This is exactly what I've been looking for, and exactly what Duplicolor should have made as a demo for their products! You clearly and concisely demonstrated the colors and their application, and allowed time to view each shade in the "real world" light of day. I would not be surprised if the sales of their products have increased substantially since this video was released (especially for the purple Metalcast!) I have used the Metalcast Red on my 2006 Mustang GT calipers, and the achieved look is just as stunning as you showed here in the video. Many thanks for this great content, I've subscribed to see what other great info you have to share!
Amigo thanks very much! Yes this video came to be because I personally only found one or two videos helpful for only one or two of the colours out there. But yes surely I have helped their sales 😂 thanks again for the support mate. Yes, I have some exciting plans ahead and can't wait to show them
This is the video I came to to make my purchase decision. And I’m doing an entire build with this exact product. Their entire line actually
Glad my video could be of help mate
dupli color should pay u for this video
Hahahah much appreciated mate. Yeah I think their product sales have gone up a little bit since this video 😜
Why? Because he filmed the most important part. THE PAINTING. Lol.
Great video, exactly what I was looking for.
Awesome mate, glad to hear it! Cheers
Thanks for the video. Cheers from Northern California.
No dramas mate! Cheers for dropping a line
The video we all needed. I appreciate it!
Hahahah thanks mate, yes I certainly felt I needed to know how these colours look in real life so that's how this video came to be since at time of my recording I couldn't find a video showing everything! 😜
Very helpful review. Thank you.
Awesome thankyou!
Thank you very much. You have helped me greatly with my project .
Great news I'm glad to hear it
This is exactly what I was looking for, good sharp video in good light. Cheers.
Cheers mate, glad it could be of help for you! 👊
Not seen this paint before, and looks vreat, especially the blue.
Absolutely mate. Unfortunately on clearance now due to American supply issues
Great presentation video.
Much appreciated mate. Thanks for leaving your comment.
got the purple for a keyboard recently, thanks to this video. it actually looks SO good
Mate I'm so glad to hear I could help with your colour choice! Such a nice colour the purple hey!!
I was thinking this *exact same thing* do you have any pictures?? Will you keep me posted?
What keyboard and did you have to remove the previous anodize to re anodize?
@@mrfishboiii1217 it was a keychron k2. YeAh I just sanded it down
Great video! I was debating on different types of hest resistant caliper paint, thanks this helped me decide to go with metalcast red 🍒
Glad I could help!
Thanks for your video 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼because of it I am going to spend the extra money and get “DUPLICOLOR” brand to paint my truck calipers.
Ay you're welcome mate
Glad to hear the video could help with your decision making
Great video, thanks. I've seen what it looks like on raw cast aluminum, and even that looks good.
That's epic, thanks for letting us know mate. Cheers for leaving a comment!
I like the highly polished surface with a a even solid light coat. Gives the color extra shine. Like colored chrome
That's awesome mate I'll have to give it a try myself
Highly polished surface?
Should work well for any high shine/silver/reflective base subject.
@@MasonSkylinespray it over polished steel polished aluminum or even chrome and it looks AMAZING!!! The shinier the metal you are painting it the more this paint pops
A few years back I used the red on bare high grain wood then epoxy over it... its for the wood trim on my rx7. No base coat
Must have turned out great?
This was a very helpful, informative video. Thank you for making it! Charming accent, as well!😊
Superglad my video could be of help and a massive thanks for leaving a comment on this video really helps me out. 🥰 charming accent- compliment of the Century cheers Queen!
For real, this video is way better than the vidoes from Dupli-Color! (and they don't have the accent!). I love that you sprayed actual samples. Super helpful. I want to give a vintage light fixture a fresh new vibe, now I'm torn between the blue and that gorgeous purple! You have saved me time and money! Thank you✌️
The videos that they had made certainly inspired this one to come into existence to show the colors and a little bit more reality and range. Your project sounds so awesome please send me a photo on the Ford Merc Guy Instagram page when you are done. Yes the purple and blue so amazing.
I will absolutely send pics of my light fixture when I get it done. Spray painting stuff is fun! I look forward to more videos.😁
Very fun and very satisfying! Looking forward to seeing your finished products.
