NEIL PEART FACTS
-Neil Ellwood Peart, born September 12, 1952 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
-Drummer/lyricist for the band Rush (joined in mid 1974). Accomplished author of 13 books/publications.
-Won several awards throughout his career.
-Drumming influences: Keith Moon, Ginger Baker, John Bonham, Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Freddie Gruber.
-Rooted in hard rock, Peart changed his playing style incorporating jazz and swing components after becoming a pupil of Freddie Gruber in 1994.
-Peart lost his only daughter (at the time) in August 1997 followed by his first wife in June 1998.
-Retired in December 2015, and band member Alex LIfeson confirmed in January 2018 Rush was disbanded due to Peart’s Health issues.
-On January 7, 2020, age 67, Neil Peart died after a 3 ½ year battle of glioblastoma (brain cancer).
FACTS ABOUT THIS DRUM SOLO
-Performed during the R40 Rush 30th Anniversary Tour in 2004 in Frankfurt, Germany.
-Neil Peart stated in an article in 2015 (Neil Peart: Marching to the Beat of a Different Drum: www.loudersound.com/features/... ):
“My vague design for that solo was deceptively simple. I would approach it as if I was just sitting down at the drums to start playing - to exercise the improvisational skills I have been working on for, oh, about ten years now. Technically, I was determined to exemplify everything I thought I knew about drumming, and everything I love about the drums - almost 50 years of experience and passion had to go in there somehow…”

The intro and outro music are a bit messed up/laggy and poppy. That was likely due to my computer issue. Apologies for that annoyance. I am upgrading the RAM tomorrow so this shouldn't be an issue going forward!
What I learned with this piece: It's hard to single out any one thing I took note of in the process of making this video as it's not a "song". I already knew Neil Peart was one of the best drummers in the world, but I did not know just how much of a master he was with drums. Particularly at making all four of his extremities move at different times, in different patterns. A LEGENDARY musician and lyricist, lost too soon.
I highly recommend: Thievery Corporation - "Le Monde": ua-cam.com/video/50sJKK9RvMA/v-deo.html
Great compilation never the less. He was a master of his craft in the truest sense
Neil inspired me to play the drums, and to travel to Africa. Uncle Neil saved my life. Here is my African song, in honor of the Professor. Kilebu Neil Peart ua-cam.com/video/Rs8ZlEcOucg/v-deo.html
Sorry let me correct you The Best Drummer in the world that is why they call him The Professor there are good drummers there are great drummers there are exceptional drummers
Then there's Neil Peart !
Appreciate your work dear. Saludos desde Austin tx
Before Rush Neil recorded an album with JR Flood in 1970. It has a psychedelic 60s groove. He was only 18 and you could hear his brilliance then.
There are people who play the drums and there are drummers and then there is Neil Peart in a league all by himself
Many years ago someone from a rock magazine asked Neil how he felt being named the greatest drummer alive, and Neil said: "Im not a drummer, im a percussionist."
Neal Peart is your favorite drummer’s favorite drummer. 👍
This is a true statement! My partner is a drummer and Neil Peart/Bonzo are his two favorites.
I was too young to go see J Bonham but did see N. Peart several times in Moving Pictures, Big Money and Test for Echo, all great shows.
Bonham was a great rock drummer. Neil was in a different realm altogether.
Amen brother.
Well either him or Danny Carey
Neil essentially takes you around the world in this solo, RIP professor
The most musical melodic drummer I've ever heard. Never excess...always about the music.
RIP Neil Peart (September 12, 1952 - January 7, 2020), aged 67
You will be remembered as a legend.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, RUSH is Canada’s gift to the world. 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦 Thank you Canada, the coolest country on the planet!👍✌️
📢👏👏👏👏!!!
“He’s beating those drums like they owe him money.” Love it. Lol
Not only the one and only true “God of the drums” but also a genuine,,, truly genuine, down to earth nice guy.
My eyes water every time I listen to Rush now, Neil’s passing was an immeasurable loss!
