Now that you say it I realize that I get all the videos from Creator Insider recommended. And they always have a really high amount of dislikes. But UA-cam knows that I really dig this channel. Good point! Makes sense.

I get rec. vids about Hit--,ler if I mentioned his name without liking at all. And other ones I watched and did not like, keep showing up years afterwards. What the heck is that? And the ones i do like, don't return. By liking, I dont mean thumbings-up, but watching 100% and maybe multiple times.
And do you get why they push all of someones vids on me, only because I watched 1? Why do they presume that I want to watch the same again and again? I want other rec's, is there a way of getting that, please?
Do you know why it can be so hard to get the vids one wants, it can take years, or never? And free movies: Can one see them (some older ones) once, but no more?
@@Medietos The main reason why you see recommended videos this way is because there are many viewers with similar interests that you have and who actually did watch the videos that are recommended to you and liked them. Of course, your interests can be different in the end than the interests of those you get grouped with. The easiest way for you to get rid of those recommendations is to click the three dots next to such an unwanted video and click “Not interested”. This feature changes your recommendations very quickly. Make use of it!
In a nutshell it's just a form of engagement of the viewer with your video, it doesn't mean your video is trash, if anything it just boosts your video up in the search as UA-cam sees that you do have some form of engagement.
Indeed, dislikes should definitely not demotivate the creator. 😃✌️
If the video is about dislikes, people are probably going to click dislike just to see what happens

It would be great to have a statistic on reasons why people dislike, right? Well, that information doesn’t exist but trolling would be at the top of the reasons. At least nothing to worry about...

Hi I have a question, I see that one of my video started getting views from some external source (I do not know what source it is) but I see proportional grow of dislikes on this video. thanks! this is what i observed as well. one question is, does youtube take into account a user's history? there are haters who subscribe just to hit dislike on every single video as soon as possible. do you know if youtube algorithm takes that into account and give less weight to that dislike? thanks in advance
My pleasure buddy! Yes, user history is the bread and butter of the recommendation system. I can’t say how it behaves for your particular case but I bet it’s not fooled by this behavior to at least some degree. I any way, if those kinds of people don’t get too many there is nothing to worry about.
If I understood, it will only affect the Recommend feature for those subs that always hit the dislike. Your videos will be less and less recommended to them. Instead, UA-cam will try to keep those users entertained by another youtuber. For UA-cam, It's all about keeping us glued to our seats as their force feeds us continuous stream of videos after videos.

Some people use it differently lol. Then there's people who sub/unsub often, happens with a few users on my other channel
bro people dislike videos without even watching them. I can say something on twitter that someone doesnt like so they go to my channel and dislike for no reason.

They like to dislike vids oh and those dumb comments saying "0 dislikes noice! 👌 " and then when the trolls see the comment they dislike the vid
I have seen tests done that show the results. Thousands of dislikes meant that no one is recommended.
Indeed, there are extreme cases. But I bet short watch times played a big role in those tests as well. This is oftentimes the biggest factor.

One question, it seems like audience retention is a much more important factor in the weight of the recommendation algorithm. Most of my videos are around 15 minutes long, so they tend to be a little lengthy. Is UA-cam more concerned with the percentage of the video that they finished or the number of minutes total that they consumed in an individual video? For example, I have about a 32% retention rate in my newest video. So in a 15 minute video, people view about 5 minutes. Is this helping me or hurting me? Also, if someone starts a long video like mine, closes it out, and then comes back to it to finish it at another time, how does that affect my retention rate?
Indeed, watch time is much more important in general! However, you can’t really compare the two. Likes / dislikes are relevant for the recommendations for the particular viewer whereas watch time is relevant so that the algorithms recommends your video to new viewers who haven’t watched your video yet. In any way, what is really important is the average view duration. You have a few advantages when you also have a high average view percentage - e.g. most of your viewers get to see you end screen and may click a video that you recommend there - but what truly counts is the average view duration. Investing into your skills to get it as high as possible is definitely a good idea.
Negative dislikes to like killed a video of mine 3 times
Oh man, that must have ruined a few of your days. Having more dislikes than likes certainly makes the info spread through the recommendations for many other viewers. Can you remember how the algorithm behaved back then? Did you views suddenly flat out maybe?