Do you have any video suggestions that you'd like to see done?
Great vid, very informative. I'll be using this on a project guitar, deciding between the blue and purple. (edit or combining coats of the blue and green to get aqua?)
Thanks for the comparison, really provides actual usable info.
Cheers!
Cheers mate glad I could help, I did a combination of the yellow and the orange and it turned out really nice so feel free to get the green and blue and do a bit of a test on something to see how it turns out I think it would look really awesome on a guitar
I'm wanting to use something like this for a guitar too. Hope it works well.
Let us know how you go mate!
Great video, I'm curious to know how these paint finishes holds up on the calipers, especially when exposed to heat cycles and soot. As well as washing or cleaning out dirt
Likewise.
I have a few customers I've helped with Caliper paintings through my business. I'll have to check in periodically and see how they fair.
I also plan on using four colours on my for calipers on my van and maybe that way I can report from personal experience longevity
I did my girls cadillac around 7 months ago and it's been washed many times and has held up pretty well
Thanks brother very useful

So for already painted brake calipers, do you suggest still sanding down the caliper, put on a layer of primer, next the silver, then the color of choice? Or should I just skip the primer?
Hi mate, depending on the primer I guess. Some primer is designed for priming previously (roughened sanded) painted areas, some primer for bare metal. Unfortunately I don't have a specific answer for previously painted Calipers re primer. But perhaps if you get a primer surfacer that's designed for previously painted areas. Or hope that sanded previous paint and new paint bond together well VS new primer sticking to the old sanded paint.
these look amazing,I wonder how it would look on a black and machined rim?
Yeah they pop mate! Would be interesting for sure!
Will this work on Aluminum? And will I need to put a primer down before applying the base coat?
Would you recommend a clear-coat after to protect it?
Thanks!
Hi mate, as always with painting primer is always going to promote adhesion so you might get a longer lasting results and technically the colour codes is a tinted clear butt putting a clear coat over the top would give more protection absolutely
I have an aluminum chromed tow hook that I want to paint. Chrome looks good, but my car is silver so it doesn’t match that much. I saw another version of this paint that is darker than the silver one that you show on the video. Would that make the tow hook darker without removing the gloss?
Yes I've been curious to try that darker silver base coat as well it should come out glossy just like the other colour ones do. If you don't like it use thinners before the paint dries and it will wipe off
hmmm. That blue looks very similar to BMW M callipers, but with a little more pop.
Closest match to OEM is Estoril Blue II, but I think I'll give this a go on my next calliper respray.
Yes mate a very close blue I'd agree!
I plan on using the metal cast red on a valve cover. Would you recommend using primer or do you think the silver base with the red over it will be okay?
I'd personally use a high heat primer myself for the best longevity chance
Your video is the reason why I’m buying this paint Dupli color owes u😂
Hahaha hopefully they sponsor us 😁
Cheers mate
Id love to see the orange candy
I painted one of my calipers in the orange. Here's a post on my buisness page: ➡️ instagram.com/p/CzhwN6gP4Vg/?igsh=MTZtd2dvNXU3eXZvcg==
In person, do you think the base coat alone, looks like polished aluminum or steel? The more I review the colors, the more I like the "bare metal" look of the base coat; putting a few layers of gloss clear coat for depth, may be the "carved aluminum block" look? thanks!
The silver basecoat is a very bright hi metallic silver, they also have a dark grey top coat in the metal cast colour range which I forgot about and forgot to use in this video. It might give a slightly tinted look over the hi metallic silver which might help you with your goal
@@FordMercGuy good point, I forgot about the smoke grey color! Going to test the base coat silver with gloss clear coat first. If that looks good, I'll use that. If not, then maybe the smoke chrome, purple, blue, and blue+green for aqua.
Probably best to test all to see what I like best before doing the guitar and changing my mind afterwards! lol
Cheers!
personally, the metalcast red, blue and green over a gold metallic base coat turns out the best.
We'll have to try it out mate do you have any photos of the finished results send some my way on the Ford Merc guy on Instagram
I have some silver hub caps I want to paint because they aren't chrome like I wanted, should I go ahead and still use the base coat? Looks pretty similar the silver color they are already, just curious if it has any reflective properties or anything that make the anodized look better.
