If you want to hear someone else who can effortlessly change between types of singing styles, I recommend the band Jinjer (pronounced just like ginger). Start with the song Pisces (like the zodiac sign with the fish). Let us know when your mind stops spinning, after that one.

I’m no expert on vocal fry but from my study i understand that vocal fry is a lower register auxiliary, basically the chords are not vibrating with enough frequency to sustain a clear tone. This (his upper 4th octave belts) sound more like hyper functional phonation, or really just plain vocal tiredness. If your chords are already tired or inflamed, and you are singing at this capacity it will cause strain, & that’s what it sounded like to me. Again, based on my studies, I would not consider that vocal fry.

Whether we're talking about fry, engaging the false chords to "growl", mixed-voice sub-harmonics, or whatever other techniques singers use to distort their voices, there are good ways and bad ways to do it...Draiman has been doing this for almost a quarter of a century and, in an interview about this song, noted that he still has the vocal abilities he had 20 years ago which certainly means he's doing it in a non-destructive way. Check out Devin Townsend, as well...the song "Kingdom" (the live performance for EMGtv) is a great example of this, as well...and he's a heck of a showman! I think you'll like it!

Where most metal artists have to take days to recover from a performance, because their fry sits heavy on their vocal folds, David takes almost no recovery time, because his is so far forward and properly placed. As others have stated, his vocal fry is a stylistic choice, not out of necessity.

David has been using his vocal growl for 20 years He performed this whilst recovering from illness probably flu and I can hear the effect on his lower register in this recording. Your reaction /review brilliant, you could try Rhythm of the rain by the Cascades from 1960s lovely tune and lead singer still made brilliant recent recording must have been around 70 years old but strong and amazing even late in his life. I know I share this..constantly. Originally by Simon & Garfunkel in 1964 it was a warning.. how technology was separating people..as a Dream by Paul...and as the future from there has shown true..Disturbed did a cover which brings so much emotion..anger to this warning..as we have gone beyond this warning. I love this song cover and have loved Disturbed since they came out back in '94..David is Classically trained and goes above his normal heavy metal to show the emotion. With the world we live in now..with Covid..this is ever more prevalent..as I have said every single time I have shared this..if this does not make you feel..does not give you goosebumps you are not human. Much love *edit* there is a live version of this song from Conan...with that there are two sections where 'autotune' is used during the live performance. DAVID WAS AGAINST THIS..but he was also very sick, had a fever and was not sure he could do the show. He is seated the whole time of the live version. One thing that was pointed out to me was that the distance between his mouth and the mike stayed pretty much the same throughout the song. That's probably why his voice still sounds great after about 24 years or so of singing metal music. 😆

