I have seen this subject beaten to death. I own two original Rolex, two 1960s Daytona, of which one is an original Paul Newman. So, probably a 100kUSD watch in today's market. Yet, I just purchased a Steinhart Ocean Once (and used!) and enjoy it immensely. No reason today to dish out 15k euro at once, when what many like me are seeking is to rotate watches on their wrists going for different looks every few days. Steinhart has 99% of the looks, great quality at un UNBEATABLE price. Rolex found the proper look for a manly watch - took them decades - I don't see the need to re-invent the wheel each and every time and, contrary to what you are saying, Jenni, I DO see value in copying - quality copy - such amazing design. Though I DO own Rolex as pointed above, I would never, ever buy a Submariner for 15k euro today .Thanks for the presentation - it helped me illustrate better my point where the Steinhart kicks ass
I own a Steinhart Ocean One Black Ceramic and an Omega Seamaster and a Rolex GMT Master II I love my Rolex, I like my Omega… I am over the moon with the Steinhart - for the money and the customer service (money is no object to me and my wife) - I will never spend Rolex money and will buy more of these Steinharts, they are superb!
@@martinc.720 thanks man. I’d love to have a Rolex but I honestly don’t think I’ll ever be able to realistically afford one. Maybe some day, but for now the stein hart is an amazing watch.
Jenni, as a metallurgist, I have to correct you here. 904L steel is not more scratch resistant compared to 316L. It has better anti-magnetic and anti-corrosion properties. 316L is actually harder than 904L. 904L steel feels shinier because of the higher amount of chromium compared to 316L but also be aware that 904L contains more nickel. So, if you're allergic to nickel, go with titanium (316L also contains nickel, though lower than 904L).
Hi man, I would like to buy Steinhart but their bracelets seems to be cheap, I mean, it seems to me that their bracelets don’t shine, it’s just an impression? They use a steel that don’t shine? I am talking about Steinhart watches that use an Oyster bracelet. Please look at the Tissot Seastar 2000: his bracelets is amazing!!! Its a jewel!!! You are a metallurgist so maybe you can answer to me, thanks🙏🏻
@@viplivesmatterjust Google them and they have a website and you order….nothing mysterious at all….they make Rolex quality watches….I have an ocean rover 2….way nicer than many watches 5 times the price….
I own a Steinhart Ocean One 42...and after wearing it for four years it's still an incredible watch. Levi Strauss invented blue jeans. Every time we wear blue jeans we are paying homage to Levi Strauss / Levi's. The same applies to watches. No one calls random blue jeans an homage to Levi's.
Levi Strauss & Jacob W Davies DID NOT INVENT BLUE JEANS!.. They Patented the Riveting of them in 1873 Blue Jeans were invented by Black Slaves in South Carolina in the Mid 1700's
A “good” watch is one that brings a smile to its owner’s face. Maybe it’s out of a sense of pride, accomplishment, or simply because he or she likes the watch. An homage, an original, or something in between can generate a smile. At the end of the day, there’s room for all watch collectors. Put another way, “live and let live!” Great video, Jenni and congrats on 50k subs. Well-deserved!
All in favour of homage watches, and would love this Steinhart. In my experience the people that are most vociferously opposed to homages are ones who use their watches as a way of showing off how rich they are and they hate the fact that people can get a v similar look for much less.
I’ve owned Rolex, Patek, AP, as well as Steinhart, Invicta, etc. Financial concerns will always create the demand for homage type watches, and I think their availability is actually a positive for the industry as a whole. Keeping as many people interested and actively participating in buying and enjoying timepieces, regardless of their income, is nothing but positive. Rolex will always be a grail for collectors, and they do not lose sales because of sub-$1000 watches. Love your videos Jenni!! ❤️
@@BuckingHorse-Bull thats what happens for decades of stealing other peoples ideas ROLEX , and not using your own movements but kidding people for almost a century using aegler movements and dennison cases ! , paying people at other watch companies for their new ideas , shame on rolex
Coming from a scientist, we get 20 years to do something with a patent and after that it's not ours anymore! The copy has 'no originality in terms of design' but the submariner was designed in 1953 i.e. anyone who worked on it is long retired and those working at Rolex are simply copying their predecessors work... whilst doing nothing to improve the manufacturing process to reduce the cost.
Why would Rolex wish to allay expenses? Have you ever seen Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Chanel or the likes having promotions or wishes to cut cost so as to make it more affordable? No. Why? Artificial brand prestige. Tbh these Brand all have something in common making smaller and less premium items to target groups of people that wishes to enter luxury market with a “ statement “ piece. It’s actually marketing 101 no “luxury” brand would ever reduce their price ever. During the pandemic in March, Chanel and LV reopened in China after China successfully controlled the pandemic and they thereafter increased the starting price of multiple products. It does not make sense financially, but brand prestige and “luxury” a statement piece are all things that influence people to purchase luxury items even during the pandemic to show they are well off. Humans are way more superficial than you think. So Rolex being a cheap entry watch to the world of luxury the last thing they would wish to do is lower their brand recognition/ prestige. Any non watch people would recognise Rolex as a symbol of success. Not everyone would be able to recognise grand SEIKO which makes fabulous good priced pieces. Why? Rolex brand recognition has been deeply ingrained into everyone for being reliable, no fuss and a status symbol for those who just made it in life. Everyone is willing to pay for the price it’s least of Rolex concern to sell at a lower price. To lower ones price is akin to setting up for customer thinking that promotion would be around the horizon that’s the last thing any brand would wish to do if they wish for brand prestige.
@@othus123 Steinhart's also do quite well in the 2nd hand market. It's all subject to what people want to pay. Who knows in 30 years how the watch market will fair out.

