Two different drummers. Bonzo is more Soulful and ambient in his playing, and Neil is more precise and Technical. It's like comparing apples and oranges...
....and then there's Danny Carey. Influenced by Bonham and jazz greats, as ambient and soulful as they come. But is one of the few who can hang with Peart technically. Peart reigned supreme to me from '81( I was 10) until '96 when Aenima (Tool) dropped. When I heard the emotion and technical melded into one. Danny Carey, who is highly regarded by his peers as well, has got to be high on the list as well.
Joshua, I couldn't agree more, Bonham was also agressive in his control of the music...how else are you going to keep Jimmy Page in place. Between him and John Paul Jones they provided the backbone for page & plant to roam....Rush is a completely different animal; where you have 3 virtuosos on their instruments that have been playing for over 4 decades together and know each other's tendencies better than themselves, this allows them all to be so technically precise and everything comes together where any other group would need at least 5 if not 6 members to get the same sound. I wish Bonham had more time to continue to develop his what I always looked at as controlled agression the way he attacked the music especially with a relatively small set. JPJ and him could have controlled a hurricane together but without either part they were still great but they weren't able to continue
I met Buddy in 1994. Amazing! I should have never washed my hand after shaking his. 🤣 Update: To the insistent pricks that have nothing better to do: The year was 1984 when I saw Buddy. Buddy Rich, John Bonham & Neil Peart are arguably the 3 most influential drummers of all time. It makes sense when u think about their playing styles. There's the jazz guy, the rock guy & the progressive guy.

