    TODAY'S TOPICS:
Is Carnivore safe to do forever? Are there people who SHOULDN'T eat an all-meat diet? Should we fear liver? Does fasting give any extra benefit? Should post-menopausal women change their macros? Does Dr. Chaffee use salt and seasonings? What's the WORST thing that "lenient carnivores" still eat? What does Dr. Chaffee care about on a cholesterol panel?
Kelly Hogan has eaten nothing but meat, eggs, and dairy since October of 2009, and Dr. Anthony Chaffee has about 10 years of Carnivore experience. The two of them talk through their experiences and answer common (and UNcommon) Carnivore questions.

My dad is 80 years old and he's been eating carnivore his whole life, and everyone in the family was telling him he was going to die early .. He's never been obese and still lives on his own, biking everyday and going out dancing every weekend... Recently started dating a younger woman in her 50's 😅 He's literally the only person I know who avoided nutrition advice from the government and just ate meat, fish and eggs ... Also he's never been on any meds and he's far from frail ❤

I was vegan for 2 years post colon cancer resection surgery. After 2 years of the vegan diet, I became so severely anemic my doc said I’d need blood transfusions. She told me to eat beef and prescribed iron. So I began eating meat, reversed the anemia to normalcy within a couple months and without blood transfusions. Today I am carnivore and have never felt better. I follow Drs, Ken Berry, Shawn Baker, Jason Fung and you both, Dr Chaffee and Kelly Hogan! Grateful for this interview!

      Nice! glad you reversed it!
Several years ago, I had strayed away from my habit of eating mostly meat, high fat, and fairly low carb. For some dumb reason I hadn't put 2 & 2 together at the time but I kept getting more bloated, more depressed, exhausted, and even experiencing psychosis. A good friend at the time had suggested an "organic, all natural" pescatarian and ultimately a vegan diet as the "solution" to all my issues. I tried pescatarian for several months and just kept feeling worse. I was eating tons of supposedly "healthy" foods - lots of veggies, fruits, nuts, hemp seeds, lentils and lean fish. Nothing was working so she convinced me to try 100% vegan. She thought I just needed to cut out all animal product 🙄. I cut out the fish and went vegan for 2 solid weeks and have never felt worse. I thought I was dieing. The bloating was so bad after eating even the tiniest meal or a few bites that it felt like I was going to explode. Finally something clicked and I'd remembered never feeling that awful when I used to eat lots of eggs and chicken and yogurt. So I went back in the low carb/keto direction and almost immediately (within a week or two) most of those awful symptoms vanished. Now I'm strict keto/no more than 20 grams per day. It's amazing what this type of diet does for our bodies and how many lies there are about how awful meat and animal fats are for our health.

I am also 76 and have been very low carb for years, virtually free of sugar, grains, starches, alcohol, seed oils and very low on seed oils and processed foods. In both a new doctor's interview and a medicare survey, my lack of medication, arthritis, diabetes, HBP, imbalance/falls etc and my unusual activity level were near astonishing. I report that I had arthritis in my 20's, which started me on my nutrition journey, and then pre-diabetes in my 60's (too many "healthy whole grains"), which brought me to Atkins and my very low carb diet. I'm now trying the 80/20 carnivore, 4 meals, pattern and surprised at how much more cheerful and motivated I am! Hi Donna and Karen
I will be 60 in August . I just kicked off my carnivore experience with a 3 day fast, the a 2 steak dinner with butter. After all the various methods of low carb were evaluated, and revisiting my youth when I would just devour meat, I decided that for me it seems meat is the ultimate food. Low carb is no carb which is best.
Did you have any struggles? What are you eating? Of course I am a 224 lb guy, 6'1". So I expect my needs are different. I was 236 last week when I came down with COVID. I ate like a pig first 3 days, a whole pound cake, 6 ice cream bars, a whole cake a few days prior, some candy I found, chips, I mean, gosh it was just out of control. Now, I feel so good after a 3 day liquid only fast. And the prize was 2 pan seared NY Strips with peppercorn and butter, on the outdoor grill in a cast iron skillet! I ate those down like a chocolate cake! 🤣🤣🤣