that's actually good! Why would I want people to watch my stuff if all they are going to do is dislike them. I find dislikes are not worth paying attention to unless it's extreme but most of the time, dislike doesn't tell you anything. There's so many reason why someone would dislike your video it's not worth chasing after. Also it's good it stop recommending my videos to someone that keeps disliking. I wish youtube would let you know who dislikes so you can just block the repeaters from the channel. At that point, they just hatein' and it's just noise.
I totally agree! Although it’s quite frankly still a psychological challenge for me to look at dislikes it is really a good thing. Kind of like a mechanism that naturally keeps the ecosystem in balance. Well, I am pretty sure UA-cam won’t tell you the individual people who dislike. It’s not a mechanism like leaving a comment where the person explicitly opts in to get seen by name. So giving you names for dislikes would violate their privacy at least in some countries depending on the laws. However, good point about blocking people who dislike all the time. If that behavior gets to a point of bullying it would make sense for UA-cam to automatically block people when they detect that behavior.
Yeh. but at the end of the day, as long as it's not off the usually dislike to a video then I just don't pay much attention to it. And according to your video, as long as it affects the user then I'm all for it. lol As long as it's a legit dislike I'm all good with it. Would be great to get opinions on why but sometimes, it's as simple as the shirt you're wearing. It's just not enough to make me worry about a few dislikes on a video when the likes out weight them in the first place.

that is correct, we need to know who dislikes the video so that, the person would not just dislike when there jealous or what.
But by adding chapters as its becoming something recommended, isn’t it potentially hurting watch times? There are viewers that will right away move to specific chapters...?
Great question! You are right, it can reduce watch time. But on the other hand it can improve the experience of viewers and thus give them more reason to come back to watch your new videos. And that can be worth much more than the watch time that you lost. In terms of views that you get as well as from the perspective of the UA-cam algorithms.

Awesome Jeffrey! I’ll bet you’ll ace it in no time. But that’s true. For a small channel the competition is really fierce. Once your channel grew bigger the competition will not look so tough anymore and that will be reflected in your grades. For now, FFF is a common sight. So look for search terms that the big channels missed out on making them less competitive. I'm just starting out making videos for a month now, and I just got dislike bombed. I don't get hardly any likes/dislikes so I can see it all came from the same person. What I noticed is that after 5-6 dislikes on as many videos, it stopped. Also comments were made on the same videos, where I have none, and they got erased, but it still shows in my Studio analytics. What this assumes is that, IF YOU DISLIKE BOMB A CHANNEL, without watching it, UA-cam MAY STRIKE OR REMOVE YOUR ACCOUNT, seeing it as abuse.

I'm not worried at all; just want to know how this translates to my videos and I came across your video about this. Thanks again for clarifying this! I think getting dislikes is just a pretty expected scenario when a video is starting to blow up already.

This is interesting. Another UA-camr made a video recently that said that dislikes do help because it is engagement. I don't remember who it was, but wish I could show this to them. I once mistakenly clicked on a video about how the UA-cam algorithm doesn't work properly. After three dozen additional videos, I can confirm this is the case.

4:20 Todd says like/dislike factor but small one. In my regressions like to dislike are insignificant. Perhaps 47 uploads are too little power, but actually my most popular (recommended) videos have high dislike ratios. I think the pandering for likes and comments is not supported by my data.
I totally agree! As you said, Todd explicitly said that it’s a small factor and thus it’s no surprise that we can find counter examples. And also how he used the like/dislike ration in his talk beforehand, tells me that this is only a rough indication for him to get a first idea how a video is performing. You are right. Asking for likes is not really impacting our success. The most effective call to action would be to recommend another video for the viewers to watch next. There is a myth that has always been said that if you promote a channel, the recommendations of the channel will fall. Is this true? I promote some of my videos and think that can be true.
Excellent question! You are in luck: Todd answered exactly this question back at VidCon as well. It is not true. From the algorithm perspective they welcome you to use AdSense to promote your videos. And the paid views aren’t even excluded from triggering the algorithm. So go ahead! I believe that the myth is founded on the rather psychological effect that once you stop paying for views, the video falls back on its normal level of getting views. That “feels” like it got worse whereas in reality seeing all the paid views coming in made us being spoiled. ;)
I’ve also wondered about the thumbs so thank you for this video! I wondered because recently several channels have been cyber bullying me and included in their bullying is them giving me tons of thumbs down! However they run back to their channels and discuss what was in my videos so I know they have been watching the entire video! And my watch time is up! Also when I type in my own tags in the searches my videos are popping right up in the top of the line up! So I agree that the thumbs down do not seem to be effecting how much my videos are being recommended!🥰

No, it’s not. As a creator it’s of course discouraging to see but you can just ignore that.

I have been getting dislikes since I have got 88 subscribers I get at 20 dislikes on each video however I noticed that UA-cam have been removing the dislikes. Do people by bots to dislike your videos ?