He's doing what's called a false vocal fry. He's using his false vocal cords to create the fry while mantaining the tone with his real vocal cords. It's how he can hold the tone while also creating the fry. It's something that takes years of practice to learn to do correctly.
You want to dissect a unique voice that no one in the world has but this man, and no one in the world will ever have? You should listen to Layne Stayley of "Alice in Chains" live at the Moor. This is in Seattle. I would suggest Love Hate Love. They also did MTV unplugged back when MTV actually still played music. I recommend "Nutshell" from that show or "Would", "Angry Chair", anything from that show is timeless and amazing. Layne's voice is something you've never heard, it's haunting and beautiful! Please give him a listen you will not regret it I promise!
A lot of vocal coaches react wondering if his vocal frye will hurt his voice. If you listen to it closely and watch, notice that the frye is produced above his vocal chords and, at least to me, involves the nasal cavity. He's done heavy metal for twenty something years and has perfected it. David Draiman was trained as a Cantor. English is his first language, but he's from Brooklyn, which some would say isn't English. LOL
His rasp was deliberate... On top, do not forget that this night, he was sick as hell, and they even had to have him sing sitting as they fear that he might have passed on stage...
Oh you should really know his style, hes amazing. This song really shows off his range. Normally metal..lots of vocal fry and loud sound. He trained as a Cantor when younger. I love David. I've been to several of their concerts over the years..including a recent one , where they did this song. And it was even better. He had the flu during this Conan show...even so ..so amazing. The reason this performance is so striking is that it actually alters , to a slight degree, the chemical balance in the brain. It impacts the neurons and chemical release of endorphins which is what causes the physical impression so many feel during the musical presentation. It has a diminishing impact if you watch the video repeatedly but if you allow yourself to be distracted and then come back to watch it again you will experience the same reaction. Quite remarkable. Other artists have been able to draw forth the same thing from audiences but never with such repetition..
David wasn't actully pushing his voice even towards the end... he could even sing the lot in pure tone if he wanted too, but he has so much control that he can sprinkle in distortion on call and is one of the very few that can do it so perfectly in a vibrato. A trully amazing voice...
Good analysis. I did see a vocal coach reaction that said his pronunciation was intentional because "word" and "world" sound very similar when spoken, so when singing in English you need to be more aware in your vowels in certain instances. If you focus on the vowel over the consonant, word and world sound very different. I think why you thought he was ESL was because his choices are very precise and meticulous. If I talked to someone on the street in Spain and talked completely proper Spanish, they'd understand but wonder why I spoke so "proper". Only he's applying very subtle nuances of English into how it performs in music. Just my double abes.

I would suggest watching the version Disturbed did in their official video for this song vs. this live version, you really get to hear the fry there, this version is kind of sanitized, and apparently he was sick, the official video version will knock your socks off! I heard another coach talk about that he does a 'wet' vs 'dry' fry, which is why he hasn't damaged his voice. I would also encourage you to listen/watch the song "The Sickness", that is the music that he is really known for, heavy rock!
You should check out some Marc Martel. He is mostly known for doing Queen songs (and was the voice in the Bohemian Rhapsody Movie filling in when they did not have usable material). However, he has a lot of original work, mostly with his old band, Downhere and an EP and a full album. I would recommend his versions of I Will Always Love You , Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Love of My Life. Check out his channel.
He is American. From Chicago. You may be hearing effects of his training as a cantor. He was not over singing. He used a technique called “vocal fry or fray” where the raspiness comes from air passing through the glottal point, which makes a rasp or bubbling sound. He is putting no strain on his vocal chords. Other artists do vocal fry and shred the muscles to pieces. David does not do that. His is a mastery of control.

If you watch his face, it looks like he generates his vocal fry more in his nasal cavity and mouth rather than his larynx, which may be how he is able to go from that section with the heavy fry to the pure tone again, with apparent ease.

David and the entire band Disturbed is talented and I think you will hear their talent by listening to these songs and more.
Yes he's American. He's had about 6 surgeries on his throat due to having something wrong. Its changed his voice a little but his voice has been amazing anyways. The rasp seems fairly well trained, I'm not a singing coach or anything so I can say. But if you listen to one of their heavier songs like Prayer, Stricken or Inside The Fire, you'll probably get a better gauge on it.

It's a wet rasp compared to a dry rasp with can over time damage the focal cords. A wet rasp is farther forward in the throat.

DAVID WAS AGAINST THIS..but he was also very sick, had a fever and was not sure he could do the show. He is seated the whole time of the live version. This is testament to his abilities as he sounds absolutely amazing and the autotune is only used in two very small sections. This man's voice is of the God's

One thing that was pointed out to me was that the distance between his mouth and the mike stayed pretty much the same throughout the song. That's probably why his voice still sounds great after about 24 years or so of singing metal music. 😆

David Draimans vocal fry is known as a wet fry and is above the vocal cords. It's the dry fry, which is below the cords that hurts ones voice.
He had the flu when he did this, he is a trained cantor and is also classically trained

I saw an interview with David and in it he was talking about people accusing him of auto-tune. He said he was classically trained in the interview.

He's doing what's called a false vocal fry. He's using his false vocal cords to create the fry while mantaining the tone with his real vocal cords. It's how he can hold the tone while also creating the fry. It's something that takes years of practice to learn to do correctly.