May he rest and rock in peace
Neil was the greatest. He once described his playing as "solving complex equations and running a marathon at the same time."
I saw this live many times! In person it caresses your soul! He wrote all the lyrics for RUSH. He was also an author, poet and just an amazing person...
The professor was on another level. Drummers keep the beat to metronomes, metronomes keep the beat to Neil Peart.
Neil Peart was also the 95% poet for all the lyrics. And the songs were based on those lyrics and his beats. NP WAS Rush.
He’s a legend. 1,000 years from now he will still be revered. Like Mozart…
RIP MAESTRO‼️‼️‼️
Just seeing this solo would have been worth the ticket price. Absolutely amazing, brilliant, breathtaking and yes, beautiful. He was simply the best of the best. Period. RIP Mr. Peart and thank you for your priceless contributions to music.
It was something we anticipated every single tour, and we were never disappointed.
There are some performers that are so transcendent that you’re proud just to be from the species as them!
Traditionally, the drum solo is the break in the concert where you run to take a leak-you NEVER did that at a Rush concert! RIP Neil!
Maybe that is why their shows began to have the intermissions in later years. But you are right, you NEVER left when Neil did his solo. The reactions everyone had showed why he was "The Professor". R.I.P. Neil.
Crazy fact about this solo: Neil actually stated he was frustrated with this particular solo and wanted to either use the next night’s solo, or splice them together for the DVD. That just goes to show the level to which he held himself. THIS was an “off night” to him. Meanwhile, every other drummer on the planet would kill to have a night like that! This is why I continue to love Rush even long after they retired and disbanded.
February 13, 2023 and I still miss Neil Peart. RIP, Professor
I’ve watched this performance a 100 times. Every time when we get to the big band/swing section, tears well up in my eyes. Neil’s passing was such a tremendous loss. I am grateful that I was able to see Rush in concert four times. All three are masters of their craft. I miss you, Neil.
This is why Neil was also known as "The Professor". Rest in Power Neil.... you are missed
I was very fortunate to live to see 5 different Rush shows and all had Neil doing his solos. A video simply cannot compare to the vibe and the energy of seeing it live. It's just an all-together different kind of experience. Neil Peart is greatly missed. Thank you professor for 40 wonderful years.
Você teve 5 maravilhosos privilégios de ver o Rush, O Neil Peart ao vivo?? Você é uma pessoa privilegiada, de sorte!
Neil was the biggest influence on me. 2112 led me on a 44 year love affair with both drums and prog. I got to watch him once from backstage. Stage right, behind the main speakers. He was so good! RIP to a master. His loss still hurts.
Neil inspired me to play the drums, and to travel to Africa. Uncle Neil saved my life. Here is my African song, in honor of the Professor. Kilebu Neil Peart ua-cam.com/video/Rs8ZlEcOucg/v-deo.html
2112 was my first concert I seen in Portland.
The only prog bands I like are Rush and Yes. If you consider Jethro Tull prog, then there's another one for me.
But, yeah, Neil Peart is one of the best to do it. You were blessed to see Neil so close during a show.
@@kenmahoney5255 yes I dug his flute back in the 70s the but it was a flute
Stop with the sub categories of rock.
Its rock plain and simple
Neil wrote about this particular performance in his book Roadshow, how he knew the Frankfurt concert was going to be taped and how he wished his playing had been better. He put so much pressure on himself in live performance, no wonder it wore him out. Yet an imperfect performance from him is an unattainable performance for the rest of us. His keeping three-four time with his feet while the hands do several completely unrelated patterns is itself a showstopper.
Metrodrome's trying to keep time with him most of the time
I'm glad you saw that as well. He never missed one note with the hi hat and kick while exploring everything under the sun up top.
I had no idea that Neil was in pain with blisters on his feet to the point of bleeding and he continued playing with all of his pain.