Cool story but it'd 's fake. Fake people wear fake watches. It's obvious you're trying to convey something when you buy Homage or Replica (same thing).
Chris In fairness, you’re literally judging people on material things. It’s a bad move. I’m a student so I can’t afford the “original”. You can say I’m fake if you want, I’m just living a realistic life.
@@1517the_year Only ppl who try hard to 'convey' something think other ppl do the same. It's called projection. You're on point, mate. It's all about the numbers.
@@Chris-es3wf but its not fake - its a real Steinhart. Homages and replicas are not the same thing. The Steinhart is made for people who like the GMT Master II, but will never be able to afford it. But they arent lying about what it is - it says Steinhart right on the dial. Replicas are meant to deceive people as if you own the real thing. A replica would say GMT Master II and Rolex on the dial.
I’ve found that having an homage watch like a Squale or a Steinhart is often the mark if someone who has a passion for watches, appreciates the design, has done their research, but simply can’t afford the high price tag of the big brand names. Great video, thanks for the great content.
@@paulkoller8104 Tell that to Roger Smith - one of the world's best watch makers who wears a Rolex Explorer. But if that's your opinion, I doubt you even know who he is. Go google him and pretend you know what I am talking about in a reply.
My thoughts on homage are along the lines of it being the highest form of appreciation. However unless its a replica it doesn't really impact the bottom-line of the original brand because usually the target demographic is quite different.
Don’t be a brand snob. Not everyone has €15000 to spend on a watch that’s hard to get in the first place. I have a Steinhart Ocean One Red with an ETA movement. It’s a beautiful piece.
I honestly think that homage watches really are a great way for regular, everyday people to wear and have the look of something that is unattainable in reality. Not many people can go spend $10k plus on a Rolex but many can go out and get a homage that still functions beautifully and gives you that expensive, classic look of a GMT MASTER 2, Rolex Sub, or even an Omega Speedmaster. These pieces aren’t fakes they are just the reality pieces for an average Rolex or Omega or any expensive watch lover. These homages expand the watch community to not only those who have an unlimited budget but to those who have a tight one. These people still love a pretty watch and for the price and features of a homage... it just cannot be beat!
Roger Hambleton if I could buy a car that was as fast and handled and braked like a Ferrari but cost €6,400 new instead of €150,000 and was called a Hambleton I’d doubt people would laugh.
@@brucedungan - you've obviously missed the point. It has nothing to do with performance but the unoriginal design. There are plenty of watches for 700 Euro that use ETA movements with fantastic original designs and unique heritage.
I had a Rolex Explorer II in my 20's. I bought it to show I made it. I loved it but it lost its luster for me because nobody else noticed it was a Rolex. Sold it and now have a box full of Squales and Steinharts and couldn't be happier. For me I looking at my wrist and seeing a nice watch does the trick, I don't care about the brand. I also enjoy the money I saved by going the homage route, lets me get more watches.
@Arkadi Danielyan It seems like you disagree with yourself. If he is supposed to buy watches for himself, then why is it stupid that he sold the explorer? And what is wrong with reflecting on his opinions and how they came about?
@Arkadi Danielyan He said he sold it because nobody noticed it was Rolex, and then he reflected on his shift of views to the idea that a watch that makes him happy is more worthwhile than one that attempts to make a statement. His "garbage" watches are a better use of his resources from his perspective because they are pleasing to him.
Agreed. Steinhart's in my opinion are their own watch with Swiss movements - they stand on their own, at a fraction of the cost of a Rolex. As one Rolex owner said "I can at least respect someone who wears a Steinhart. Someone who wears a fake - well that's a shame."
Rolex copied all sorts in the past they had touts in every swiss watch company from the 20s onwards .. The reason they had so many firsts .. rolex used movements from aegler and cases from another company beginning with D ahhh dennison they never made their own watches , crazy eh , they became a charity to avoid taxs yet didnt donate to anybody ( nobody looks through your tax records if your a reg'd charity ) true , the founder reckons ge made the name up but admitted rolls royce were the best engineers Rol ex hmm
Selling something AS a Rolex, that would be illegal. This is selling a great looking watch for a fair margin from manufacturing. Make no mistake- the Steinhart doesnt cost much less to make than the Rolex. Ok, lets say HAlf as much. Still a huge markup for Rolex.
I have great appreciation for homage watches, especially one that emulates one of the most classic watches of all time, the Pepsi Rolex GMT-Master. The Steinhart pays respect to a great watch created for Pan-Am pilots in the 1950’s and remains one of the most sought after watches by enthusiasts. Although strikingly similar to the GMT-Master, the Steinhart is clearly not a Rolex but beautiful nonetheless.
In all the decades I've been wearing watches: Omegas, Hamilton, Seikos, Casios, Timex and yes homage watches including a Steinhart Sub and GMT, never, not once, has anyone commented on my watch. 99% of people are to oblivious to notice. Of the 1% of people that do notice, 99% won't mention it. It's only that rare breed, the watch geek that will (a) notice, and (b) actually say anything to you about it. So don't worry about any potential embarrassment of having to respond to "Is that a real Rolex" with "no, it's a Steinhart/Parnis/Tisell/Squale/etc/etc." Odds are it'll never happen!
@@susfu4988 No I'm not worried - I wouldn't be remotely embarrassed by ANY watch I chose even though as I'm pointing out people regularly do care about what others think. I too have been wearing watches for many years and although this is a hypothetical situation it does actually happen. My comment is on the reaction of the wearer which is often telling. 1.Many homage wearers do because they can't afford or aren't willing to pay for luxury brands and are happy with their choice. 2.Many fake or replica wearers are obviously trying to deceive and will if they can. 3.Many Rolex wearers I've come across are disappointed that people often think their extremely expensive watch is a fake anyway. At the end of the day I love watches and I realised a long time ago that they can be enjoyed at ANY price point so each to their own. ✌
In general I do no have an issue with the homage watches. It’s also weird that the “copying” others is ok between big brands, and frowned upon with less known brands.
Well it’s not that weird considering that the big brands have all contributed to originality and copying between themselves as you say means each have something to gain from one another. The smaller brands contribute nothing in that regard.
They are both beautiful watches and it is just as important as how it makes one feel. If I wear this Steinhart, it would make me just as happy as someone wearing the more expensive counterpart. This channel will soon have over a million subscribers!
I look at homage watches the same way I look at kit cars that were designed to be raced and probably destroyed on a race track. Would I ever take a 1965 Shelby Cobra to the race track? No, never the surviving Shelby Cobras are extremely expensive and rare. However, I would take a Factory Five Racing AC Cobra kit car to the track any day of the week and race the car like the original 65 Shelby Cobra was intended to be treated. Do I ever see myself wearing a Rolex 126710BLRO as it was originally intended to be worn as being steel Rolex Sports model? At the current prices? never. It would be a safe queen or instantly flipped to buy the Steinhart GMT and to pay off the rest of my student loans. The Steinhart GMT in this video is my Cobra kit car. I would wear it as it was meant to be worn, it would probably never leave my wrist for the foreseeable future.
I understand the analogy, but unless you’re buying Rolex watches to flip or as investments, then they are made to be worn. They can be fixed/refurbed and still maintain value. Submariners and GMT’s from the 70’s and 80’s sell for as much as new ones. But yes, if I had an original ‘65 Shelby AC Cobra 427, no, I wouldn’t drive it but every so often, but I’d drive the hell out of my replica.
I've owned a few homage watches and have always been thoroughly impressed with their fit and feel. I am fine with their presence and feel they do contribute to the community by providing certain designs that are typically unavailable to many due to price.
I think watches like Steinhart and Squale possess their own subtle beauty and are a ridiculous bargain for the price. If you account for brands like Oris throwing in the same ETA-2824 for double the price of the Steinhart you begin to realize how much watch you're getting for your money. Thoroughly enjoy your content and the fact that it's very fast paced and engaging in contrast to other channels. Keep up the good work and cheers!

