I’m a 55 year old Black lady and my brothers and I have been listening to RUSH since, aaah 76ish. This reaction video kind of saddens me. I had no idea there were people in the world who hadn’t heard Rush. Anyway, welcome aboard to the RUSH ride.
I've been to parties where there were 'whites and blacks'. We would take turns spinning songs. 2 groups that always had EVERYONE moving was Steve Miller and Rush.
Not just that. It's also what happens when 3 people go through their career with integrity, determination and kindness. I never have met them but they have been an inspiration to me.
What's more amazing is the main songwriters of the music. Alex and Geddy grew up together. They went to the same school and were bullied by the same bullys. Who's laughing now?
I never understand people who blindly hate music because it isn't a certain genre, I feel like people who have limited taste in music miss out on so much
The opening rhythm is Morse Code for YYZ, which is the 3-letter code for their hometown airport in Toronto. The band were in a small aircraft landing there and heard the morse code over the comm system. That morse pattern inspired the song. Great videos guys, welcome to metal!!!!
*Fun fact:* YYZ is the IATA airport identification code of Toronto Pearson International Airport, near Rush's hometown. The band was introduced to the rhythm as guitarist Alex Lifeson flew them into the airport. A VHF omnidirectional range system at the airport broadcasts the YYZ identifier code in Morse code. Peart said in interviews later that the rhythm stuck with them. Peart and Geddy Lee have both said "It's always a happy day when YYZ appears on our luggage tags." The piece's introduction, played in a time signature of 10/8, repeatedly renders "Y-Y-Z" in Morse Code using various musical arrangements
Further fun fact. Canadian airport ID codes all start with a Y because when they were first implementing the codes, they forgot about Canada so had to go back and add them with a Y since all the other codes were taken.
Great Scott - Well, full disclosure...I copied/pasted this segment from Wikipedia. I already knew about it from what they said in documentaries, but went there to find the name of the airport. Since I couldn't put it any better myself, I just copied it lol. :)
I was There. I'm from Rio. Knowing their existence since 1979 ( when I was 12 y) and not believing one day they would come down here...But they came in the end of 2002 ( then with 36y) can you imagine what it was like, to be in front of these incredible musicians...So much emotion and love in the can for so many years and then our emotions exploded. What an incredible night. Have you seen Freewill? We couldn't help but act like REAL FANATICS (that's where the word fans come from, doesn't it?) worshiping our GODS during the solo which is almost a threesome solo part, like super excellent jazz musicians interacting like hell They are the greatests
I want to say thank you. I have had one of the worst days i can remember and i saw a notification from youtube. Low and behold my favorite youtube artists are listening to a song from my favorite band. It may not mean much but you made a terrible day great. Thank you. Also more Rush and iron maiden please. Thank you.
Adam petrohilos same! Feel's weird when some (awesome actually) youtubers make life better, but it happens! Hope your shit lines up, but if it doesn't there's always music therapy or UA-cam therapy or the combo of both...lost in vegas😉😉😉
No other band with only 3 musicians can create this type of sound. Progressive rock is Rush... they weren't always but they defined it for certain. Widely viewed as the best drummer and bassist alive. Check out Pearts kit and Geddy's style, and Lifeson often is overlooked, but solidly in the top 10 lead guitarists of all time.
I think the term "progressive rock" had been floating around on the fringes of mainstream, but I'd wager most average music consumers of the day hadn't heard that term floated until the mid late 70's which is when I first heard that term used. It seemed to me at that time that people began retroactively using it to describe bands such as you mentioned, but also more famous groups like the Who and Yes, both of whom had major influence on Lee and Peart. One more point, With the exception of ELP (most of the time) Rush is about the only group that produces that full almost symphonic sound with only 3 members. That to me is what distinguishes Rush, and what defines progressive rock. The tempo shifts, the key changes, ..... Rush made the term "progressive rock" mainstream in my opinion. I remember for a time that bands who now are commonly referred to as prog rock were called things like synth rock, pre-punk, post psych.... nobody knew what to call them... which are legitimate genres to be sure, but not really how most would describe Rush. Also it seems to me that you're being a bit Brit centric, don't get me wrong, but Rush is often sneered at because they're not British in some circles. Just sayin you picked all U.K. bands. I hope you're not the Euro-centric music snob type.
Guys, Rush is a 3 piece. All 3 are considered to be some of the greatest ever. The bass player is also the vocalist and keyboardist. In concert, he does all 3 simultaneously.
not bad for 3 Canadians. i've been a Rush fan my whole life. Geddy Lee, the bassist, has always been a huge inspiration to me in my musical life and the reason i started playing bass.
I appreciated their musicianship was not a big fan but my husband is die hard! For his Birthday 3 years ago got him tickets to see Rush. I now bow to the alter of Rush. These guys kick serious ass and I had a great time at the concert. ❤️ the channel you guys rock! A Perfect Circle "The Doomed"
Neil Peart (drums) and Geddy Lee (Bass) have been the Drum and Bass gods for a generation of musicians. Rush is easily one of the best bands to ever walk the planet. BTW This album predated Beat It. lol
I came back here after Neil passed and it makes me feel good to see you guys get excited about hearing Rush for the first time…it reminds me of how excited I was finding Rush, they became my go to band when I needed something to just make me feel good and take me away from the days problems a few glorious minutes, Neil was a gift, to us..his incredible drumming and lyrics made him such an important component of the band…he is missed…
As a Rush fanatic of 40+ years, I cannot agree more with your comment. These two guys are great - just found them. Forget genres, forget racist stereotypes - these guys obviously love music and have a genuine appreciation for music that is indeed GREAT. Moving Pictures is without question one of the greatest albums ever recorded. Period. Created by one of the greatest bands of all time. Period. And by basically three guys who honestly love and respect each other as no band of their stature ever has. How frickin' awesome is it that 37 years after its release, two guys who probably weren't even born when Moving Pictures first hit the shelves can really love and groove to this piece of instrumental genius? cheers guys! Best part is you can now go and discover for the first time all the musical masterpieces from Rush's enormous, four-decade spanning catalog. Canada is automatically forgiven for eternity for all sins, past and present, merely by birthing Geddy, Alex and Neil. :D SUBSCRIBED! ENTHUSIASTICALLY!
