I'm new to woodworking, and this is the kind of content I need to see. Not that flashy junk, just a man and his tools making something awesome with a humble heart.
The last shot and fade out with you playing guitar and the "never had one lesson" got me. I clicked subscribe right away. Love this type of content and excellent work.
Cutest ending to a video I’ve seen in a while. I did the same with piano but had many lessons, 50 years ago. Lol. I love the two contrasting woods and really love the two contrasting finishes. That walnut looked like a stone tile almost. I just took up whittling in my older age which was probably not the brightest idea for a lady with arthritis, but I’m finding my hands are hurting less and less. I take that as a win. Also, made each of my family a small little catch all bowl for Christmas. 14 of those strengthened my hands well. I must say they turned out well and I hope they will remember where they got them one day. Thank you for the knowledge passed along. Merry Christmas. ✌🏻🤍🤞🏽
You have a little over a dozen videos and you are already one of my favorite youtube channels. Your sarcasm and sense of humor is spot on. Talented as well. Don't stop what you're doing! Beautiful little box and I have never thought about using my spacer blocks at the table saw like you'd have and also that is a great little trick to keep the cover up!! Outstanding as always!
We have several small boxes I made in our living room. When items such as these are made out of beautiful wood, they invite being picked up and held. Great job. Thanks.
This came up on my recommended and I can’t be more glad. That notch for the flip back is such a good idea. Hoping you have many more videos and tips to come!👍🏼
Just made this. Took about an hour and a half start to finish (not including finishing). I didnt do the dados for the dividers thought so rhat saved time. Great tip with the hingless lid. Really like this box.
Lovely little box and good tips at the end. I agree, making small things is tough and requires more attention to detail, speaking of which. I like that lid stand back detail, I'll file that away in the noggin for future use!
Thanks for the kind words, Keaton! Hopefully you’re better than me. I file away tips in my head for later, then forget about them until it’s too late. 😁
Great video and I love the Guild! I have a few myself, my pride and joy is my D55. She was one of the last real Guilds to come of of New Hartford, CT. The box turned out beautifully, I wish I could make something that good! I'm still just barely building shelves . . .
I would love to see this box created with only hand tools. It is the perfect size for what I want, for the wood I have laying around. But, I only used hand tools. My shooting board is my prize possesion.
I love my shooting boards too! I do have a hand tools only video on my channel but it’s not a box. If you’re a hand tools guy though you may enjoy it. Thanks for watching.
Beautiful box. Can you explain the dados for the dividers a little more. I’m having trouble picturing/understanding why the back has through dados but the front requires stop dados.
Thanks for watching. The rabbet at the rear of the box sits lower than the rabbet in the front of the box. This is to facilitate the tilt-back lid. If I made the dados in the front through dados then there would be a notch left because the divider isn’t wide enough to fill the dado in the front. In the back of the box the divider is flush with the rear rabbet. I hope that makes sense!
Thanks for watching, Dan. With the width of the piece, I may sometimes cut that first. But with the rabbets…I prefer to do them later when they’re not so long because I find it easier to get even pressure as I pass it over the blade or bit resulting in a slightly more accurate depth. Hope my explanation makes sense and thanks again!
Thanks for tuning in, Jason. My favorite part about shooting boards is that they take away that frustration from when you try to take just a hair off at the table saw…then you totally overshoot it!
This was the first video of yours to come up in my feed and I'm really glad I watched it and am now subscribed. I also enjoy building small boxes for all the reasons you gave but didn't know the rabbet trick to create a lid stand. Super cool! Thanks for showing us this neat little build. Good stuff!
Thanks. I've watched a lot of videos on making small pick boxes, I then picked yours to watch and if I had to pick which box I like the best I would probably pick your pick box as the best before I pick any of the rest.

