    It can't be a fake Rolex because it doesn't say "Rolex" anywhere on it. Obviously.
    It may be an homage, but it's not a fake.

    • @ImDembe
      @ImDembe 6 років тому +4

      Not a homage either, homage is tossed around everywhere so it's a copy, same design without the logo, copy is the exact same design and with the logo.
      I have nothing against Steinheart because it's affordable compared to a Sub. Love the Ocean 500 models.

    Steinheart make glorious watches to the point that even if I could afford a Rolex I would still have the Steinheart. Snobs and the wealthy are blinded by names and stature.

    You've made a couple of really good points in your video, one of which I have not heard described anywhere else in the way you put it. That was the "opportunity cost" of buying a Rolex Submariner. Yes, I can put together the funds to spend 6-9k on a used or new Rolex, but I can also think of many better uses for that money. What else could I do with that cash?
    That was part of my thought process when I ordered my 42mm Steinhart Ocean One Ceramic almost two years ago. I was also not sure if this style of watch was something I would really like and wear daily. So for less than the price of a routine service on a Rolex, I was able to test the idea. As it turns out, I really like the watch, and its performance has been stellar. But I find myself eyeballing a Pepsi bezel GMT more and more for something different. At $550 from Steinhart, finding out if I really like that type of watch will be pretty painless. Not so with Rolex.
    My final thought is this. The other day, I was sitting with a client negotiating a training and consulting contract when he inquired if I was wearing a Rolex and asked to see my watch. I told him it was not a Rolex, but rather a Steinhart I had ordered from Germany. He liked it very much and said, "Well at least I know you are not jacking up my rates to buy expensive jewelry." Then he signed my contract. Priceless.

      I was trying to drive this point -test ride a Rolex with a cheaper alternative. Thank you for putting it simply! Glad you signed the deal!

      But that is not the point he made - being able to afford a $9,000 watch or not is a different matter. He talks about one model the $400 Steinhart being a blatant rip off of another model costing $9,000 That comment defies logic and any semblance of common sense or intelligence.
      There is no intellectual property rights on the general watch design or shape if you like.
      The Steinhart is it's own model produced for $ 400.00 and a darn good watch at that, it's not a Rolex "Homage" as Rolex has no legal rights to those designs, even someone with an IQ below 50 would have to understand that.
      Rolex themselves copied their oyster design from MIDO.
      Rolex produces watches at the top end of the pricing structure, why compare a $9000 watch to a $ 400 watch, what moron would put videos on UA-cam and tell us all that he found the $9000 watch to be a little bit better than the $400 model, I wonder why that is????

    I wanted a watch to use and feel safer for vacations but I just couldn't warm up to my steinhart so I replaced it with an Orient blue ray ll and switched the bracelet with a strapcode super oyster ll and that hit the sweet spot for me, all in for under well under 300

    I've got the 42mm Ocean One Black Ceramic and I love it! (7.5" wrist) I've had it almost a year now. I own a few other watches. I don't have the money for a Rolex or even a Tutor. And even if I did, I'm not sure if I'd spend that much on a watch. I did have my Steinhart serviced after about six months. The winding wasn't smooth any longer and I could feel friction when winding it. They are an amazing company with fabulous customer service! They told me to send it back (their dime) and said it would take about 5 weeks. I had it back in 3! I believe the Ocean One is an homage to the Rolex Submariner. However many would argue that the Rolex Sub was a homage to a Fifty Fathoms that started the look. I think Replicas are wrong, but like you said, the homage is a style. And it's legal for them to do this. Kudos to Rolex for outstanding design. I don't think they're loosing money over Steinhart and others because most folks with homage watches probably can't afford a Rolex.

    Before you regulate it, try keeping it crown up in the box overnight. They say ETAs go slower in the crown up position, due to a different friction-total in the movement in that position. After 5 -10 years the watch may begin to move slower as the condition of the applied lubricant changes over time, so if you regulate it to slow it down now you may have to regulate it in a few years to speed it up, or have new lubricant applied.

    Hey Serge just wanted to say i enjoyed your video and i have the exact same watch now for over 3 yrs and its been a great watch and a great investment for the money as well as getting "double takes" and compliments on the timepiece every now and then.before i made my purchase i had spent many weeks compairing the swiss movement and grade of steel as well as reviews and quality of the watch in whole and the ocean 1 is as good a build quality as a rolex in my educated opinion and couldnt really justify parting with $11,000.00+ just for a brand name... unless i had a lambo in my driveway lol.👍

    Hi Serge, just a thought re your watch gaining 15 sec per day. Is it fully wound? If the mainspring is not fully wound and not transferring maximum energy to the balance wheel, the latter won’t rotate to it’s maximum and therefore will run fast. Try winding the watch close to your ear until you hear a clicking sound which indicates the mainspring is fully wound. When I first had my watch it too was running fast and once fully wound, slowed down considerably. As I said, just a thought........