After almost two years carnivore, my fiancé ate high fat and he had diarrhea everyday until he started eating more. Adding more protein made it worse but more fat was the solution. Turns out he wasn’t eating enough for the bile he was producing. Eating more made his poop solid and he’s growing even more muscle without the gym.
I started eating more fat and less protein and started losing weight again after a plateau.
We eat about 80-90 percent fat by calories or 60 percent fat by volume.
Learning how to eat intuitively has been hard and I finally feel like it’s making sense. Over two years after starting.
Edit: I eat mostly pork. Beef hurts my stomach and I can only digest small amounts of it without pain and constipation. I eat mostly home smoked pork belly and pork chops cooked in rendered pork belly fat. My fiancés eats mostly burgers and bacon. A lot of carnivores demonize pork and that’s ridiculous. (I’ve had that since childhood for an unknown reason) The tinnitus is getting less-loud very gradually. I only lose about 2lbs per month, which is a bummer, but that’s just vanity. He loves homemade banana-milkshake, which I guess counts in a way...and will reluctantly agree to some frozen berries or a slice of apple occasionally. But he never, ever asks for fruit and trying to make him eat most, will result in a screaming fit.
I don't know why, since he certainly loves sweets and prefers fruity sweets like gummy bears or lollies to chocolate (although we limit stuff with sugar, obviously). But you can't even tempt him with very sweet tropical fruit.

My 2 favorite Carnivores! YAY. As far as protein vs fat...I really heard you when I transitioned from Keto to Carnivore 3 weeks ago to listen to my body when my addictions are under control and for me I am Pro Fat. If my meat is too lean, I will add 1/2 a stick of butter or 6 slices of bacon to the meal. I crave it so much that I have wanted just the butter. It's something I have always craved and I always believed this was contributing to my heavier weight. Now I know better as the weight is coming down as I eat all the extra fat. While I need to lose about 45 lbs, I'm doing this to combat the depression and anxiety that I have been plagued with since my teens. A great lady I heard recently said Food doesn't make us fat. Unhealthy food screws up our hormones and that is what makes us fat. I know once my body is in balance, the weight will follow and I'll be happier during all the steps of my journey.

Amen to ALL of that Lily!! I could change the name & the story would be the same, it's uncanny~ I used to be SO stingy w/the butter, even though I really, really wanted it- same goes for salt. It's ridiculous how oppositional I was eating to what my body knew it needed. I spent over 20 yrs eating 4-5 times a day, couple ounces of super lean protein w/a handful of veg or fruit~ grazing really, & nearly zero fat. So then I ended up w/a miniature-sized stomach, super dry hair & skin, anxiety/depression(that was from teens on however), errggghhh!! I've been doing IF w/keto for over a year, no sugar at all, but still using sweeteners because I love to bake & make candy. It simply is not going to get me where I want to be~ & not just the 45 lbs, it's the superior overall health & well-being I'm after. I've always strived towards longevity & maintaining muscle mass/flexibility, yet at 56 yrs old, I'm just now figuring out how much more I can do~ AND how simple it really is! Going carnivore has been a massive blessing- already- & the depression/anxiety was the very first change~ it simply lifted one day, & I do not intend to invite it back🤸‍♀️ I think you will be way past thrilled here real soon~ take care, stand strong, & know that in a short time from now, you likely won't even remember how crappy you used to feel~ sending love from AZ~Samantha🙋‍♀️

I have been keto for 2+ years and tried a carnivorish move with Beef, Butter, Bacon and Eggs (BBBE) that Dr. Berry advocates. Whoa! That was amazing about the way I felt and the way my body reacted. I didn't lose weight, but I did lose a lot of inches as my body started changing. I think that a little bit of carbs in the summer will work best for me as I like to eat local and then in the winter do pure carnivore. This is just me, I don't preach that to anyone else. This was a very informative video and I enjoyed seeing Kelly and Dr Chaffe together. Kelly’s questions were many of the ones I needed answers to and Dr Chaffe answered them well. I feel a bit more informed about being an 81 /yo woman and starting a “true carnivore” diet for myself. I don’t need to lose weight, but my thyroid is not working well so I am on 75mg of Levothyroxine daily. While I have been “mostly ketovore “ for several years, my hope is that I can get my thyroid back working again and will be able to drop the Levothyroxine eventually through a “true carnivore” diet. I am quite physically fit and usually walk 4-6miles/day as well as do strength training with a trainer 2X/wk at the gym.