That's how it's done
@@boboskeeper1 some of us go to work regardless of our pain so did he and when I limp home I am happy I gave a good day rest in peace professor
Ladies and Gentlemen. The Professor on the drum kit
His passing will always bring an ache to my heart. I miss you, Rush. RIP Neal Pert.
What a Mount Everest of an edit you’ve pulled off here! I enjoyed every moment of this! Brava!
😅 Perfect description. This one was a doozy! But I just whined about how difficult the Lynyrd Skynyrd/Free Bird video was so didn't want to do it again here. lol I almost cried during this one... out of frustration. 🤣🙃

All 4 times I had the pleasure of seeing them, I still have never seen so much air drumming in my life but a RUSH concert.
I know that feeling well. RUSH Night was always very special. What a Vibe!
Saw them 4 times in my life from 1976 to 2015. 3 hours of pure prog mastery.
I was there and will never forget this evening. RIP Professor, best live performance ever and I'm lucky enough to see Rush a few times L & R
🤣🤣😂😂🤣🤣👌👌👍👍✌✌ I'd seen literally seen every one of those reactors react to this, I'm kinda of a Rush freak!!! Fantastic editing, thanks!✌✌
Thanks to all the reactors for keeping The Professor's legacy alive. As long as folks like you keep talking about Neil Peart (sounds like ear!), he will live on forever.

RIP Neil, knowing you accomplished your mission. The Best drummer ever.
Keep in mind, doing that solo, in the middle of a 2 1/2 Rush concert, and the type of music Rush plays! The brains on that man!
He once said "doing a solo is like running a marathon and solving equations at the same time". lol
@@WonderMommaOG yep, listen him in interviews, the dude was intelligent and witty.
I love all the dumbfounded looks as Neil jams away. The Master is at work students. LOVE IT!!!

Indeed the world not only lost one of the greatest of the great drummers, we lost a great man. Drummer, lyricist extraordinaire, and a wonderful human being. RIP Professor 🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🐐🙏🕊😢I still, and always will, shed more than one tear when I realize that we don’t have him with us anymore. We’ll always love and miss you Mr. Peart. Neil Peart was a true modern day Renaissance Man.
Neil Peart is one of those people that make it hard to find words to describe just how talented they are. He would turn a drum kit into an entire symphony.
There will never be another Neil Peart he was magical at the drum kit, he was in another place when he played the drum kit, THE BEST PERIOD!!!!!!
2 things- 1) GOD GIVEN TALENT! & B) A work ethic, thousands of hours of REAL ACTUAL WORK & practice- He was taking lessons in jazz & swing in his 40s & 50s that he was open about but very few ppl actually knew! That work ethic is very seldom seen anymore in any field
All Rush fans have always known what stellar artists they are.
This is the drumming equivelant of Eddie Van Halens eruption solo...epic!
Neil Peart was not only One of the GOATs, but he was humble enough during the early 90s to reinvent his drum style and re-learn his craft with some Jazz greats to get to where he wanted to be in his craft. How awesome is that - especially as an example to all who followed him, young kids coming up playing drums, and Rush fans in general - to be a GOAT and still turn around and go "I'm good but I know I can get/do better" getting better - to want to continue to learn his craft when he could have just sat at his pinnacle at the time and ridden that right out to the end.
We didn't just lose athe greatest drummer ever, we lost a great person.
Bonham, Peart, Moone, none better. Change my mind. Good day and rock on to all.
No matter how many times I see the Professor Neil Peart play that solo, it ALWAYS brings tears to my eyes. Just eye watering stuff. He's desperately missed. He was a percussionist first and foremost.
For a "old" Rush fans like me, who know already from the early 80's that Rush, all their members and especially Neil Peart, were a band and musicians so special, with so much talent, and at the top position (already) of their instrument. And at the same time, if I declare this to the people around me, I was for them, "somebody coming from the planet mars". It's sweet for me to watch reactions of these people who discover for the first time a great musician like Neil Peart. It's true, it's amazing to see a solo (with so much parts!) so accomplish (after probably 40 years of solos). Just the first section is amazing! But it's not the end , there another part, an another part, an another and another... I think this Neil Peart solo's in Frankfurt, it's to much (and dangerous) for a novice. 😉 Start with the solo's in 1975 "All the World's a stage"
AND NEIL I BELIEVE DID THIS DRUM SOLO 70 times on this TOUR WOW !!!