    • @simplyserge5000
      @simplyserge5000  6 років тому

      John Taylor another great tip. I’ll keep trying this. It’s still running 15secnds fast per day. I was going to send it out for regulation but I’ll give this another go. I appreciate your advise very much, especially around the holiday season. Cheers

    Staying in a realistic price bracket, my money goes to a Seiko that looks like a Seiko (an SKX, a Monster or the more subtle Samurai), not a Steinhart that looks like a Rolex. Owning a Rolex does not make you life any better. If you can afford it and enjoy it, good for you. If you would rather spend $8 k on upgrading your kitchen or buying your kid his or her first car, and wear a Seiko SKX007, you will enjoy it just as much.

    • @pauljohnson3686

      hervé Chretien Seiko do more than there fair share of submariner looking models and yes the skx is a great watch...... I have the skx and the steinhart.... The steinhart feels much more premium and has a superior movement in terms of quality

    • @em-4297
      @em-4297 6 років тому +1

      +Paul johnson Steinhart never feels premium because it is a "wannabe" of something else. Seiko SKX movement is not inferior to Steinhart's movement. It is simpler (ex. no hacking) because it wants to be extra reliable and fail proof for the people whose lives depends on it when underwater. It meets all the ISO requirements for a dive watch and hence serves its purpose. A "wannabe" can never beat a "be yourself". That is true for "wannabe"s produced by Seiko too !

    I got started in this watch hobby with the Sub homages in 2011 then I got into more and more expensive watches. Finally ended up with 3 Rolexes in 2016. Actually had a Datejust too for 1 month so 4 Rolexes. I have sold them all and yeah there are other things in life like investing in shorting bitcoins when the inevitable crash happens :-) Or Real estate rental properties. I bought the Steinhart Ocean green 39 and a OVM 39 last week. Also bought Seiko SBDC053. Tudor BB 36 replaced my Explorer I. Overall got over $12k in cash leftover after selling my Rolexes and buying a bunch of cheaper watches (most expensive Tudor BB 36 was $2,300CAD used).
    Anyway I like watches and like to collect them. Tried other hobbies but keep coming back to this one. Tried going down to 2-3 watches but it keeps getting back up to 8-12. Getting all the Rolexes I want would be over $100k. I'd rather have some Seikos and Steinharts and invest in things that produce positive cash flow

    Thank you for your videos. I have heard just excellent things about Steinhart. there's also another scenario where Steinharts are well appreciated, in diminishing returns. A person might buy one or two subs but what about a third or a fourth of a different color? It might be wiser to buy a green Steinhart if a person already has a black Submariner.

    The Steinhart is getting more and more known, you really get best bang per buck, the quality is good, the Elabore 2824-2 runs like a charm, what more can you ask for? True some hate it, BUT...even Rolex owners have one down the line, and the real watch lovers dont hate, they live by the words: Wear what YOU love, all thats matters. Im a big Steinhart fan, member of all the different groups on facebook, its a large, loving community, you never hear any one speak bad about other brands or watch lovers, that sets the bar for me. Since becoming a Steinhart owner, i got friends from around the world, i would never have dreamed of. The gem in my collection of the brand, is a Ocean red vintage red mk1, i cherish this beauty. Advantage of being a Steinhart owner: You get quality, the owner of the brand, Gunter, often swings by and say "hello", in the different groups and comment on our pics. the groups for Steinhart is huge on Facebook, and great place to be..so...GO FOR IT. Merry Xmas

    Hommage is perfectly fine. There is nothing wrong if you want a certain design that is available for a lot less money. The only time you should buy a rolex is when the cost doesn’t hurt you. If you have to save up for a long time, if spending 8-20k really hurts your budget i dont consider it wise to buy. Youd be super careful with it and not wear it as it’s supposed to be worn. I could by a Rolex for example but i got a wife and soon kids and with being a middle class man id just feel egoistic and stupid if i buy a rolex now. Maybe in the future who knows. Until then im happy my seiko and steinhart. Even got a quartz jacques lemans which was a present and i wear it proudly.

    Had a few Rolex/tudor watches and recently got a OVM red. Rolex is definitely for branding and value retention and possibly some growth with the sports model but it cannot be compare with the potential of stocks/property. For Steinhart OVM red, the quality is great for the price and its comparable to some semi luxury brands such as Tag, Tissot etc. Don't really felt ripped off by Rolex as the timepiece as it can be easily liquidated in secondary market especially for sought-after sport models. To me it just whether are you willing to spend the kind of money for a watch.