Thanks! And did you notice? I'm a girl?? LOL Nothing like *NOT* standing in line at the restrooms at the concerts. Ahhh...the good ol' days. I can honestly say that Rush paved the pathway of my life. And it has been a long, hard road. But looking back? I find some comfort in knowing the mighty Triad has backed me up the entire way.
Absolutely noticed your membership in the fairer sex club. Indeed, over 40+ years ladies at Rush shows have been kinda rare, especially back in the kimono-days. :P But you've been out there! Matter of fact I dated a girl for 2 years [we parted amicably] that I first met at a MSG Rush back in the day :D One thing to the guys here: Michael's 'Beat It' was released in 1982. 'YYZ' was released in 1981. cheers and power to the ladies!
The song is called YYZ because Rush is from Toronto Canada, and the beat at the beginning of the song is based on the morse code beeps of the letters YYZ, which is the airport code for the Toronto airport.
First heard RUSH from my cousins after Permanent Waves had come out. Totally became a hard core fan when Moving Pictures came out, and until reading this comment had never known about YYZ being Toronto Airport and the mores code at the beginning. Always learn something new...
Oh, there are probably a few more beyond those... I meant it tongue in cheek just because RUSH is so technical. Plus I have zero credibility on this topic because, well, I don't dance. period.
You guy's are saying Michael Jackson's thriller was an influence. Rush's "Moving Pictures" was released in early 1981. Michael Jackson's "Thriller" wasn't released until a year and a half later.
Josh Grooves I would call him the most influential and creative. He's nore than just a drummer. He's a pure musician. He's definitely one of my favorites but he's not considered top 10 in drum circles as far as technical skill and grove go.
Loved the review - you guys are so down to earth (new subscriber here). Some fun facts about YYZ by Rush: 1) YYZ is the airport code for Toronto's Lester B. Pearson International Airport - Rush's home town (all major airports have a 3-letter airport designation code). Drummer and lyricist Neil Peart has said, in reference to the airport code, "It's always a happy day when YYZ appears on our luggage tags." 2) The beginning bell rhythm Neil is playing is the actual Morse code identifying signal of Toronto Airport (every airport is assigned a unique pulse/Morse code and that code is always being transmitted so that pilots can tell, roughly, where they are and verify that their navigational radios are tuned properly). 3) The airport's "rhythm" code was discovered by Rush's guitarist Alex Lifeson who is, not only an accomplished guitarist, but an accomplished private pilot as well. 4) The music was written by Geddy Lee (bassist) and Neil Peart during their recording sessions at Le Studio in Quebec, Canada in 1980. 5) In the March 2004 issue of Guitar World magazine, Alex Lifeson explained the bizarre-sounding harmonics heard before the solo: "I create them by playing off the pick and my thumb. I hold the pick so there's a slight edge of it showing between my thumb and finger. This allows my thumb to mute the string, and that's what causes the harmonic to ring." 6) The crashing noise you hear between the breaks of the guitar solo is the sound of windchimes tied to a 2x4 slapped against a wood table. The band confirmed this in an interview on WNEW New York in the winter of 2002. 7) YYZ was nominated and was the runner up for the Best Rock Instrumental award at the 1982 Grammys. It lost to The Police's "Behind my Camel."
Knew most of this except the morse-code part. Amazing. As for 5) it's called 'Chicken Picken' down here in the South.. been around forever. Willy G probably the best of the best at it.. La Grange, etc. ZZ = Apples and Rush = Cocktail Fruit. ;-) Love me both soooo much. YYZ all time fave. Love these guys reactions. Takes me back to my teen years when I first heard Moving Pictures.... what an amaaaazing album! Hope they change their mind about retirement... let us hope they come to their senses and at least give us fewer and BIGGER events.. sign me UP!
5) pinch harmonics....used all the time now, not so much then. Great info though, also a long time Rush fan. The Trees one of my faves, but can listen to YYZ anytime!
Thanks for an excellent and entertaining video. My first time watching a video by you guys and I immediately subbed. Great breakdown of such a timeless classic by a fantastic band.
As a life long Rush fan, whenever I'm feeling down, I watch your video. It is so amusing to watch you two get all goo-goo for one of my favorite songs. Always puts a smile on my face!
You guys make very astute observations. It's so interesting watching you guys react to stuff I've listened to for 25+ years and knowing that you just "get it".
Don't forget... All this music is made by just 3 guys. And they perform this live with no backing musicians, no pre-recorded tape, just the three of them performing it exactly how it was originally recorded. Geddy Lee is playing bass, while playing keyboards with foot pedals/controls! It's always fun to see someone discover Rush beyond the few mainstream hits they had.
screwyootube1 this!! My very first concert was rush at the Cow Palace in San Francisco and this was the opening. I was in Jr. High. I think my head exploded...
I was getting ready to go to bed but when I got the notification I had to click on this mad fast. This was another stellar video! I love it when you guys are really into the songs.
And the great thing about Rush is they hung it up when their time came, they stayed true to friendship and musical integrity. They didn't drag it out through endless nostalgia tours, screwing over bandmates over money, exploiting fans, and carrying on without essential band members. They went out on top with dignity.
Nah, they went out on Neil Peart's terms... It was obvious that Geddy and Alex wanted to keep going... I use their first names like I know them... But seriously, you can tell in the farewell doc that Peart was the only one TRULY done...
jimjonesthreethousand., actually Ricardo Castillo is too accurate for you to shrug it off as "nah". The band indeed went out with dignity. Peart's shoulders, arms and feet are no longer physically capable of holding up to touring live and Neil backed out stating he wouldn't do it w/o being able to perform at his best. Alex and Geddy were disappointed in the decision, but both acknowledged that it just wouldn't be Rush without Neil. So they went out as one... just like Ricardo Castillo very respectfully stated. I'm his 100th thumbs up, but you could call it his 101st when actually I'm giving his comment 2 big thumbs up!
Pincher Voice I will never forget seeing them play. Saw them at the Richfield colosseum in Ritchfield, Ohio back in 1981. We were treated to not only moving pictures but got close to a decade of their music. It was awesome!.
