Retired mechanical contractor for 31 years learning woodworking @ 77 for retirement and mental health. Your work is so impressive. Thank you for sharing this build and I'll subscribe just to see what I have no idea how to do but learn a little along the way.
You give me inspiration @maxhurst8904, I've just turned 71 and I too am a recovering mechanicl engineer. MY dad was an amazing wood worker, me...if I looked at a piece of wook, it would warp! I've always wanted to learn woodworking, it's great to know I can still take it up when I finally retire.
I watch Rob Cosman regularly, he is brilliant. However, your demo of this box build spoke volumes with out any words. It really worked for me. I am a visual learner. Thanks.
Beautiful! You totally surprised me with some of the things you did - cutting the box into two for example. With my zilch knowledge of woodworking I get surprised by a lot of techniques! The finished box is absolutely wonderful - great piston drop. Thank you for a fascinating video.
Some of the hand held planers you used I've never seen before. And that hinge. Pretty awesome. This has to be some of the best craftsmanship I've ever seen. The music was nice too.
No more words... Just emotions... Oh and I coincidentally just saw the ENCURTIS video on the 3-parts mix yesterday! Thank you for this video and the beautiful box!
An excellent example of someone with skill and patience producing a precision piece. After more than 45 years of woodworking, I would be happy to call this piece my own. The design is excellent. It looks very elegant on the outside with the wrap around grain. I’m always worried about the strength of the mitre joins and would normally fit keys into the corners - but that ruin the design; so, I think I would play safe (Mr. Over-engineer) and fit keys on the inside so that they don’t show on the outside. I truly hope the piston fit insert stays that way. I made one and, with seasonal changes, it became a tray that wouldn’t come out! I tend to line my jewellery boxes with a suede or pigskin after a professional jeweller told me that high carat gold items could get scratched after time in contact with the timber. How much of an issue? No idea but I line my boxes. My only advice is: keep up the high quality work and high quality videos. PS. I’m not fond of the music but, on my device, there is this thing called volume control. I find it works.
All around beautiful job. Pretty much flawless as far as I can see. I’ve made a few box,s but have never seen the hinge design you used, very unique. Super little jewelry box you can be proud of. Thanx
I like using interesting grain patterns like that and wrapping them around corners. Also, that moment when you know you didn't glue it shut is always a relief. I use one solid rod all the way through my hinges after shipping one to Australia from the States and they blew the pins out of the hinge segments. Great build and I like the tray also.
I enjoy watching you use "real" hand tools, mixed with modern equiwork. Would love to see some glass panels in the top (working on a watch box myself). Inspiring woirk.
@@GM_DesignNice how easy it is to make, without complex measuring or set-ups. As long as you have the centering drill bit in the right size. Incra makes a wooden hinge kit, but it relies on the Incra precision fence to dial in the clearance and the stops. I suppose you could make a jig instead, for the same router bits.
If you had inlaid a thin piece of darker wood, like ebony , in the lid --above the finger dent, the contrast would make the dent almost disappear! - Over all, a very impressive project. Well Done!
Only thing I can see as a possible issue is the mitered glue up corners may not hold up with edge grain glue. Splines are what I like. Makes me feel better anyway. Great job. Arborist Blair Glenn (Also a UA-cam channel on trees)
thanks glad you liked it 😀 I’ve never had any issues but splines are a good option and can add a nice decorative edge. I like the idea of using brass splines which I’ll probably try at some point 👍
Thank you for sharing your journey with us. The music, the craftsmanship, the tools was quite impressive and with that said I decided to subscribe to your channel and journey ❤❤
Very nice work! Its 'edgey' and it fits wondertully. Like the hinge! But one little remark: the 'bevel' for a finger to open the lid you sanded smooth. Would have liked that to be edgey too, just to have a consistent look. But nevertheless: great job!
Absolutely amazing craftsmanship. I loved the wooden dowels with wire for the hinge. Very nice. I was wondering if ya thought adding felt at the bottom of the inserts would take away from the beautiful wood grain.
thanks so pleased you enjoyed it, I did think about adding felt or maybe leather to the bottom of the box & tray but did want to keep the walnut showing on this one. 😀
Looks great. Nice to see a young man developing serious skills. Now figure out how to make the grain on the hinge exactly match the grain on the box 😁 No, I haven't got a clue!
Excellent professional work of Art. I would have used shellac and later Bee wax. For inside and outside. What about an old fashioned Key for that valuable Box?
Nice work, and a lovely box. Just one tiny nitpick, aesthetically speaking. I liked the idea of a finger notch instead of a knob. But the rest of the box is all flat planes and relatively crisp corners.... In contrast, the notch looked a little 'soft' by the time you sanded it. Had it been me I'd have made it a little deeper, being careful not to let the rasp rock, and made sure to leave the edges of the notch defined.