Listening to this presentation has CONVINCED me to take the next step, from current keto with light use of greens, (i.e. micros, brassicas) and berries, plus light cheese/yogurt/cottage cheese. I will now transition to PURE CARNIVORE (target date beginning when I run out of my few remaining cheese and sweetener supplies). I'll try eliminating sweeteners and most spices, too. Although giving up coffee like some kind of a wild animal may just be asking too much. So it's going to be meat, eggs (didn't catch comments about that in this vid) and butter.
I made this decision because you asked the right question, and Dr. C said something to the effect that 95% of the benefit from carnivore comes from eliminating the last little bit of crap.. Those are the "goodies" that keto seems to have allowed me, but I'm IN for the win!!!
So far, I've lost over 100 lbs on keto but still have some irritating symptoms from my myasthenia gravis (that almost killed me some time back). Maybe a pure carnivore lifestyle will take me to that next peak of re-establishing my health. I'm only 25 lbs away from the weight I graduated from the Coast Guard port security school when I was 20 years old (now 40). So many years being FAT. I peaked at over 340 lbs.
I'm working to spread the word after being part of the problem as a biology teacher, who once believed the crap my government continues to stuff down our throats. The false peer studies of the 70's have had lasting implications on longevity. Corrupt parasites are KILLING PEOPLE with phony science. It seems to take DECADES to repair the damage to society from this kind of corruption (i.e. the phony Autism links to vaccines thanks to another corrupt study). It seems that the food and medical industries' aim today is profit through disinformation. Obedience with what some government dufus tells us will keep killing, so it's up to people like you and Dr. C to keep up your good work.

I'm with you on this. I definitely take seriously the issue of organ meats. I'm going to eliminate them for a time as an experiment. But I have seemed to feel better with fasting. The thing is it can easily be overdone, particularly by those who get obsessive about health. I don't do fasting all the time. Some days of the week I eat freely as much as my hunger allows. I mix that with some intermittent fasting and occasional extended fasting. Consider hunter-gatherers. It's true they don't eat organ meats every day. But fasting is one of the most common of practices. So, I do think we can learn a lot from following the example of traditional societies.

On a somewhat coincidental carnivore note: One of my best recipes was handed down by my grandfather who was part of a traveling band of clowns which toured the country in the 1930s and 40s. Not only did he fully participate as a performer (juggling and spraying seltzer mostly) but he was also in charge of the Clown Chuckwagon, and over the years, came up with a nice selection of mostly campfire stews (or "or stewge" as Gramps used to call them),, soups and casseroles. One of my favorites, casseroles, which I still prepare frequently, consists of baked beans and wieners (for the KETO portion of the meal), macaroni and cheese. and a couple handfuls of those big orange circus peanuts - a sweet yet savory bake-up that's a hit with everyone who tries it. Gramps had one clown name for performing with his fellow troupers at carnivals, civic events, etc., throughout the central Midwest ""Antsy Pants" - but around the campfire at breakfast or suppertime, when most of these talented vagabond buffoons had removed their make-up and hung their giant shoes in their campers, (but oddly enough not all of them) Gramps was affectionately known among the boys as "Yummo." He told me how it wasn't unusual for farmers to donate a hen or two and maybe a couple of dozen eggs, in return for a brief barnyard slapstick performance by a couple of the boys for the farmer, his family and his hired hands.. He also told me as soon as he got back to camp with the chickens, the alcoholic Geek who traveled with them would inevitably beg permission to bite the heads of the pullets when Gramps was ready to get those birds cooking. Seemed that this particular Geek actually not only savored the taste of the live chickens he was required to eat (which were usually provided by the promoter of the event at which the troupe was performing) - but craved more when "off=the-clock" Talk about a Carnivore diet!! Wow!!! Reportedly, he was known to comment that "live chicken pairs well with a pint of Carstairs White Seal Blended." By the way, Grandma also traveled with Gramps. She was the seamstress - making a good number of the clown suits from her own design and repairing all them when required. So of course Gram and Gran rolled along from town- to -town with a big foot pump operated sewing machine in their trailer, - in addition to all the pots, pants, cutlery, stirrers, etc. My Dad was born in a campground in Posey County, Indiana, delivered by a local midwife and plopped into a casserole baking dish as soon as Gramps cut the umbilical cord with his second best onion chopping knife. As for me, I married young and did well for myself in doing so. My wife is the daughter of an oiutdoor parking lot magnate in a major city in Ohio. I was dowried with three downtown lots. I've had a comfortable life pretty much doing whatever I want all day while other people collect money on my behalf while sitting down in booths, watching TV, reading (or even snoozing between customers arriving and honking the horns to wake 'em up). Consequently, for awhile, I was able to open a couple of storefront business which specialized in selling "clown suits for the whole family," including custom made if somebody wanted them - and even clown suits for the family pets. The seamstresses I hired used Gram's patterns, of course. . The stores were called "Hem and Ha!" - and with every sale, I usually threw in a copy of one of Gramps' recipes for a clown casseroles, "silly stew," "buffoon bread, "Punchinello Porridge,," or what have you. Of course, they all pair well with seltzer water. Thank you for allowing me to share Laura Spath . Bon apetit!😁

Kelly, if you have a chance to interview another carnivore doctor in the future, could you ask about the potential concerns regarding liver health and high fat diets? From what I have read in the research, high fat diets (especially those high in saturated fat) have been linked to poor liver health, i.e. cholestasis, steatosis, etc. Hearing the research related to high fat diets and their effect on liver health has me a bit concerned about the long-term effects of doing a carnivore (or keto) diet. It'd be great to hear a carnivore doctor's perspective/rebuttal to "common health knowledge" on the topic of liver health in relation to the carnivore and other high fat diets.