I started off with homage watches, and i enjoyed them and appreciate iconic design cues and offered at affordable prices. it made me pursue for the original design. they are great to play around and can be a conversational piece.
A new Rolex Pepsi is impossible to get in retail stores. It now sells between AUD $ 35,000 to 45,000 in the reseller market here in Australia. Absolutely crazy! Steinhart and other homage makers allow real people with average salary to enjoy the design without paying for a watch the price of a brand new sedan!
I have a Steinhart Ocean One, I have had Tudor, Rolex and other makes but I have to say I get the same pleasure of wearing my homage watch as I did with the “Real” thing! You cut your cloth to suit your finances and I suppose it’s a great watch for the price point and allows those who can’t afford the price of Rolex to have the same “feel” of wearing a similar looking watch!

Homages are not only an easy way to get pieces which are very expensive but the most important of all: they help people to get into the hobby and they are very very funny! Collecting it's not about brands but having fun loving watches, designs and stories and not everybody has the wallet to buy the "big deals"... But homages get close to the thing and are very enjoyable. I like homages a lot and they make people want to be into the hobby, and that is amazing!

They also can be helpful if you want to get the more expensive watch, you can try if you like the look on yourself easily. And last but not least, not everyone can spend 10/15k for a watch.

I am really enjoying Homage watches, as they open the market to established luxury designs to people who are into watches but not necessarily have the budget to go for the originals that came up with the design. Our art teacher always encouraged us to copy in class, because nice art brings joy to people, so spreading that joy is a good thing :)
I see a lot of comments mentioning that everyone can’t afford the Rolex so they turn to a homage. I actually own both watches, the Rolex GMT Master 2 Pepsi and the Steinhart Ocean One GMT 39mm Ceramic Black, and I love them both 😊 They both have a spot in my collection and they both fill totally different purposes. I work at a kindergarten and I use my Steinhart as a daily beater, since it sometimes can become quite rough when playing around with 17 children all day long 😂 I find my work to be the perfect place for a homage watch, that’s sturdy and of good quality in itself and does not cost a fortune so that I can easily play around and bash it without worrying about damaging it. And still I get the look that I want 👍

My biggest issue with high end watches, besides the ridiculous mark-ups due to the brand name is the fear that I'll feel to accidentally break or lose the watch that costs a cool 10k. That is the exact and very best difference between homage and copy to this day - at least for me. On the other hand - if I put it this way - is PLIMA t-shirt an homage to well known brand PUMA? Just caught myself in the loop haha : ))))
I love good watches, and I love watching your channel, and I admit, I just subscribed mainly because I am one of those who rarely subscribes to anything for fear of being "watched", HA! Get it? Being "Watched"..... I love your channel because you are casual and you are not showy or flashy. You just tell it how it is. You are "real", not fake. This is a talent not many on UA-cam have, but you have it. Now, as for the homage watches, I want to say this, that I saved and saved in order to buy the James Bond watch, the Omega SeaMaster Automatic in Blue and I love it -love it -love it. It was expensive, but I get many compliments and I feel differently when I wear it. It's strange how a beautiful watch will make me feel important. Someday I will pass it on to my son because he loves it too (he loves to remind me that I once said that). I love companies that put in the hard work of coming up with beautiful design ideas that are so breathtaking, innovative and durable that they become "timeless" icons and other companies want to emulate them. In my mind, it's kind of like how Hyundai emulates the BMW and Mercedes Benz in their designs. What I appreciate about companies like ROLEX and OMEGA is that they go beyond and they layout vast sums of money to sponsor hard working athletes, enormous sporting events, or putting on fund raIsing productions for the poor and needy and that is something you will rarely see the homage companies do. At the same time, I understand that there are many people who cannot afford a beautiful ROLEX or Patek Philleppe. And that is why I support the idea of homage watch manufacturers, as long as they do not attempt to copy every detail and make fakes. I would love to be the winner of your contest and go on watching your UA-cam videos and spread the word to all my friends who also love watches (which is all of them). Thank you for the opportunity. You are a nice person.
The array of the homage watches are immense, going from literally copies to tribute rendering works, sometimes improving from the original. In this case I like the coined edge from the steinheart and the combined ceramic bezel more than the original. Love your videos keep it up!
The Pepsi GMT is my favorite design and my grail watch but it would be impossible for me to get one with the waitinglists and not having a history with my AD. I would love to have this Steinhart beacuse in the end it is a great watch, good quality and a good movement and it could easy cost the double.
Frank Nielsen The Tudor black bay GMT is a really good shout imo. The Rolex GMT master ii is incredible to look at but I honestly do prefer the vintage inspired design of the Tudor GMT with a Pepsi bezel.
I think the Tudor is a better looking watch than the Rolex. I almost ended up with one, but the date issue scared me off, plus I wanted an omega. Looks are of course subjective, but I just think the Tudor is a better looking watch.