I totally understand that. Well, you don’t have to fear UA-cam penalizing your channel for it unless you really made something wrong and the dislikes reflect that. From a personal emotional standpoint, just know, that’s the internet. Don’t take it too seriously.

Sadman: Did you go through the vids and see if it might be justified form some perspective? Do you have u usual ideas/opinions, which soem ppl can't deal with = can be disregarde? Have you asked them or interacted w them? When I get negative or attcking comments on comments, it often turns into good when i see a bit further than my own feelings and vulnerability. One turned out to just be in a bad mood, some misunderstood me, some didn't read properly, soem ...just don't think deeply. Some hate it when their humour at someone else's expense get spoilde by compassion for the object.
I have another small channel with 4K subscribes. At the start, after 10 videos someone put to each video 7 dislikes from Japan. I'm pretty sure it was one person with seven accounts (moron) lol. So I hid my all video's likes and dislikes. How can that effects my rankings? Thanks.

Great topic... Often wondered, I had a video that was a homerun for relevancy (and early on the topic) - it got a lot of downloads over several months and now is being significantly outranked by other videos with much less relevancy even though I have several thousand views on it.
My pleasure. :) Since your video did really well in the beginning and then got outranked bit by bit over time, most likely your click-through rate and/or watch time was not good enough to keep the rank it had. Keep working on those aspects and you’ll be able to ride the wave of search traffic longer and longer. 😃👍
I got my first ever dislikes(two of them) about a month ago, which almost destroyed me, it's an exaggeration but it certainly felt like that. It literally took me about a week to pick myself up and continue on.
I would consider myself inexperienced in UA-cam, I mean, my channel is just 4 months old and I know will be getting more and more of them as time goes on.
Now I don't feel as terrible as I was before I saw this video, I just wish I saw it sooner.

I am super glad you don’t feel bad anymore! Oh yea, my first dislikes were the same. You can get praise for your work all day and then one dislike or one bad comment destroys that enthusiasm. But is it okay to get 50 50 on likes and dislikes?
Well, at this point the big question is what these many dislikes mean. Did you upset your audience? If this is a genuine signal that you did something bad and your audience is trying to tell you that? If yes then it would be a good idea to learn from that and improve.
Thumbs down mostly affects the person who gave it a thumbs down…it tells YT to not suggest your video to them…but in the long run…a thumbs down is still interaction and ultimately (in the long run) helps your channel! In other words…bad publicity is still publicity!
Thank you so much. I released a video and it was doing ok, new channel, not much history etc, it got as many likes as dislikes and I was getting quite disheartened about it. Very reassuring.

I received my first 2 dislikes just today. The dislikes are not present yesterday, now I got unmotivated to continue my channel and just start a new one. I know that I shouldn't really worry about dislikes tho, but it's really discouraging just to see all the hours I put into making videos just get called crap. I still learnt something from you tho, and I know that I need to accept the fact that not everyone will like it :)

UA-cam system keeps automatically deleting any videos of mine that has more dislikes than likes!
That is weird! Do you still have the video links? If yes, if you open them, what explanation does their watch page show why the video is not available anymore?

I think they need to re-tool the video ratings method. Just having a generic thumbs up/down is wrought with all kinds of problems because it's not clear what your up or down is referring to. As some have already indicated below, the reasons for disliking a video are many. Sometimes I've given a thumbs down because I didn't like the guest on a program that I usually enjoy. It doesn't mean I don't want to watch that program anymore. Other times, I've given a thumbs down to a well-produced news video about a story or situation that really irked me because of the disguist I felt after watching it, but I in fact still consider it my favorite news channel. It seems like this could also be a problem for the alogorithm because it could misinterpret my rating. Does that make sense to anyone else?
Great thinking! Indeed, the dislike button simplifies feedback beyond usefulness. But don’t worry about your own dislikes making the algorithm think that you don’t want to watch a certain channel anymore. If you would constantly dislike the videos of a channel then that would have such an effect. But one dislike every now and then, well, that doesn’t have a big impact. The dislike button is really just a very weak factor. If you really wanted to get a certain channel out of your recommendations then you would need to use the dot dot dot menu on Home and select either “Not interested” or “Don’t recommend channel”. That actually changes your recommendations quickly. I hope this is a useful answer for your great question! Cheers, Nico
I wonder what happens when people disable the likes/dislikes on a video. I never worried about dislikes, guess it's still nothing to worry about. Good to know that disliking a video mostly affects my recommendations.
Mmh, good question! Since the explicit feedback mechanisms (likes/dislikes) don’t play a big role I guess those videos won’t be handled much differently. But I couldn’t say...
Btw, I just realized that you cannot really disable likes and dislikes. They are still there. Only their counts are not publicly visible. This means that UA-cam has still access to these numbers like it usually has. So the difference whether to show like / dislike counts is a psychological one from the perspective of the viewers. That may change behavior but I couldn’t say in which direction.
Ah alright. Good to know, then. I know controversial videos tend to hide their likes/dislikes but you're right that it might be a psychological thing.

