John "Bonzo" (He was also sometimes called " the Beast") Bonham was legendary. In later concerts Moby Dick could last a half hour of him improvising on the drums (one time, his drum solo lasted so long, Jimmy Page, the guitarist, had enough time to go to the hotel they were staying at and back). When he played with just his hands, his fingers would get cut by the rims. He'd occasionally use the biggest drum sticks on the market and called them his "trees". He never had real lessons, and he had his first kit at 15. This is what sounds incredible to me. There's kids starting at 5 and they'll never be as good.
Yeah, absolutely. Also worth noting that they once let him loose with a double pedal, then took it away from him. That is the thing about truly great musicianship; it is rarely the case that more of a good thing is better, and the great musicians know it. Just look at the drum kit of Buddy Rich if you have any doubts.
@@davidcolin6519 They took the double bass away because they couldn't keep up with him. Just think about that for a moment - two musicians as talented as Page and Jones couldn't keep up with him.
Zep didn't put out singles, most radio stations wouldn't play them because their songs were too long but they sold 300 million albums beating the beating the Beatles by 125 million albums (these figures don"t include singles). Zep never had a #1 hit because Billboard's top 10 is based on singles.
Their record company did put out singles, just not in the UK. Also, I love Zeppelin but they are 5th or 6th in album sales. The Beatles are way out in front. The figure you've quoted is for Zeppelin's total sales, albums AND singles. Even if the figure of 300m were correct, and it isn't, the Beatles would still be ahead of them. :)
Little bit late to this conversation. But I have to agree with Codex7777. A few Beatles numbers as of 2014. Worldwide album sales topped 600 million. In the US only 1.6 billion (with a B) singles sold and 177 million albums. Number of albums to reach number one in the United States 25. The number of songs in the top 100 is 21. The most by any band. Much is I love Led Zeppelin, and I do, it doesn’t even come close to the number of the Beatles have. And realize that was five years ago they sold more since then. I know so has Led Zeppelin.
I LOVED watching your reaction. Someone said earlier in a post that you have opened pandoras box and I agree. The best band of all time IMHO ❤. Dig in and enjoy
I’ve seen videos where he was so excited playing that he jumped up off his stool. His love for drumming is written all over him. The greatest thing about him, to me, is the way he and Jimmy fed off of each other. It was truly a symbiotic relationship. Jimmy would go somewhere and somehow John was right there with him.
you gotta watch these high! and with some head phones. the recording and mixing techniques of the 60s and 70s were incredible. the music feels alive and dances around your head as you listen! love these reaction vids. it’s cool to hear opinions from someone outside of the rock community!
Hey, I was the biggest Zep fan in 1985, i kind of wore myself out on them all day all night Zep.It was so cool for you to do this for us. . . .shake the dust off and see with new eyes.
He playing by heart not sight. He feels it! Best ever. His son has those great genes and played better than most! His son played for Led Zep for their 2010 show! Amazing!
The world stood still in 1969, when that came out. Doing those triplets on one kick drum, crazy shit. A lot of drummers threw down their sticks. A lot more picked them up.
Man, have you seen the little Japanese girl, Yoyoka, play "Good times, Bad times"? She says John is her favorite drummer, she kills it, smiling the whole time. When I was her age I was still crushing my rolls and diddles, she's smooth as silk. If you ain't saw her give a look, it's refreshing.
I saw them once, and people did shut up when Bonham got going. It was all just incredible. But Bonham... wow. It was over 40 years ago, and I'm still blown away by that whole show.
52 y/o white hippie dude here. you reaction fills my heart with joy! and you just gained a subscriber. now I will watch your first reaction vid on the mighty Zep.
“I can’t believe I’ve been asleep this long”. Dude, you’re reaction was priceless! So glad to see someone appreciate bonzo- the hammer of the gods, the thunderfuck locomotive, after seeing him for the first time. And FYI. He got paid well-the same as the other three band members because they had the best manager in the business.
