I bought this back in April and I think it is a great value homage watch. The case fits fine and I like the drilled lugs. To be honest lack of anti reflection coating have never been an issue for me, not in any watch. I would have liked maybe a little less taper on the bracelet and smaller "adventure" printing. I was a bit worried about the shiny Steinhart logo but it turns out I really like it. Overall I think the design looks good. I will probably never buy an original Explorer but if I'm going for an homage I want it to be of respectable quality and good value. This is the first Explorer homage watch that really made me want it. I think Steinhart offers well made watches with great value for money.

I bought the Adventure shortly after it was published, as a reward, so to speak, after submitting my bachelor thesis. I love this Steinhart watch, the Explorer style is exactly what I've been craving for a long time. It gives me an awesome feeling, the movement runs just perfect and I am really looking forward to embrace it's strap variability!
Almost exactly 10 years ago I got my first real automatic watch for my 16th birthday, it was the Steinhart Ocean One Red, which I've been wearing ever since (with a few Seikos in between) - also an incredibly cool watch!

I own a 214270 and this is a decent copy version. I really like the caseback but as you said, there's many subtle things that compound to make this an "Explorer at home".
Steinhart offers amazing value for money, but my problem is I no longer can wear a watch that is trying to be something it's not. For a little more than 490 Euro, I'd be looking for a nice field watch with actual originality.

Awesome review as always Jody! A really nice Explorer style watch from Steinhart. That Sellita Elabore grade movement is a great engine given the relatively modest price. I paid more than double that for the entry level SW200 in my Oris ProPilot for instance.
The 39mm Explorer is my dream watch and I had it in the back of my mind that I’d try and somehow get one closer to the time to mark my 40th birthday in a few years but now the 39mm has been discontinued that ship has sailed 😔 Not that I could really afford (or rather, justify) spending that kind of money on a single watch and never mind the fact that Rolex would be unlikely to ever sell the likes of me a stainless steel sports model 😂
This Ocean 39 Adventure reminds me a bit of a Tisell Explorer homage I have. It is such a nice watch and looks slightly closer to its inspiration than the Steinhart but when you look closer there are quite a few differences which start to really stick out. The dial, bracelet and clasp are very close to the real deal but the lugs and case shape are slightly different and those differences got more obvious and noticeable the longer I had the watch which felt a bit “uncanny valley” 😂

I’ve had a borealis adraga with the gilt dial for 2.5 years now, and is one of, if not my favourite watches to wear. The gilt dial and jubilee type bracelet differentiate it well from the original, and gilt is such a great look for this watch. Hi Jody, yeah I know what you mean about the case, it’s definitely a Steinhart thing. I bought one when they first came out and have worn it a fair bit since then also comparing it with my black OP39. You just have to treat the Steinhart as a different animal as far as comfort goes.. it’s not uncomfortable in fact it wears pretty well on my 7.5 inch wrist but it’s never going to have that ergonomic organic feel of the Rollux (I refuse to use the proper name). I bought mine for a daily beater that had some Explorer vibes, had some quality but I could afford to scratch up a little so it works for me. The thing is, I don’t think Steinhart are trying to compete with the Chinese ‘homage’ manufacturers head to head, I think they’re game is to play their own game a little and perhaps they think they are taking the moral high ground on ‘copying’ a bit more. A Steinhart has more cred’ than a San Martin for instance and I think they know that and this is the way they preserve it. Anyway, love your work and really happy to see a review of a watch I own today so thanks.. please keep it going. I guess you’re also looking forward to Obi Wan landing soon.. MTFBWY.

While my comparison has to be based on a vastly smaller number of other watches than Jody's, I will say that the Steinhart case wears noticeably different. It's nothing I'd call annoying or uncomfortable, but when you wear even the 39 O1s for a few days and then put on something more contoured, you notice that the Steinhart case calls for a lot more attention on your wrist. For example: Even my CW C63 in 39mm and on its steel bracelet (which *looks* a lot larger on wrist than a Steinhart 39 diver) feels almost like I'm wearing a regular Swatch in direct comparison. What really astounded me was when I put on a buddy's 1990s Submariner which felt like it was made of paper in direct comparison. Sure... that was also down to the much flimsier and lighter bracelet on the Rolex (God, these things were pretty terrible back then), but I would bet it has even more to do with the fact that the Rolex is much more contoured to your wrist than the Steinhart - which more or less just sits on top of it.
And yes: AFAIK all those O1-models use the same basic case with small deviations depending on the model. Some of the more "premium" ones have chamfered lugs for example. But then again: Rolex use the basic Oyster design on a large variety of watches themselves. They aren't shy about the fact and fans of the brand don't seem to mind. I'm guessing the "parts-bin" approach Steinhart use when creating new models is probably one of the reasons why they can manage to offer these things at a relatively low price.

Domed crystal looks nice but while reflections are scaled down they are more difficult to avoid. With a flat crystal reflections are larger but it only requires a small twist to avoid them completely. Therefore I think it had been better if Adventure Classic had a flat crystal, like the original.

Some people get snobby about Steinhart and won't buy them but they are only hurting themselves when the price/quality Steinhart offer is factored in. The Adventure didn't suit me in the end but that is no slight on the quality of the piece and I passed to on to my brother who loves it. The Ocean one I brought to replace it won't leave my collection any time soon.

@@Dan-uo3pv I love my Steinhart. I also have some high end pieces as well. But, it's really amazing that for the $450ish I paid I got such a quality , sturdy , fit and finished watch. One thing that Steinhart does inadvertently, is let you know you are crazy to drop $5-6,000 on another watch that is only incrementally better.

I' ve been owning a Steinhart Ocean 1 Gmt coke for nearly 4 years now and I could not be happier about its perceived quality, looks and accuracy (a steady + 2 sec/day), now this Adventure does not seem to be any different and in a way the fact it has a little too much writing on its dial, the relative chunckiness of both the case and bracelet to me adds to its own personality, on the other hand, the superb lume, the outstanding accuracy provided by the Sellita elabore movement (another plus) makes this a winner in my book, i might pull the trigger on this although right now im in the chase for either a Marathon Gsar medium size or a Rado Captain Cook.

Think the only thing really wrong with the watch is the lack of AR. The fact that the case design is a departure from making the watch a complete “fakey” Is in my opinion a good thing. Maybe Steinhart aren’t using their parts bin, maybe they just adding a touch of Steinhart design language to the watch? Anyway reckon it’s a fantastic alternative to spending stupid money on the original watch that’s probably in reality 50 percent better than the Steinie. Nice review Mr M!

Mine arrived a couple weeks ago, but unfotunately it was D.O.A. Steinhart were very good about returning it for repair at their expense, however, so kudos for their customer support. The dial is an absolutely spot on homage and the movement is great. I'd prefer an Oyster case as well, but I can look past that. What I can't forgive is the clasp, which is arguably the worst one in my collection. And that's counting some cheap Seiko & Casio bands. I almost snap off a finger nail every time I remove the band.