@@quillwoodworks I do appreciate you responding to my question. What a good idea you have. It takes your work to another level and it is so simple' I will use it in my next box. I have a shop with a full complement of tools and I am in my eighties. I thought I had seen just about everything concerning wood working but your design is a first. Thanks pal!
Would be great to see this being build without a table saw and a router table, instead using a plunge saw and a router or only with hand tools. Many people do not have the space for such a well equipped workshop.
I appreciate your comments Sebastian. I recently made a video (it was right after this video) using just hand tools on my channel. Hopefully you find it interesting. Thanks again for the feedback.
Along with wood working I play guitar too. I really like that sunburst guitar. Had a roommate in the Marines in 1979 who had one just like it that I really admired. Great video! Love the notch in the back. Although I admit, I find some 'humor' in the beginner tag..."here, just use your edge plane, your shooting board, router table" etc. hehe. Teasing aside, you have a great instructional voice - keep at it!
Great video, thanks! I hadn't seen a thin rip jig like that before, looks very handy. I cringed a bit every time you reached past the spinning table saw blade to grab a tiny offcut right behind it. Obviously everyone makes their own safety trafeoffs in their own shop, but viewers should know that that's generally considered dangerous.
Nice project…one question: how does the lid keep from falling off, if you turn it upside down, for example? Otherwise, I like the notch at the back of the lid to keep it propped open! Nice touch. Thanks!
Thanks for your video, loved it, I am trying to be an inspired woodworker, starting late in life, and really loved your workshop and tools. Guessing you have had your tools for a long time, your vice I really loved did you make fit yourself and your edge planner too, is that an old one ? Good luck with the guitar lessons, I play but never enough. Thanks Paul
Hi Paul. I’ve collected the tools over the past 15 years, many before we had kids and disposable income was more of a thing! The vise is from BenchCrafted and the edge plane is from Lie-Nielsen and it’s based on an old Stanley design. Best of luck with the dive into woodworking!
Much appreciated, Vernon! That table saw was a game-changer for me. And that Ridgid sander is one of the best values in woodworking. I use it all the time.

That is from Lie Nielsen. Sometimes I feel like it was a slightly silly, extravagant purchase but I do enjoy using it every chance I get. Thanks for watching!
I do this order so I don’t have possible chip out with the unsupported material (the sides of the box before the rabbet) when I go to the shooting board. I appreciate the comments and you watching!

Please do not mimic the move of reaching your left hand over an engaged table saw blade. Other than that, great video.
With so many impressive woodworking tools, amazing how dust free your shop is. Impressive.

Awesome work. The best looking pick box ever.
Great to hear, Kosh. Thanks!
Great video and I loved the excellent guitarmanship at the end.
Decades of practice!

Great tip with the hingless lid. Really like this box.
The box also scales up in size nicely. I have another one that’s about 9x5x3 and it looks quite nice. Thanks for tuning in.
@quillwoodworks That might make a nice tea box with some basswood dividers.

I’m so glad you you’re enjoying the videos. I appreciate the kind words and good luck as you get started!
I love the end😂❤
Thanks and I appreciate you watching!
The sound of that lid when you open is so lovely
Such elegant simplicity, that lid with no hinges! But is there any decent way to do that without a router table?
I would use all hand tools which ,of course, would add quite a bit of time to the project but could be a fun challenge.
I recently picked guitar back up after going years without playing. I hope to shake off the rust as quickly as you have! Nice box too 😉
Awesome box. I love it, and it is hard to believe your guitar talent is natural!
I must've missed it or not understood something, was the lid fastened?
Thanks a lot for sharing your project .
Nice little project packed with great tips. I hope you find making these videos as enjoyable as I do consuming them. I think I'll watch it again. 👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you, Bill!
Beautiful stuff. Do you have plans for your shooting board?
I don’t, sorry. I believe I made it from an article in Fine Woodworking.
Great video and wonderful shop. What method do you use to sharpen your chisels and planes?
Hey Matt. For most items, I use a honing guide at 30 degrees and use Shapton water stones. I go up to 8000 grit. Thanks for tuning in!

Thanks Jim. It’s just an inexpensive Freud blade from Home Depot. It doesn’t get used that much so after several years it’s still very sharp.

Thanks for watching, Dan. With the width of the piece, I may sometimes cut that first. A well done video! I would like to know about how you made the swivel lid? I can't seem to get it in this video. Mostly measurements.
Hi. The notch is only about a 1/4” long and about 3/16” deep in addition to the rabbet that runs around the perimeter of the inside. Hope that helps.
@@quillwoodworks Don't you have a pin for the lid to turn on?
No, Matt. It just rests in the notch when tilted back.
