    Cutest ending to a video I’ve seen in a while. I did the same with piano but had many lessons, 50 years ago. Lol. I love the two contrasting woods and really love the two contrasting finishes. That walnut looked like a stone tile almost. I just took up whittling in my older age which was probably not the brightest idea for a lady with arthritis, but I’m finding my hands are hurting less and less. I take that as a win. Also, made each of my family a small little catch all bowl for Christmas. 14 of those strengthened my hands well. I must say they turned out well and I hope they will remember where they got them one day. Thank you for the knowledge passed along. Merry Christmas. ✌🏻🤍🤞🏽

Beautiful little box and I have never thought about using my spacer blocks at the table saw like you'd have and also that is a great little trick to keep the cover up!! Outstanding as always!

    Beautiful box. Can you explain the dados for the dividers a little more. I’m having trouble picturing/understanding why the back has through dados but the front requires stop dados.

    • @quillwoodworks
      @quillwoodworks  2 місяці тому

      Thanks for watching. The rabbet at the rear of the box sits lower than the rabbet in the front of the box. This is to facilitate the tilt-back lid. If I made the dados in the front through dados then there would be a notch left because the divider isn’t wide enough to fill the dado in the front. In the back of the box the divider is flush with the rear rabbet. I hope that makes sense!

  • @1deerndingo

    Very nice box. Nice technique. Nice video. Q? Why do you prefer to trim the width of the blanks and rebate after you've cut the lengths to size.

    • @quillwoodworks
      @quillwoodworks  5 місяців тому

      Thanks for watching, Dan. With the width of the piece, I may sometimes cut that first. But with the rabbets…I prefer to do them later when they’re not so long because I find it easier to get even pressure as I pass it over the blade or bit resulting in a slightly more accurate depth. Hope my explanation makes sense and thanks again!

    Along with wood working I play guitar too. I really like that sunburst guitar. Had a roommate in the Marines in 1979 who had one just like it that I really admired.
    I have a tobacco sunburst Les Paul and a similar looking Fender Acoustic along with several others and a bass.
    The 2 I mentioned are my everyday go to guitars. I have a black, white and gray camo pattern Dean Dimebag Darrel V that I never play. Gonna have to change that! My brother got the one that's black with lightening bolts on it. We got them in a set from a guy who was selling them cheap so he could get rid of them and get something else.

    Good video, great box! I need one of those small brass hammers. Where did you get it?

    • @quillwoodworks
      @quillwoodworks  7 місяців тому

      That is from Lie Nielsen. Sometimes I feel like it was a slightly silly, extravagant purchase but I do enjoy using it every chance I get. Thanks for watching!

    I think I might cut the rabbets before separating the long and short parts - a larger piece to work with

    • @quillwoodworks
      @quillwoodworks  4 місяці тому

      I do this order so I don’t have possible chip out with the unsupported material (the sides of the box before the rabbet) when I go to the shooting board. I appreciate the comments and you watching!

    What is the table saw blade that you use in the making of the box

    • @quillwoodworks
      @quillwoodworks  5 місяців тому

      Hey Keith. I use a Woodworker 2 blade for most things and a Freud rip blade for cuts where I need a flat bottom.

    Blowed away by you gee'tar talents, but bothered immensely by the loose lid. I don't need a 'pick' box as I'm a finger style player of doubtful ability, but will brass hinge pin the lid so it stays with the box. They will make great jewelry gift boxes.
    Thanks for the instructive vid.

    Very impressive box! Thanks for the great video. PS why isn't your beautiful walnut lid attached to the box somehow? It's great that the lid stays vertical when you lift it open, but you might be a tad sad if the lid falls off one day and it would be a shame to damage it.

    • @quillwoodworks
      @quillwoodworks  8 місяців тому

      Thanks for the nice words. It’s a trade-off for the simplicity of the design and I also like that the user can hold the lid in their hand and, hopefully, admire this little slab of figured walnut up close. Thanks again for watching!

    • @quillwoodworks

      I have two. My main shooting board is from Lee Valley (got it used at a great price and it replaced a hand built one) and the one in this video, to shoot miters, was built by myself.