Also have to add that my doctor put me on a statin last year, and I noticed that I was progressively gaining weight with no change to my diet (I am post gastric bypass) and my knee pain increased and that I also had other joint and back pain. I thought the joint pain was due to aging, but after watching Dr. Berry's videos on statin drugs last February, I immediately stopped taking the statin. Since I had GB, I don't eat much anyway, so the excessive weight gain was very confusing for me until I realized that the statin was causing the weight gain, inflammation, and joint pain. After 4 months of being statin-free, I'm still recovering from the damage done to my joints by that drug! I never had a problem with having some carbs in my diet, but now I'm eliminating them from my diet to hopefully reverse the weight gain and joint damage.

Fasting does upregulate autophagy, along with stimulating the release of stem cells, and that is a normal part of human health. But we can also look to traditional societies for evidence. Fasting is extremely common, to such an extent that traditional societies that don't do any fasting at all, intermittent or extended, are rare. For hunter-gatherers, this is often part of a feasting and fasting pattern.

I am 6 months carnivore and I was doing IF, and I loved it but was still having issues with cravings, not healing well, oxalate dumping, constipation. This last month I have been increasing fat and I am noticing that the diabetic sores I've had for years are finally starting to heal plus it's helped with the constipation. I've been using butter successfully to help with sweet cravings as well. About a year ago I started sleeping with my mouth open so I've been having problems with dry mouth and my dentist told me to use xylitol mints, gum and toothpaste. My teeth were getting weak and I was getting cavities from the dry mouth. I stopped using fluoride about 4-5 months ago. I've tried wearing a guard, taping my mouth shut but nothing works solidly. I have been drinking over a gallon of water a day for more than 20 years. I don't drink anything else. I am finding that my cravings increased because of the xylitol. I don't eat any other carbs so I'm still at less than 10 carbs a day. I want to get off the xylitol but I am worried that the dry mouth will ruin my teeth. I've been so lucky to be 71 and still have all but 1 of my teeth. So what I'm looking for is how nutritious is fat for our bodies, and can you overeat it on carnivore? I still have 20-30 lbs to lose and haven't lost any on carnivore. Plus what to do about the dry mouth. I am pretty sure that I will lose the weight eventually so I'm not too worried about eating fat now because I know my body needs it. I've always had really dry skin & hair, probably because of buying into fat being bad and avoiding it most of my life. It's really hard to find the research on what our bodies get from fat. And of course wading through all the controversy. I used herbs all of my life and they worked good for me when I was younger but they haven't really helped with anything else these last few years except for keeping me off insulin which was huge. I started cutting refined carbs 20 years ago, no bread, pasta, potatoes and still ended up pre-diabetic and there is a huge predisposition in our family on both my parent's sides. I was appalled at the diabetes recommended diet because it called for about 10xs at least more carbs than I was eating. So hopefully Dr. Chaffee you have ideas or can point me to research because as far as I am concerned you are the most knowledgeable and enlightened person/Dr. I've found and I've been researching the hell out of it all. Thank you both so much.

Look at what Dr. Cywes says about your list. Do you need it, does it keep you on keto? Do you use it as a bridge or just because it tastes good? Could you live without it? Start dropping some of the things on your list and see how you feel. If you feel better, maybe they were causing inflammation or causing you to still crave carbs. I see things I would automatically eliminate because they would cause me inflammation, but you are the one that needs to do the elimination and testing. Good luck.

Dr. Chaffee is the main man in my life because he sticks to carnivore, is an educated medical doctor and a functional medicine practitioner. He knows all sides. I listen to others but if I'm working on gut health, I don't want anything but meats, water, salt, and right now, coffee and heavy whipping cream (for now).
Post note: The heavy whipping cream I'm using in my coffee causes a lot of phlegm, bloating, and apparently insulin spiking as Dr Chaffee said, keeping me almost out of ketosis. I can do without the dairy if I quit coffee. That's my main downfall right now; I'm a coffee hound. I just started carnivore after low carbs so right now I'm keeping my coffee. I'll work on that when I'm ready, hopefully soon. First step is to cut down on how many cups I have each day. I drink coffee all day long but not enough water. It's a mental thing with me, a comfort food. One step at a time..