It's also in the movement, try your Steinhard in 5 years from now and look at it's second deviation per day , compare that to Rolex. Besides from the fact that materials used in the Steinhart are from a much lower qty so it probably won't make the 5 years anyway.
The value of a Rolex is easily justified in the MSRP price. As with most reputable luxury watches, designing and building watches from the ground up has its cost. The testing, design and backing a quality product along with the marketing, building a brands empire. It’s much easier to copy/paste an existing design, skew it a bit then slap an off the shelf $60 movement in it and call it a day. The over inflated value in the head of the problem. I’ll give you that, when a $9000 Rolex becomes a $16,000 watch. That’s BS.
@@SG-wj2qj This is all true. However, my new Omega Seamaster outshines the 2019 Rolex Sub in almost every way, including a superior movement, for half the price. Rolex has purposely increased the price of their product by about 20% per year since around 1986. In 1986 there was nothing to compete with a Rolex Sub. Today, with technology, there are many competitors. Rolex still looks the best, to my eye, but my Seamaster runs better than any Rolex that I've ever owned. Keep in mind that I've owned 5 Subs from 1986 to 1998 and finally walked away when I began to find Omega and Breitling pieces at half the price. It's a matter of preference and choice for sure. Rolex is a fantastic company, but so is Omega and Breitling.
Not saying they are same. All I can say, just take look yourself whether Steinhart Ocean 1 for example keeps up or not. Check some ETA2824 credits and history. You may change your perception about the movement as in doubt the watch can outlive hardly 5 years. Last thing to mention is inner antireflexive coating on the Steinhart's Ocean One saphire glass - unlike Submariner. The other fact is 316L vs 916L is not the issue - Rolex used 316L steel for many many years. Just give it a check. My 5 cents.
So good to see you again Jen. Great video and loving the teeshirt. Love a good homage. As you say, some do come very close to replicating exactly. Horses for courses, you buy what you like, homage or not as long as you are enjoying your watch that's all that counts 😊
I don’t mind homage watches because everything is an homage at this point. And I think that people that hate them, hate mostly the fact that it is more difficult to see that they own a specific expensive piece. There is a lot of vanity among watches enthusiasts and we can see that relatively affordable watches can be disregarded based in their price alone (cheap vs affordable for ex).
No, everything is not an homage. Design style is derivative in all aspects of life, but that's a shallow excuse to purchase a blatant copy. Stein hart is basically a legal replica, and that's never classy. Time will earn your more respect than this fake.
what are the Lange one , Zeitwerk, Datograph homaging? And that's just from Lange. What about the Cartier Santos, the Vacheron Overseas, the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms, the Richard Mille RM-02... original designs keep coming out all the time, it's just that it takes effort and money to do them. Homages are just for brands that want to exploit a legal hole and sell their own version of another brand's design.
@@Chris-es3wf Yes, but the basic question is legal. Rolex does not own the design of the pepsi gmt. What I meant is that the watch has meaning for the owner not to people around that get fooled looking at a type of design that almost every watch brand makes! For example the classic diver watch (created by Blancpain by the way). Is it unfair to Rolex? In a certain way yes, but it is also a big advantage! Eventually everybody wants to own one of those and not one of the replicas! By the way Rolex could make 600 dollars pepsi gmt? But they don’t! Why? Because they do not need or want to! Rolex do not loses costumers with the Steinhart... They gain prestige and the ability to sell quality steel watches at the highest price possible. It is a better business to successfully sell 10000$ watches than 600 ones!
Thanks for another great video, Jenni. I must say, looking at them side-by-side, I prefer the look of the Steinhart. The one thing that the Rolex (and the Tudor GMT) offer above most others is the “jump” hour hand (traveller’s GMT), which is super useful if/when I go traveling again.
Nice review! Very informative. A friend of mine who is a Jeweller has and GMT with a Pepsi Ceramic. Will always go with the original Rolex. It also increased in value since he bought it which was 4 years ago. I guess if you don't have the money you could always get a Replica Rolex for much less than 640 Euros as well.
@@NAMICA.Watches Yeah yeah definitely not a replicate was more trying to give an extreme example. I wouldn't also be inclined to fund someone whose business model is to create an exact copy of something change the logo and start marketing it. In my eyes I see it wrong. If they would have kept the same style and gave it their own twist I wouldn't have any issue with it. Just my thoughts.
@@NAMICA.Watches I personally can spot the differences. Anyone can do whatever you want but when you are getting something like the copy, usually the copy has a lower build quality. Now if the price difference is something you want to pay for that additional quality that a lot of people cant notice is a different question.
Very well balanced review. Nothing beats the real deal, but I do think brands like Steinhart have a great niche they can fill as they can make the experience of owning a mechanical watch with great design heritage a reality for many people who would have otherwise have been forced to buy a real Rolex knock-off.
I really love homage watches as I think it perfectly encapsulates the raw/true beauty behind the big brand watches, just in a more subtle and classy way without all the hype surrounding them.
Happens all the time, and when they do take the plunge, they now have the real deal they can wear out to events and such while also having the homage as the beater to take to the pool or play some high impact sports.