Finally, RUSH YYZ (YYzed) Gentleman thank you for finally getting to Rush, the greatest band ever (In my opinion). Many people criticize Rush for not having groove you proved their observation wrong! Just a note, in case you guys were unaware, Rush is a power trio, yes, three guys make the glorious sound that is Rush. Notice the Keyboard section. There are times when Geddy Lee is playing bass, keyboards and singing at the same time! Let's see Led Zeppelin do that! (A reference when I heard that Rush lost out to them in the vote for songs). You comment about the lyrics in the song, well if you want to hear people singing YYZ go to Rush in Rio and you will hear and see 60000 Brazillian fans singing and dancing to YYZ. It will blow you away. Indeed there is glass breaking in the song. After the Bass/Drum tradeofff, there are three times that you hear glass breaking in the song. The great thing is two of the three are not played on beat one, which as you have noticed give a funky feel to the song, among other riffs. YYZ is the airport code for Toronto, which is where Rush is from (yes just another great Canadian Band! LOL, like Devin Townsend, and I know how you feel about him!) Just for reference Rush is the 3rd largest selling band of all time. The song was inspired by the Morse code for YYZ (written in 5/4 time), as Rush used to fly into the Toronto airport and Neil Peart (Drummer) heard the pattern and decided to use it in the song. So the opening which is played on Crotales is YYZ, and shows up as a theme throughout the song. YYZ was the first (and maybe) only Canadian instrumental song ever nominated for a Grammy, it lost to Behind my Camel by the Police. During the Exit Stage Left tour (the tour for Moving Pictures, from which this song comes) Neil would insert a 6 minute drum solo after the last breakdown, it would send many Rush fans crazy and it is what helped solidify Neil Peart's position as one of the greatest drummers in Rock Music. I have played this song many times live (I am a drummer and Neil is my hero) and it ALWAYS gets the audience moving. Although not one of Rush's more complex songs, it does pose some challenges, particularly the triplet feels in the Bass/.Drum trade off section. The song is a wonderful nexus (as you pointed out) of various styles of music. Their entire catalogue is a mixture of musical influences from all over the world. If you listen to songs like Tai Shan, Mystic Rhythms, Roll the Bones (which has a rap section), Rush does it all and still ensures that the music is complex enough to satisfy musicians like me. Rush's quintessential song is Tom Sawyer which does have lyrics. Neil Peart the drummer, is not only an accomplished drummer but also a published author, and many of Rush's lyrical content (which Neil writes) is used in poetry classes to demonstrate simile and metaphor (I know this because I have taught using his work). There are so many great songs by Rush that I cannot even begin to list them. Check out more of them, and you will see their earlier stuff (up to Permanent Waves (album title) 1979) is far more progressive. With Permanent Waves to Grace Under Pressure (1984) you are more in a "pop" period. From Grace Under Pressure onto Test for Echo you get into African, R&B and Rock. While their final albums Vapour Trails to Clockwork Angles is an amalgam of all the above. Again, thanks for playing Rush, I NEVER get tired of hearing them. My wife sent me your link on this one because she knows I listen to you all the time, and always complain that you dont play any Rush! Keep up the great music and now play Count of Tuscany by Dream Theater (Metropolis does not cut it). Cheers Karl Sloman Drummer
Karl Sloman Love then to bits but not sure where the third best selling band of all time reference is from. Probably better than some many bands that have outsold them but that's neither here nor there
Robert, I think you will find Bytor and the Snow Dog was on All the World's a Stage, but I could be wrong. Although I am a HUGE Rush fan, I am more of a fan of the 80s to present stuff by the band. Although I maintain, if I could produce anything Rush did I would be extremely proud. A weak Rush song is better than most bands best songs! Cheers and thanks for commenting!
Pobbin (I am not calling you Daddy, because that just sounds wrong! LOL) I read an article a number of years ago from an online source. The list of the top 5 bands were The Beatles (of course), Rolling Stones, Rush, Aerosmth and Kiss. Regardless, Of all the bands listed Rush stands out because their success was made without any radio play. They did it by touring and just making amazing music.
Been subbed for a minute now, not sure if I've ever commented before, but love the diversity of the shit you guys listen to, as well as the in depth analysis of why you do or don't like songs and what you can appreciate from each. I'm primarily a hip hop fan, with the same appreciation for lyricism as you guys, so I really enjoy your opinions on all types of music. Rush is a group I'm already familiar with, but your reactions to a lot of things put me up on game with some things I would have never known about otherwise. Much respect. One of my favorite channels, hands down
Don Price at 3:47 “I’m sure there was some influence there.” Which based on their conversation implies that MJ’s Beat It influenced Rush’s YYZ which as we have learned in this comment thread that is simply not the case. Both great artists in their own right just wanted to convey the thoughts that I and others had at the reaction to the baseline.
"It doesn't have lyrics." LMAO! Great review guys, enjoyed watching as well... BTW, if you want to see people dance to this tune, check out the concert footage shot in Rio de Janeiro, "YYZ - Rush in Rio"
YYZ is the airport code for the city of Toronto. It is an ode to going home from touring. One could say that the original prog. rock bands were YES and Genesis. Alex Lifeson and Getty Lee are huge fans of YES and their playing is definitely a reflection of that.
Cody W - there is a bit more explanation for this song and the musicians in the band. YYZ is the IATA airport identification code of Toronto Pearson International Airport, near the band’s hometown. All three of them are playing additional instruments through MIDI controllers/triggers. Geddy uses a traditional keyboard and pedal controller, Alex uses a MIDI pedal controller, and Neil uses MIDI triggers. They all are sequenced to produce different parts of the song so with only three people on stage they can pull off a very big sound. The rest is pure talent!!! And lots of it...
+Bob Black The entire hemispheres album is golden if you ask me. No other album like it in its time and nobody, i mean NOOOOBODY......makes albums for the albums sake anymore
Watching two dudes hear this song for the first time and **LOVE** the hell out of the song...it makes my cold dead heart beat a little happy (irregularly timed) beat.
YYZ is from the Moving Pictures album, no lyrics / instrumental only. Try "Tom Sawyer," or. ."passage to Bangkok".. (it's about their pot smoking days in the 70's, youtube some of Rush' other songs? check out Neil Peart solos? OMG! Rock on Kyle!
You guys asked about seeing them doing it live. Here is YYZ by RUSH about 30 years after their original recording: ua-cam.com/video/Yj5nXTijf_A/v-deo.html
You guys just get it. I was waiting for Rush to creep in to your list. Groove is obviously important to both of you and I feel like metal/rock hasn't been effectively represented as of late as far as requests are concerned. More Rush would be great.