The "fifth member of Led Zeppelin", Peter Grant was legendary. His work rate was second to none and, while Led Zep were active, he worked exclusively for them. His reputation was phenomenal and he was known to go round markets looking for L-Z bootlegs just for the fun of it on his days off. If he couldn't find a policeman to confiscate the bootlegs he'd do it himself, and if the seller was foolish enough to try to stop him, he'd just as likely end in hospital. Also; on their early tours, Grantie would go ahead of the band to the next town and scout t out what the population liked best from their albums, report back to them, work the venue and spend the next day repeating the process. He also got them some of the best contracts in recording history. He also reportedly got an even share. That last fact demonstrates how much the band valued his influence.
I remember a Robert Plant (their singer)'s interview where he said that the band took breaks during Bonzo's solos, and a guy from the crew would knock at their door saying "sticks, guys", meaning that Bonzo resumed his sticks, so is was time to go back to the scene
AyeJay, watching your first-time reactions to Led Zeppelin put a smile on my face through both videos! Yes, John “Bonzo” Bonham is arguably the GOAT. I certainly believe it! Still, John wasn’t the only immensely talented member of the band. Guitarist Jimmy Page can also claim legendary status as well as Robert Plant’s phenomenal vocal range. In the unlikely event nobody has suggested this already, check out these songs: “Immigrant Song” and “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” as two of many examples of Robert’s vocals. “When the Levee Breaks” is actually a cover by Led Zeppelin of a long-ago blues musician. It will show you some of their many influences. And last but certainly not least, listen to “Fool in the Rain” to appreciate how well the band worked together, even when John and Jimmy play to different time! AyeJay, I give you lots of respect for being open to the work of Led Zeppelin. Please let me know if read this! -Scott
I stood in line for 8 hours in 77 to get tickets. No "back up" band and they played for over 3 hours. In the middle of the show, they did an acoustic only set. Never seen anything like it before or since.
Your next 2 Zeppelin videos should definitely be 1. When The Levee Breaks and 2. Fool In The Rain. As crazy as he got live, his biggest strength was locking down a groove that fits the flavor of the song and he holds it steady.
@@davidpeters44 The biggest thing that made Zep what it was was the production. Jimmy was a master. After that the band still would not have worked without any of its parts, and everyone in Zep was a BIG part.
The thing about Bonzo is he knew how to build and release tension. He's only drummer I can listen to when they do an unaccompanied solo. It's not about speed... it's drama.
"Wow, I can't believe I was asleep for this long!" Haha! I felt the same way. He woke me up too. Now 25 years later my ears ring incessantly, but it's worth it. It was great to watch you be intrigued by Dazed and Confused and then go full "Bonzo" on Moby Dick. Cheers!
No, that would be Keith Moon. Bonzo was an animal on tour because he hated touring and wanted to be home with his family, hence he drank to destruction, eventually his own. A very sad tale, but what a legacy he left, and his son, Jason, isn't too shoddy either. BTW, what really made Bonzo's drumming so special was the swing, not the pace or power. If you get the chance to ask any of the other members of the band, they'll tell you the same.
Really cool video Aj! Exposing each other to music we didn't even know we'd love, is where it's at! You're doing such a dope concept in showing that in our blood, we musicians are much more alike than different. Subscribed!
Love Bonham! He is my number one. Appreciate u giving these classic bands a chance. If u like drummers, u should see Santana “Soul Sacrifice” live from woodstock 1969. The drummer is barely 20, and kills it. U need to see the full version to see the full drum solo. Love ur channel. Keep the Zep coming!
Big Zeppelin fan here. Just stumbled on to your videos and binged them all. Not only looking forward to more Zeppelin videos, but you should also check out Grand Funk Railroad. Another under rated drummer. They opened for Zeppelin in Detroit and Zeppelin's manager shut the power off and booted them out. The crowd was so wild, he was worried about being upstaged. To be fair, they were playing in there home town.