@@panyc10 I agree, I used to own many but have narrowed down the collection to four watches. GMT/steel bracelet, Diver/rubber, Field/leather, and a sporty tritium/Milanese. Any more and it gets difficult to rotate and wear them enough to stay wound. Still this is the most common answer I've seen as to justify buying the real deal after buying a homage (or the other way around)
I bought a Steinhart gmt about 8 months ago and although I have enjoyed it I can't say it has captured my heart. I was drawn to it originally because of its obvious resemblance to the Rolex but certainly didn't want a copy. The Steinhart quality is topnotch especially for the price but at the end of the day it is not the watch I really want. I won't be selling it but I suspect it will be the one and only homage watch in my collection. Good work with your views and reviews and keep it up!
I cannot afford the Rolex gmt and I’m not entirely sold on the Tudor gmt but this watch is starting to check off some boxes with me. The more I discover about the Steinhart quality the more I am liking the price.
Beautiful episode and images! I exactly think the same as you do: homage watches can give access to people in love with a design to certain watches to discover the look, the design and be sure that when they are pulling the trigger they are going confident! Plus, not everyone can in a life spent that money to get their grail watch so it permits to some people to live their dreams at their level. There is nothing wrong in it at the moment you know where are the boundaries concerning homage and real brand and that you are happy with what you have! Great watch anyway and impressive finishing for that money!
I have a Steinhart Vintage Ocean 1 Red, which I wear as often as my Vintage Omega Seamaster and my Rolex Explorer 1 It keeps great time and looks great on the wrist
I look at them pretty close to how you describe as a "trial" watch before blowing away thousands on a real deal. Another aspect for me is that for about one grand I can get myself a small selection of pretty decent homage watches (consider I can spend a long time to do research on what is the best brand for the money, which often the answer is San Martin), to mix it up and suit my mood better. Another nice thing about them is that you don't have to be so afraid of them, but at the same time you do learn to subconsciously learn to be weary of it being there (like for instance when doing some really dirty or rough work, or just in general not bang your left wrist on any metal surface). And on a different note, I am a huge fan of watches, and I constantly dream of Omega, Rolex, Patek, etc, I would not actually purchase one at this point in my life simply because it wouldn't pair well with my income or savings. Instead I would like to have a small carefully selected collection with a mix of everything from Rolex homages to more original designs from Timex, Citizen, Seiko, etc that are in the same pricerange. And this is also why I think the Bulova Lunar Pilot is a blessing for someone like me, because even though I could just drain a huge sum of my savings on a Speedmaster, this Bulova is a good option, and I don't even feel like it's a cheap replacement of a Speedmaster, rather a watch with it's own history, it's own unique design, and frankly a good looking piece. The big, black dial does in my eyes reminds me of the dark emptiness of space, and it even makes me feel lonely when looking at it, and I like that feeling because I think that's how the astronauts would have felt it too when being alone and so mindblowingly far from the rest of the human race. And on a last point here about homage watches. And this is more a question based around a critical observation: Why would a $250 Chinese Daytona replica be considered a homage, whilst something like Tag Heuer Autavia is not? I have seen homages of other popular watches which also have done several huge design choices that differ them from their "original", just as TH has done, but they are still considered homage watches? Is it simply because of the different price and movement of the Tag that makes them not a homage?
I really like the Steinhart homage. Obviously the fit and finish are no where near that of the Rolex, but it is a way to get a reasonable approximation of the OG without paying thousands of dollars. Also, with the homage, you are getting a fairly good timekeeper with the sapphire crystal, Selitta movement and ceramic bezel. A few months too late for the giveaway, eh?
I own a few of both makes and Rolex isn’t close to 20 times the craftsmanship of Steinhart, that’s the price difference! At a stretch the Rolex should probably sell for 3-4 times the Steinhart. Really makes you think just how large the margins are for Rolex if Steinhart can make a profit at €500-600…
Very well presented, and explained. Looks like good value for the money, and I feel it's how you get a feel for a watch, everyone chases a holy grail, but also need a day to day watch, which you feel comfortable with. Thanks all.
Love your videos!!! I do however think that certain homage watch brands come across as cheap and can be seen as essentially a "replica" but steinhart is quite special.... They have good workmanship and quality which is something that can give us plebs a glimpse into the world of Swiss craftsmanship at a much more affordable price point!!
I believe, homage watches are a great way to experiment the look, size, weight and even the feeling of a grail. I particularly look for homages that still keep a personality of their own without being a blatant replica! Love your Channel, Love Watches! Thanks
I find it interesting that we are even having a discussion regarding homage watches. The idea of brands using design cues and styles from an original design and producing a cheaper alternative are nothing new. Look around and in almost every other business this practice is not only condoned but encouraged to provide value to the consumer. From electronics to foodstuffs there are “branded” goods and shops own etc. Personally, I think there is a lot of snobbery as people wish to protect the status of elite brands.