You want to dissect a unique voice that no one in the world has but this man, and no one in the world will ever have? You should listen to Layne Stayley of "Alice in Chains" live at the Moor. This is in Seattle. I would suggest Love Hate Love. They also did MTV unplugged back when MTV actually still played music. I recommend "Nutshell" from that show or "Would", "Angry Chair", anything from that show is timeless and amazing. Layne's voice is something you've never heard, it's haunting and beautiful! Please give him a listen you will not regret it I promise!

A lot of vocal coaches react wondering if his vocal frye will hurt his voice. If you listen to it closely and watch, notice that the frye is produced above his vocal chords and, at least to me, involves the nasal cavity. He's done heavy metal for twenty something years and has perfected it. David Draiman was trained as a Cantor. English is his first language, but he's from Brooklyn, which some would say isn't English. LOL
His rasp was deliberate... On top, do not forget that this night, he was sick as hell, and they even had to have him sing sitting as they fear that he might have passed on stage...

Wow, you even had a beautiful speaking voice.
The reason this performance is so striking is that it actually alters , to a slight degree, the chemical balance in the brain. It impacts the neurons and chemical release of endorphins which is what causes the physical impression so many feel during the musical presentation. It has a diminishing impact if you watch the video repeatedly but if you allow yourself to be distracted and then come back to watch it again you will experience the same reaction. Quite remarkable. Other artists have been able to draw forth the same thing from audiences but never with such repetition..

David wasn't actully pushing his voice even towards the end... he could even sing the lot in pure tone if he wanted too, but he has so much control that he can sprinkle in distortion on call and is one of the very few that can do it so perfectly in a vibrato. A trully amazing voice...
Good analysis. I did see a vocal coach reaction that said his pronunciation was intentional because "word" and "world" sound very similar when spoken, so when singing in English you need to be more aware in your vowels in certain instances. If you focus on the vowel over the consonant, word and world sound very different. I think why you thought he was ESL was because his choices are very precise and meticulous. If I talked to someone on the street in Spain and talked completely proper Spanish, they'd understand but wonder why I spoke so "proper". Only he's applying very subtle nuances of English into how it performs in music. Just my double abes.

He's a metal singer and he meant to put that distortion in his voice. He is a Jewish American who was raised here in the US.
I would suggest watching the version Disturbed did in their official video for this song vs. this live version, you really get to hear the fry there, this version is kind of sanitized, and apparently he was sick, the official video version will knock your socks off! I heard another coach talk about that he does a 'wet' vs 'dry' fry, which is why he hasn't damaged his voice. I would also encourage you to listen/watch the song "The Sickness", that is the music that he is really known for, heavy rock!
You should check out some Marc Martel. He is mostly known for doing Queen songs (and was the voice in the Bohemian Rhapsody Movie filling in when they did not have usable material). However, he has a lot of original work, mostly with his old band, Downhere and an EP and a full album.
I would recommend his versions of I Will Always Love You , Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Love of My Life. Check out his channel.

He is American. From Chicago. You may be hearing effects of his training as a cantor. He was not over singing. He used a technique called “vocal fry or fray” where the raspiness comes from air passing through the glottal point, which makes a rasp or bubbling sound. He is putting no strain on his vocal chords. Other artists do vocal fry and shred the muscles to pieces. David does not do that. His is a mastery of control.

If you watch his face, it looks like he generates his vocal fry more in his nasal cavity and mouth rather than his larynx, which may be how he is able to go from that section with the heavy fry to the pure tone again, with apparent ease.

Yes he's American. He's had about 6 surgeries on his throat due to having something wrong. Its changed his voice a little but his voice has been amazing anyways. The rasp seems fairly well trained, I'm not a singing coach or anything so I can say. But if you listen to one of their heavier songs like Prayer, Stricken or Inside The Fire, you'll probably get a better gauge on it.