Beyond his drumming skills, you should read his book, Ghost Rider, Travels on the Healing Road. He continued his career after a tragic loss in his life, and he continues to share his gift with the world.
You have to listen to YYZ. Solos are cool but hearing him play with the other two members of Rush is magical. Neil will be your new number two drummer ever sir.
#2 my ass! Neil Pratt is in a class all alone! Come on Zeppelin was a great "Studio Band" but Bonham couldn't stay sober long enough to become what he should have. We should be comparing the two, but one was in love with music and drumming and one was in love with partying and music. I am an addict so don't think I am judging, I am judging! I loved to hear Bonham play, even when he was wasted! He died much too soon to aspire or rise to the top. This is criticism by reality! Peace
Neil said it was like doing math equations while running a marathon. Percussionist, musician, composer and a constant student. RIP Neil you're greatly missed.
People often forget about the Phil Collins amazing drumming with Genesis and Brand X in the 1970's since he's better known as a pop star from the 80's and 90's. And his drum duets with Chester Thompson in concert with Genesis were unstoppable.
In case you didn't notice...@ 6:36 in your video, Neil is playing 3/4 time with his feet while playing different speeds/times with his hands. Bass drum with his right foot, then two tambourine sounds with his left foot. My favourite drummer.
James Stacey I thought Neil always said it was his lack of coordination that allowed him to do this. Reference the story of Alex and him taking motorcycle lessons.
In the 70s, Neil Peart ran a 35 price set with 3 BASS DRUMS!(Triple kicks). Listen to Rush as a band to truly appreciate why they are known as "the Musician's Musicians".
"i would hate to be his neighbor, dude!" best endorsement ever. the thing is; neil is not even breaking a mental, emotional or a physical sweat. he is so good that he can just phone it in.
Neil would probably be the first to say he never phoned it in. He gave every performance everything he had for his entire career. If only all musicians held themselves to such a high standard. Neal has chosen to retire before his skills diminish from age and wear and tear. Rush has always been as much about integrity as the music itself, which is one of the reasons they’re so beloved and revered.
Neil Peart is more jazz finesse and just a virtuoso drum player, but Bonham is more groovy and his beats have that badass swagger to them. Technically I would choose Peart over Bonham, but going with a deep groove and feel for a song is Bonzo over Peart. I love both, but its apples and oranges to me, I prefer oranges in their raw form and in juice, but apples are superior when making desserts and pastries.
You are only getting a part of Neil's skill set here, he also wrote most of the lyrics and his drumming in the songs is fu*king unbelievably precise, check out YYZ or Analogue Kid.
I think he went beyond Bonham from the beginning I think a lot of Bonham enthusiasts are merely claiming him to be the greatest simply because of the whole Led Zeppelin nostalgia. If you sit back and not have a bias opinion, you'll hear that Peart is already better than Bonham on the release of "Fly By Night" Now to somewhat defend John Bonham, I don't believe that he took drumming as seriously as Peart did. Plus Bonham was drunk all the time. Who knows, maybe if he sobered up he might've gotten better Neil Peart G.R.D.O.A.T. (Greatest Rock Drummer Of All Time) 2nd.......when the fuck cares?
When I was in music school, at M.I., in the drum program, some teachers classified Bonham's style as "slush", i.e. a feeling that's in-between swung and straight and that only he knew. It was innate with Bonham. Not easy to emulate. You either have it or you don't. Also, Bonham had that monster sound.
Neil Peart is a genius. It seems impossible that someone could create such an extraordinary sound. I swear, I sat with my jaw dropped open in amazement the whole time. Loved your reaction so much. Made me laugh. That was great!
Neil Peart is a living legend. If you ever listen to Rush's songs, the drumming is featured just as much as the other instruments. For some good Rush songs with incredible drumming: "Tom Sawyer" (the drums hold the whole song together, and it's an absolutely killer rock song! One of the best songs!), "Natural Science", "Vapor Trail" (from the "Vapor Trails Remixed album, not the un-remixed one which had bad sound mixing), "Clockwork Angels", "Witch Hunt". Heck, a lot of Rush songs have incredible drumming in them. As a three-man band, each one uses their instruments to fill out the sounds. Neil very often uses his drums to play part of the melodies.
Good to see someone recommend Vapor Trail. That was such a great song, and they never did it live as far as I'm aware. Such a shame. That was probably my favorite track off that album.
lol I remember another reaction vid to a rush song where the person stopped and commented ..."damn, all three of these guys are performing a solo all at once and it works perfectly."
At the height of Neil Peart's career he still went out to learn more about his craft and the man he sought out the great Buddy Rich. So who does that? :-)
I am a schooled drummer, attended M.I. in Hollywood, CA, for two years, majored in music in college and studied with many great teachers, including Ed Shaughnessy. I basically "grew up" with Neal Peart's drumming and listened to Rush religiously for many years, starting in my early teens. Neil Peart is a true composer on the drums. I'd say that Steve Gadd is the Hemingway of drums. Neil Peart is the Mozart of drumming. Impeccable. A true inspiration for achieving perfection.
Neil Peart is a drummers drummer lol. He is pretty much the gold standard of technique power and feel. If you wanna hear a ,e;pdoc sp;p check out the solo from yyz on exit stage left or chronicles.
I'm stunned and saddend. I'm a guitar player and it's his lyrics that touched me more than the drumming. It's going to take a while to process this and I know others are doing the same. The world lost a very gifted soul. Thank you Neal.