The base coat metallic silver I find is VERY metallic, very high amounts of reflective sparkle. So it may just reflect a brighter colour in direct sunlight. The brighter the silver underneath the brighter the top colour coat will show
@@FordMercGuy Perfect, thanks. Might even turn the blue on my ford emblems anodized red to match. 👍
Sickk show me the results, send to my instagram @FordMercGuy
@@FordMercGuy Will do, finishing up wrapping some interior trim and exterior pillars of my 2010 Fusion with a holographic carbon fiber and that's my next project. Also just finished doing a Bio Hex+ wrap on my headlights, 10/10 recommend but its a tough film to work with. I'll show you that too, it's awesome and I'm doing pretty good for my first time wrapping.
Hey epic work mate!! You sound very handy yourself. I've been meaning to practice my wrapping skills too!
Thank for the video , work on plastic body with a primer or plastic primer , If the plastic bodysuit is a little soft? UV resistant? need to add protector/clear for sun/rain etc? (Golf cart project)
Hi mate.
Cheers
I have used a duplicolour product that is a high temperature primer, So that could be an option that matches high temp properties of the main colour cans above.
Otherwise typically yes plastic primer helps with adhesion. Clear coat can be extra UV protection for sure. Make sure the clear you use is enamel based to match the enamel paints these duplicolour Annodized range is.
Much appreciate this content!
No dramas mate! Thanks for your comment
👍
🙌
Thank you for this video! So the two caliper paints you used sprayed on dull without the use of clear coat ? You said you sprayed clear over the red but didn’t mention if you sprayed clear over the yellow ?
I think it was because I was painting the cardboard squares and the paint was soaking into the cardboard and drying matte. Painted gloss red caliper paint for example on calipers in the past they are glossy finish but clearcoat definitely makes them shine more and certainly long-lasting shine because the brake dust doesn't stick to the clear coat as easily as it does stick.to the colour base coat only. Brake calipers that don't have to go on top overtime colorcote looks a bit more dull Faded
@@FordMercGuy okay thanks alot for replying ! Yes that’s what I believe my past experience using red caliper paint ended up with a shine and I’ve never clear coated them. I will consider doing the base cost clear coat process next time 😄
No dramas mate! Have fun
Is that silver coat used as the primer or is it necessary to do a high heat primer before the siver base coat?
High heat primer would likely give best longevity underneath for the top cost high heat paint to stick.
QUESTION: Do you think it's possible to layer the metalcast purple and red to make a burgundy? I'm looking to re-create the color of the Washington Commanders helmets.
It's worth a try mate give me a message on Instagram at Ford Merc Guy and I can try and squeeze in sometime to test paint something and show you how it looks
@@FordMercGuy will do. Thanks for the response!
No dramas mate
dumb question but when painting a non-chrome surface, would you have to sand and primer before the metallic base coat, or do you just simply spray it over whatever you’re painting, thanks for any info.
No dumb questions here mate we're all here to learn. Perhaps depends on the application but generally for longest lasting paint sticks to primer best
@@FordMercGuythank you, appreciate the help 🙏
You should try a gloss black base coat for them and try a gold base coat for the red.
Ah yes, you have me thinking now. Would be interesting tests.
This range of top coats is put of stock in Australia but I do have most of these colours except the red still in stock. So I could do some of the black base coat tests for you
That green looks more teal. Is that my phone or is it actually teal looking? If so I love it!
Yeah mate, it certainly does look very teal on direct sunlight. In darker lighting it presents as a darker green. So awesome though!
If I use the base primer will it work on a ceramic vase?
If the primer can stick to ceramic.. Then you shouldn't have adhesion issues. Usually primer sticks to a roughened surface best.
Is it necessary to apply the basecoat of this before use, or can i just apply over primer? I am considering the blue. To me it looks amazing. Looking to paint my car soon. Thank you for the information!
The top colour coat is like a tinted colour to go over a bright base. So a chrome of a high silver base for best results. For example, painting over a dark base.. Final colour look will be dark only.