AJ, every so often, I post a meme on Facebook I saved that says, “ Every day, every hour there’s a kid discovering Led Zeppelin for the first time”. When I was in high school, I used to turn younger kids on to Zeppelin. Watching all these videos is much like my school years. It’s fun watching you.
@@johnnixon4085 John Nixon, definitely a great call on Terry Bozzio! Although more of a Jazz/Fusion drummer, we can't forget Billy Cobham. His work with the Mahavishnu Orchestra was actually an influence on Peart. Also criminally underrated is Phil Collins. His early Genesis work is so creative and laid the groundwork for progressive rock to come...not to mention his work with Brand X! Speaking of progressive drummers, Bill Bruford of Yes and King Crimson, along with his solo work is beyond reproach.
You know Bill n John were friends. John was Iommis best man at his wedding.wardy n Bonzo played drums together when they were only 16 yrs old. Zeppelin n Sabbath close piers.

I love Zep and Rush. It took me a long time to finally place my “Favorite” crown on Peart. But to be fair, both bands are different and both drummers are different.
Check out their polyrhythmic interplay. On one song, Bonham lays out triplets in a 4/4 (on the bass!) while Page is in a 3/4 and then they're both in an 8/12 and it's nuts how tight that works out. It was call and respond with these guys, lead, drums, bass, and vocal intermixed. I grew up on Led Zeppelin and swore my allegiance to them like, "forever." All four members are legends who were always happy to get out of the way and let each other shine. There is a reason that each of them make the 'best of' lists time and time again. Yet when they would pull back in together they had an instinctual awareness of each other it was unearthly. What you are missing here is the sheer volume of Bonzo's playing and the massive bass tones he had. I was only a little kid when Led Zeppelin seemingly arrived from nowhere and completely transformed my world, yet I'm probably even more excited today to hear their music than I was then. Bonzo was the driving force of the band and when he died, the other three understood that they couldn't be Led Zeppelin without him.
This is excellent and entertaining, we love your stuff!! The guy who introed him is lead singer, Robert Plant. Bonzo (band members called him that), sadly died in 1980, but he left us all a great gift - his son, Jason Bonham. Like his Dad, he is brilliant, do your self a favour and look him up.

He never had real lessons, and he had his first kit at 15. This is what sounds incredible to me. There's kids starting at 5 and they'll never be as good.
@@emmittonukafor7809 21
Three words: “single bass pedal”
Yeah, absolutely. Also worth noting that they once let him loose with a double pedal, then took it away from him. That is the thing about truly great musicianship; it is rarely the case that more of a good thing is better, and the great musicians know it. Just look at the drum kit of Buddy Rich if you have any doubts.
The 5-piece drum set is all you need. A gigantic drum set on stage looks awesome but the real motherfukers , only needed five piece.
@@davidcolin6519 They took the double bass away because they couldn't keep up with him. Just think about that for a moment - two musicians as talented as Page and Jones couldn't keep up with him.
DBF are you 💯 on that story? It’s a cool one! That’s why I want to make sure! So I can add it to my knowledge!
@@colinwilliamgraham I thought it was because it was too noisy.
Only band or musicians with 6 albums on the billboard charts at the same time....my favorite band ever all hail the mighty ZEP!
Zep didn't put out singles, most radio stations wouldn't play them because their songs were too long but they sold 300 million albums beating the beating the Beatles by 125 million albums (these figures don"t include singles). Zep never had a #1 hit because Billboard's top 10 is based on singles.
Aaron Johnson they also never won a Grammy until they got a lifetime achievement award
It's just so great that, over 40 years later, Bonham is still blowing minds.
Brother, Just listen to “FOOL IN THE RAIN” - you will get ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING a drummer can possibly perform in a song
good call, I think a lot of people don't even know how ridiculous the drums are on that track
Brilliant shuffle, probably the best ever!!!
Fool in the rain is complete genius from the GOAT !
