Thank you again for doing these kinds of test you have saved myself and many other viewers time and money. I can't wait for the candy and gun-bush videos.
Thanks alot Robert for yet another honest, straightforward review. You are the paint Guru. Your reviews, testing, and honest commentary are an invaluable resource for me, and others, I'm sure.
We finally get to "see" you in that Revell Chrome spray. I remember my disappointment in the Model Masters spray chrome (spent my whole allowance on a can of that) when I was a kid, thirty years ago, we've come a long way since then huh?
When it comes to the Krylon foils. I have had the best luck and the best finish, after spraying with a gloss black. While the black is wet, I cover with the foil paint. The foil paint cures with the black and makes the paint more durable for handling. The drawback here is, you gotta come correct on both! Your black base has to be perfect as well as your foil layer.
Great video Robert. I'm curious how each of these would hold up with a good candy and/or clear coat applied over the top. I know that usually makes for a perfect disaster with most of these paints, but I'm always hopeful that some day we'll find that secret sauce that gives the perfect chrome, and colored chrome, glossy look without ruining the piece! R.I.P. to the Pledge Clear Gloss floor polish. ✌️😎
I.m into powdercoating as hobby and mix the same pigments as DYC in my clear powder....... It works.......next for me is airbrush and i have to say Robert every vid gives me good tips. Glad i found your channel and didn t skip to quick.
Happy to have found this video. I'm new to airbrushing, and my first attempt is likely going to be using some decanted Krylon cans. I've been trying to determine what was an appropriate thinner to use and how much. You've given me some good ideas. You also make the decanting process much simplier. Originally I was going to puncture the cans and decant them entirely. But now I see that's not neccessary.
I've used Krylon on many outdoor train models & never had a problem on the modeling plastic used. Train cars made by Bachmann. I also used Krylon on delrin plastic train car trucks, has held up very well over the years. Note: I overspray a UV resistant clear coat to fight sunlight degradation on my outdoor train stuff. I've had very good luck over the years with Krylon on anything around the house. Even used it to affix inkjet dyes on home made decals. This finish is found in art supply stores, same as used on portrait paintings. I use the same Grex model as in the video.
Great video! I can’t wait to see your upcoming candy color video. After watching your Tamiya candy color video several months ago I recently got the courage to try my own candy apple red on a Camaro. I think it’s my best paint job to date.
Great video! It's quite interesting to see how those spray can paints look when they are airbrushed. And that revel chrome is a pleasant surprise (although expensive one). One thing though, i'm not sure you get much more paint from can than from the bottle (for example alclad) because a lot of that liquid you feel as weight in the can is actually propellant (propane i think in most cases), so the total amount of actual color liquid could be roughly the same. But still, getting that chrome look is worth paying a bit extra. Keep doing great videos like this!
Enjoyed and appreciate the testing done here. As a general tip for knowing how your paints are actually going to look the second time you reach for a can (or hobby bottle), the first time I use one I always make a point of also spraying the cap.
I love the rabbit hole your channel has become! It's exactly these "deep thoughts" and "what if" evaluations you do. Admit it people, we all wonder about these things that "Barbatos Rex" does. Also, vapors not fumes. Yes, I'm that guy and maybe used to be an OSHA guy 😉
Lexan is a brand name for a polycarbonate, plexiglass is the name often used in the US and Perspex is also often used, especially outside the US. Great testing and super-useful information, as always.
Interesting results. I do like all the copper tones for simply copper. Now I want to try this with Dupli-Color Chrome, which I know right out of the can gives a great "Ceramic Chrome" finish like one would find on car headers.
Great test! I'm surprised you didn't try the Krylon or Rustoleum Mirror effect. It's expensive and comes in a small can, but it supposed to go on glass and you back it with black paint. I had a mirror commission and it worked great, but I had tried a number of other chromes before I got it and the others all just looked silver. I'll have to do a regular test to check it out, because the mirror was supposed to have an old distressed look.
I actually bought the Montana Gold Chrome myself. I gotta say mine did not turn out dull like yours. Mine was a proper mirror finish. So much so i was really shocked with how good it was. Im not sure why yours didnt turn out like mine...🤔
This is a really interesting topic❤ It always drove me bonkers that even dollar store kids toys would have that cool chrome look, but it was a nightmare to find a paint that could look 1/2 as good as a dollar toy.
What size needles were you using in the airbrushes? Could the size needle affect the appearance of the paints? Another great video for comparisons. Thank you.
That Revell was clutch, as expected. Overall I was sure that at least half of the non hobby cans were gonna be duds in the mirror like department. Another great video boss.👍🏼 Also happy belated Father's Day to all the dads out there!
You are right on with your appraisal of testors chrome. My first experience with Chrome paint was the testors spray back in the mid 80s. It was terrible then and I guess it hasn't changed. That revell is spectacular for spray can chrome. I agree krylon needs to change their caps. Nice looking paint but definitely not chrome.
Awesome video as always Robert! I use that Revell Chrome and it is awesome! Im going to try out that spaz stix out. Just ordered the 2k clear a couple days ago, cant wait to try it out!
Those Krylon Foil Metallics are really nice. I used Alclad Copper on a part recently and was so disappointed (weirdly brown and not very metal-looking) with the way it looked that I gave it a spray with a can of Foil Metallic Copper and it looked significantly better.
The best chrome spray paint I have found is called ironlak at hobby lobby (it’s on the isle with oil paints for artist it comes out wall close to the cap. 6 bucks a can. It I found if I touched befor a couple days of curing the skin oils would mess it up and any clear coat I tried dulled it to a silver
I've decanted something before... can't remember why. I think i needed more control, like a touch up on a car? Whatever the reason = too much hassle for me to do it! The Montana colors looked good. I'd get those for a project.
Thanks for the test. I tried Iron Lak (spelling ?) spray chrome a couple years ago and had about the same results as you got with the Gold brand chrome, nice bright silver but Not chrome. If you want a fan cap airbrush for clears and candies, Check out the GSI Creos P-290 and Spraygunner has an adapter to us professional spray gun PPS cups with it.

I sort of did. I just released a polished alloy paint that sold out in 10 minutes. It comes back in stock this week. I did a video on it a month ago. Check it out. It's pretty much chrome, just more durable
Best chrome paint I saw was a motor cycle restoration I’ll have to review it to find the name of paint they sprayed final product over a black base sprayed first excellent results
What might happen if you spray a few coats for thicker finish and then polish it with car 3 stage polishes and a good buffer . like for a car or a guitar body.
Sorry buddy. The manufacturer sends me the paints and I get them to Gundam Pros. Maybe I can sell them to you directly. Send me an email with what you want and your address, I'll see if can ship them myself

I wonder if those Montana Gold paints you got could be a bad batch - I accidentally found somebody else using them ("How To Paint 3D Prints - Gold Chrome Effect" by Groundeffected) and it looks sooo much shinier in their video, really wanna try them myself.
Problem I used Montana Gold last week at work and it never fully dried. Two days later and it would pick up fingerprints. when I read the can it warns you of thists.
I wonder if the solvent is degrading the plastic, so that the surface of the spoons and plates become roughened even though it may feel smooth to the touch on the paint surface. That may be why a shine can not be achieved. Did you try on metal , glass, or a different plastic?
If you're planning on eventually decanting the entire spray can, couldn't you turn the can upside down and hold the trigger until all of the propellant is discharged, then puncture the spray can and pour out the contents?
That’s false advertising making the consumer think they are getting the mirror chrome on the cap but getting a metallic silver or gold instead. Bait & Switch. Very glad to see you decant the Revell Chrome. At $35 gotta stretch it as far as possible.