@FordMercGuy awesome. So if I want the brighter look, (like the look in your video) of the blue cardboard square, how & what do you recommend before I apply the blue, this is after the primer is laid down.
The lightest brightest metallic silver or chrome paint will work well mate.
Hey buddy, can you lightly sand the silver base coat to give it a brushed aluminum look before applying a top coat?
Hey legend perhaps if you lay down and other players they will be enough depth of pain to send off the glossy aspect of the metallic finished might be worth a try on a test panel to see how it comes up
@@FordMercGuy Thank you my friend, I'll give it a try.. This guy did a nice job ua-cam.com/video/gG96KzlrhYg/v-deo.html
Let us know how you go mate
Just curious - What do the anodized colours look like without the metallic base coat?
Good question mate. Best analogy I could think of is a see-through cellophane analogy and the more layers that you stack on top of it self the dark the colour gets. On its own it is a translucent tinted clear
Hi buddy, great vid. One question, do you think 1 of each cans (base, color, clear coat) is enough to paint all brake callipers? (Audi A6) thanks ✌️
Hey mate, no dramas. Get two of the base and colour ones just to be safe. Return what you don't use 👊👊
Thank you for quick answer 👊
No worries amigo
Do you clear coat over this I used the purple on my bmx frame and I’m waiting the 7 days for it to cure just didn’t know if I’ll need to clear coat over and if so what kind should I use I bought the rustoleom brand clear coat already
Metalcast is a durable enamel finish that is oil, gas, and heat resistant up to 500°F intermittently as per online search. So You could use a high temperature enamel clear to help protect the finish mate
On the bronze, did you use the silver base coat?
Yes, used the silver base coat for all of them
So do you use a clearcoat over top of this paint? I'm thinking of doing some wheels
Clear coat will definitely help the paint last alot longer!
@@FordMercGuy Sweet, appreciate the reply :) out of curiosity, if you used a gunmetal grey or black coat underneath these colours, instead of the metalic silver, would it give a darker effect?
Correct. You may almost struggle to get much colour showing ontop as these are a very light colour coat. Which would show up over a light/chrome base.. A darker base you'd struggle to have much colour showing up ontop. Worth a test though on a test peice.
Hi, can you combine 2 colours like the blue and red?
Hi yes, it just means the colour mixes just like any paint. I actually tried the yellow and the orange together to get a "gold" colour for brake Calipers for a customer of mine. Actually came up well. Will be hard to touch up though of scratched one day because it is a custom mix.
Question, do u have to put primer on before applying, that metal cast anodized base coating, on bare metal, or does it act like a primer?
A high heat primer would probably best suit underneath.
These are all base/top coat acting.
@@FordMercGuy thanks a lot brother man!👍
No dramas legend! 👊👊 happy painting
Did you ever end up posting a how to video? I looked and didn't see one. Thanks for sharing 😊
Hi I haven't made a how to video just yet. Did you want how to for painting brake Calipers?
@@FordMercGuy In this video you mentioned making a future video about how to paint calipers. If you decide to make one it would be great to see. 😄 Thanks again for this amazing caliper pain video! This was so well done and so helpful!
I just went out today and bought the Duplicolor Metal cast base and red colors, along with an engine close clear coat from Duplicolor.
I won't be painting my calipers for another month or so, but looking forward to it :)
Your videos are so well done with great attention to detail. Thanks again for sharing!
will those paints handle the high temps of the brake calipers ?
Hi mate, these paints are a high temperature rated. I'd spray clear coat also in high temperature for protection against brake dust and paint chipping
@@FordMercGuy thanks
I want to try this on carbon fiber but im not sure how it’s gonna look like I want a tint on it so I guess im gonna have to do some experimenting
Spray it see how it looks. If you don't like the look - Before it fully dries.. Thinners will remove it easy
Can you use the on model cars? If it went on cards....I would think so?
Paint can go onto just about anything. The question is will the paint stick.
Rough surfaces paint can stick best. Use a suitable primer layer of paint first for best adhesion.
Hi, I bought some anodized aluminum parts for my project (flight sim pit). Problem is, I got silver when I should have bought black. Too late to send them back. Can I use a can of this to change the silver to black ?