Neil's lyrics helped me through so much, "Subdivisions " made me feel like I wasn't alone in my weirdness, "Nobody's Hero" helped me through loss. I live in St. Catharines, and I'm saddened by the loss of our hometown boy. I've been crying off and on since first hearing about his passing. Wherever his spirit is, may he be drumming.
People usually can't believe it is just three guys. Love to tell them that it is just the three and that they sound every bit as good live as they do in the studio. Or did, anyway.
Loooool. From those of us that have followed Neal for 35+ years (i am a 55 year old hobby drummer) thank you. I am no where near Neal’s caliber, not even close but, your very polite comment that he isn’t old but not young. I about fell off my chair laughing. Rush was by far the best rock band of their time, before and beyond.
At one point, he's playing two different time signatures at once. You can hear the bass drum and bell in the background. The two signatures have a common resonance after 2 or 3 bars and come back together. So insane.
Hate to disagree with you bud, but if you listen to more of Rush's catalogue, and the intricacy required on so many of their tunes, the complexity, time signature transitions, Neil Peart is unmatched!! Great to see you lovin' on Rush though! Oh, and you have to try and find the live versions of tunes like Xanadua, La Villa Strangiato, YYZ, etc. to really appreciate how these 3 guys perform all this stuff live!
wiseonelol25 totally nailed it. Was thinking the same exact thing. Neil’s intrinsic percussions on EVERY song is what makes him better than Bonzo. Yet, this solo totally shows Keith Moons and John Bonhams influence on Neil. I see some of Neil’s solo techniques equivalent to Bonhams “Moby Dick.” Moreover, The Song Remains the Same Live concert version.
MorbidManMusic, sounds like somebody is jealous. The guy played two or three different drum sets all in one. Combined big band, xylophone and rock drumming . next thing you are going to tell me that you can outplay John Bonham, Bill Ward or Ginger Baker on the skins.
You are correct. John P. had diabetes and they were worried about his health. Neil took over after their first album. My first introduction to them was High school in 1978.
Unless you are from San Antonio, or know someone who was living here at the time, you don't know that since Rush's debut album, radio station, KISS/KMAC had two djs playing their music on heavy rotation here. They are even given credit on the All the World's Stage album. So we knew what Rush had since the beginning. Then the rest of the world caught on.
@Domingo Reyes, Buzzz... Sorry, wrong answer ! Where did you get this information? Seriously? I grew up in the (216) Cleveland, Ohio. And in 1974, the FM radio station WMMS was all ears on RUSH. DJ, and music director Donna Halper, & DJ Kid Leo, gave their vinyl a spin. Cleveland, being a primarily Blue Collar city, felt the message, and groove RUSH was playing. And consistently requested "Working Man". The response resulted in a record deal for the band, which RUSH gave Donna, special thanks for her part in their early history and dedicated their first two albums to her. The first RUSH album originally was on their own label called "Moon Records". And released only 3,500 copies in Canada. But, when WMMS, received phone calls asking where to buy the record. Copies of the Moon Records album were imported to the Cleveland area and quickly sold out.The record's popularity in Cleveland quickly led to the re-release of the album by the major label Mercury Records.Your Texas, stations may have got a mention from RUSH, on the "All The World's A Stage" album for KISS/KMAC support, in playing their album. But, it wasn't a shout out to your station in San Antonio, for being the DJ's that showed RUSH to the world from the beginning. You and the rest of Texas, were already behind 4 albums into RUSH's career with that album. He also said that no one hit the drums harder than Bonham. He didn't disparage Bonham, just that they came from different places.
Not only was Neil Peart voted the worlds best (#1) drummer and received many awards, but also voted as such by other world class drummers for many years. Neil Peart is more than just a drummer, he is a percussion maniac. The concentration and muscle control to play sets as long as Rush did with drum solos in every song. He should have locked up with extreme cramps and pure fatigue. I loved watching him back in the 70's when they started. The man was and is a phenomenon and I hope his retirement helps with his chronic tendonitis and bad shoulder problems he has been suffering. I am glad he became a legal U.S. Citizen in 2010. Bonzo is always number 1 but Neil Peart is very close! The difference is they are both technical but when it comes to solos, Neil prefers to do a very musical sounding solo that could be it's own song. Neil was 52 when this was recorded. His catalogue is 100 times larger than anyone’s. Enough said!
I like how Neil does his solos without even breathing heavy. Shows no signs of fatigue whatsoever.
He hasn't felt any pain since the 70's. R.I.P.
He just passed away January 7th. The news didn't come out until the 10th...
He rides his bicycle between cities on backroads on off days while touring. Sometimes 100 miles a day. His body is a machine. Until last week. RIP brother Neil.
@@CigarMan4Life1 I think he gave his bicycle up for a motorcycle he would carry on the equipment trailers and ride when he felt like exploring.
@@boone315 He didn't give it up, but you're right when his wife passed away he took 6 months off and trans versed south america on his motorcycle and when deep into his mind while riding.
Two different drummers. Bonzo is more Soulful and ambient in his playing, and Neil is more precise and Technical. It's like comparing apples and oranges...
Neil is the best not just with his sticks, he actually penned every lyric Rush ever sang. think about that.
....and then there's Danny Carey.
Joshua Diggs, exactly. Like comparing the daring intros of Beethoven to the soft crescendo build ups of Bach.
Don’t think Danny holds a candle to Bonham, but it’s all subjective.
His drum solos are awesome but within the songs of Rush the drumming is epic.