Every time he paused the song to give a reaction I wanted to slap his hand! If I was in the room. "NOOOOO YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO THE WHOLE THING!!!" "OK... start over." LOL
Regarding the intro, that strange beat is Y Y Z done in morse code, YYZ being the airport code for Toronto, Canada. Also, if you think YYZ is nuts, check out La Villa Strangiato!
ByloBand Yeah when you learn the back story it makes the song that much better. Started as ged and Neil jamming and Alex comes in and is like hey, I think I'll do this amazing fluid playstyle and we will call it YYZed.
Yes, but there is a lot of fake reaction videos out there that cue over dramatized emotions to selected popular videos on demand to be liked by viewers even more. They will watch or listen to the video to prep up a better "genuine" reaction.
Unfortunately, yes they are officially retired. Neil has said he is 100% done. I would love for it to be different, but you will not ever see Geddy, Alex and Neil live on stage on tour anymore.
The drummer and the bassist are neck and neck for the best musicians in all of rock music. People saying this isn’t metal are right, but Rush is an undeniable influence on metal.
Great stuff!...I had a similar reaction when I heard it first back in '81... i don't think I used the term "dope" to describe it but I'm pretty sure I was smokin dope at the time 😬😬
Dave Grohl's story when introducing Rush into the Hall of Fame about his first hearing 2112 was almost my experience exactly to being turned on to Rush. Older Cousin hands me the LP, cover wreaking of sticky from being used as a rolling tray, tells me to read the sleeve while I listen. I was hooked. That LP made me want to be a musician.
Was way overdue though. Some of the groups tat got in there after one album just shows the politics in the industry. If your not on a US label it's a hard fight to get in there period.
RUSH is probably the best prog-rock (definitely no metal here) band in existence. Geddy Lee is consistently rated in like the top 3 bassists on most music polls for YEARS. Neil Peart is thought to be one of the best rock drummers EVER. Even a lot of metal drummers can't do what he's done on RUSH albums (sadly he's pretty much retired from music at this point, but well-deserved.) Also: YYZ is the code for an airport up in Canada, and the intro to the song is Y-Y-Z in morse code :) Alex Lifeson is an awesome guitarist, and he fits so well in with what the other 2 guys do, it just clicks pretty much all the time (they're one of the few trio bands out there.) More RUSH for you: Pretty much anything else off Moving Pictures, but I particularly like Limelight and Red Barchetta in addition to YYZ and Tom Sawyer. Roll the Bones album: Roll The Bones, Dreamline, Neurotica Test For Echo album: *Driven* (amazing bassline), Test For Echo, Totem And some classic RUSH tunes: Working Man, Subdivisions, The Spirit of Radio, Fly By Night Geddy Lee solo: Check out his title track from My Favorite Headache
Bryan Sproles they have some harder stuff. The start of yyz could be a dream theater song. They have influenced so many mode rn prof bands. I hear a lot of rush in symphony x too.
You know you're a great band when you never hear people say they sound like you. I would put bands like The Who and Aerosmith in that group with Rush too.
This may be my favorite video from you guys! Love Rush, love YYZ, love you guys loving them! Funny and entertaining as hell. Sad to hear about Achilles Last Stand being blocked. I was one of the first to recommend it because of how proto-metal it is. Short history lesson: First real prog album was King Crimson's In the Court of the Crimson King from 1969. Prog evolved out of 60s Psychedelic Rock that The Beatles innovated. The major 70s prog bands all had a different fusion of prog's spirit of instrumental/compositional complexity with rock and other genres (song recs in parentheses): King Crimson = jazz and modern classical (21st Century Schizoid Man) Yes = symphonic pop (Roundabout) Genesis = art-pop and English folk (Dancing With the Moonlit Knight) Jethro Tull = blues and folk (Locomotive Breath) Rush = hard rock (The Spirit of Radio) Pink Floyd = psychedelic, spacey-art rock (Time)
Rick you may enjoy this essay I wrote: mavearworx.weebly.com/blog/witnessing-the-birth-of-progressive-metal-part-1-of-2 Take your time and have fun listening to all the bands ;).
Pedro Chinito there are many problems with the exact classification of prog (as Rick showed us in his list too) because of the wide range of genres the bands incorporated in their music. I would put the beginning between 1966 (Freak Out! by the Mothers of Invention with Zappa) and 1969 (the first album recognised and called prog from its release by King Crimson). And yes, Pink Floyd was around since the mid-60s but initially they were more of a psych rock, space rock band until Meddle. For me, I would not put Rush between the pioneers of prog because they clearly were influenced by the bands which came before them (mainly Yes).
Pedro Chinito Pink Floyd formed around '63 and their first album was released in '67. However, the first Floyd album with Syd Barrett was pretty firmly rooted in 60s Psychedelic rock and is generally considered one of the masterpieces of the genre. The space-rock "prog" Floyd emerged from a transition over the next several albums, and depending on how you want to draw the line between psychedelic and prog, you can say it either starts with Ummagumma in '69, Atom Heart Mother in '70, or Meddle in '71. For me it starts proper with Atom Heart Mother, which I think is sufficiently far enough away from psychedelic to be considered prog, even though it's still in an early/rough form. King Crimson actually had a similar though truncated history, since before King Crimson there was a band called Giles, Giles, & Fripp and their only album sounds very much like a more psychedelic version of King Crimson. When Peter Giles left they recruited new members and formed King Crimson. That said, Zoli Reedcourt is very much correct that it's impossible to precisely classify prog and its exact beginning, especially the distinction between psychedelic rock and prog. He mentions Zappa, which is another name I regretfully left out, and it's very true that Zappa was highly experimental from the beginning. Though I think Zappa always defied classification, but prog is one of the many genres you could throw him into.
Rush is one of those bands that, the musicianship is just absolutely top notch, but most people get divided on vocals. Geddy Lee has a pitch to his voice that takes getting used to. Some can get into it over time, others can't. Being entirely honest, I didn't like them when I first was introduced to their music because of the vocals. But I've since grown to be a huge fan. I'd be curious to see you do a video for one of their songs with vocals. Tom Sawyer or maybe Red Barchetta tend to make more mainstream play.
been a rush fan all my life, enjoyed watching you fellas listen for first time. im a subscriber now. ill keep watching. fortune and fame your way. thank you for the content.
George, cracking me up... Rush influenced Dream Theater and Opeth and those guys. But Rush was influenced by Yes. Amazing musicianship in that band. You need to check out some Yes..