Absolutely fool in the rain the endurance he had to maintain those different beats must've been insane Marathon 👍like
I saw him do this live in 1975. It’s something you never forget. Yes he is the greatest.
You were in London

Another drummer you would love is Ginger Baker of Cream. Try listening to Toad by Cream; it will blow your mind
YOU GOTTA HEAR FOOL IN THE RAIN BY LED ZEPPELIN. The drums are bangin in that song‼️‼️‼️
Yeah, the isolated track is awesome!
Yeah that's the Purdie Shuffle Bonzo style!!!!
Another variation of the Bernard Purdy shuffle. Toto's Jeff Porcaro does a great variation on the tune Roseanna
Gotta Trust the fans.
We've been spoiled for decades with this fantastic music...
Watching your Eyes says it all...
Hey, I was the biggest Zep fan in 1985, i kind of wore myself out on them all day all night Zep.It was so cool for you to do this for us. . . .shake the dust off and see with new eyes.
Yeah dude,Bonham was probably 1 of the best drummers of rock & roll of all time !
He just made it look so easy ?
He was awesome...loved Zep !
EFFORTLESS 😎
He playing by heart not sight. He feels it! Best ever. His son has those great genes and played better than most! His son played for Led Zep for their 2010 show! Amazing!
Honestly, some of the best Bonham drumming is in "Good Times Bad Times". The kick drum alone in that song deserves praise!
I subscribed to this channel because you gave Bonham so much love!
Haha--only 4 minutes in and you're off the wall? Just wait. Next listen to Led Zepplin's When the Levee Breaks. Please. YOu'll like it.
Yes! I agree with you as I posted that song on his first critique of the Zepp!! Also KASHMIR!!
Right lol I love watching new zep fans dive down the rabbit hole 😅 so heartwarming they finally made it
His son Jason is amazing
Dazed and Confused is a good sample of Bonzo as well
great suggestion!
Jim Henson made a muppet called Animal. Animal plays drums for Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem. Animal is John Bonham. Legend.
Animal is Keith Moon not Bonham
Animal is Bill Ward!
Animal is a representation of all the greats!!
Animal is Gene Krupa. Had a heart attack mid performance and played on.
Best drummer ever! Yes watch their live versions...none better!
THANK YOU!!!! you are showing the world what these older magicians were doing! They aren't appreciated by many younger folks...LOVE you channel
Vlrissolo thank you for the support
and i got to see him live 3 times !!!! from the side of the stage. OMG !!!!!!! never ever forget !!!!!!! keep on watchn young one !!!!
Bro I love your reaction....it's like someone finding out there IS a Santa Claus! hah
In the unlikely event nobody has suggested this already, check out these songs:
“Immigrant Song” and “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” as two of many examples of Robert’s vocals.
"Best drummer of All time of John Bonham" Your blown mind is understandable. The day he died the band was done. Without him there is no Led Zepplin
Bonham and Jones were the heart of Zeppelin.
@@davidpeters44 The biggest thing that made Zep what it was was the production. Jimmy was a master. After that the band still would not have worked without any of its parts, and everyone in Zep was a BIG part.
When the whole band just takes off for beers during the middle of a show and let's Bonzo just play
"beers"... ;-)
hmmm
..beers :)
Nose beers
I just love how at 4 minutes your mind is blown, and he's just warming up! 😁
Cheers!
And now you know...you have experienced the great BONZO! I was fortunate enough to see them in '75 AND '76...
I love AyeJay's reaction to John Bonham...the greatest drummer ever!!!
The man can play anything. Jazz, rock, whatever. He is and always will be the best drummer of all time. Bonzo is the God of drums!!
LMAO!! I left a comment yesterday on your "Dazed and Confused" reaction that you should see this and i found it today. Epic video! Glad you enjoy it
I agree with the recommendations for When the Levee Breaks and Kashmir, but also Fool In the Rain and Achilles Last Stand (Live).
We've known for 50 years how great Bonzo was!!!