    Steinhart have heard their customers, launch the 39mm size is a huge deal, the ETA 2893-2, is almost more accurate that some of omega´s and tudor´s, so come on what is the big deal with ´´Homage´´ you´ve got a Swiss made, ceramic bezel, automatic beautifull watch for less than $600, you never go wrong, period. I just got the GMT 39 mm pepsi, and it´s arrived today :)

    How ya doing, I don’t think you can call our Steinharts a fake Rolex as long as the face says Steinhart on it , even the crown has Steinharts mark on it , I think they’re very upfront about it being an homage even mentioning what Rolex they’re paying homage to . So I guess the demagnetizer didn’t have any effect on the accuracy?

      Thanks for the feedback I’m loving the watch. The demagnetizing didn’t work. Likely it just came out of factory 15 seconds ahead which is still an acceptable range. I’m looking to regulate it but I don’t want to ship it out or pay $125 like I’ve been quoted in Toronto. How much would you pay?

      Simply Serge When my Steinhart was running about 20 seconds fast I took it to a new watchmaker that just opened up a shop close to where I live he said possibly it’s magnetized and he would demagnetize (no charge) it and check it on his time-graph ( I forget what the thing is called) and if it was still running fast he would regulate it , and I think he said that would cost $75. Would you like his info?

    12k for a Rolex Sub is way way over what they really well for. The regular ceramic with date retails for 8K. If you are looking for a white gold Sub you'll pay 12K. But a regular steel sub is between 7 and 8K. Just trying to help. And by the way I own a Steinhart 39MM Ocean One. I also have a Submariner 14060M and a Explorer 2 16570. There's nothing wrong with owning a Steinhart. I wear my 39MM Ocean One then on other days I'll wear my Submariner 14060M or my Explorer. I realize you are really new to collecting. I truly think that the Steinhart is a excellent entry level actual Swiss made watch. Good luck. Also don't worry about what others think of your wearing a Steinhart. It's your money and your wrist. It looks good because it looks like a Sub. Too close to the Sub to pay a respectful hommage IMHO. Why not wear a Steinhart that does not look like a Sub? Plenty of brands that make an effort not to look like a Sub. Why chose a model that clearly plagiarises an icon?

      Yes, only time I take it off is to sleep. I wear it swimming, running, cycling, even fixing things around the house and moving heavy furniture. I consider it a durable sports watch that also looks great at the office. Cheers

      My personal opinion but most guys don’t need a 42 unless they are big boned and over 6 feet. 39mm is classic and handsome. All depends on how tall and wide you are I’d say. Either way you can’t go wrong with the steinhart, cheers

      its not very legible because its grey but I like it this way because it gives the watch a more stealthy look. I have a few videos of the watch to give you a better idea so yes im happy with the bezel, its solid and looks sharp.

    I have just ordered my second Steinhart (an Ocean One Classic GMT ceramic) because I have been so satisfied with the quality of my first one (an Ocean 39 green bezel ceramic). They are both homage watches, with subtle difference from the Rolex counterparts, but handsome, serviceable, accurate, and durable. What more, exactly do you need from a watch? Bragging rights as to how much it cost seems pretty silly if you don't have thousands of dollars to spend on a luxury item, especially if it means making sacrifices in other areas of your life.

    I have a family with two small children...
    I can still afford to buy 3 or 4 quality Swiss timepieces from steinhart...
    And still feed my children...
    how much would it cost a person to buy 3 or 4 rolex watches ?!?
    I can let my son play with the watch now without fear, and I can give him the same "classic design" "Swiss" watch when he turns 18...

    The only reason people buy Steinhart is because it looks like a Rolex. I am not against either brand but I personally don't see a reason to buy either. If you are willing to buy a new Rolex, to me, you better not have a family, you better own your home and car with a heavy portfolio. Anything less and your priorities are not square. In the Steinhart range there are plenty of other choices that don't come with the "look at me" then "oh, its not a rolex" stigma. But I do enjoy the discussion.

      In my experience not too many people (strangers) audibly comment to me about my watch either. But one thing is for certain, just like with clothing, if you are wearing a nice (not douchy) watch people in the world treat you better. Its weird.

    If you compare a Steinhart Ocean One to a Rolex Sub at a glance they seem similar but side to side they ars very very different. Homage? Eeeeeeh... Maybe. But a homage is not a copy. It's a nod or borrowing of a certain design. Not a copy. Steinharts are good pieces and use high end ETA. Steinhart also "homages" designs from others where the originals either don't do anymore or want obscene costs.. A great example is the Steinhart Apollo to the Panerai. You can own a Steinhart Ocean One and a Rolex Sub , put them in the same box and be comfortable with it.