Just to mess with them, since they just did an instrumental, why not flip it to the A Capella "Leave It." All instruments to no instruments. I guarantee you they've never done an A Capella reaction.
I was introduced to them with this song through Guitar Hero 2, back when I was... 12 I think? Say what you will about Guitar Hero, but they had a lot of greats on there :P
Kefka Palazzo yeah dude, gth introduced me to Rush, Primus, Dead Kennedys, really showed me good rock. As a fist child I didn't have a chill metal head big brother, was glad that I could be one.
I’m a 55 year old Black lady and my brothers and I have been listening to RUSH since, aaah 76ish. This reaction video kind of saddens me. I had no idea there were people in the world who hadn’t heard Rush. Anyway, welcome aboard to the RUSH ride.
I long for a world where we all unite through all genres of music.
Seriously,?? That is friggin really cool!! Are you one of these guys mom??? Just saying??
What's you number Marcella?
@@paulhabat4217 Wouldn't they know about rush if she were the mother of either of them?
I've been to parties where there were 'whites and blacks'. We would take turns spinning songs. 2 groups that always had EVERYONE moving was Steve Miller and Rush.
Watching random people discover something I’ve loved and cherished my whole life is quite entertaining.
Exactly!
Yes,I most definitely agree.. Amazing to see & hear their Comments
Our youth in music snd these dudes JUST FOUND IT. Hard for this old guy to relate. Good on you fellas.
I watch this video about every 3 months, because I LOVE seeing the guys when they realize exactly how extraordinarily awesome Rush truly is!
Joshua Chaffin Absolutely!!
"When do the lyrics come in?"
Rush fans- "heh."
Whenever Geddy F'ing wants to! He's waiting for Neal and Alex to be done.
Lol!
Check out the live video from either Brazil or Argentina. They actually do sing along to it.
Lyrics would foul things up on this.
Right....lol
Rush is what happens when a band is formed by people who are absolute masters at their instruments.
So is Led Zeppelin
Also tool or Megadeth or cream or The Who
As a 3 pc band that wont be matched. RIP Mr.Peart
Rare to find people who are so open to different genres of music and it comes naturally to you guys, doesn't seem forced. 👍
This is the prescribed reaction, white person. Good job.
Vinayak Sridhar ;
I never understand people who blindly hate music because it isn't a certain genre, I feel like people who have limited taste in music miss out on so much
Creates temporary account to voice racial resentments. Good job.
Haha yeah I didn't get that, I am anyway from India.
The opening rhythm is Morse Code for YYZ, which is the 3-letter code for their hometown airport in Toronto. The band were in a small aircraft landing there and heard the morse code over the comm system. That morse pattern inspired the song. Great videos guys, welcome to metal!!!!
Jeff Tatro they got the idea from that airport
That was the first thing that came into my mind! -.---.----.. YYZ
Jeff they said when they saw YYZ on their luggage they knew they were headed home so the took the morse code for YYZ and work that up
I never knew that, how cool!
Peart and Geddy Lee have both said "It's always a happy day when YYZ appears on our luggage tags."
The piece's introduction, played in a time signature of 10/8, repeatedly renders "Y-Y-Z" in Morse Code using various musical arrangements
Further fun fact. Canadian airport ID codes all start with a Y because when they were first implementing the codes, they forgot about Canada so had to go back and add them with a Y since all the other codes were taken.
Good info I was wondering what it meant thanks man
Paul Leach You guys know more about airport Morse code than anyone I've ever met.
Great Scott - Well, full disclosure...I copied/pasted this segment from Wikipedia. I already knew about it from what they said in documentaries, but went there to find the name of the airport. Since I couldn't put it any better myself, I just copied it lol. :)
Y-Y-ZED
Play YYZ in RIO to SEE what RUSH means to its fans. RIP Professor.
That is a great rendition and that crowd was amazing
Second that, YYZ in Rio is a must see
Yeah that’s the performance of this song you want. The crowd is shooting the awesome directly into Alex, Geddy and Neil.
Yeah, YYZ in Rio is so good it’s worth another reaction
I was There. I'm from Rio. Knowing their existence since 1979 ( when I was 12 y) and not believing one day they would come down here...But they came in the end of 2002 ( then with 36y) can you imagine what it was like, to be in front of these incredible musicians...So much emotion and love in the can for so many years and then our emotions exploded. What an incredible night.
Have you seen Freewill? We couldn't help but act like REAL FANATICS (that's where the word fans come from,
doesn't it?) worshiping our GODS during the solo which is almost a threesome solo part, like super excellent jazz musicians interacting like hell
They are the greatests
YYZ was recorded in 1981 and Beat it was recorded in 1982 so if anyone was influenced it was Michael
Craig Ratajczak I wasn't gonna say anything....but you are 110% spot on....
Funny if you read that Quincy Jones article that came out recently he even says that Micheal actually stole more than a few tunes.
Good ears dude.
Oh yea
Craig Ratajczak to
I want to say thank you. I have had one of the worst days i can remember and i saw a notification from youtube. Low and behold my favorite youtube artists are listening to a song from my favorite band. It may not mean much but you made a terrible day great. Thank you.
Also more Rush and iron maiden please.
Thank you.
Definitely more Iron Maiden! Fear of the Dark or 2 Minutes to Midnight!
Adam petrohilos same! Feel's weird when some (awesome actually) youtubers make life better, but it happens! Hope your shit lines up, but if it doesn't there's always music therapy or UA-cam therapy or the combo of both...lost in vegas😉😉😉
Same here.. day was terrible, this is helping. these guys are great.
MrStrange number of the beast!
Yes! Iron Maiden! Powerslave would be my suggestion - but any song by them would be awesome.
Ted Logan Facts 💯👌
UK - Live: Night After Night.
Ted Logan Maybe not top 10 just because how wide the spectrum of different styles of guitar is and how many players there are but he is amazing.
What about fall of troy, fcpremix doesn't sound like 3 people played it
I think the term "progressive rock" had been floating around on the fringes of mainstream, but I'd wager most average music consumers of the day hadn't heard that term floated until the mid late 70's which is when I first heard that term used.
BTW, that off timing at the beginning is Morse Code for YYZ, Toronto Pearson Airport
Exactly! They came up with the jam as they heard that rhythm while landing in TO.
Yeah they would hear that the most, meaning they were coming home.