Hi mate, these paints are translucent so eventually with enough costs, the base colour gets darker and darker. They do make a dark silver Annodized finish can (which I hadn't purchased and tried in this series) maybe that one would be worth a try.
@@FordMercGuy Ok, I guess what I'm wondering is, can I use the black can of this to cover the silver aluminum profile directly or is it more complicated than that? Thanks
Ah I'm with you now. It should work. These colour costs are designed for chrome, otherwise the metallic base coat gives dark colours the light silver/metallic needed to give the translucency through the base coat colour. Your silver aluminium base you can test.. Spray a little of your Annodized colour spray in the lid.. And brush on and see how it results
@@FordMercGuy Thanks mate, I'll do a test.
Are you supposed to let the base coat dry before adding the tint? The instructions on the cans are vague af. The silver looked great but then i tried to add the blue and it looked like crap. Idk if i got a bad can of paint or if it was something i did
Maybe you went too heavy with the blue tint on top? Oh there was some kind of paint reaction. Do you have photos feel free to send it through on the Ford guy Instagram page
I am doing some roadbike parts. Should i throw a clear over the paint or does does it come with clear mixed in?
Technically it is a tinted clear.. But for longest lasting/anti chip, I'd put a 2k clear over the top 👌
@@FordMercGuy next question, I cannot find the base coat locally. Also is the metal cast base coat and ground coat the same thing?
Any high temperature silver metallic would be as close to their base/ground coat yes.
@@FordMercGuy thanks
All good mate
so do u spray clear over it after or no?
Hey mate, clear will always protect any paint underneath last much longer from wear and tear.
They are high temperature paints so as is have a good chance of longevity.
GREEN!
So good ay mate
What your trick to mask the brake pad neatly and the rubber bits? Also could you make a tutorial step by step painting the calipers? Thanks
Hi mate, always tricky taping up the pad but a sharp Stanley knife does well cutting excess tape around the borders of the backing of the pad. Just a steady hand and lots of patience.
Also is that a typo mate? You're a get a step by step "braking" a pad?
@@FordMercGuy thanks for replying so quickly! Yea thought it might have been a Stanley blade involved! Yes it was a typo though ive fixed it now lol
No dramas mate, and sure thing I can add it on my to-do list for a UA-cam video for you!
Would you like a special mention in the video? That you're requested the calipers painting tutorial?
@@FordMercGuy that would be amazing mate and yea il take a shoutout haha :) thanks very much
The colour name you're looking for is called "burnt orange" sama ;)
Yess sounds the goods 😁😜
What you use for the purple before u spray it?? Did u say black
Hi mate I used the silver metalcast base coat as per can manufacturer recommendations. The purple came out awesome hey
@@FordMercGuy yes came out awesome. Thank you for replying back
No dramas mate, thanks for watching!
Wouldn’t recommend it for gas tank on a bike would you?
They are a high-temperature paint.. I wouldn't imagine that gas tank itself gets very hot anyway to challenge the adhesion of the paint. Might be worth a try, can always thinners it off if no good.
What's drying time like?
Like normal non high temp paints mate. On the can from memory had touch dry in 1 hour and can be handled in 3 hours.
what about black as a base coat for these????
The colour wouldn't be visible. Unless many many coats
Do these Metalcast take heat well ????
They seem to be pretty good at least in my own experience I've done a few customer jobs and about six months ago have done the orange one on my own work van and so far so good on my own van I did use high heat primer underneath and high temperature clear coat on top
@@FordMercGuy
I was actually thinking of putting some color on my “Heat shields” of my Rocket 3R Motorcycle, the High Temp primer sounds like I good idea. 👍
How would this look on a engine block
Hi mate, would be interesting to see. Feel free to try DIY. If you don't like it, use thinners soon after spraying and the paint will come off easily. Glove up!
I wonder how the paint looks with flakes and a clear coat
I'm sure it would look really nice

The purple is beautiful, glad my video could help out with the colour choice. When you are done with your project and send through a photo to the Ford Merc guy instagram
what method do you use say if you want to mix colors? one coat of color , then second coat of the second color?