Rest In Peace Rock God!! Greatest ever. Was fortunate enough to see is mastery live a few times.
Greatest percussionist of all time. Niel Peart is the GOAT.
An additional lucky few have seen the light that Neil shined upon his fans and craft for decades. Not just a fast few years, but DECADES!! RIP dear Professor.
Ive seen rush 8 times. No regrets whatsoever. Im 56 now
For those of you who were never able to experience this live... Imagine THAT, amplified by 50,000 watts of power.
Actually their system was run very conservatively for the best sound they would run it approximately 300,000 w with a capacity of 600,000
Reactions brought tears to my eyes!...🥲
Sometimes It's difficult to remember how much you were affected after years & years of listening; and while in your subconscious you know; THIS was an IN-YOUR-FACE reminder in a HUGE way!
Watching those uploaders who are seeing for the VERY first time!..
..It's like...Welcome to the WORLD of Rush/Neil Peart , even though he has now left it! Where have you guys been?!?
But, at the same time, THAT'S the BEAUTY of it!..
R.I.P. my Brother..THIS is DEFINITIVE PROOF that YOU & your legacy will, not only reach/influence the new, but LIVE on FOREVER!!!

That would be me... thank you so much! I worked extra hard on this one... my partner is a drummer, and Neil is one of his drum heroes. He would have left me if I had messed this one up. 🤣😅

This guy never played second for any other drummer! I've seen this band play six times and still to this day I do not feel like I understand everything about it. All three members were completely unique, and added very specific elements to make uo what Rush is known for? Pure artistry!
Neil was the GOAT. He is sorely missed.
As a drummer for many decades I could never emulate what Neil did. He was in a league all his own. And you WonderMommaOG is also in a special league all your own as well. To encapsulate all the reaction video's into one is a masterclass on editing. Very well done and I'll be watching this over and over again in the future.
Wow, thank you for the kind words. I really do not consider myself very good at editing. I've never had any official training or experience doing it. I have been doing it periodically all for personal projects since high school (though it was slideshows with a projector back then lol) but it's definitely something I love doing provided the content I'm editing is worthwhile.
Again, appreciate you for saying this, what a huge compliment.
@@WonderMommaOG You've set the bar pretty high for "not considering myself very good at editing." Please don't sell yourself short.Your video was a pleasure to watch. Very first time I've seen a split screen this well made. You're exclusive in what you want to show and do it well. I'm a "crabby" 67 year old musician and know, by now, what is a flawless representation of a subject. Don't want to be maudlin but just keep doing what you're doing. I subscribed of which I don't do often.
@@rdjraa4983 😊I really appreciate the kind words... and know what you mean about being choosy about subscribing, so that says a lot. I suppose I've probably evolved a bit and just don't really stop to think about that a lot. I did go back and watch my first few reaction compilations and ... oh boy. 😅 I've definitely polished a few things and hope to keep improving. Thank you for being here.
Yes...he is the GOAT and always will be.
Neil was a member of the Buddy Rich Band, toured with them in place of Buddy, he wasn't just a student of Buddy, he was his friend.
I play drums, thrash, speed, power metal were easy for me learn, but Neil was hard to learn. Hardest part of any style for me is bass, first few playthroughs I listen to just the bass drums, that bit where Neil's tapping the hihat "chi-chi...chi-chi" with his left foot while going crazy on the rack, that is a lot harder than people think, metal drummers don't do that, it's a jazz thing.
This performance was during the THIRTIETH ANNIVERSARY of Rush when Neil Peart was 52 or 53! I was fortunate enough to see Rush when they stopped in Milwaukee in 2004. And this was also only 3 years removed from when he had quit playing for 2 years and had to teach himself how to play again.