They need to shorten 'Toronto Pearson Airport' to 'Pear.T. Airport'!
now this I didn't know
@@hockeyteeth specifically, Alex Lifeson, (he's a pilot)
RUSH....The greatest 3 piece in rock history.....these guys stayed together for 40 years....DAMN
and please watch this guys...hmmmm how about LA VILLA STRANGIATO LIVE IN CLEVELAND 2011...It's another instrumental but worth watching
BurningBeard totally dif style but ZZ Top is pretty damn good 3 piece band also
Guys, Rush is a 3 piece.
The weird beat at the beginning is morse code for YYZ, which is the airport code for their hometown Toronto Pearson airport.
Shadowhand what wha!
Shadowhand id'nt awesome? Who does that?
That’s Neil’s genius mind.
Geddy is a legend on bass, this song is basically 100% showing off
I still have trouble playing his 5 second bass solo in La Villa Strangiato
i feel like it is more of a challenge, rather than braggadocio...
Rush never shows off, they are just Rush!
Some people might hate me, but their best instrumental is "Leave That Thing Alone" from Counterparts
ALWAYS a pleasure to see your comments Sandy!
Lost In Vegas thanks so much! 😘
Alexander Sexton superb song that whole album rocks from A-Z
Sandy Lewis yes on a Perfect Circle!
Neil Peart (drums) and Geddy Lee (Bass) have been the Drum and Bass gods for a generation of musicians. Rush is easily one of the best bands to ever walk the planet.
BTW This album predated Beat It. lol
Lars O *Geddy Lee (Bass, keyboards)
And they get 0 love..,. An Indictment of the younger generation
Alex Lifeson is one of the most underrated guitarists of all time.
Truly unique and an inspiration to legions!
Yeah, that's totally and also very sadly true.
awesome to see the acceptance as well as the insightful observations. You can not deny the raw power of rush.
Boys, you've discovered Rush.
Welcome to the rest of your life.
Good shit :)
Best comment ever😂
Great song choice for an introduction to Rush. Let the obsession begin! Great work guys.
Rush isn't that great compared to Genesis or King Crimson...js
@@SharingSoundz I play Guitar and have played all of them and Rush is by far the most difficult to play by far.
By far the best music reaction/review channel on the internet.
Hands down.
Yes, and I think even the other reaction channels would agree.
Yep
Laren Grey i agree fam
Well said
Thank you for loving what an era of us Rush fans have loved forever. Your expressions, laughter, and headbangs, made my heart swell. Love you both. ♥
SUBSCRIBED!
I freakin love this video so much!!! It also made my heart swell and i am proud to be a female Rush fan too!
Let's hear it for the girls!! ♥♥♥
Absolutely noticed your membership in the fairer sex club. Indeed, over 40+ years ladies at Rush shows have been kinda rare, especially back in the kimono-days. :P But you've been out there! Matter of fact I dated a girl for 2 years [we parted amicably] that I first met at a MSG Rush back in the day :D
One thing to the guys here: Michael's 'Beat It' was released in 1982. 'YYZ' was released in 1981.
cheers and power to the ladies!
"That Canadian guy, Geddy Lee, is the funkiest white man I ever heard." ~ George Clinton
Damn, George Clinton, the same guy from Parliament/Funkadelic, really said that?
@@dr.juerdotitsgo5119 That's the way the interview read. 😁🤘
The song is called YYZ because Rush is from Toronto Canada, and the beat at the beginning of the song is based on the morse code beeps of the letters YYZ, which is the airport code for the Toronto airport.

You win, sir. You are correct. Drummer and military nerd as a kid here.
First heard RUSH from my cousins after Permanent Waves had come out. Totally became a hard core fan when Moving Pictures came out, and until reading this comment had never known about YYZ being Toronto Airport and the mores code at the beginning. Always learn something new...
You guys immediately understood why RUSH fans are RUSH fans. Excellent work, gentlemen.
this. Ironically they found the only RUSH song you could maybe dance to (that's a hypothetical btw).
I wish I could discover them all over again :/
You could probably dance to Closer to the Heart, or Tom Sawyer.
Oh, there are probably a few more beyond those... I meant it tongue in cheek just because RUSH is so technical. Plus I have zero credibility on this topic because, well, I don't dance. period.
+Chicken Tendie, funny, the guys from Rush said that exact same thing about Tom Sawyer. And then Alex says "but you'd break your hip" lol
lol!
You guy's are saying Michael Jackson's thriller was an influence. Rush's "Moving Pictures" was released in early 1981. Michael Jackson's "Thriller" wasn't released until a year and a half later.
Vern Bander they just say it sounds a little similar to it
"Everybody's getting crazy!"
Rush fans: "It's three dudes!" ^_^
Listening to these guys talking about the music, made me wonder if they realized or knew it is only 3 guys doing all of this.
@@roberttimstarliper1671 They usually say "everybody" when referring to all members of the band
Even seeing them live it sounds like there's like 3 more dudes playing backstage, so awesome!
Hell yeah! Neil Peart is one of the best drummers ever!
Josh Grooves I would call him the most influential and creative. He's nore than just a drummer. He's a pure musician. He's definitely one of my favorites but he's not considered top 10 in drum circles as far as technical skill and grove go.
So what? What he is able to do and come up with on the drums is unparalleled.
Whovian1029 I know. That's kind of what I meant by the most influential and creative.
andruha1067 Yeah, I wasn't disagreeing with that part. I just think he's very technically skilled as well.
Correction: Neil Peart is the greatest drummer ever!!!!!!!!
Nice, just learned a couple of things. Been a Rush fan for 30+ years
Knew most of this except the morse-code part. Hope they change their mind about retirement... let us hope they come to their senses and at least give us fewer and BIGGER events.. sign me UP!
Richard Hamilton Thank you Rich, that's some terrific info.💙💙💙💙🎵
5) pinch harmonics....used all the time now, not so much then. Great info though, also a long time Rush fan. The Trees one of my faves, but can listen to YYZ anytime!
Wow, i always thought it was just some type of china cymbal.. good info
Exactly my view, too.
I will accept your astutasion...but are you sure?? Anyway Go Rush...
They are black folk and gazing carefully at the music...I would not be too quick to judge....
racist af....
I love how much they "get it" too
Don't forget...