A “good” watch is one that brings a smile to its owner’s face. Maybe it’s out of a sense of pride, accomplishment, or simply because he or she likes the watch. An homage, an original, or something in between can generate a smile. At the end of the day, there’s room for all watch collectors. ❤️

I agree. Saw this comment after posting mine about all jeans being 'homage' to the Levi's 5-pocket after their patent expired in 1890.

Well it’s not that weird considering that the big brands have all contributed to originality and copying between themselves as you say means each have something to gain from one another.
The smaller brands contribute nothing in that regard.

Excellent analogy!

I can see someone buying an homage watch -particularly a lovely one like that Steinihart. I love many types of watches and can't afford some of the more exclusive ones! Thanks Jenni.
Congrats on 50k, 100k soon. A Batman shirt in a Pepsi video?
I started off with homage watches, and i enjoyed them and appreciate iconic design cues and offered at affordable prices. it made me pursue for the original design. they are great to play around and can be a conversational piece.
A new Rolex Pepsi is impossible to get in retail stores. It now sells between AUD $ 35,000 to 45,000 in the reseller market here in Australia. Absolutely crazy! Steinhart and other homage makers allow real people with average salary to enjoy the design without paying for a watch the price of a brand new sedan!
Bro, the Steinhart GMT doesn't even have a bi-directional bezel.