Absolutely brother
Listen to La Villa Strangiato......amazing
Who inspired most of these guys really is Buddy Rich
And Gene Krupa.
I met Buddy in 1994. Amazing! I should have never washed my hand after shaking his. 🤣
Update: To the insistent pricks that have nothing better to do: The year was 1984 when I saw Buddy. Look guys, I have man hands and wasn't wearing my glasses when I typed it in on my phone. Anyway, fuck off if you think I am full of shit, I really don't care.
Buddy Rich, John Bonham & Neil Peart are arguably the 3 most influential drummers of all time. It makes sense when u think about their playing styles. There's the jazz guy, the rock guy & the progressive guy.

Peart or Bonham? No winner there.. two different styles that we can enjoy.

I'd say 3, after Bonzo and Ginger Baker, but the guy is a magician, no doubting that.
Peace

Now you know why weve been going to see them for decades. My pal and I have been going since 82. He first saw them in 78. RUSH on!
People often forget about the Phil Collins amazing drumming with Genesis and Brand X in the 1970's since he's better known as a pop star from the 80's and 90's.
And his drum duets with Chester Thompson in concert with Genesis were unstoppable.
Dude seriously my fav stuff from him is suppers ready 9/8 part, and dancing with the moonlit knight. Amazing drumming!

Peart is the next level. Nobody can compare. Who else can sound like Bonham and Moon at the same time. But could they have ever sounded like him?
Shame he had to retire
They retired because Neil took enough of a beating that he couldn't perform at Neil's level any more and he knew when was when.
@Ed Nicholson Neil joined Rush in 1974 John Bonham didnt die until 1980
Ed Nicholson - You should be taking grammar school language arts classes instead of spouting off about things on which you’re woefully misinformed.
In case you didn't notice...@ 6:36 in your video, Neil is playing 3/4 time with his feet while playing different speeds/times with his hands. Bass drum with his right foot, then two tambourine sounds with his left foot. My favourite drummer.
I wonder how many people realize that? What kind of coordination does he have to do that!
Neil calls it a Waltz beat.
@@joconnell8145 Max Roach called it theft. It's still kickass.

@@joymusicworld1 yes just kidding 😊
There are a lot of great drummers but #1 rock drummer ever is Peart (pronounced Peeert) hands down. You just watched the mid fifties version of him.
Neil Peart is probably the the most businesslike drummer that you'll ever see
The drummer in the jazz background is Buddy Rich who was his hero. The video I like the best is the drum battle with Gene Krupa and Sammy Davis Jr.
Nah, the best was Animal vs Buddy Rich on the Muppet show

John Bonham was a force of nature of speed and power. Neil Peart is a mad scientist. They're the two best I've ever seen/heard.
You are only getting a part of Neil's skill set here, he also wrote most of the lyrics and his drumming in the songs is fu*king unbelievably precise, check out YYZ or Analogue Kid.
To quote Vinnie Paul, "Neil Peart is God on drums." The reaction of disbelief is priceless...you have been exposed.
Neil Peart is probably the best technical drummer I’ve ever heard. Bonzo has power and soul.
You nailed it!
Perfect description.
That's it, exactly. Thanks for the description.
I think he went beyond Bonham from the beginning
I think a lot of Bonham enthusiasts are merely claiming him to be the greatest simply because of the whole Led Zeppelin nostalgia.
If you sit back and not have a bias opinion, you'll hear that Peart is already better than Bonham on the release of "Fly By Night"
Now to somewhat defend John Bonham, I don't believe that he took drumming as seriously as Peart did. Plus Bonham was drunk all the time.
Who knows, maybe if he sobered up he might've gotten better
Neil Peart G.R.D.O.A.T. (Greatest Rock Drummer Of All Time)
2nd.......when the fuck cares?
When I was in music school, at M.I., in the drum program, some teachers classified Bonham's style as "slush", i.e. a feeling that's in-between swung and straight and that only he knew. It was innate with Bonham. Not easy to emulate. You either have it or you don't. Also, Bonham had that monster sound.
Neil Peart is a genius. It seems impossible that someone could create such an extraordinary sound. I swear, I sat with my jaw dropped open in amazement the whole time. Loved your reaction so much. Made me laugh. That was great!
Nico Mcbain of Iron Maiden called Neil Peart the God of drummers. Enuff said.,... Also Neil's drumkit goes on tour by itself!!!
Harold Wright an endorsement from the drummer of Iron Maiden says it all. Nobody will ever come close to bonham
Nico wasn’t even the best Maiden drummer. Clive all day
Maiden is my fave of all time, but cant really compare.
Nico Mcbain is also a fuckin' beast on the drums love Iron Maiden!!
I saw them 10 times and Geddy always introduced Neil as the "Professor of the drum kit"
Neil Peart is your favourite drummer’s favourite drummer.

