just in the fact that I was able to learn by testing more things out quicker. I love woodworking and to share what I learned. How about yourself?
I have been woodworking for 50 plus years still love it and love seeing young people do it. I never get tired of learning and getting better. Julien.
nice
😊 thanks
Love the content of this channel. Your respect for the tools almost puts you in awkward positions though.
Thanks for following along :)
Hey now that’s a really well built box fella! 😂
👍
How do you make sure the box is square so the bottom fits or do you just rack it after the glue dries to make it fit?
I test with a square both before the glue up and after. The racking clap is also great to keep everything aligned. You can also pre cut your lid before the glue up and leave it attached while the glue hardens (just don’t glue the lid;)
Long time no see! Hello!!!
Hello John, how’s it going? :)
@@standishwoodstory #2 daughter is about to start college in a few weeks. Things are exciting around here. I haven't been in the shop much lately. But I'll def try this box too - thanks for that. What's been going on with you?
En rigtig fin box❤
Tak :)
Simple, yet so complicated, The Box LOL
😂 yup indeed

Manage indeed you shall
So, i just stopped after you resawed , 😮 i couldn't believe you resawed it completely through on a table saw, you should have mentioned how dangerous it is to do that, took the tip of my finger off doing that when it kicked the outer board back , should leave about one eighth and hand saw the rest. Now ill watch the rest ,
Two points on that. No I did not resaw it all the way through on the tablesaw. But 2. I will agree that I did not make a point to mention that leaving a 1/8 of an inch is key for safety, nor did I show mine not being cut all the way thorough. Safety is always my number #1 priority to share so thanks for the reminder to show that a bit more clear in the future!
There is something very beautiful about a woman that creates things with her hands.
Thank you