I feel Steinhart make great watches at a reasonable price.
An homage watch got me started in collecting! My first was a seiko sea urchin Pepsi bezel hahaha love it
Do you know a trusted place to get a homage Rolex Pepsi or other? Can’t afford the real deal sadly 🥺
@@comeon1919 sorry typo in my original comment but yea, the seiko urchin (SNZF15) is exactly where I would start again.
Its a seiko 5 sports, its already so affordable there's no clones out there so you can basically trust wherever you buy. I think I got mine on ebay new in box for ~$125.
It has a pepsi bezel, 100m water resist, display case back to see the rotor moving, and the mods are endless! You can get new bezels, sapphire crystal swaps, anything

Raj Gill yes but I mean a copy Rolex with roles on🤓
When I see a Rolex owner: "he/she has a good income and wants to show it. Probably doesn’t care much about watches"
When I see a Steinhart owner: "oh, he/she really likes watches and enjoying them"
Homages are not only an easy way to get pieces which are very expensive but the most important of all: they help people to get into the hobby and they are very very funny! Collecting it's not about brands but having fun loving watches, designs and stories and not everybody has the wallet to buy the "big deals"... But homages get close to the thing and are very enjoyable. I like homages a lot and they make people want to be into the hobby, and that is amazing!
I really love homages watches for various reasons: they easily can get you into the hobby and instead of fashion watches you often gets a good bang for buck. They also can be helpful if you want to get the more expensive watch, you can try if you like the look on yourself easily. And last but not least, not everyone can spend 10/15k for a watch.
Congratulations on 50k subscribers!
Homage watches are great option if you want to wear iconic designs without breaking the bank.
Keep up the great work. I love the videos!
I mean, it's not like you can just go into a Rolex store and pick up a gmt pepsi, besides the Steinhart has its own completely separate charm and it just feels like a completely different watch. I really like it.
Well said. I like the Pepsi... but not “7000€ Like” 😂
Plus Steinhard has a good Swiss movement and look better built than more expensive pieces.
I always like your well thought-out & nuanced reviews. I Adore Mechanical Watches & have done so for 40 years! I am 67 now & my first "Real" mechanical watch was An Omega Speedmaster 145.022-74. I wore it for 22 years. I own 2 Steinharts. An Ocean One Vintage & An Ocean 39 Explorer Plexi. These watches " Homage" the Rolex Submariners 6200 & 5513, respectively. 6200s are VERY Rare as are 5513s with Explorer dials & i think it is crazy to pay the silly money needed to obtain one. The Steinhart Ocean 39 Explorer Plexi is one of The Best Homages i have ever seen & i adore the Elegance of those smaller Subbies. Great Video! Please, Take Care & Stay Safe!!!
I actually own both watches, the Rolex GMT Master 2 Pepsi and the Steinhart Ocean One GMT 39mm Ceramic Black, and I love them both 😊
They both have a spot in my collection and they both fill totally different purposes. And still I get the look that I want 👍
how is it when it comes to water resistence water proofness specially when in the swimming pool swimming hanging out or at the beach in the sea water?
My Replica Rolex GMT looks just the same as your watch for $500
Rommel Saint Good for you 👍 My genuine Rolex looks like it should look and is a statement of a achievement in my life. To each his own 👍
@@GoranKlintenheim My Fake Rolex looks like it should and you wouldn't notice a difference? I'm not bothered its a fake and it only cost a fraction of yours?
Rommel Saint As I wrote above: To each his own man 😂 If you’re happy with wearing something and pretending it’s something else, good for you. I personally don’t get it. If you don’t want to buy a Rolex and think it’s to expensive, why buy a replica that’s pretending it’s the thing that you don’t want to buy??? Why not buying something else entirely? Is it to impress people who can’t tell the difference? To impress girls with wealth that you don’t have? But hey, if you like wearing something made in a Chinese sweat-shop for a fraction of the cost you paid for it, and pretending that it’s something that it ain’t, then good for you 👍 I really don’t understand why you keep writing the same thing over and over? 😂 Sure, you paid $500 for a cheap replica, and you think you got a “sweat deal”. And ok, in your own world it looks the same... 😳 But in my world, it doesn’t matter if it’s the best replica in the world, it’s STILL NOT A ROLEX 😂 Doesn’t matter how hard you try, you’re still wearing a fake... It’s the same thing with the Adidas-pants we all wore in high school. There were a lot of guys wearing fakes. But we all knew who wore fakes and who wore the real deal. And wearing the real deal is just cooler, no matter how hard you try convincing yourself otherwise 👍🍾
I think that homage watches are a great way of having the 'watch of your dream' on your wrist but on a budget. Guys like me will never afford 15000 for a Rolex and my only option to wear something similar is a homage watch.
Great review btw.
I like that homage watches shows that you can still have quality for less. Also that the other companies are not using secret materials in their products. Very informative video, love the content.
If someone is passionate enough about watches, can't afford his/her grail watch yet & dedicates time to find a quality homage brand as Steinhart. That person deserves respect. BTW great videos, keep up with the great work.
I disagree. To me, it says they didn't do enough research and their knowledge is limited. Otherwise they'd easily find an iconic alternative in their price range. Pretty straightforward.
@@Chris-es3wf good point however, sometimes you may not find at first appealing another watch, and if you take your time to find a company using GREAT swiss movements such as Steinhart instead of getting a fake watch, for me that's perfectly respectable and in most cases it is the first step before getting full into this hobby
I agree how the homage can be a great way to have a “test drive”, given that it is impossible to find Pepsi models in ADs to try on. Great video!
I love the look and feel of the Steinhart. They're very close to Rolex's original design without being a clone. Great video.