I remember when I took my son to see them in 2008. The drum techs came out before Rush took the stage and removed the cover off Neil's kit and the kit got a standing ovation!! RIP Professor....
I tear up every time I see him play. 😢
OMG... That's amazing... I'd probably cry if I saw a video of that now.
@@WonderMommaOG I became a Rush fan in the summer of '75 when I bought a used 88-track tape of "Fly By Night" from a friend. He needed gas money so I bought FBN, Heart's debut and The Mothers - 'Over Nite Sensation' for a total of $5! I was lucky enough to see Rush 8 times. The first was in 1981 in San Diego.
@@justineapril7922 So jealous!
@@WonderMommaOG Ty. I truly appreciate the video compilations that you do!!

Even in later years, still took lessons to improve. His ability is unmatched, forever.
A true master of percussion. Always learning and refining the art. That's why he's the Professor. Still missed.
I remember deeing the solo that included the tribute to Buddy Rich (the big band segment) on the Test for Echo tour. I went nuts as I got to see Buddy Rich live 6 times. I was lucky enough to see Neil 25 times starting in 1978. Im happy to see the younger genetations enjoying Neil and RUSH. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for this video...
Neil Peart drum solos are much like Eddie Van Halen guitar solos. Lots of different sounds and sections. Simply amazing!!!
This band respected all races and cultures. They have my respect.
I thank God every day for letting me see Rush live at the Perfect show in 2010 at Kansas City Kansas.
I’ve listened to him and Rush since I was a kid, he’s just so far beyond. It’s not just technical skill, he creates his own atmosphere and anticipation of the next part.
This is the best reaction video. I'm biased because Rush and Neil are the GOAT. Power 👏🏼
When I heard Neil Peart drum for the first time in 1980, it changed my life, literally! I became a fan of the band, Rush, and Neil's playing, that stayed with me till today and beyond.,I learned so much from him. Glad to see this video and to see so many experiencing his talents. ✌️🔥🤗👍
As a lifelong Rush fan it warms to heart to see the Professor getting the love he deserves. Of course, he would be embarrassed by it all because he was a very humble guy but we'll pour on the love anyway. Thanks to all the contributors to this compilation.
Your editing skills are FANTASTIC!!! editing people in on the beats? *chefs kiss* loved this
How amazing was the continuity of this video. Take a bow. As for Neil and Rush, they have been the soundtrack of my life. Listen to them every day. Been a fan since 1977 and actually flew out to America in 2010 specifically to catch 2 shows , one in LA and the other in Vegas. You couldn't wipe the smile off my face for a week
I have to say I got very emotional as well. This man has produced and played so many wonderful "emotions" . For what he has gone thru in his life. The loss of his daughter and his wife ;to then getting cancer and passing at such a young age! May God rest your beautiful soul Neil!🥹
Yes!
Ive been listening and watching Rush since i was 11 ,i'm 55 now and there will be no one like Neil ever again.Rush are one of those bands that people will be listening to in 2, 3, 400 years from now and still be going wow how did they do that.Glad i was around to see them on many ,many occasions.
The Professor was so humble despite having a tremendous gift of writing poetry as well as drums and also when writing took great concern about how Geddy and Alex could perform his masterpieces live. He wasn’t comfortable in the limelight which is why he wrote that song. He was really into his hero Buddy Rich and we can hear the jazz influences and how he evolved and only got better and better.

Check out his life. Such a tragic ending. Lyricist and award winning author. World traveler on a bicycle between shows and a BMW motorcycle. GOAT is an understatement.
Agree... not to mention the horrible losses he suffered in the 90's. From what I've read, he was an incredible human being. Very intelligent and talented man.
@@WonderMommaOG I guess my words were a bit wrong when I referred to tragic ending I was thinking about his wife and daughter passing as part of that tragic ending. His book The Ghost Rider is about a trip on his motorcycle to find his soul. It's a long read around 450 pages but worth the time.
