Nothing melts away stress more than a skilled artisan planing a beautiful piece of wood. Always love the big reveal of the final wood texture as the finish is first applied. Beautiful work as always.

3:07 i always love the metal ringing sound of the ryoba saws at the end of the cut. it sounds like a ceremonial gong anouncing the cut is finished

My congratulations to you. A lovely box and a lovely video. After more than 45 years woodworking (and 40 years of rugby), my neck, back and shoulders are shot. So, I can only use hand tools for a very limited period. Still love the sound and feel of a sharp tool on hardwood.
If those mitres hold without reinforcement, then good on you. I must admit that I always add keys. I had several failures before. I admire your courage in texturing the top after the box had been assembled; I would have done that before in case I messed up and/or didn’t like the result.
I see you using Tung oil. I have to say that I stopped using products like Tung oil, Teak oil or even 1 pack hard wax oils since 2 pack became available. With 2 pack, the piece can be handled within an hour; so freeing up my bench and also stopping dust ruining the finish. Late last year, the Wood Whisperer published a video reviewing all 2 pack HWO. The winner was Natura Onecoat. If you get the chance, I’d suggest you try some. It is very good; far better in my view than any others.

I made a similar box at school 40+ years ago except my cruel teacher insisted on hand cut dovetails. I think it was the best project i made at school. Your video brought back memories and your box is fantastic. Although i can hear my woodwork teacher Mr Floyd shouting “don’t sit your place on the bench like that, it will get blunt”. Not sure how true that was but until today I always place my plane on its side when i put it down.

That debate continues on to this day. Blunting a steel edge with the material that it cuts? Not really. The other side of the issue is that putting the plane down on its side exposes the blade to damage from other tools on the bench, and unless done extremely gently, the blade can be jarred out of square by putting it down on its side.

Paul Sellers says that it doesn’t matter if you leave a plane in the upright position on your bench, I will go with the advise of real master craftsman over the advise of a school teacher any day

I loved how u used the gouging tool to make that beautiful look to the top piece of the box. I have to say my favourite part is always watching the maker finish off the piece with oils or wax or whatever finish they decide to use and that music was pretty special too bro. About 18 months ago I began to play about a bit with woodworking and found I had a bit of a passion for it. I don't have ur skills but I am learning as I go. I will have a lot of mistakes along the way but the nice part is making something with our own hands bcos these skills will be lost one day in the future unless great ppl like u keep it going.
I have found some really fine woodworkers who use mostly hand tools. It's cool to watch u guys at work and see how much u put into a piece.
What is the make of Hand plane u were using there man? It looks a very expensive one. It just has a heavy feel to it.
Keep up the great work man. That's a piece to be happy with. I would be if I could make it.
What was the plane called u used to cut the rebate in the box sides early in this video? I'm new to hand planes and I would love to have a plane to could cut those rebates and sweet looking grooves into nice wood.
Sorry pal I'm waffling on a bit here.
I only just found ur channel 15 mins ago, watched this video and I really enjoyed it bro. I will be watching for more great content now too.. Take it easy man. TAKE CARE

Are you chiselling down onto the nice oak (maybe) board to reduce tear out, because it's harder than cheaper wood or because it's just what you had on hand?

I really enjoy the variety of design elements you use. I read about this skill in a book called, "The why and how of wood working" I see you always incorporate tactile features, like gouging, and carving. This helps provide a sensory connection during use. You also add wonderful proportions and color contrast making the piece look visually interesting. and usable. I value your emphasis on these details. Great Craftsmanship and Best wishes!

Very nicely done. One critique. By using a single long board for the case only three of the joints will be grain matched. A shorter board resawn would give you a grain match on all four corners. Excellent texturing of the top.