And the great thing about Rush is they hung it up when their time came, they stayed true to friendship and musical integrity. They didn't drag it out through endless nostalgia tours, screwing over bandmates over money, exploiting fans, and carrying on without essential band members. They went out on top with dignity.
Well said my friend.
And of course, Clockwork Angels was a masterpiece.
Sad face
“I feel cool as hell listening to this.” I’m not even sure any Rush fan ever has said that if we’re going to be completely honest here.
No, we know we're not cool. We have embraced it, and Rush has repeatedly spoken to our experience. ie "Subdivisions".
Be cool or be cast out. Turns out we are cool!
Anyone who discovers Rush for the first time wins. I wish I could hear them for the first time again.
Aint that the truth!
Pincher Voice
I will never forget seeing them play. Saw them at the Richfield colosseum in Ritchfield, Ohio back in 1981. We were treated to not only moving pictures but got close to a decade of their music. It was awesome!.
Robert Gagnon ...Hey baby, it's a quarter to eight....I feel I'm in the mood!......to jam!
John Dearing love the old washing machines on stage...like jamming in buddies basement!
Robert Gagnon YES!!!!!
Seriously best reaction page on UA-cam. You guys are so open and understanding. Thank you for helping rock stay alive. You guys rule !
John Sippel these guys rocking out to the synth break might be my favourite thing ever
Finally, RUSH YYZ (YYzed)
Gentleman thank you for finally getting to Rush, the greatest band ever (In my opinion).
Cheers
Karl Sloman
Drummer
Karl Sloman imagine if they hear Bytor and The Snow Dog. Almist every traxk from Exit Stage Left. Cheers sir
Thanks for all the memories, Neil. You are missed.
"The drummer and the bass!"
Welcome to Rush, gentlemen.
Yeahhh
Been subbed for a minute now, not sure if I've ever commented before, but love the diversity of the shit you guys listen to, as well as the in depth analysis of why you do or don't like songs and what you can appreciate from each. I'm primarily a hip hop fan, with the same appreciation for lyricism as you guys, so I really enjoy your opinions on all types of music. Rush is a group I'm already familiar with, but your reactions to a lot of things put me up on game with some things I would have never known about otherwise. Much respect. YYZ came out before Beat It...just saying
Yeah, I looked it up soon as he said 'Michael Jackson'...YYZ was a year before.
Actually..they were performing it live after Farewell to Kings as a warm-up song..so 1978.4 years before or more
Don Price at 3:47 “I’m sure there was some influence there.” Which based on their conversation implies that MJ’s Beat It influenced Rush’s YYZ which as we have learned in this comment thread that is simply not the case. Both great artists in their own right just wanted to convey the thoughts that I and others had at the reaction to the baseline.
@@jacjr6193 I just smile to myself, thinking that Rush may well have been an influence on MJ's Beat It. :)
I cracked up with they made that comparison!
"It doesn't have lyrics." LMAO! Great review guys, enjoyed watching as well... BTW, if you want to see people dance to this tune, check out the concert footage shot in Rio de Janeiro, "YYZ - Rush in Rio"

Dave Powers This!
Rush in Rio is incredible. The crowd is on fire for YYZ
YYZ is the airport code for the city of Toronto. It is an ode to going home from touring. One could say that the original prog. rock bands were YES and Genesis. Alex Lifeson and Getty Lee are huge fans of YES and their playing is definitely a reflection of that.
Dan Gulley don't forget King Crimson!
King Crimson is the pioneer of PROG for sure. Rush just took what Yes and they started, and took it to a refreshing direction.
That I did not know. I was never really into King Crimson, due to ignorance.
"That sounds like a finale" Rush fans, "they're just warming up."
This band is only 3 members. The bass player is playing the bass and keys at the same time. Also the opening groove is Morse Code for “YYZ”
Also, watch the live video of this. It’s got an extended drum solo stuck in the middle of it.
I love when y'all get swept away in the music and your stank faces just pop up! Thanks for featuring Rush! #shoutouttofreethinkers
YYZ is great but if you two REALLY want to be impressed, check out LaVilla Strangiato by RUSH. MIND BLOWING!!

You guys just get it. I was waiting for Rush to creep in to your list. Groove is obviously important to both of you and I feel like metal/rock hasn't been effectively represented as of late as far as requests are concerned. More Rush would be great.
"This is culture-bending." There cannot be a more accurate description of Rush's music.
I never enjoyed this song so much! It's like watching a movie you love with someone whose never seen it.
Awesome!
Exactly !
Well said.
Every time he paused the song to give a reaction I wanted to slap his hand!
If I was in the room.
"NOOOOO YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO THE WHOLE THING!!!"
"OK... start over."
LOL
Regarding the intro, that strange beat is Y Y Z done in morse code, YYZ being the airport code for Toronto, Canada.
Also, if you think YYZ is nuts, check out La Villa Strangiato!
ByloBand Yeah when you learn the back story it makes the song that much better. Started as ged and Neil jamming and Alex comes in and is like hey, I think I'll do this amazing fluid playstyle and we will call it YYZed.
"What the hell was that?"
That was Neil Peart!
And his 19" Sabian Paragon china cymbal .
Greatest drummer on the planet...not breaking glass Chinese gong
slapping a piece of plywood on a chair in LeStudio
Neil Fu&king Peart!
It’s a whip
RUSH is in a class of their own....truly creative, funky, progressive. and there's only 3 of them! its insane.
“When are we gonna get to the lyrics?” Hahahahahahaha
"Oh... I guess this IS an instrumental..." LOL I thought they were joking the first time.
I fucking died and accidentally clicked off the video when they asked when the lyrics kicked in.
LilPhilly Yeah, that's when I knew they really hadn't heard it before!
you Do realise this is their first time hearing this, correct?
super funny!!!!!!!! Such cultural differences at work here.
Yes, but there is a lot of fake reaction videos out there that cue over dramatized emotions to selected popular videos on demand to be liked by viewers even more. They will watch or listen to the video to prep up a better "genuine" reaction.
Almost Everyone said NO Instrumental Reviews, WRONG, You two crushed it! Perfect time for #ORION Metallica. 👍
The Call of Cthulu would work, too
or Suicide & Redemption
Call of Cthulu. Which has, basically, a nine minute bass solo.....
Yes!!!! Orion is one of the greatest instrumentals of all time!!! Please guys, do Orion!
excellent recommendation!