Great questions! Many comments do indeed correlate with more successful videos. But it doesn’t mean that many comments cause the success. I assume it is rather that comment show that the audience is enjoying the video. And a great video that is enjoyed by viewers tends to be more successful.
I would say likes/dislikes on a video are very very very dependent on circumstances. A long while back when I only had 70 subscribers a larger youtuber with 30k+ subscribers told his fans to go dislike my videos which accumulated around 5000 dislikes across my videos at the time. Of those 1 has 2000+.
Well you may say it "killed" those videos but instead of them getting under 100 views 1 of those blew up to a few thousand views in a few days now it has nearly 10,000. In essence while he was trying to kill my channel he gave it a giant boost that ended up helping it in the long run. Anyways awesome video!
Wow, what a story! Indeed, such an influx of views and a bit of watch time probably as well sends signals to the algorithm and hence it may start to look for similar people to show your video to. I guess bullying can have its bright side. ;)) But still unfortunate that people do this...
@@Morningfame indeed end of the day I think that sort of thing only can impact larger creators negatively ( if the smaller creator can handle the negative comments etc ) in the sense of people unsubscribing... when done to a small channel it's like a shout out. Somewhat of an interesting debacle

There is no good or bad. The more traffic you get the better. One thing you could investigate though is if the views you get from Browse are from subscribers or non-subscribers. It might just be that the most views are from your subscribers. That’s a very good thing of course. But you may then think about new ways to get non-subscribers to your channel.
My videos get more dislikes than likes, so I had to hide the ratio. It kind of bothers me, and it demotivates me to do UA-cam.
Yea, that is demotivating for sure! Do you think it is because of a group of trolls? Or do you think your audience tries to tell you to improve your videos? In case it is the latter then you can turn it into a game for yourself to get less and less dislikes with each new video that you publish.
Morningfame For every video I post, I get more and more dislikes. One of my videos has 7 likes and 9 dislikes

@@Morningfame I think both, because there is the one guy that said he would spam dislike my videos, but then I did a UA-cam ad and he said he stopped disliking, so I think the other people just didn't like the content.
@@theplacer That’s a good sign! I’d say keep making better and better videos and eventually your will overcome the dislikers. Just see it as an unfortunate start which won’t matter anymore in a year from now. Fingers crossed!
Agree it's a very small factor. I mean, look at Rebecca Black's "Friday" music video back in like...8 or 10 years ago. It received a lot dislikes but garnered a lot of attention (views and comments). So I think it's both good and bad.. I noticed too, especially in reviews of a product or first impression of a product type of videos, that people hit the dislike button mainly because either they dislike the product or the the company. Same goes true if it's political talks or something--the dislike is being treated like an 'angry' button now it seems like Facebook. I like how the old 'star rating' of youtube back then, but it got abused too much especially for trolls. I wish youtube will someday remove the dislike button.
Indeed, a dislikes button by itself is a simple thing. But how humans use it / react to it is a bag full of reasons. Funny thing, UA-cam did that for the dislike button on comments. If you click it then no number is shown. Maybe those actually do nothing. ;)

Its just plain rude and immature. We all get our dislikes and likes and we all have fans and haters. Why cant we just ignore dislikes?

Yea, we humans are unfortunately wired the way to fixate on the negative. Some more some less. Indeed, we should just ignore the few regular dislikes we all get. Of course, if there are surprising many dislikes then that can be an important message to the creator. Not a constructive one of course. That’s why I always recommend to foster a lively conversation in our comments so that we have a chance to get constructive feedback even for things that we as creators need to improve.

I am sorry to hear that! You can’t stop someone from disliking your videos but you may hide their comments. Go to UA-cam Studio on your pc, select “Settings” at the bottom left, select “Community” in the popup and then add them in the “Hidden Users” section.

My friends friend who is really rude somehow found my channel and disliked most of my videos I'm pretty sure he's one of them people who just go through UA-cam videos disliking them no matter what it's about and because one of my videos only had one like and one dislike it made my channel look bad I I got pretty sad because it was my first disliked on any of my videos I only dislike videos that are rude or inappropriate anyway ignore the haters