That's it mate I combined the yellow and the orange to try and make a bit of a mix. It came out pretty well
@@FordMercGuy legend! wasnt expecting such a fast reply. so basically one coat aftet another, im gonna try blue and green
Yeah mate no dramas, see how they turn out. Send me a photo on instagram @fordmercguy let's see 👊
How durable is it?
Tough to say mate. If you put a 2k clear over the top, good primer underneath. Best chances of longevity.
Depends if its in a direct sunlight exposure application, brake Calipers have other heat cycles and brake dust/rain/car washing challenges, etc
I have a weird and dumb question is it possible to paint a whole car with this stuff
Anything is possible 😜 perhaps putting clear coat over the top for longevity would be a really good idea.
What if it's sprayed over a flat color base?
Likely the top finish won't be as bright.
@@FordMercGuy So, if I'm wanting to use this on plastic, you believe it's best to first coat it with a silver "chrome" base to get the most out of it?
Yes mate. For best final finish in translucency/Annodized finish look, use the base silver coat in this range first before your chosen top coat colour. Think of the main colour range as a tint do give colour to the chrome/silver base.
Another Example.. If you had a dark grey/black base then painted the colour top coat .. You wouldn't see much of the colour shine through
Can I put 2k clear on it
You could mate certainly would protect the finish. Perhaps not necessary unless what you're painting is high touch area or in the sun alot.
Does anyone know how this works on wood?
If the wood is lighter colour the colour of the metalcast paint would show up brighter I'd say. I wonder how well the bond to wood, would be.
It would be the black anodized metalcaset color
Yes wish I'd tried that before that brand stopped coming to Australia
We're can i buy it any links 😅?
In Australia no longer something that can be found easily due to supply issues. But try the Google search for this duplicolour metal cast range and click the "shopping" option. See if any luck there
Where can I find the black carbon fiber
Hi mate, not sure which one you're referring to
@@FordMercGuy the black one
Hi mate it was just a generic black for reference against the other colours nearby
If I spray a color over carbon fiber, will I see the carbon fiber pattern through the color?
I'm not sure mate I haven't tried it personally. If you end up getting a can and giving it the try you can use wax and grease remover to remove the paint before it dries
my understanding is metalcast is supposed to be a tinted clear coat, letting the underlying finish come through. that's why they recommend the silver metallic base coat if you're not doing it on chrome or polished aluminum.
note, not speaking from experience, only from my research. I plan to use this on a guitar project. Hoping the anodized look makes the guitar look like it's made of metal
I imagine it won't have a high reflective shine popping through because the silver parts of a carbon fibre look arent that high in shine
could i spray paint a whole coupe car with these cans
Howdy mate, technically you could.. It depends on your goal. I probably wouldn't advise painting a whole car with these cans, it would cost alot. Lots of canned primer would be needed, lots of the silver base coat, lots of the colour cost, and also a good 2K clear coat cans to protect. And then.. Who knows how long it would last.
@@FordMercGuy oh yeah how many cans of primer would i need then also with the silver base coat would i just use any silver or grey spray paint i seen a guy use 11 cans to spray his whole car and it came out looking pretty good
I've used spray cans to spray a bootlid and a roof before.. Many cans will give a better finish but I'd still say wouldn't be the longest lasting , but bro worth the attempt and experience! You could always go panel by panel, no need to rush the whole car.
Stuff looks awesome on hot wheels cars 👍😂
I've seen google images of painted hotwheels cars. So good!!
Well look at that...the green i thought was green isnt the green i want...bruh does anyone know of a spray thats emerald green? I wanna spray my k24 valve cover....
Perhaps bro, if you can either find the paint code for the emerald green job want, specialist paint stores can custom mix for you. Or again at a specialist paint store they may have databases and find a green you're happy with and mix into a can for you.
I've done similar before
The ionized colors are meant to use on chrome not solid surfaces😱
Correct! Although duplicolour makes the silver base coat (bright metallic) to imitate as much of a suitable base next to chrome
Someone paint a car with the red
I wonder how it turned out!!
The purple is disappointing
What were you hoping for brother