You guys....Neil Peart died. There needs to be tribute.
chris moore 💯 agree. RIP Neil
My main inspiration for playing drums since 1980, RIP MASTER!
Jamelle_AKA_Jamal had one up fast. Are the Vegas guys Lost?
@@Finatic13 they are doing a poll now on what they should do via patreon☺
in the mid to late 80's, I got into Rush through Much Music. Yes it was the keyboard era of Rush, and I still loved them. RIP Neil.
What will blow your mind is that RUSH is a 3 piece band.
And Neil has the biggest drum set ever!!!
It's a shame that they retired from touring. I would have loved to see them life.
Rocka Rolla, Terry Bozzio says otherwise.
They sounded the same live as in studio.. simply amazing
Unfortunately, yes they are officially retired. Neil has said he is 100% done. I would love for it to be different, but you will not ever see Geddy, Alex and Neil live on stage on tour anymore.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays guys . Thanks for an entertaining 2017 and turning me into new music. Can't wait for 2018 and more reactions.
Same to you sir! Thank you for supporting!
Look for Rush in Rio- this song freaking kills it! You won't see many crowds moving like that to any band.
They also sing along...to an instrumental!
I am getting so much joy watching how much joy you guys are getting from something that brings me so much joy!
The drummer and the bassist are neck and neck for the best musicians in all of rock music. People saying this isn’t metal are right, but Rush is an undeniable influence on metal.
Great stuff!...I had a similar reaction when I heard it first back in '81... i don't think I used the term "dope" to describe it but I'm pretty sure I was smokin dope at the time 😬😬
LOL!!!
“When are we going to get to the lyrics, though?” 😂😂😂😂😂😂
R.I.P. Neil Peart
All this wonderful YYZ jamming and it's all done by 3 guys! Simply amazing!
Eric Goodrich More is More!
They did it even better live.
There's a reason Rush is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Finally!
Took long enough
Was way overdue though. Some of the groups tat got in there after one album just shows the politics in the industry. If your not on a US label it's a hard fight to get in there period.
Agrx Drowflow yeah way overdue.
even as a kid ...I understood their intelligence.
I like these videos before watching them, best channel out there
"Keeping a groove while going in and doing different progressions." Yep, that's the magic of RUSH. :)
RUSH is probably the best prog-rock (definitely no metal here) band in existence. Geddy Lee is consistently rated in like the top 3 bassists on most music polls for YEARS. Neil Peart is thought to be one of the best rock drummers EVER. Even a lot of metal drummers can't do what he's done on RUSH albums (sadly he's pretty much retired from music at this point, but well-deserved.)
Also: YYZ is the code for an airport up in Canada, and the intro to the song is Y-Y-Z in morse code :)
Alex Lifeson is an awesome guitarist, and he fits so well in with what the other 2 guys do, it just clicks pretty much all the time (they're one of the few trio bands out there.)
More RUSH for you: Pretty much anything else off Moving Pictures, but I particularly like Limelight and Red Barchetta in addition to YYZ and Tom Sawyer.
Roll the Bones album: Roll The Bones, Dreamline, Neurotica
Test For Echo album: *Driven* (amazing bassline), Test For Echo, Totem
And some classic RUSH tunes: Working Man, Subdivisions, The Spirit of Radio, Fly By Night
Geddy Lee solo: Check out his title track from My Favorite Headache
Bryan Sproles they have some harder stuff. The start of yyz could be a dream theater song. They have influenced so many mode rn prof bands. I hear a lot of rush in symphony x too.
Bryan Sproles Toronto...airport code YYZ
Symphony X definitely had some Rush inspiration, for sure.
Neil Peart is one of the best drummers out there. Hes a monster.
Also, please react to “Flying Whales” by Gojira!
Wish these two morons would stay out of metal/rock!!
Rest In Peace Neil, you will always be remembered!🙏
Not gonna lie I got a huge smile on my face when you said "this doesn't sound like anything we've heard" That's Rush for ya.
Rowdyrecords55 Yep and when they started the head banging I got kinda emotional.
The major 70s prog bands all had a different fusion of prog's spirit of instrumental/compositional complexity with rock and other genres (song recs in parentheses):
King Crimson = jazz and modern classical (21st Century Schizoid Man)
Yes = symphonic pop (Roundabout)
Genesis = art-pop and English folk (Dancing With the Moonlit Knight)
Jethro Tull = blues and folk (Locomotive Breath)
Rush = hard rock (The Spirit of Radio)
Pink Floyd = psychedelic, spacey-art rock (Time)
Rick you may enjoy this essay I wrote: mavearworx.weebly.com/blog/witnessing-the-birth-of-progressive-metal-part-1-of-2
Take your time and have fun listening to all the bands ;).
@mvunit3 Wow! That looks like an impressively in-depth survey of prog-metal history! Just by scanning through it I note I shamefully left out ELP!
Rick Henderson i might be confused but i recall pink floyd being around before king crimsons album
YYZ preceded Beat it.
YES! beat it came out in 1982 and YYZ came out in 1981! maybe MJ was a rush fan?
It was the guitarist from Toto that wrote the riff for Beat It. The solo is Eddie Van Halen but Steve Lukather did the riff.
yjforlife lol "yes", get it
Both songs don't have any other resemblance that some kick/snare drum pattern. The rest of them (including the guitars) is very different.
George, cracking me up...
Rush influenced Dream Theater and Opeth and those guys. But Rush was influenced by Yes. Amazing musicianship in that band. You need to check out some Yes..
Duuude, I would love if they checked out Close to the Edge
Mitch P i'd like to see they reacting to Roundabout.
Or King Crimson. Even Kanye sampled King Crimson (21st century schizoid man)
Just to mess with them, since they just did an instrumental, why not flip it to the A Capella "Leave It." All instruments to no instruments. I guarantee you they've never done an A Capella reaction.
Ah to be able to hear Rush again for the first time
jason - With Rush, every time feels like the first time.
it sure is a feeling
the first time is magical
I was introduced to them with this song through Guitar Hero 2, back when I was... 12 I think? Say what you will about Guitar Hero, but they had a lot of greats on there :P
Kefka Palazzo yeah dude, gth introduced me to Rush, Primus, Dead Kennedys, really showed me good rock. As a fist child I didn't have a chill metal head big brother, was glad that I could be one.
so much fun watching you guys discover this!
Canadian legends! Three of the best musician in the world with their respective instruments. Thanks for this :)