When I first started as a collector I would stay clear of homage watches as I felt they were cheaper quality version of the real deal at best. Now that I have been lucky enough to get the Rolex and others, my views have softened and I've even bought a few homages, mostly to feature on my channel.
And you have to remember that even huge brands have copied one another to some extent, sometimes blatantly.

Nothing wrong with homage watches in my opinion, and certainly in my experience buying a good quality homage watch has helped provide that certain look and feel of a desirable mechanical watch while waiting for an opportunity to obtain the original; if it's nicely made go for it!
Oh, did I get my comment in on time for the drawing? Hope so! I love Steinhart and have been looking at them recently. I like homage since it makes something special accessible and it's still high quality in this case. New subscriber- looking forward to seeing more!
Homage watches are cool - but deep down I would always know it’s not the ‘real thing’ and crave the real deal.
We all love the Rolex designs, they're timeless and function great. In recent times the prices of Rolex (new and used) have skyrocketed, they have become unattainable for most people. So what do we do when we want to see a certain design on our wrist but can't afford it.. we buy homage watches. And I have to say Steinhart makes the best! The quality you get a that price point is amazing. I have held an 'Ocean 39 Ceramic' in my hand and I have to say they feel absolutely solid, especially the bracelet. Love your video as always. As I wrote in your post you did about homages this watche, it is for people that LOVE the world of watches and the excellent design of rolex but do not have the funds to buy the dream watch in a reasonable time. A copy is a watch that could hypothetically be passed off as the original, anything else is a homage. I own a Steinhart Vintage Red, and it's superb
That is the exact and very best difference between homage and copy to this day - at least for me. On the other hand - if I put it this way - is PLIMA t-shirt an homage to well known brand PUMA? Just caught myself in the loop haha : ))))
Love homages! A look-a-like for a fraction of the price and a decent build quality!
Frank Nielsen yeah but it’s blatantly copying an iconic design. There is power and n intangible value in design itself.
I refuse to get a real pepsi GMT cos there are dickheads cheap ass bitchez buying the fake crap
@@gmshadowtraders So you don't buy anything decent for yourself in any aspect of life? Frankly, That's no different than buying a rolex to impress people. Your actions are being dictated by others which is never good...
This just shows how inflated are the prices of 'luxury' watches. The value of the Rolex is in the head of the people, not in the actual watch itself.
That’s BS.
Thijs Terwiel The Sellita SW200-1 is a workhorse and trust me, it will last way longer than just 5 years.
My 5 cents.
Wow, love the way your camera make the Steinhart looks more valuable than it cost.. really great job!
I like the homage watches. This one in particular is very nice. Great channel and keep the great videos coming 😊
Love the homage simply because of it's affordable price!
Totally agree on that approach

Certainly an option one can consider...
Not sure I would go for that though
Very well balanced review. Nothing beats the real deal, but I do think brands like Steinhart have a great niche they can fill as they can make the experience of owning a mechanical watch with great design heritage a reality for many people who would have otherwise have been forced to buy a real Rolex knock-off.
I really love homage watches as I think it perfectly encapsulates the raw/true beauty behind the big brand watches, just in a more subtle and classy way without all the hype surrounding them.

Would not be surprised if getting a taste by buying an homage watch would lead to getting the original one.
Happens all the time, and when they do take the plunge, they now have the real deal they can wear out to events and such while also having the homage as the beater to take to the pool or play some high impact sports.
@@NOLASkaGuitarist the point of having two watches with exactly the same look is beyond me.
Check out Ball watches.

I really like homage watches when they‘re quality ones and also have a good automatic movement.
I have a Steinhart Vintage Ocean 1 Red, which I wear as often as my Vintage Omega Seamaster and my Rolex Explorer 1
It keeps great time and looks great on the wrist
So sorry, forgot to say, fantastic video and fantastic channel. Do keep up the great work Jenni!
Thanks
Forget that it's a homage, and just judge it on its own merits. That's the way i see it.
Personally, I think there is a lot of snobbery as people wish to protect the status of elite brands.
great point
