  • After the latest reports and WWDC24, I think it’s time to ask, What’s Up with the Apple Vision Pro? The newest report from The Information, claims Apple has 'suspended' work on the next Vision Pro and is instead focusing on releasing a cheaper model in 2025. Did visionOS 2 do enough? What direction are they going in? And where should they take it?

Personal theater. I don’t have room for a tv or able to watch at a volume to really experience a movie. Visionpro solved those issues for me. Wish it is 1/2 the weight and price. Still hurting from the purchase but the video quality of movies and some dedicated contents is stinking amazing.

I’ve told quite a few people and shut a couple more up by simply pointing out that people shell out much more for televisions which have much smaller effective screen sizes…and aren’t portable.
Of course, dedicated TV’s have other advantages but then, so does the AVP.

@@westmcgee9320You can buy a decent big screen tv for under $1k. Which can watch while doing other things, with other people, and not wearing a goofy headset. Ridiculous comparison.

I love the AVP and use it almost every day. I rigged it with a halo headstrap so it’s totally comfortable now, as I couldn’t wear it with the straps Apple provided. Love it for immersive movie and entertainment experiences. And with the halo headstrap, I’m able to take off the light seal for augmented reality applications, and the AVP just floats in front of my eyes like a pair of glasses. That way I have all my peripheral vision. It’s such an amazing product, can’t wait for the next iterations.
I’m also really looking forward to the extended Mac display for work situations, video production, etc.

yes. definitely. but the iPhone 15 pro isn't even powerful enough to use for Vision Pro processing. not even close. even the battery in the biggest iPhone isn't enough to run Vision Pro for like an hour. not a good idea. I'm in Singapore and most of us live in tiny apartments/flats with limited living space. I think it will sell very well in Asia considering our population density and overall smaller home sizes as compared to the US. Rather than spending thousands of dollars on renovations to maximise space or getting multiple monitors, a single AVP headset virtually extends our computing needs way beyond physical boundaries. Really look forward to the cheaper model when it comes out and I believe it will release much sooner than expected.

Or you can get a PC for around $1000, Two Quest 3's for another $1,200, Accessories for maybe another $300. That's $2,500 so you can get a good 1440p Monitor for around $300. With the remaining $200 you can either buy experiences, games or whatever in the Meta OS. Or maybe that $200 goes to your desk setup to improve it and you just pirate all the games you want on the Quest lol. Or you can get the AVP that has a fraction of the things you can do on the Quest and hope they do more to the Apple Vision Ecosystem.

Price is NOT the #1 problem of the Vision Pro.
The problem is that most people (aka average consumers) STILL don't see utility in using a AR/VR headset. It can cost $1,000 and it STILL would be collecting dust in people's closets after 1 or 2 months.

    • @Aggie4life77

Nah, at that price which would put it in the range of an iPad Pro, people would buy this instead of an iPad if they have a phone and Mac. Also, you shouldn’t look at it as a phone where you use it daily. This will be more of a weekly device meaning you will use it a couple times a week. Obviously the weight /comfort is a big issue for many. I can't highly recommend enough to buy an adapter that allows for a trop solo strap knit to help with weight. Game changer.

It is a very niche product with limited applicability to the majority of consumers and like 3-D TV's it is a hard sell to ask people to wear a heavy headset for hours to consume content. I think something that people forget is Apple needs to incentivise Developers, currently they take a lot and expect a lot. If they offered a better payout option to developers and studios to work on a Vision Pro Applications in the mid term, it’s opportunity for the product to shine becomes greater. People need to see value in any product and if they are only getting a spec sheet as the reason why, It’s not enough and the price point is scary without a realistic reason to use it daily.
They need to show people a daily use and make it like you said, comfort to wear for longer periods of time.

I keep hearing plenty of people excited when they get it (VP or other VT headset) and after a bit of usage over a couple days or weeks or even months, before long they just kinda wander away and need come back. I am absolutely hoping to get the cheaper model of the Vision Pro when it comes out. I'd like to see it made with more light-weight materials as well.
I also want a bit more focus from Apple on the VR side of things -- I'd like to see them partner with Sony to use the sony VR2 controllers and have access to Sony's VR2 games, and maybe offer some benefits to Sony in return.. that would be a good partnership, especially since they both have eye tracking. The tough part for Sony's VR2 has been building a big enough market to entice developers to actually make games for it, so I could see this working!
But, I also think the further development of Sports apps and maybe a Netflix show or something made with immersive 3D VR180 video in super high resolution could REALLY sell it as well. It needs those truly killer apps still. One great feature would be a partnership with instagram or tiktok for a 3D-VR feed. Like a separate tab that features only the reels/etc that are made by creators filming in immersive video.

Yes, the Apple Vision Pro is too expensive. Your idea to cut the cost by removing the external eye display, and tethering to another Apple device like the M series iPad Pro or M series Mac systems is a good idea, in addition to Apple possibly creating an iPhone with an M series chip… if the cost could be 1.5 - 2K starting price maybe I might look at one…

Look over your shoulder at the original Mac and consider what that cost when it was released and how limited the capabilities of it were at the time. It’s not for the mass market right now hence the Pro in the name. I think that Apple realizes that the most compelling use case for the average consumer is the immersive content (sports, concerts, TV) but to get content produced they need a large market so they have a chicken and egg. They’re prioritizing a lower cost model to get it in more hands. Regardless I’m convinced the Vision line will be successful.