"BONZO!
EAT!
DRUMS!
AHHH MARMARMARM...."
"No, Bonzo, BEAT Drums! BEAT Drums!"
John Bonham was definitely an inspiration for Animal on the Muppets
Yes Indeed he was.
Check out; Yoyoka - Good Times Bad Times. An 8 year old Japanese sweetheart/badass drummer. She’s the reincarnation of Bonzo!
🤣LOL
Lol he was so great the band stopped playing when he died...there was no replacing him...the GOAT!
Really cool video Aj! Exposing each other to music we didn't even know we'd love, is where it's at! You're doing such a dope concept in showing that in our blood, we musicians are much more alike than different. Subscribed!
Love the reaction. Bonzo has had that effect on us humans from day one. 🤘🏼
I'm glad you dug this drummer, your right he's a legend
Honorable mentions:
Ginger Baker
Mitch Mitchell
Keith Moon
Alex Van Halen
Stelio Kantos Do you only listen to classic rock best of albums?
Stelio Kantos Mitch is criminally underrated as far as ‘great’ rock drummers go. Even Jimi missed him when he didn’t have him.
Ginger Baker..... Great call
Neil Peart smokes them all, and Terry Bozzio belongs on any list. Check out "The Black Page" part 1 by Frank Zappa.
Zeppelin n Sabbath close piers.
watching someone fall in love with Led Zeppelin is amazing. Bonzo was the best there ever was, his son is great but no one can match Bonzo.
Amazing what a fifth of Jack and an eight ball call do!!! The best!
he played sober at shows, got wasted after. (doing coke is still considered being sober ;))
AyeJay be like 😳😳😳.
Hell ya brother!!! JB is indeed Smoove! 🤙🤙🤙
Is this man playing with his hands and wakanda drums omg love your reactions
The drums in "When the levee breaks" were played in a hallway in a three storey hall with a staircase. Amazing!
"distance equals depth" can't remember if which member said that about the mic placement on the drum kits
At the end you looked like the last song you reacted to... Dazed and Confused!
You’ve got yourself into something you ain’t never getting out of. Greatest rock band in the world
I subscribed. I simply stumbled upon your channel and really like your willingness to listen to new, and vintage music. These beats gave a foundation to current rap, hon.
"I don't need to see anything else, he could have stopped at five minutes... is he playing with his hands now?" lol :-)
As a drummer, this video is hilarious to watch.
He is the best!! Hands down!!!
You have to listen to Neil Peart from RUSH, my #2!!!!
For sure, especially the song "Tom Sawyer"!
lol i just got though telling hem that Neil is exclusive hands down the best drummer ever and rock & roll!🎸😈🎸
A great drummer, whom people somehow overlook, is Stewart Copeland.
I grew up on Led Zeppelin and swore my allegiance to them like, "forever." Watching your channel and hearing your reaction, this old guy is going to give Hip Hop a good listen and an open heart to your suggestions. Subscribed! Mutual respect among musicians crosses all genres. It's how we learn to love and keep it growing. Thanks for sharing and caring!
All four members are legends who were always happy to get out of the way and let each other shine.
Love it. You may also enjoy checking out Rush (Neil Peart) or go way back with Buddy Rich
Neil Peart is AMAZING
The holy trinity of drummers
Forget both of those clowns.
Neil Peart would have a easier time playing LZ songs than Bonham would playing Rush songs.
Nice! The look on your face!! DUDE! Priceless!!
Bonzo could do more with one bass drum than mist drummers can do with a double bass kit.
AND, his triplets are legendary 🥳
Speaking of sticks, listen to: four sticks
I really enjoyed watching your reaction. I am smiling ear to ear to see a new fan enjoying Bonzo.
At 15:30 Bonzo looks like he's straight up casting a spell with all that hand movement!
Seriously though, man, I like your react videos. You look genuinely surprised and happy at what your seeing and that makes us happy. Rock on, man.