    Personally, I have had Submariners, but never liked them because of poor timekeeping and extraordinary expense of ownership and service. But I love the iconic style. Solution... my Phoibos 300m quartz diver. Better looking, better size, better accuracy, better fit, superb lume, cost $119 on Amazon. By the way, history shows that a Rolex is a good investment, especially the popular styles like Subs. Wish I'd bought them up back when they were $2K, I'd have a fortune in mint vintage Rolex watches now. Thanks.

    i have a rolex sub no date and a steinhart ocean one and a bunch of other watches. for me its not a big deal that the steinhart is a homage . i think you can take benefit of both of the watch qualitys. for example, i use the steinhart for daily wear what includes motorcycle riding and the rolex for more safe situations. after a year of daily use of the ocean one there are some scratches and dinges i don,t want on my sub.

      Once I saw a big sticker pasted on a dirty, mud splashed Land Rover which read "people who drive spotless 4WDs, don't really need them". You shouldn't have paid 8000 dollars for a Submariner, if it is not worn in "unsafe" situations. A sports watch with no scratches is a shame on its wearer ! ( Sorry no offense please).

      42mm is good for some people. I am a big guy (6'4", 320lbs, 8.25" wrist). I was torn between the 42mm and the 44mm. The straight lugs have made me lean towards 42mm. Now I have to decide between the OVM and the OVR.

    • @jimmunsw
      @jimmunsw 6 років тому

      JungleEddie :- sorry but what is OVM and OVR pls? I m new to these words ;) Btw size 42mm is definitely better bcos d SS black submariner is so universally iconic that if u wear a bigger diameter size, it looks BOLDER n cooler for sure, though originally Rolex hv made smaller Submariner of >40mm dia. Hv u also heard or browse thru Swiss made Ultimate Imitation Rolex Submariner @ US$900 +/- ? Its top copy almost d entire watch in good quality watch material except if u take apart the movement u can see its a Swiss Eta or inhouse modified Swiss engine! Without taking out d movement its exactly same as a real Rolex in feel n weight! I m telling u this bcos once ppl started playing with China watches, they go higher n higher, this type is below d real Rolex n top of all imitation Rolexes! There r rich ppl will buy this type to go day to day wear to work, gym work out, bang here n there rough use, go make some scratches on this watch, while keeping d real Rolex locked in his home safe! Yes, thats why top imitation watches sold by the near ten of thousand pieces, just bcos d real Submariner got no stock n cost over 10 times d price! Enjoy yo all ya, merry Xmas n HN year too.... ;)

    • @JungleEddie

      OVM is Ocean Vintage Military and OVR is Ocean one Vintage Red.

    • @jimmunsw
      @jimmunsw 6 років тому

      JungleEddie :- oh i saw it now, u hv to becareful bcos Ovm is classic with YELLOW patina dot markers n hands lumes, NOT yellowish beige of original vintage watches! It may look funny in color when it comes landed in yr wrist! Ovr is okay if u like red, some fancy their favourite color, its personal. But imho Ovm looks better classic, but i only like it if its yellowish beige not plain yellow that looks air brushed rather than aging color....its a tough call for u, give yrself more time to decide, dont rush n regret later - u know what i mean, happens to me too ;)

But I would never recommend to anyone on a budget to splash out on a submariner unless brand recognition and history are very important to you . Both are very good sports watches in their own right .There is a lot of pretentious bullshit talked in the watch world .you have chosen well and your priorities are spot on. You will get many years great service from your steinhart.Enjoy !

  • @Shadowwalker1717

    Is it a Sin, that in my Opinion the Steinhart looks better then the real Rolex ? It's like Fallout 3 or Kerbal Space Program, the vanilla Version is a good base but not good enough so it needs mods to be nice. Steinhart 300m and 316L Steel that is harder and more scratch resistent than 905L Steel. The Movement, extreme good and like precise than the real one and not so expensive, so if something happens no problem. Or the size of the case. Not 40 like a womens watch or a dress watch, it's 42 absolute normal. And the Ocean One Vintage Red, is a hommage of the Rolex 1665, my god something like this don't exist anymore in the Rolex collection and again they doing things with it, that I miss on the original. All the quality for a unbeaten price. What a Dream.
    Or look at the GMT, it has 300m too, Steinhart understand that something that look like a Diver should be one. Rolex only 100m and wanna be Flieger Watch. And the Bezel, working like a Diver one but it's matter because you can use it easily as a GMT Bezel. I know they did it to save material costs but it works fine.
