Making a Stupid Easy Storage Box! Simple Process - BIG RESULTS!!

  • So many woodworking techniques are crammed into this wood storage box project! I made this custom wood box to hold a laptop and other items for someone. She came up with the dimensions based on her items, but the box is approximately 20” long x 10” wide x 3.75” tall. The body of the wood box is made from air dried walnut that was chainsaw milled locally. The lid is maple from a tree that milled about 1.5 years ago.
    There are some pretty fun woodworking skills in this one. When you break it down, it's a stupid easy woodworking project. There aren't a lot of components so you can focus on doing your best at what is there. I used my spline jig to put splines in the corners of the storage box. The box also has a divider so I had to use some techniques at the router table to get the dados just right.
    The laptop storage box was finished with Osmo Top Oil. I really like using that finish. It’s simple to apply and looks great!

    What a fun project! This was a commission piece for someone needing a storage box. It was fun to use a few different techniques that we've applied in previous videos and combine them into this project.

    I'm so glad I found your channel! You are like the Bob Ross of woodworking, very creative and make it comfortable for me to learn and try to build something. I'm very new to woodworking and I'm creating some pretty great boxes thanks to you. Keep it up.

      Funny because Bob Ross is sort of what I'm going for! 🤣 I don't get caught up in measurements. "This looks about right" is how I design things.

    I took up woodworking as a hobby a few years ago and during that time I've learned a lot from youtube woodworking videos in general but your videos are for sure at the top of the heap! (The background music is always good too :)) Keep up the good work! You're are a great Teacher, Thanks!!!

    That's a nice box. Think the only thing I would have done differently, Is the handle. Have a 10 or 15 degree angle along the front and back would make it easier to grip and would look cool too.

    • @NewtonMakes
      @NewtonMakes  2 роки тому +1

      I thought about it but kept it straight to better mirror the tray. Either way it would have turned out good.

    I love it. Sure is beautiful with that walnut. Can I ask a question as a newbie trying to learn and paranoid of wood movement...did you do anything on the bottom of the box to allow movement? Did you need to?? I get so confused on what needs to be done vs. not, etc. Thanks for any tips!

    Why do you thicken the board crown down cup up instead cup down crown up?
    I was always told to have 2 points of contact on the bottom to prevent rocking?!

  • @jonathanhamilton5752
    @jonathanhamilton5752 2 роки тому

    How do you get your splines so long, extending out from the corner. I've done splines before but they aren't that long to avoid cutting all the way through. What's the thickness of the walnut? Maybe thicker than I was using? Nice work and nice jig!

    • @NewtonMakes
      @NewtonMakes  2 роки тому +1

      I set the box in the spline jig next to the blade. I make sure that the blade is not higher than the inside corner of the box. The higher the blade, the longer the spline. I try to have it as close to the inside corner as possible. The thickness of the material is dependent on the size of the box. I'm pretty sure I said the thickness in the video.

  • @mrxmry3264

    That spline jig looks very familiar. Got the idea from kings fine woodworking?

    • @NewtonMakes
      @NewtonMakes  2 роки тому +1

      No, never seen his stuff. I honestly just pictured what I needed in my head and made it. I imagine it's a common design.

  • @in2rock275
    @in2rock275 2 роки тому

    Great project and craftmanship, BUT...shouldn't the handle be similar to the one on the tray raising it off the top of the lid or at the least, beveled/angled on the sides so you can have something to grab onto? I would think just the strip down the center would make the handle hard to grasp, especially no higher than it is and with a lid this large. Or am I missing something?

    Nice project, but if you are going to cover the bottom with fabric, why waste the walnut for the bottom of the box?

    • @NewtonMakes
      @NewtonMakes  2 роки тому +2

      I had fun in the shop making something cool which is never a waste. It may be picked up and people would see the bottom. Plus, I wasn't sure if I would add fabric when I made it. If you've watched my videos you'll know I go on the fly most of the time.