Neil is an excellent & most precise time keeper!
Neil is on a whole another level and the greatest of all time as a drummer and percussionist .
Dude, this is the wrong solo to be comparing him to bonzo. Do more research. Neil is the best drummer ever.
Neil ROCK GOD, bonzo has nothing on neil.
Exactly right! No one compares to Neil
Technique with no soul...Bonzo takes it
Neil Peart is a living legend.
He had other teachers as well. Somewhere on the internet is an interview where he talks about it
Yep Buddy Rich was the FIRST of the best.
Also listen to the Neil Pearts YYZ solo from 1981 Exit stage left album.
Don't forget the Working Man solo from "All The Worlds A Stage"
James Trowbridge I have that cd but haven't really noticed the solo. Gotta check it out
Neil wrote the lyrics to my childhood. I can’t believe he’s gone. Very sad.
I really enjoy folks hearing Rush (Lifeson,Lee,Peart)for the first time!!
People usually can't believe it is just three guys. Love to tell them that it is just the three and that they sound every bit as good live as they do in the studio. Or did, anyway.
Behold.......the GREATEST of all time!! Sadly he's retired now, but we still can see him here on UA-cam.
All you need to do is listen to the band play together and it all makes sense bro. Check out yyz, it's an instrumental and you won't be disappointed!
Yes! yYZ live from “Exit Stage Left” is shorter but incredible! No video for it that I know of.
YYZ is a good one! Tom Sawyer is also classic, or La Villa Strangiato for more proggy instrumental goodness.
Yup YYZ :)
and It's one of those songs that tons if drummers have been trying to learn.
Have to agree, YYZ definitely showcases the skill and wizardry of Peart. And, he was also the band's lyricist. Amazing prose.
11:25 - He's still got it dude...
That's because Neil Peart created IT.
Proof why he is nicknamed the professor.
MorbidManMusic, sounds like somebody is jealous. The guy played two or three different drum sets all in one. Combined big band, xylophone and rock drumming . next thing you are going to tell me that you can outplay John Bonham, Bill Ward or Ginger Baker on the skins.

Peart by a landslide. I saw him 3 times live. Simply mindblowing!
This has been going on since 1978, Bro! Neil is the best!
Neil joined Rush prior to the band releasing Fly by Night in early 1975.
And not to be a azz. But if you're a true RUSH fan? Why distort the FACTS!! like this BS! Unless, you are just.... Living in the limelight,

When asked about playing with either Bonham or Ginger Baker, Eric Clapton said without hesitation he would take Baker because he was classically trained and Bonham wasn't.

@@KrS-nf7vg Almost accurate... The debut album (RUSH) was before he joined, and I can think of at least a couple songs on 2112 (Tears by Ged and Lessons by Alex) that were not Neil's lyrics. But you're correct in spirit, the vast majority of their stuff that really stands the test of time (and there's a lot of it) was Neil Peart writing the lyrics as well as the bulk of the drum parts.
KrS10000 you forget their fist album with drummer John Rutsey, Neil didn’t write those lyrics. Rutsey couldn’t tour due to medical reasons so they auditioned new drummers and found Neil
If we compare them, it's obvious that Neil Peart is better than John, because he has more technique and he plays harder patterns drums. In addition, Neil peart's groove is more powerful than John Bonham, only Jeff Porcaro had a better groove than Neil in Rock and popular music, Jeff and Neil are in the same level than jazz drummers, I love John Bonham's style, but Neil is better.

Peart INCREDIBLE PERCUSSIONIST but he can get down and dirty as well. From another planet. Bonham straight up Thunder G-D. Check out Mike Portnoy's drumming skills as well. Rush the band Pearts in are a 3 piece and all of these guys are INCREDIBLE musicians. Canada's claim to fame. Bro your face says it all while he's playing. Thanks for the great laugh you gave me.
PS check out Buddy Rich on drums. I believe Peart growing up emulated him. Peart will be 67 in Sept
Neil Pert and Buddy Rich are the two best drummers of all time!!!!!
"He's not old" Neil Peart is 66
@MorbidManMusic I believe he once said he could play like Charlie Watts until he was 80(?), but not like Neal Peart lol. Paraphrasing of course....
To be fair the video was from R30.
@@RushFan-2112 yeah he's like 51 here

Neil Peart....best LIVING drummer on the planet.....period!!!!
Btw, for melodic technical drumming, Neil Peart is THE MAN!
Keep watching, nobody even comes close to what Neil can do. Loved the reaction👍
I really appreciate your eclectic perspective AyeJay, nice to witness your thoughts and opinions on different genres of music. Your viewpoints are very liberating... thanks for that man...
... Neil Peart is one of my favorite drummers and inspired me along with John Bonham and Buddy Rich... Maintain little brother!...
Pert isn't just the world's greatest drummer, he writes all their song lyrics too!
Check out: "YYZ" and "Xanadu" by Rush...
Yes, the lyrics to YYZ are Neil’s absolute best!!
IMO: Neil Peart is/was the best!!!!
Neil retired in 2015.
Bonham died in 1980, he was 32.
Neil born in 1952
Bonham born in 1948.
Bonham was an inspiration to Peart. One of many.
Peart had a longer career. I would imagine Bonham would have had a long career if he hadn’t died: died from Pulmonary Aspiration: choked on his own vomit........ alcohol induced.
My 2 favorite drummers: Neil Peart and John Bonham.
So Neil was around 61 or 62 during the recording of R40 if this is where this solo is pulled from