Companies been promising VR will be mainstream for over 20 years.
Fundamentally the tech has usability issue which means it will always be an edge case.
Lots of people don’t want something stuck to their face.
AR in a sunglasses like setting has use cases and being not to bad I could see finding some success.
But even then people are like, why you wearing sunglasses inside or at night, so now you need inside classes.
Think this tech is always going to be edge use cases or people that just like tech.

You realise that the original Mac took Apple to bankruptcy, right? Steve jobs Apple was not making money at all… they were in the red… I don’t think that will ever repeat again… I believe Apple Vision Pro has died a long time ago, Apple answer to shareholders, and at this moment it is a hard sell to mass produce a device that it can not sell… it is even more expensive in other countries…

Business are just learning how to exploit it (like NVidia’s Digital Twin technology). I was working for an Apple dealer when the original Macintosh was launched and I heard the same arguments then. I see a bigger shift here in human computer interface especially when combined with AI. Time will tell.

I‘d like them to support VR controllers for games or make their own ones. Get rid of the tethered battery, drop the front display, make it plastic instead of metal, get rid of a few sensors and maybe a slightly lower resolution display.
I‘m mostly interested in their software and platform tie in.

The external battery is better for weight reduction and comfort.
Only a naive fool would want lower resolution displays.
      🤣🤣🤣
The current Vision Pro STILL doesn't have enough resolution per eye to qualify as "Retina" level.
The resolution has to increase for future headsets. NOT be downgraded.

@@PSYCHOV3N0M Have to agree with you... external battery is a fantastic design choice, especially since it's probably one of the first components to need replacement after several years, and also allows people to buy multiple batteries if they want to use the device for long hours without access to power. ALSO, agree with you about the displays... a downgrade there would defeat the purpose... that's what I MOST want about the current headset. However, I like the idea of VR controller support -- I think official support for the Sony VR2 controllers would be a great partnership if they also allowed cross-play of VR games between the two devices.

  • @DennisMathias

You're pretty much spot on. There are things on the VP that I wouldn't miss (if I had one). I don't need virtual eyes. Weight is a big issue and maybe they could offload some of that into a battery/cpu combo and make the VP more of an I/o device. And did I miss the audio solution? Ambient audio is not going to cut it. We'd need some sort of sound isolation to make it convincing. With optional feed through of course. All devices like this will be driven by content so that has to happen.
Now, about Meta. I think they have a product that is overpriced and again the content is not there. They need to get AI in there yesterday. Don't leave us hanging.
It's possible that the price point is still to high for middle class but hopefully that will come down but you have the glasses floor and those sunglasses are expensive anyway. Get the glasses component priceworthy and they'd kill the market. I don't think Apple will do that because at some point or another VR is still their bailiwick.

i just made it into an Apple Store and was really really impressed by the demo of it. smaller and lighter than I thought. honestly they need a $1500 version yeah to still give you a reason to buy the $3500 version. im totally okay with plastic and high-end iphone thethered processing, less cameras at worse quality and no EyeSight. they need a dev ecosystem to get going. even if they have to cut back on the display quality inside or put a really old chip into it, it's worth a cheaper version to get into people's hands. even if thats just a one off and only the premium version sticks around. I would be in no hurry to update the premium current Vision Pro now, the display and audio quality will be amazing for years to come

    • @joelface
      @joelface 4 дні тому

I agree with removing the Eyesight front screen, and switching to a plastic body. I'm not sure about removing cameras, but maybe some sacrifices could be made there, as long as it can still track your position well and your eye movement well, as those are absolutely crucial to using the device.
I'm wary of the tethered-iphone though, as it essentially makes the Vision Pro into an iphone accessory... and means you have to actually upgrade your phone before you can buy the device... I think for a cheaper headset, that's maybe a tough ask (even if it makes sense). Especially since if you ever switch to an android or something you'd essentially be making your device useless.

If they want to concentrate on a light version, go for it, making the price somewhere around 1999 maybe we even lower. But vision third-party app developers need to incorporate the ability to have services that will allow live streaming for concerts, sporting events, education, and travel. If they can’t achieve this with that lower price point with the services, I just mentioned Apple will have an indispensable device that will be Very important in every day activities. In other words, they will hit a home run just like UT did and winning the college football World Series I just watched the home coming parade . It was incredible

    • @barty8980
      @barty8980 3 дні тому

It always was the eventual plan. But Apple had to prove the proof of concept so gave the first Vision Pro’s everything they could in the first iteration. That sets the bar VERY HIGH and any competitor has to price similarly or face big losses trying to provide similar quality at lesser prices. Apple’s business model is not to dominate a market but be the best in the market. At some
Point, they can reduce costs by economies of scale or better yet cheaper parts, but still maintain the quality standards.
Then revenues and margins are stabilized and profitable.

It needs some killer app or a few must have experiences before I would even consider it. Currently, I don’t see a way for it to be commercially successful in the near future. Today(& I could change my mind in the future) it looks like one of the devices Apple stops talking about and a few years later quietly disappears. I don’t ever see me owning one.