The finger dent felt like an afterthought in an otherwise well thought through project. Perhaps drilling half a hole in the same place would have worked better with the otherwise quite sharp design rather than the soft little indent?
Gorgeous. Two things... does the lemon curd (beeswax stuff) also smell of lemons? And also...the music sounds like a cross between Gary Moore and Peter Green and I loved it. Subscribed for quality woodworking with no faff and decent music! Good luck with your channel.
Nice job but I have to query the piston fit. I live in the tropics (Cairns, Australia) and when I make a sliding lid box I have to leave a few millimeters of clearance in the slots. If I make the lid a tight fit in dry weather then when the rains come the wood will swell and the lid will not even fit into the box. Have you experienced this problem with your trays ?
thanks, glad you liked it 😀 We don’t have the same humidity changes here as you do but I will be keeping an eye on it if/when we do get slightly more humid weather
If you had cut the boards with a narrow handsaw instead of the table saw the grain would have been even less interrupted. Or you could have cut it with a router and a V-grove bit.
Love the piston fit tray. What are your thoughts about expansion and contraction of wood. Will it bind? I wanted my next project to have a tray and I was worried that during the year it'd not be able to open. Love the box. New Subscriber!!
thanks really pleased you liked it 😀. I’m going to keep an eye on the tray to see if it does bind up over time, hopefully as it’ll only be small amount of movement, if any, there’ll be no issues but its definitely something to consider when making one. 👍
Nice work. What type of white pencil is that you marked with. I would like to change from a pencil but fabric markers and white are pencils are hit or miss when it comes to writing on the wood. Thanks
Box looks great. Did the grain wrap all the way around or just on 3 sides? Love the Cosman hinge. Also like the music. Reminds me of another channel I like name Tokoly Woodwork. Plays similar music 👍
That is a beautiful box! That piston fit box is really cool but I wonder how it’ll hold up to seasonal change? Keep it for yourself and examine every so often to see how holds up. Have you thought about narrating your videos? I’m still working out my style myself. Sad people watch and the only thing they say is something nothing to do with your work.
Thanks, yes I’ll be keeping an eye on it to see if there are any issues down the line. I have tried narrating a few times but I was never happy with it so always removed it. It’s definitely something I’d like to do, once I can get to the point where I’m happy with the end result 👍

thanks 😀
Really interesting hinge. Beautiful piece all the way around.
Just beautiful and as a furniture maker thanks for new ideas the finishers were beautiful.
Thank you so much! 😀

Excellent craftsmanship. It was a good choice to use the relief in place of hardware.
Thank you very much! 😀
Maybe a mango knob as well with a mango tray. Still beautiful though.
That would be cool! 👍
Love it. The hinge is the best part
thanks, glad you liked it 😀

absolutely beautiful and roy Williams what a great day in the shop

Wow, thank you! 😀
And they are decorative.

I enjoyed the background music almost as much as the build.
thanks 😀

Gary first time here. This is outstanding work of the highest level. The end result is absolutely unstated elegance. Excellent.
thank you very much, I’m pleased you enjoyed it 😀
Probably the best box I've seen, the detail is unreal. Not convinced with that thumb slot however. Well done, Stewart, south west Australia.
