I have not heard of this paint before but the results look great! Thanks for sharing including the issues you had with getting the surface clean. This helps out a lot.
Glad it was helpful!
The fingerprints you got on your box, is actually due to the denatured alcohol containing small amounts of ketones (about 1%) which will eat away at just about any gloves you use, plus latex is not all that resistive to alcohols, and in combo with the ketones is not the greatest choice.
You could get some nice butyl gloves, but that's a bit overkill unless you plan on doing some chemistry videos. Nitrile gloves would hold up better to denatured alcohol, but still presents some issues with the ketones.
For a clean result, you may want to consider using nitrile gloves and 99% isopropanol for PCB cleaning. You could use a combination of a one wash with denatured alcohol, replace your gloves, then follow up with an isopropanol wipe. I know sometimes isopropanol doesn't catch every bit of contaminants where things like methanol in the denatured alcohol provides a better clean, why I'd suggest the double wash.
I love the way it turned out. I love the silver as well but this is cool.
Thanks!
Love this stuff, its great for older cars that you cant get aftermarket taillights for.
I used the red metalcast on the amber parts of a taillight to give a cleaner look to the lens.
Add a couple coats of some high quality clear like sem 1k and it looks like a factory part.
Yes its still amber when it flashes.
The yellow is nice on bare aluminum,it resembles alodine treatment.
I just grabbed a can of green for the latest project, where the car is green and im sticking with that for the side markers and stupid side bumper reflectors to help them blend in a little.
Use a green or red Scotchbrite, then isopropyl on lint free paper towels sold at auto paint stores. A quality wax & grease remover is best to eliminate fisheyes, but yes, you had a glove print. A base coat can be used a “Candy” paint it tinted intermix clear, designed to sprayed over. The more coats of candy will make your project darker. Allow for each coat to flash longer depending on temperature but this helps eliminate runs. A traditional Clear has “UV” protection for sunlight or thru window. This adds up to two layers extra protection for your project from scratches or if placed near window. Hope this helps! ASE Master Tech Retired.
Thanks! In hindsight I should have roughed up the surface a little bit probably with about a 400 or 600 grit wet dry
@@EricStrebel
Sometimes on an unknown surface it'll do strange things, like lift and look like the hammered paint for tool boxes.
Start with very light coats, like a dust almost. Let em flash off and keep doing it. Sometimes it'll seal in the problem instead of a bunch of wet paint with solvent reacting and causing issues 🙂
Light coats like that, it may have been 5-7 coats total but that glove thing wasn't going to be hidden that way.
@@MrTheHillfolk solid advice!
bruh! that's super nice!
Awesome video
Nice video, great instructions. The drive looks fabulous, really pops! Mahalo for sharing. : )
Thanks man, I always loved your comments and appreciate your support and feedback. 😄🤘
First of all if your painting using just clear coat you MUST lightly scuff using either 800grit up to 1000grit which gives the clear a surface to bond to.
I really want to try this on my Weld wheels on my race car. I don’t want to ruin expensive wheels though
When you've got skills, who needs a piece of tape and a pen to distinguish between two identical things ;)
Lol! Right....just paint that shit nice 😄
You are awesome
Love that color Eric. Other than a possible clear coat on top, would you give it a clear undercoat to give a more predictable surface to paint on?
Allowing the paint to get to the tack stage before applying the next coat...
Are there any transparent paints in a spray can that you would recommend to give shiny metal an anodized colored look instead of a painted look? That Duplicolor Metalcast is really limited in colors and I also don't know if there may be a better product out there with regards to giving metal an tinted color look instead of a spray painted look. Thanks.
I've only ever tried this, but I'm sure there's other options out there, try Google
Tom Wolfe approves.
Hi Eric. Do you have any videos showing how you made/bought/setup your spray booth? Also, ever considered inventing a paint can shaker? Regards
Yes, the link for the spray paint booth should be in the video itself in the top right hand corner, or search my me and foamcore spray booth
I differentiate items with coloured duct tape.
😀
How do u paint transparently?
Like if i make a metal swirl pattern, and i wanted the swirl pattern painted but still be able to see the pattern for the "burst" effect, what would be the best method?
Use a stranslucen paint
I wonder if the paint issues could have anything to do with the aluminum possibly being clear anodized?
Yes Yes, possibly. I think an adhesion promoter would have been a good thing to use as well.
Can this be used on a stone vases?
I don't see why not give it a try
Is there a clear coat that you would recommend that really protects well against scratches and chipping?
I would suggest 2K clear coat. This is automotive grade and you can get it in a spray can. This stuff has Isocyanates and can be very bad for your health. So wear a respirator. Here is a link to the stuff I use... www.amazon.com/SprayMax-Glamour-Gloss-Aerosol-Clear/dp/B0082LJMC6/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=2k+clear&qid=1579133347&sr=8-4
Always make sure all your painting materials are compatible.
Suedzville Would this clear coat product work well over plastic?
@@warnermcgee8856 Depends on the desire result. if you are painting the plastic, i would scuff the plastic, apply an adhesion promoter, prime, paint, and the clear coat. Stick with one brand and type of paint if you can. If not, test to make sure all each part is compatible.
I would suggest one that is with in the family of products that you are using to paint the part with to ensure maximum compatibility and reduce the chance for problems
@@EricStrebel Thank you very much!
In addition to props, weapons and armor I make a lot of custom action figures. I'm still trying to find the best sealant possible to help prevent paint from scraping, chipping and flaking off when the joints and other moving parts come into contact with each other.
Is the item you're painting aluminium?
Sand blasted extruded aluminum part, yes
hit subscribe as sooon as you mention being product designer.
I hope you enjoy the content
a matt silver doesn't really pop with this paint
Do u use clear coat once done
You could, In this case I do not
@Ondrene Barnes >Candy paints are made of an inter-mix clear. This allows more coats to be added instead of a common base/clear used on you car.
The main difference is it is tinted with petroleum base color, so it looks “See-Thru”. The added, the darker it gets. A lite scuffing of Red “Scotch-Brite” would give a tooth to grab onto, professional wax & grease remover, wipe-all lint free paper towel for auto use and dry. Base coat can be silver, let dry. Color candy should not be rushed as “Lite coats” are fight, let dry. Add coat #2 even with 80% over-lap to 60% so no streaks. Remember, the more you add, the darker it gets. Once dry, a protect layer of clear can be used, but spray test piece at the same time. Clears will change color and some have yellow hue. The Clear has “UV” protection added to it. Petroleum based colors are mixed with stabilizers under heat & mixed to remain stable in dark, cool can for years, called toners. Hope this helps!
Happy 2021!
what color is this i am color impaired
Orange candy, it should be listed in the description
Base coat chips off too easily, no matter the prep
