One of the things I really anjoy in your videos is the simple yet highly intelligent procedures you come up with to solve problems. For example, the method you show for drilling the dowels dead center is pure genius. The simple solutions are always the best and you're the master of working these out and to our immense benefit, including them in the videos. Thanks for sharing!!
doh, been wanting to do the cosman style hinges for a while, but didnt figure out a good way to drill the center hole, your solution is SO simple, and SO good!
Glad you liked it. I reckon Rob's tools would be more accurate but if you don't mind messing around setting it up (and possible re-drilling the odd one) it does work. :)
Always a smart, simple (ok not always simple!) way to do everything - at least when Neil is involved - loved the inverse drilling idea on the tiny dowels. Love the video as always, and beautiful boxes.
what I really love about this channel is that he never shy away from showing mistakes yet still managed to produce such elegant works, and I dont know..... Australians are very likable.
@@flumpyhumpy had to google "Pom" interesting he doesnt sound British, hmm that may explain why he doesnt use that colorful language I so love about Australians.
Although the hidden hinge box had a small glue line, it was still an amazing result. Seriously, these boxes are brilliant and I turned to my Wife and said I have to give some of these a go. Thanks to you for sharing, as well as Rob Cosman, it‘s been very inspiring.
I can barely cut a straight line on the table saw and you cut that nearly perfectly with a hand saw. Love watching your videos, but I despair of ever being a tenth as skilled :-) Great work!
The leather is very complimentary to the finished box. I enjoyed the making of the hinges!! Looks like you need to give your bench a little TLC, another project for another day. Thanks for sharing :) !
To have worked with wood for several years, it is a real pleasure to watch your immense talent, but the people who watch you must know that it takes a lot of patience and determination to achieve such a result. And congratulations, you are super well equipped with tools
I'm always amazed at how much can go into the making of a "simple" box. It's frustrating because we say to ourselves "Oh, this should be pretty simple". But it never is. We get so wrapped up in trying to make it perfect that we sacrifice the fun. At least I tend to do that. Thanks for showing the various hinge techniques.
The good news is the counselling for my inferiority complex has been bought forward. The bad news is after this video I am going to need a lot more. Yet more superb work and ideas.
I'm a fine woodworker, "maker" as well. I 100% respect your gangster. One of the best my friend. Keep this coming. Gives me ideas and inspiration for my builds
Uhh... how could they be better?? How could he improve these incredible works of craftsmanship?? This man is very humble about his gift that he shares with the world. Like like like like!!
I think that my favourite one is the box with the leather in it, I love the inset hinges and the Yosegi on the top. The last hinge was really amazing as well. 👍
That last hinge is awesome! Well, they were all awesome, but that one especially so. And the way you got the hole drilled in the center was brilliant! Good work as always, sir.
Your attention to detail and subsequent due diligence getting each piece just right before joining is both admirable and humbling. You have set the bar extremely high for the rest of us. Well done, sir.

Boy you are just killing it!! Those are so beautiful and well made. The aesthetic is perfect! I've been watching you for a while and see your growth as a woodworker!
They are all lovely boxes but my favourite hinge is without doubt the one with the small square hinges (the third one). When they are made so carefully and with such attention to detail it is a feast for the eyes and deserves to be on display. As winter is getting closer day by day, and more time will be spent in the workshop, I will definitely attempt to make a box with hinges like that 😀
OK, putting the bit in the vise and then putting the dowel in the chuck is brilliant!! I would have tried and tried to drill into the dowel and ended up having a fit, destroying everything, selling my tools and finding a new hobby
I've watched the hinge series a couple of times now, gotta say that the box joint hinges on the outside are becoming my favorite. The Rob Cosman style I've done and it always brings some satisfactory ooh's and ahh's , but there's a very definite appeal to the detail in those little box joint hinges. Gonna have to give 'em a go.
Beautiful work. I don't envy your patreon trying to make the choice of which box to choose. They're all so beautiful I'd have a very hard time. They each have something different and equally lovely to choose from. I loved to watch talented men at work. 🤗
Good idea with scraping the leather first. My best guess however, is what you scraped off, is waterproofing. If you scrape it off though, there's a risk of tearing the leather so maybe, instead of scraping it, you can go over it with acetone or rubbing alcohol. If you don't know how to tell if it's waterproofing or not, just use a pipelet or something and put a few water droplets onto the leather. If it soaks in, it's not waterproof but if it just stays there, then it's waterproof. The waterproofing will prevent water based glues from sticking which could be why you previously had trouble gluing the leather, so I hope this helps :)
I've tried acetone before and it didn't help, I've also tried scuffing it with sandpaper and that didn't help either. I've tried half a dozen different glues, not just water based ones and nothing works. :)
@@PaskMakes okay, well at least I tried, thanks for getting back to me. Have a great day :) By the way, I absolutely love that second and third box the most out of the four boxes I love your videos and would love to see some log carving videos if you can. Like get the log and carve like your logo or something into the middle? I think that'll be really cool
Thank you so much for your videos, although I use no power tools; beeing trained by mr Sellers; I still love to see whats going on with Cosman, and now yourself. Im really happy I found your channel, as you do give me some really good tips. Thank you so much for your great work, and your easy way of speech is most appreciated by a Norwegian like my self. Thank you ever so much, and keep it up please and thank you
You have my eternal admiration for your creativity and skill. I love every one of these boxes and I would never use a one since I have nothing I could put in them worth as much as the box itself. Amazing job, Neil.
I bought a few more hand tools, old school miter box, more clamps... it could take generations for me to get even close to what Pask can do... but I am trying to apply what I am learning. Thanks for the motivation and happy distraction during this odd time
Beautiful work! Just a suggestion on a good leather adhesive. I do bookbinding and use a 50/50 mix of PVA glue for bookbinding.. you can find it on Amazon.. and wheat paste that I make up at home.. there are recipes for that online.. quick google search will get that.
Great work, and your descriptions of each step make it so much easier to understand, and convince us that we too can make beautiful projects ourselves.
Beautiful box builds! Loved all the techniques and SOP's for them...learned a lot. Thank You Neil great videography and lessons. I'll be trying some of them soon!
I've been making leather goods for a couple years. If you want a proper bond with leather, contact cement is the way to go, and if the surface to glue is too pristine it's a good thing to rough it up with a mid grit sandpaper before applying the glue. Hope that helps in future projects!
An inspiration to us all. That's really cool engineering on those hinges, me i would of gone straight for steel or brass, wouldn't have even thought of wood. Keep up the good work mate, awesome job!!!
I agree with a previous comment, the way you drilled the dowels was great. Wish I could come up with things like that for my projects without having to steal it from the smarter people...
I'm starting to think this is the last real woodworking channel on youtube. Everyone else has gone to CNC machines or just pocket screws everything together. While I don't always agree with the design or finishes he uses (everyone has their own tastes) there is absolutely no denying that Pask has some incredible talent and doesn't do everything the easy way just to get more youtubes moneys.
Perfect! exactly what I was looking for! A creative way to avoid buying Rob's center hold jig.
The drill press set up deserves an award!
